I love this stitch and this tutorial. I love how you teach too! I am new to chrocheting but wanted to do this as a blanket for my son. So I started it and ended up pulling it out because the sides were not straight. Now I've got the side straight but the blanket is getting narrower meaning my stitch count is off. The problem being I don't know how to count this one. I'm familiar on how to stitch count for other stitches but this one isn't so straight forward. Can you help? PLEASE can anyone help? This has been put to the side until I can identify what I'm doing wrong

So I just got really confused. I chained 18 then after doing row 2, heard you say it still needed to be an even amount of stitches-- which is impossible because unless you start out with chaining an odd amount, as you skip the last stitch in your chain to begin slip stitching-- so I did that and now my rows of chain 5s are uneven. Can you please clarify whether or not you only *start out* with even stitches or you need to end up with even stitches? Because again with the skipping of the last chain in order to slip stitch, you are going to lose a stitch no matter what.

I had to watch this a couple times then I ended up counting how many stitches she did to double check. Your foundation row needs to be an even number, so that when you skip 1, you will have an odd number for row 2, which will allow you to start and end in the correct spot. I love video tutorials but I wish everyone would include written directions as well.

I really wish I could hold my yarn like you do....I know that I would enjoy crocheting better...Is this how you learned to hold it in the beginning or did some experience or technique help you to start holding your yarn so close? Any tips or can you make a video discussing ways to hold that yarn while crocheting?
    Thanks for your help :-)

+Elysia B (chattyprincess) Elysia...yes , when i learned to crochet at the age of 7, this is how i picked it up and just felt comfy holding my hook and yarn both....I will say, however you choose to hold them, is going to be based on you as a person..Dont let anyone, any instructor or otherwise tell you this or that way is wrong...you have to discover that for yourself...I tried holding them the other ways and i was so so slow at my work, holding them as i always have, has made me a very very fast paced crocheter and one im known for as well..to be honest, when it comes to doing a tutorial on how to hold your hook and yarn I dont feel that is something you can teach, again if the only way i can properly use my hook and yarn is the way you see in my tutorials how could i teach it to you or anyone else any other way?...Does this make sense?...Because i have tried to do it other ways and cant, so i would fail in that teaching...Yes, i could show you how to hold the hook differently, but as for the yarn, their isno way i could teach that, that is a "touchy feely" type thing and it has to be with you from the start up..So with all this being said, i hope it all makes sense and gives you a better understanding of my learning to how i hold my hook and yarn:)))..Ty for your support and let me know if you have further questions:))

Elysia B I had the same problem in the beginning. I was taught by my cousin. She holds both the hook ans yarn different than I do. While she was teaching me l held it how she did but as I got going on my own a few days later I changed both. I wasn't comfortable or fast the way she was holding them. I am now. So go by what is comfortable for you. You may find different ways so try them all and see what you like. Also I know there are videos on youtube from different creators who show different ways so you might try that. Good luck!! 😉😉

So after the third row, do you do another row of single crochet or do you chain 5 and start the pattern?

I wish I could see several rows at the beginning or end. Tried to rewind to 0 but couldn't. Can't tell if I wana try this stitch. Guess I could make my own sample to see if I like it.

+Ikhlass Newashi She used a size 5 mm hook and a 4 weight yarn...standard weight for many projects. You can use the size of your choice, but it will alter the size of your project.
