    My riding days are over. When you displayed "the leather sap", my first reaction was that it was a horse paddle. There are horse crops with a weighted paddle end and a thin braded handle that would accomplish the same thing.
    For that matter, I knew Lash LaRue who passed away many years ago. He carried two whips in the movies and not handguns. Additionally, a person can carry a quirt, a Cossack whip.

    When it comes to real close quarters work the slapjack has some advantages over the firearm. You can´t shoot yourself in the foot with it, you don´t have to worry about stray bullets and possibly can use it when a gun would be excessive force. It does have a reach disadvantage.

    It's cool to see asymmetric designs like this for the Machiavelli of the libre knife guild gaining traction. I collect saps where i can and the closest i have is the "crooked coffin" from Dirty Mike's Leather. It favors one side, but has a number of corners that would leave a nasty mark if you made an edge strike.

    Excellent presentation. There is a site titled "legality of saps and blackjacks" that addresses the use of this instrumentality. They give the applicable statute for each state, with the caveat that they could be wrong with their advice. As a retired criminal defense attorney, state and federal courts (I now teach) research the applicable state law in your jurisdiction. Remember that a county can invoke stricter restrictions than the state has imposed. This is also true in many cases regarding the carrying of knives. Remember silence and non-involvement in arguments (whatever the subject matter is) will prevent many situations from becoming adversarial. Do not open the door and allow misery into your life. These instrumentalities are classified as deadly weapons akin to knives and firearms. You do not want to be thrust into the world of criminal law as a defendant. It is not like in the situations depicted by the entertainment industry. You could be denied bail and spend several years imprisoned before trial and if found innocent you will not be reimbursed for your losses. From a legal standpoint, pepper spray or even a Taser will provide more of an affirmative defense to an adversarial event. If interested, I carry Police Magnum stream in the 4 oz size. They have a size for every situation.

    This is a beautiful tool. If I win the lottery, I will probably order one.
    In one sense, I love that it's not perfectly symmetrical. In another sense, I think the shape could be a weakness. With the traditional sap, gripping the right end from either side puts the user in the right grip. With this one, one much ensure that the sap is rotated to have the finger grooves and the thumb rest on the correct side. Once one gets the sap oriented that way, this design is great. As a self-defense tool, I wonder whether that would be a weakness. Self-defense tools are often grabbed in a moment of stress with almost no time margin. In one sense, I realize that a sap is going to be carried in a way that only one hand is likely to reach for the sap. The sap could be positioned so that the grab by this hand would almost certainly be oriented properly. In another sense, odd things can happen in an emergency, and I would worry that I would be holding this sap the wrong way in a desperate situation. How significant do you think that risk would be? Are the ergonomics when the grip is right that much better than the ergonomics of a regular sap?

    • @411Outdoors
      @411Outdoors  Месяц назад +1

      This one’s designed to be primarily a cleaver type of sap and it’s design perfect for that. I would say it’s an Apple to orange comparison. Other saps major on the flat side.

  • @RV-ardvark
    @RV-ardvark Месяц назад

    The leather sap is a favorite of mine. I have used collapsable batons on duty for many years, but I've only found them useful for picking up nasty things that I didn't want to touch. A leather sap can impart a harder impact than a collapsable baton and it is more concealable both in carry and in use while in the hand. Having a weapon that is somewhat concealed while in the hand can certainly be advantageous.

    Whoa, clear up to past the middle of the video, all warnings about the use of this item.
    It’s a jungle out here. Even the cops & all their “training” totally f up on what appears to be routine on RUclips. It’s called over reach, and they don’t cease & desist until a court order tells them to.
    A knife wielding suspect can be immediately shot, everywhere.
    For the sake of life or limb, you’d better submit- no matter the what…
    Do you agree with that?
    I don’t any more, and just for reference, in the Art of War by Tsu the instruction to stop a thing, attack or disease, whatever “before it can take form” is the advise.
    So, what’s all this waiting for an actual threatening situation to manifest before doing anything?
    My point is that nobody (really) can anticipate what, where, how threatening situations can occur, until it’s too late.
    And I am very experienced at this, and still I have stepped right into it (security) every few years or so.
