    Advanced beginners, you need to check this stitch out!I just love this stitch! It was featured in a pattern of the month club I had subscribed to on Annies Catalogue crochet website, and I was using it on a scarf when I ran across this video tutorial. It's easy, but looks so fancy. A beginner like myself needs an ego boost to encourage us to keep on practicing on what can begin to feel so pedestrian after awhile, causing discouragement. We long to make those gorgeous, fancy patterns we see others whipping out with such apparent ease. This stitch is feasibly within reach of our skill set, and comes with the renewed sense of possibilities! I do recommend a stitch marker for that skipped stitch that we are going to go back, across our work, to grab. That is IF you have trouble finding it as I did initially. That was my first use of a stitch marker! I now feel a renewed sense of progress in my skills! There is hope, even for me!

    I just made a scarf using this pattern on Monday, April 18, 2016, using a carrot colored yarn. It is beautiful. I was very pleased with it. I attended a crochet class last night at my local library, and I shared the stitch with the six other students. Everyone, including the instructor, plans to made a scarf using this beautiful pattern. Thank you for your instruction.

    Finally someone who explains the third row. It may seem like a no brainer to most experienced crocheters,but I was having trouble with my third row. Somehow my stitch count was off and no one else was explaining how to continue. So thank you very much. I’m grateful to find a tutorial that goes beyond the second row. Saved and shared👍🏼

    I like that I can understand what you are explaining and understand what I am seeing you do.
    That and I can accomplish what you are teaching, even though I use my hands differently. I hold the crochet needle in my right hand, too. But I manually yarn over with right hand pointer and thumb. With my left hand I manually move the chain to place it onto the crochet needle. I don't know how much sense that makes, but I've rarely seen others do the same so it's sometimes hard for me to follow a pattern.

    Thank you so much for this pattern! I was looking for something simple but different to do an infinity scarf for a friend and this nailed it! I had already done a large chain and hooked it to make a circle and had also done a row of dc so I was afraid I'd have to frog the whole thing and start over but I tried it on my third row and it's working out really nicely! I haven't gotten to the end yet so I'll have to come back and let you know how it turns out but I'm excited!!

    • @tanisgalik

      It is a great looking stitch and appears complicated, but is so simple. If you would like written instructions go to SimpleAndSensational.com Free patterns. It will give you the count to make the stitch work out properly. It you don't have the correct number on your current project, you can add some double crochets at each end until the design will work out. Good Luck with it.

      I turn my foundation chain sideways so I can easily see the back loop. I never have a problem locating the back loop. However, if a person is having difficulty or their stitches are too tight, Lily Chin demonstrates a way to wrap a different colored yarn as you work your foundation chain so you can easily spot the back loop and loosen the stitches. It is in her DVDs and probably one of her books.

    I found that while doing this pattern to ensure that the edges are even is to put a stitch marker in the top of your chain 3 so when you get back to that you'll know where to put the last double crochet this pattern is absolutely beautiful but the edges can get tricky

    Anushree Karthik Paithankar
    A beanie would be worked in the round starting in the center. You could watch how to make a circle which will help you with the beginning. Continue increasing the circle until it fits the crown of the person you are making the hat for. Once you have reached that point and the number of stitches matches the DC with a twist pattern, you can begin using that pattern for the rest of the hat. Once the crown is complete and you continue working in the same number for each round, you'll notice a bowl forming. You can continue to work in the pattern until the hat's height is the depth that you want. Since you are new at crocheting, it might be helpful to look at some patterns. There are several available on the Internet from various yarn companies that offer free patterns, such as RedHeart.com. This will give you an idea on how to make a hat, beanie or tam.
    Thanks for writing.

      Anushree Karthik Paithankar Sometimes it is just easier to follow a completed pattern to get the feel for how to make something. After you have made one or two, you can begin to experiment with the pattern to make it your own. There are many sites, especially various yarn sites, that offer free patterns to choose your beanie from including Ravelry.com.

    You can make it in the round. The pattern requires 4 sts. Make sure the beginning chain is divisible by 4 + 1 (for the turning st). Join with a sl st into the first sc. Skip that sc and sl st into the next sc and ch 3 (for your first dc). This is the usual way. Or you can sl st into the next sc and make a dc in that same st. It's up to you. Work the pattern. If the pattern is not consistent, you'll know you don't have the right beginning chain count. Let me know how it goes. Tanis

    aw i'm confused by the ending. This is my third pattern too learn, I may go back to trying the granny tears one, i'm too confused by working the long way up and down? when you did the vid you showed the pattern going up but the finished one looked the opposite. Maybe i'll save this vid when I'm more advanced... ty I liked your video and your easy to follow :)

    • @tanisgalik
      @tanisgalik  9 лет назад

      The pattern is worked from side to side across the row. I worked the long way so there is a finished edging on both long sides of the scarf then I don't have to add a border. I have a playlist of basic crochet stitches and patterns that maybe easier to learn as a beginner. Feel free to ask any questions.

    wow, you're the first person I've seen who "sometimes' YOH from the back. I wonder if your stitches look better or different because of such.

    • @tanisgalik
      @tanisgalik  8 лет назад

      +manic angel
      People seem to have different ways of yarning over. I usually grab from the back. However, making a dc I pause the stitch by grabbing the yarn the more traditional way and then continue completing the stitch with my usual grab from the back. I've seen the opposite done also. There are those who come from a continental knitting background who wrap the yarn around the hook with the non-dominate hand so they don't grab the yarn at all. I've looked at the stitches made by different techniques and can't see a difference in the finished product. So I guess it is the way you learn and what is comfortable for you that really counts.

    Tanis, I'm a newbie, a long time crafter of many things but am new to crocheting and knitting. My sister is great at it, she tried to show me while she was visiting here but I must confess, following along with you I picked it right up. Thanks for going slow enough for us newbies. I have one question though... In my attempt to learn to crochet it seems I get going pretty good only to see my work curving down. Some say my chain stitch is too tight and some say I need to start the chain and first row in one size needle and change to another. In my few projects I have unravel, redid and unraveled until I finally got it to look ok...but is there some trick I'm missing? I've also been told if I started my project off with a double crochet chain instead of a regular chain stitch it has a better finished age. I've seen the tutorial of that here on RUclips but haven't tried it yet. What do you think, is it just I'm a newbie and having trouble getting my stitches the same tension? I am still struggling with how to place my yarn on my left hand so I'm dropping and picking it back up frequently. :) Thanks again for this fantastic tutorial. I got it really fast!!! Aneve

    • @tanisgalik
      @tanisgalik  10 лет назад

      As far as adjusting the yarn on your left hand, I'm continually doing that myself to keep the tension at the level I need. I've always started my projects with a basic chain and built off it. It might help to use a hook one or two sizes larger than the pattern if you crochet tightly. I use to crochet very tightly so I had to always use a larger hook to get the right gauge throughout the pattern. Another thing you could try is working your first row in the back loop of the chain. That is the hump that is in back of the chain instead of one or two of front loops of the chain. That way you get a nice chain finished edge on the other side, but also you have to chain loosely to find that back loop. If you chain too tightly it is very difficult to see and work with. I know that helped me remember to begin with a looser chain and often a larger hook. Then working through the back loop gave me stitches that were more consistant in size.
      Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any other questions.

    The patterned consist of one row of regular single crochets and a second row of 3 double crochets plus the double crochet with a twist stitch. The dc with a twist is not a different form of single crochet.

    Generally I use whatever hook is appropriate for the yarn. But sometimes I will use a larger or smaller hook to adjust the fabric "softness" or "stiffness". For this project I used a J hook. I know you are correct about the light issue. I've learned a lot since I made this video. Maybe later this year I can redo this video with better lighting.

      Not a problem, most people crochet on a white table or they'll just put a white poster board on the table because it helps to see the stitches better on white back ground.

      krissnmi Yes, I've since learned that so my later videos are on a light background.

    I'd like to make a cowl, but a big one that is long, so I can wrap it around my neck 2-3 times, and even use one of the wraps on my head like a hood. Can I use this stitch to make it, going around and around and around until it's the thickness I want, or would I need to make it like a very long scarf and sew the ends together? I'm pretty new at this again, having crocheted a certain amount when I was younger. This is the first thing I've crocheted in many years. Can you help?

    • @tanisgalik
      @tanisgalik  10 лет назад

      The pattern is based on a 4 +3 foundation chain. Loosely chain as many as needed for your desired length - about 36" to 48" depending on your project. Just make sure after you subtract 3 from the number of chains, the remaining number of chains is divisible by 4 then the pattern will fit.

      The pattern is in multiples of 4. The foundation chain is 4 + 3. I just made a baby blanket and used a foundation chain of 135. The resulting blanket measured 33" x 31".

    Will it look good on a sweater ? Can you suggest some other stitches for sweater?

    • @tanisgalik
      @tanisgalik  10 лет назад

      This stitch would look good in a sweater or at least a wide band around the sweater. There are many other stitches that can be used for the complete sweater or at least in a wide band within the sweater for added interest. Basket weave, puff stitch, shell, bobble are all stitches that add a decorative touch to a project. There are several crochet stitch dictionaries available at Amazon or through your local library that could give you lots of options to choose from.

    I'm confused. When I yarn over I was taught to bring it behind hook but you bring it in front of the hook. Do you do this for all your stitches?

    • @tanisgalik
      @tanisgalik  10 лет назад

      The preferred way is to bring the yarn behind your hook. Because of a hand injury a long time ago, it is easier for me to grab it from the front and pull it through. Even though there are times when I am pausing in the middle of a stitch (usually a dc), I will bring the yarn from behind and hold it on the hook briefly. If you have ever watched the show Knit and Crochet Now on TV, you will notice all the crocheters work differently. Since many of them were knitters first, they will work with their hands as if they are knitting. These holds can also vary since there are different styles of knitting. In short, each crocheter seems to develop their own personal style of working the yarn.

      Ok thank you for clarifying this as I thought I was doing it wrong. I'm a beginner and I'm in hospital at the moment in my 6th week. There's no wifi so I'm trying to watch as little youtube and go on the internet as less as possible. Although I've taken a notion I want to crochet an afghan blanket or something but I can't get patterns and even when I'm home our internet is slow so I find it hard finding free patterns and websites that offer free patterns etc. I like youtube but I'm partially sighted and sometimes find it hard to follow videos.
