I’m a retired paramedic and I have seen addicts in all shapes, sizes colors, age groups, etc. etc. Addiction does not discriminate. He is very lucky that he could afford to go to all the treatment centers he went to. Some people aren’t so lucky. I read this book and it was fantastic. I wish him nothing but the best and it is my hope that we take addiction a lot more seriously in this country and have a better facilities for people to get well in.

I wish he'd get more political and help with the decriminalization of drugs as a first step. In my province our conservative government is building a new prison that everybody says we don't need, but as the homeless keep growing, thats the kind of housing he's thinking of.
Way too many people still unbelievably think addiction is a 'choice'.

Agreed. Hes very wealthy from one mildly funny TV show and has like most addicts taken a lifetime to start dealing with their addiction. I've loved and married addicts and have a son that's an addict too. I have a very jaded view on addiction sadly. I find them all similar and self loathing and at the same time selfish. As we all know they have to get better alone and start to grow up as they never mature until they get and stay sober. This guy does sound medicated but who knows? But by saying I didn't want this says a lot. He's still in victim mode and has much work to still. And BTW blaming colic for your addiction is ridiculous. I had 2 kids with it and one is an addiction. He needs to continue to grow up and become a really good human.

    • @mikearchibald744
      @mikearchibald744 2 года назад +1

@@londonwright173 Thats kind of unfair. What we know about addiction is that it affects the brain in very particular ways. Soem people can take drug a and it has no affect, others become addicts. Of couse its self - ish, when you get hit by a bus you go to the hospital. Your process of getting better is 'about you'. If you are implying addicts can never be selfless then I have a wealth of samples saying thats very wrong, in fact many addicts are fighting for legislation because of OTHER addicts.
Addiction is a disease, and there is no evidence that ONLY can they get better alone, in fact thats found to be very untrue. Most addicts, unlike most of hte public, already live in a social culture of other addicts and dealers. Nothing ANYBODY does do they do alone. Addiction is now described as a disease, same with alcoholism, and thats why they have AA, which isn't great, but its supportive. Like ANYTHING in life it ultimately rests on an individual, but they certainly don't have to 'do it alone', in fact there is no reason for them to do so.
I didn't listen to him talk, its the issue I'm interested in and criminalization is problem one. After that then like alcoholics we can try to deal with it in other ways. But his position is irrelevant, good luck to him, its addiction services and public policy that are the issue. As you say, INDIVIDUALLY its not like I can adopt an addict and 'turn them around', its just too much. It takes a social stance. And sadly we live in a celebrity world, so he does have a platform, and I say it because he's already DONE debates in europe on decriminalization.

In Canada we have free residential treatment centres. I’ve been 4 times. Treatment centres aren’t the solution. It gives you sometime to clear the fog but it’s recovery groups “AA, NA, CA” that saves lives. 3 years clean myself. I’ve seen countless people come in to these rooms while at treatment centres and then once the rehab stint is done, not come around anymore and then end up dead or back in prison or rehab again. AA is the only thing that works and has worked for almost 100 years. Mathew knows this well and addicts and alcoholics know this very well. It’s the ignorant public who for some reason think it’s a cult that deters sick people from walking through a door and asking for help. All AA is is 1 alcoholic helping another. There is no forced religion, no forced anything. I sat beside an atheist today, nobody cares. Once we can stop stigmatizing groups then we can really help people. But we can’t even stop stigmatizing the sick, let alone the solution. It’s obviously an anonymous program but as someone who attends meetings I can tell you that everything he is saying about addiction and the solution is coming from a place of AA. We speak a language and he is speaking it and I love it.

I guess we should now all know why he talked with such directness and gravity in his voice about his matter - he clearly knew he was near death. And the world's lost a voice that was badly needed to shine light on this vital issue. Not one human being, not one soul, has gained anything from this person's death. We've lost, we've all lost.

He's so ridiculously far from the first addict to describe EVERY word of this. My Mom (68), and younger brother (43) both died from addiction (alcohol as the primary for both). It's a cruel, awful, heartbreaking disease. It's deeply frustrating and profoundly painful for those who love an addict. I hope & pray this is not received in any way other than what I mean to convey:
An acquaintance of mine is an E.R. doctor who opened up an addiction recovery clinic a few yrs ago. (Still works in E.R. he's a very busy & generous, helpful servant of Christ Jesus). Anyway- after telling him how glad I am that I dont have an addictions, he laughed at me. Full- throated LAUGHED AT ME!! & he said, "EVERYONE..and I mean EVERYONE has ATLEAST 3 addictions".
My decision to test him on that backfired MASSIVELY. It was shocking how fast & far I surpassed #3.
Well atleast MY addictions arent mind- altering...
Is what I told myself AS I descended appx halfway down/ off my high-horse...AAND, simultaneously, gulped down more of my highly caffenated coffee- topped off with 1/4 cup of whatever my creamer has in it.
Smh. Im such a wretch!! Lord forgive me.
I learned that Given just one of MANY conditions & circumstances, my caffeine (& other several addictions) could have just as easily been alcohol, or ftnl, ...or whatever else.
(Or BEEEEE,...Im 57yo now- so Im FAR FAR more cautious & far less easily influenced, but Im not dead yet, & have definitely not bn in the shoes of many others in this fallen world. For the grace of God goes me.
May God continue to bless, guide, & comfort you. 😊.

As an early intervention therapist, an attachment and trauma specialist for more than 40 yrs, it is upsetting to hear what Matthew's parents were told to do. I heard laughter in the audience because they do not understand what he is saying. But it is SO IMPORTANT for the public to learn and hear the impact of a Dr's prescription of phenobarbital to a 30 day old infant, for 30 days. I think what he doesn't realize even to this day is that his infant self became accustomed to this substance: it is not genetic, it is not a "disease" as such, but a result of early exposure to a highly addictive substance, ie phenobarbital. This is an early adaptation for need of a substance, fed to this baby Matthew. This is not ok, it is tragic - and the effect on Matthew's life has been profound. But he is strong, intact and here to make a statement. Please read Gabor Mate's books, In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts, and his recent book The Myth of Normal to gain greater understanding of addictions. Thank you, Matthew Perry, for being brave and determined to share your personal history.

I can't believe you don't know how genetic alcoholism is. I mean the stuff his parents gave him may have exacerbated it. I do agree there. But for alcoholics with that gene, they all, every one, have that exact same 1st time experience with alcohol that people without the genes don't experience. Our body metabolizes alcohol differently than normal people from the get go. We experience the insane cravings from the 1st time because of that metabolizing. For many of us that had nothing as a child, we experience the exact same thing he experienced. My buddy drank 2 wine coolers, I drank 10 until it was all gone. That was my first time at 16 years old. But numbers have proven that the chance of being alcoholic is largely determined by the family history. For people like us, we are alcoholic long before we ever take the 1st drink. We don't drink ourselves into alcoholism.

This interview is one of the best I have ever watched in my entire life. The host asked the right questions and gave the guest the time to share the details that led to the main answer. Kuddos.
I love how Matthew Perry presented himself as a common, normal human being who had a "disease," made a mistake, didn't understand what he's doing, or what's happening, and correcting those mistakes, and on top of that, offering help who are having the same journey as him.
I watch F.R.I.E.N.D.S. whenever I'm depressed and anxious. I always adored/hated how Chandler Bing is using sarcasm and timely jokes as a defense mechanism and JANICE! And I never knew MATTHEW PERRY aside from being Chandler Bing.
Now, knowing a bit of your personal story, I'd remember you as the MATTHEW PERRY, also a human who has his own ghosts and struggles despite of, like you said, "achieving your dreams."
Rest in peace, and thank you for being a part of my life simply by sharing the lessons you've learned in this journey called life and FRIENDS.

I can perfectly relate to the 1st time. Me and a buddy got wine coolers. He drank 2 and was done, I drank the other 10. I knew I had found the one thing that made me feel a part of instead of separate from. It was the greatest feeling I had ever experienced and have ever experienced to this day. And I just knew that this was how other people got to feel all the time. Was convinced. But it turned on me. My best friend became my worst enemy. Could never put together more than a few years of sobriety for 30 years. After a few years of sobriety, my mind would convince me that after all that sobriety, it would be ok to experience that feeling one more time. Rinse and repeat. The one thing non alcoholics don't understand is it's not a tolerance issue. Once it turns on you, you can never again enjoy it no matter how many years you put between you and the bottle. And the older you get the more it takes to get drunk even after many years sober. What Matthew is doing now will keep him sober if he continues. Sharing the experience strength and hope of sobriety is the only way to keep it. I'm 49 now and 7 years sober.

You think about a beer until you get it and it feels so good that now you can live through the day. The feeling wears off so you need more until you get drunk enough. even to be able to sleep because you pass out. Its hard. picking up the book tomorrow. RIP my Friend

My dad gave me my first drink when i was 13 while i was going through my parents divorce. He didnt do it in malicious, it was your typical give a child a sip and they wont like it. But i liked it, it made me feel good, it taught me problems can be solved by getting drunk but as an adult i know this isnt true. I didnt want this or this problem. No such thing as a functioning alcoholic… i hate to say it but it’s true… alcoholism is in control and we everything we do is to feed it. Everything is a distraction. Find a community/ AA group/ Inpatient treatment center. I went to rehab a year ago and it changed my life. Of coursed I’ve relapsed 5 times since then, but that’s cause I always held on to the fact I never went to jail, that I have house, car, and wife. Hell the fact that I have been able to save this amount of $$ i thought it meant I was “functioning”. I wasn’t, good luck. I am 32 so i have been literally EXACTLY where you are. Lose the narrative that alcoholism has ANYTHING positive associated with it. I hope you find peace and this is not a mean comment or a finger pointing one.

"This is what normal people feel like all the time "..... such an incredibly true statement. This pill is what I've been missing my entire life. Thats what so many addicts assume. A part is missing and that substance is what you needed to be the "better " you. Sadly, it's the complete opposite...
