  • Making and keeping tracking of your CANDLE RECIPES is important for consistent products batch to batch. This applies to ANY HANDCRAFTED BUSINESS! Making a recipe is just one part. Tracking those recipes going forward is another, and has several benefits to help you manage your products, your inventory, your costs of goods, etc. In this video I talk about the benefits of a candle recipe, how I track MY RECIPES, and the software I use to do it all.

    Thank you Wade, yes you are 100% right. I used a book to write my recipes but figuring out the cost of making each candle was a nightmare. Still I persisted until I lost my book late November last year and fortunately for me I saw your first video around same time and quickly signed up for Craftybase. OMG I was absolutely amazed by this inventory system. Since the loss of my recipe book I’ve created recipes and have been able to track my inventory, cost of goods which enabled me to set my prices and identify which products were working or not working by identifying batches I made. When I joined I was totally confused but the quick response to my queries and information available is amazing. They walked through it very timely and patiently. I can’t describe how wonderful they have been. Now that the end of financial tax year is up on us here in Australia, 30 June, it’s a simple matter for me to send a profit and loss statement to my accountant. I make sure all my expenses are entered as they occur as well as sales which fortunately is done automatically. What I love about it is that any sales that occur on my website or other platforms Crafty base is aligned with them. So I know exactly what sold through which channel and what I have in stock. I could not function without it. I just wish I found you and Craftybase back in June 2020. Thank you ever so much for introducing this amazing inventory system. You saved me. Sue 😁

    I've watched a lot of your videos and this is the 2nd video I've seen where you show how to use CraftyBase. It seems like a really great tool to keep track of things for a candle business. I'm just researching right now. I would like to start off doing this as just some extra income on the side and see how it goes. But you make candle making look fun and rewarding- not just financially but as a crafter who is proud of the great product they make. I really appreciate your willingness and ability to help other people who are interested in this hobby/business. I honestly don't know how you find the time to run your business, make the products, make videos and spend time with your family and friends. lol

    I got to this a day late, lol. I created the perfect color (imo) for a test candle & failed to document that little detail. You can guess the rest. A friend saw it & gushed over the smell & color. She asked if I'd make several of that exact candle for a baby shower. I'm not ready to sell to the general public, but do make candles for friends & family. I usually gift them unless they want several. Then I charge my cost. Thankfully that's something I've done from the start to see if I could make this a business. Trying to recreate a color after the fact is really stressful. Lesson learned the hard way!

    Hi Wade! Thank you for your videos, they have been so helpful! I am now using Craftybase for my pottery business but have recently added candles to my product line. Being new to the candle business, I have a "Newb" question... how do you handle the inventory count in CB when you use a candle for testing? Do you count it as a sale for $0.00 or is there a better way to log a test candle?

I noticed on the same recipe that when I put in 5 MANUFACTURE BATCH QUANTITY the retail suggested price is $1.41 USD. However, when I did 1 MANUFACTURE BATCH QUANTITY, the retail suggested price was $2.42. Why is the rate different when I do the quantity of 5 vs 1 MANUFACTURE BATCH QUANTITY? Do you have video on batch recipes tutorials using Craftybase by chance? Thank you in advance for your help.

      This sounds like something potentially wrong eith your recipe or product setup. OR.... if you are including your own labor time in the recipe....Tha would do it as well. It's less cost efficient to make 1 candle at a time vs 6 for example

    How so you do labels where it costs you just pennies? Do you print your own. Also, when you put in your supplies, say wax for example, do you add in the cost plus your shipping ??

    • @BlackTieBarn
      @BlackTieBarn  3 года назад

      Labels can coat pennies once you start having them bulk printed for you. But starting out or when printing custom or small quantities at home will definitely be more than that.
      As far as wax or supplies.... yes always include shipping. They are part of your inventory value and your cogs (cost of goods sold). Part of the cost of your materials and thus cost of your product. Craftynase will distribute the shipping cost out proportionally across all the items on your expense.
      Hope that helps

    • @BlackTieBarn

      Hey Michelle. All parts of the recipe are cogs. So if it's recipe, then yes... both.
      But bags... no I wouldn't consider than part of the product. Which means not part of cogs. I wouldl make that just a general operating expense personally. Like advertising, selling expense, office supplies or whatever.
      May want to ask bookkeeping or accountant om thst to be safe. I just not sure why it would be a cogs personally as it's not part of the product.
