Hey Wade! Thank you for the excellent education on the business of making candles. I watched a ton of your videos BEFORE making my first candle last Saturday. So here is what I discovered about Vybar 260. I've been experimenting with my soy blend wax and discovered something interesting. All my initial test candles had a LOT of frosting. I wasn't so bothered by it as it looked interesting to me. Then I showed my very first test candles to my family. They weren't down with the look of the frosting on the candles. Hmmm... THEN yesterday, I decided to perform 3 more tests. I took my formulation and in one of my 2 oz test candles, I put a small amount of Vybar (less than 1/16 tsp) and eliminated Vybar from the other 2 tests. The formulations and weight of candles were otherwise identical. And no, Vybar wasn't incorporated into the wax I purchased. And yes, I saw a bunch of info about not adding too much Vybar because it can bind up the fragrance...so I was really careful. My results: The candle WITH Vybar had frosting on the top and on the sides just like my first test candles. Guess what, NO FROSTING on the 2 candles without Vybar! They looked beautiful! Zero frosting! Great depth in color, smooth tops, and no cracks or holes Perfect! Even the scent was stronger. Guess my soy blend wax doesn't like Vybar. 😞 You are my inspiration! I watch many other videos but you by far, provide the best information. Some other presenters offer wack information. I discovered not everyone should be teaching us newbies how to make candles. ;-)
No problem at all and thanks for the feedback. Yeah, the truth is vybar can have different impacts or none at all depending on the wax. Even eliminating vybar from the conversation completely.... frosting doesn't happen on all. Or when it shows up varies. You can make a batch of 20 candles. 10 may get it in a week, another 5 a month later. And the other 5..... three months later. Lol
Great video Wade. Your contents are always so detailed and helpful. Can you please explain the difference between vybar an stearic? I see that people tend to use both for the oil retention. When is it more beneficial to use one over the other?
Hey Belinda... vybar is essentialy the alternatice to stearic acid. Both are used for the same purposes (hardener, fragrance oil retention, color vibrancy, etc).
Thank God I found this video. I have been thinking of adding Vybar in my soycoco blend but I don’t know how to add it. So you add the vybar % on top of the 100%wax? Or it should it be included in the total wax wgt? Thank u in advance!
Thanks. And yes you can. Although I don't and wait until I add to pouring pot. I do that so I don't ever have to wonder whether I added it already or not. Lol. Plus of you ever dont want to add it, it's too late. Once you have a set process in place... not a bad idea. But I find added flexibility when I keep them separate. :)
I've never added vybar to my wax, so I found this quite interesting. I use Coconut wax so I've never looked to see if it even has Vybar in it, I use Coconut 83. I guess I'll look, but I'm never hadan issue with fragrance retention or cold/hot throw. I love Coconut wax for this reason.
Hey Wayne, Coconut wax generally would not already have vybar in it unless its a coconut wax blend (then it may). You would want to ask your supplier. I would be 95% confident is does not, though.
Thank you so much for all of the information, your videos are so helpful! When I was researching Vybar (before finding this video), I was under the impression that Vybar 103 could be used in container candles as long as the wax melt point was >130…is that safe? Or do I need to use Vybar 260 in my container candle even though the melt point is >130? Thank you!!! 😊
I can't say for sure. Basically vybar is a replacement for stearic acid for use in candle making. But the effect that stearic had on soap may differ than that of vybar in candles
I love watching your videos, they are super helpful and clear! Please can you tell me if Vy bar would be suitable to use in Golden Wax 494 wax melt snap bars and shapes at all?
Sure. Its the one called "Best inventory software... if you go to my channel page and browse all the videos you should see it there along with many others. Here is a link directly to it though: ruclips.net/video/9fk5uNPC_L4/видео.html
All of this makes so much sense. Thank you once again my friend. I have been away and have missed watching your videos, but I'm back. :) Would you be able to do a video on pure beeswax? I'm finding some cons to making a candle out of it, but there are so many pros. I'm not sure if it's something I'm doing :/
Each vybar type has a melt point so you'd want to add hotter than that. But the hotter you add it the easier it is to blend in. Vybar 260 should be added above 125 minimum and 103 above 140 minimum.... but I'd be adding both hotter if possible before you add FO as well. 160-190 range
WOW. I really liked your video on explaining beautifully about Vybars. Just suppose if I want to use 0.5 - 2% Vybar then what is best time to mix this additive? Will it be after melting point or FO added?
Not sure to be honest. I know very little about using that wax and it's meant to be soft. We have the same problem in the candle wax world. Not a whole lot you can do without completely changing the wax. :/
Great video! Thank you, I just started making candles and ordered IGI 4625 for pillar candles(complex molds). I am getting small white spots on some areas of the candle. Can Vybar help me get rid of those?
I was going to buy vybar today but just saw this video and I’m thinking, no. 🤔 Looking to gain a better HT with 464 but likely going to go with adding paraffin. Unless that’s a no, too. Do you have a video on that? Mixing 464 with paraffin? I’m losing my mind.. LOL
Mixing with paraffin will give you better HT results than vybar would. Vybar can help a touch but that isn't its main purpose. Vybar gives the ability to hold more FO but 46r already holds plenty. 464 just isn't a great wax for HT, so it's an uphill battle. Lol
@@BlackTieBarn 464 was great to play with it but not go into business with I’m finding.. as soon as I get through this 150 lbs of 464 I’m switching to 6006.. I’m in Canada and we don’t seem to have as many suppliers, albeit it’s the pandemic. Thanks for your reply!
I’ve been told vybar in 464 helps with the creators and ugly, rough tops but I didn’t hear you confirm that in this video. Did you forget to mention that or is my info bad?
It really isn't it purpose and it is I consistent on helping with surface flaws. Yes, it can help..... but its not 100%. The other reason I didn't mention specifially 464 is becaus 364 has additives already and most suppliers do not recommend using vybar with 464. As I don't use 464 myself I couldn't speak to that and didn't want to speculate. I try to give info on things I'm familiar with and can confident speak about so that I don't intentionally lead anyone astray. So, it's not that I forgot... just impossible to cover every subtopic in every video. I was focused mostly on the main purposes of vybar. :) But, no.... I wouldn't day your info is bad. Just that to test for yourself. Many candle makers have entirely different experiences across the board whether it's waxes oils, wicks, or additives. This is one of those topics that isn't clear cut. It may help you some, it may not. When I get a chance to test this myself, I will though for sure. :)
It definitely could and worth a try. 464 really isn't made or meant for making wax melts. It's a container wax. So, if you really want to use it for melts... I think adding some vybar might be a good idea anyway. How much is unclear. I would start with 1/4 - 1/2 tsp per pound.
Wade…have you used vybar 260 in coconut apricot wax? I already add my fragrance at about 225-230. Wondering if anyone has any information on adding vybar above 230 degrees.
Sometimes... after a couple of burns i start to smell burning smell.. would vyber stop this? Plz also tell me how to stop the burning smell.... thanks.
Nah, vybar I doubvybar would help please with that. Burning smell is usually too many other additives like dye, overwicked, or bad oils. But there can be other factors as well
Hey, I use paraffin with 15% stearin, in a silicone mold, but I still have small bubbles on the candle surfaces, in the details. Should I increase the stearin (20%)? Add Vybar? Change type of paraffin? Thanks !
I have nature G 3 soy wax and only used 6% of FO. I bought vybar 260 because I thought it would give me more of a hot throw. I use container for my soy wax and thinking about using 8% of FO. The question is if I want to have a deeper color should I use the vybar?
Hey Talya... vybar will generally help will cor consistency and richness in waxes that are otherwise difficult to achieve. So what I would do is make one candle without it and one with evaluate the difference in color. See how much it helps for you. :)
Hi Wade, I saw another RUclipsr today mention that using vybar increases the HT of a candle; it was mentioned but not explained. I almost bought it today, but after watching your video and hearing your explanation I think I won’t now and save my coins as you know it’s already really expensive. I’m still testing and really like my Soy and Coconut wax blend it has a good scent throw but I wish it was stronger. The vessels that I use do not have a lid and I haven’t been able to find a suitable one yet. Do lids really make a big difference? If not vybar then what would you recommend for getting the strongest CT and HT. Sorry, I know I’ve asked you about 4 different questions here 🤦🏾♀️ Thank you in advance 🙏🏾
Hey Adele. So.... vybar CAAAN help sometimes with HT but it's not its purpose and it's hit and miss. Since you saw my video I won't go into all the details again. But I've had it help occasionally (at least I thought I did). But most of the time I detected no different in HT. It will affect other things though, some in a negative way. Like jar adhesion since it hardens your wax a bit. It may be worth a shot to try... I just wouldn't get your hopes up too much until you do. If you decide to, I wouldn't use more than 1/2 tap per pound. Basically 2grams per pound. But probably safe up to 3grams. Also, vybar was really meant for paraffin wax so that it could hold oil better. Hard to see or know if it does much for soy or apricot or coconut waxes As far as other things thst might help. It's tough with some waxes. Without paraffin, it's hard to ensure great HT. Paraffin is king in that regard. Your best option is more expensive higher quality oils. But those get pricey. :/ Or, only using oils that seem to work well snd throw well in your wax. That, and longer cure times.
It certainly could. Vybar could potentially help in 2 ways. 1) traps in FO a bit better and 2) increases melt point of the wax by up to s couple degrees. You'd just have to test though. If using a super soft wax it might not make enough of a difference to notice
I'm a newbie and a hobbyist, I use Coconut 83 and need to ship my candles out from OKC which was 114 degrees today to the east coast to friends/family. Would adding this help with the wax not becoming a melted mess during shipping?
You can really trick it. Just wick properly or add other materials. Blend in some soy for example. That would help a little. But some waxes alone just burn longer than others
Great info Wade, thanks! What about for coconut wax? I have a 2-1 container/melts wax from candles and supplies that is mottling something fierce and I’d prefer it not, could vybar help? CT & HT are great just not a pretty candle
It definitely could. There are 3 main vybars. Vybar 260 for waxes with a melt point under roughly 130 I believe. Vybar 130 for waxes with melt point over 130ish And vybar 343 which is meant to KEEP the mottling effect as many want to keep the mottling effect. You'd want either 260 or 130 if you want to eliminate the mottling
Hello. I really enjoyed this video but I have a question. I use pillar of bliss wax for wax melts and I am struggling with the length of time my melts have scent. Should I use vybar or something else? I’ve tried vybar 103 and it doesn’t seem to be helping.
I don't use any vybar in my melts as vybar really is a hardener and allow more fragrance oil to be added. It necessarily incrrease HT. What % of FO are you using? Also, on hotter burners/meters with hotter bulbs the scent will go quicker and not last as long.
Yes you can. It may or may not help with the HT through. You'll just need to test. Just know, adding vybar will make the wax a tad harder and not adhere to the jars quite as well. Vybar is a hardene. But if you find it helps with the HT, than I think that is more important every day of the week.
Hi ☺️ new to candle making I’ve been testing for a long while, struggling with getting hot throw from my soy 10 wax, would I be able to add vybar? If so which would be best ?
Hiiii, I am having troubles with my hot throw, I am using paraffin mix with palm wax. I can receive any advice you can give me, If I add vyber it could help me with the HT?
High, it could but it isn't its real intention. Make sure you use vybar 130 (its meant for higher melt point waxes like palm or hard paraffin. You wouldn't want to use vybar 260 most like. Also, palm can be tough to wick. So keep working on wicking and you may see improvement with HT. Do you know what paraffin you are using? There are hundreds of kinds. Also, are you oils quality? Where do you buy them if you don't mind me asking. If they are from a reputable supplier, you shouldn't have an issues.
@@BlackTieBarn hiii!! I live in Colombia and I buy them from a place specialize in candles, and like the cold throw is really good. But in the moment I lit the candle it doesn’t appear any scent, it could be the wick? I am using one of cotton of 8 diameter
Hi Wade, so I tried blending 30% palm wax and 70% 464 soy wax, in hopes to achieve a better HT. until I read about about vybar and how it helps in retaining fragrance and helping in HT. I was wondering if I should add vybar to my palm and soy blend? Or add vybar to 100% 464 soy wax?
Vybat is hit or mjss with helping hot throw. It isn't it's purpose so results vary. If you want to try it, you could add to soy 464 if you want. I would be hesitant to adding it to palm though.
I wouldn't use 343 personally as it's a special vybar meant to protect mottling waxes. For 4627 I would use vybar 260 if you were going to use one. But no.... if it was me I definitely would use it with 4627. But that's just me. Lol
Hi, when you add Vybar do you need to up your percentage as well? For instance if I test this in soy 464 I usually use 9% FO a should I use 12% with vybar added?
I may not be understanding your question. But, percentages don't change. They are relative to changes in volume. 9% is 9% regardless. If you use 9% in your normal batch of say 1lb of wax then you would still use 9% in a larger batch of 3lbs. Which means the amount of FO would be higher because 9% of 3 pounds is more than 9% of 1 pound. I'm not sure if that is what your asking. Or, if you are asking if you use more FO just because you add vybar? Then no... no need. You can if you want but no, adding vybar doesn't mean you need to add more FO. I would personally never use more FO then you normal would need anyway. I have no idea if this helps. 😬
I typically would just use a basic mask if anything at all. But...if going to be doing a large batches all day long and an area that isn't well ventilated, l use a 3m ventilator. I'll have to track down my specific one.
Shooks vybar and stearic acid u mentioned aren't available here in my country (Philippines) they just labeled here stearic acid without any specifications.
Poderia ter legenda em português pra ajudar nós brasileiras queri muito saber sobre esse produto vybar pra que serve, como usar e quanto usar já vi em vários tutoriais e nada legendo uma lástima. 🇧🇷
@@BlackTieBarn hello Wade how much of the Vybar to use in my 8oz Jelly Jar. I measure in grams and the total wax for one 8oz Jelly is 162 and I do 10%FO how would I measure the Vybar
@@tawanalm I typically use .05 - 1% at most per pound. But remember to work in grams for vybar since its such a small amount. One way to do this is convert your wax amount to grams first. In your case 8oz of wax equals about 226g, Then take somewhere between .05 and 1% of that. 1% would be about 2.2grams of vybar. I would probably go with about 1.6g of vybar. If this helps, I use about 3grams per pound. I dont work in amounts smaller than a pound but its just a math problem after that. :)
@@BlackTieBarn I hate to sound lost but I’m lost so my scale does not give the decimal point when measuring grams. I wonder if that’s equals to 1/8tsp?
Hi wade!! My husband and I have recently started a candle business and have been having some issues with our ht. We use soy 464 wax and our wondering if maybe we need to switch or what can we do to get a better hot throw.. what is the best way to choose a wick? Maybe we are using the wrong ones.. any advice you can offer would be great thank you..
Hi Melissa, sorry for the late reply. I occasionally miss a comment here and there. I just did a 2 part mini series on 464 you may want to check out. The short answer is 464 is very dependent on the FOs you select. They need to work together well which you have to test for. HT is hit or miss with 464. Best way to choose a wick is through testing as well. Start with any basic recommendations you find on wick charts and adjust. I have a couple videos on testing wicks as well you can watch if you want. As far as switching waxes, that is up to you. All waxes have Pros and Cons. Some have great HT but other annoying issues. And visa versa.
You can try using stearic acid instead of vybar. They pretty much achieve the same results. Its really preference and pricing. I use vybar personally ove stearic acid. But more than anything, its just because of what I am used to. :)
Thank you, probably will stick with the vybar like you are doing. I have been using it for 4 years now. Asked because I am always, of course, open to improving. I love watching your videos, they are super helpful and clear! Please can you tell me if Vy bar would be suitable to use in Golden Wax 494 wax melt snap bars and shapes at all?
Sure it definitely could. Try adding 1/4 up to 1/2 tsp and see how it works for you. :)
Can you provide a link for the Vybar you use? Thanks 🙂
Could you please tell me which video did you tell about the work sheets you work with when making your candles. Thank you
Would you be able to do a video on pure beeswax? I'm finding some cons to making a candle out of it, but there are so many pros. I'm not sure if it's something I'm doing :/
I definitely will when I can. Little backed up at the moment but will add it to my list. And, welcome back! 😁
Lol, I can imagine.
I will use my patience skills until that time.
Is there a vybar that I can use with my Ceda Serica wax?
Love your videos so helpful 🥰
😊 Thanks so much! Happy they help!
At what point in the process do I add the Viber? Is it at 180° or less?
Each vybar type has a melt point so you'd want to add hotter than that. But the hotter you add it the easier it is to blend in. Vybar 260 should be added above 125 minimum and 103 above 140 minimum.... but I'd be adding both hotter if possible before you add FO as well. 160-190 range
WOW. I really liked your video on explaining beautifully about Vybars. Just suppose if I want to use 0.5 - 2% Vybar then what is best time to mix this additive? Will it be after melting point or FO added?
I add it first. You want to make sure it's thoroughly mixed in
We make skateboarding 🛹 wax and since summer is here we need to the wax to not melt out in the heat. What can we use?
Not sure to be honest. I know very little about using that wax and it's meant to be soft. We have the same problem in the candle wax world. Not a whole lot you can do without completely changing the wax. :/
Great video! Thank you, I just started making candles and ordered IGI 4625 for pillar candles(complex molds). I am getting small white spots on some areas of the candle. Can Vybar help me get rid of those?
Probably not. Try pouring a little hotter. That's usually caused by cooling too quickly and tiny micro bubbles cause white marks
I was going to buy vybar today but just saw this video and I’m thinking, no. 🤔
Looking to gain a better HT with 464 but likely going to go with adding paraffin.
Thank you
👍
But, no.... :)
Amazing
Thanks
Quick question, at what point in the candle making process do we add the vybar ? Is it while we melt the wax or after we pour it into the pitcher?
Add it first while wax is hottest. Between 185 and 200
What a great video
Thanks! :)
Hi Wade I have been making wax melts with GW464 and I have had good results with HT and CT my real issue is the molds don
It definitely could and worth a try. 464 really isn't made or meant for making wax melts. It's a container wax. So, if you really want to use it for melts... I think adding some vybar might be a good idea anyway. How much is unclear. I would start with 1/4 - 1/2 tsp per pound.
Just the answer I was looking for. Thanks
Thanks !
Just how does one go about measuring hot throw by percentage? @10:52
Hard to see or know if it does much for soy or apricot or coconut waxes
As far as other things thst might help. It's tough with some waxes. Without paraffin, it's hard to ensure great HT. Paraffin is king in that regard. Your best option is more expensive higher quality oils. But those get pricey. :/ Or, only using oils that seem to work well snd throw well in your wax. That, and longer cure times.
@@BlackTieBarn Thank you so much for this. It was really helpful. Appreciate you 🙏🏾
@@withlovebyads no problem!
Hi Wade! Would the Vybar help with the sweating in the summer months? I have issues when doing pop ups in the heat.
It wouldn't make enough of a difference to matter in high heat. At best, maybe raise the melt point a degree basically
How do I make container paraffin wax burn longer?
You can really trick it. Just wick properly or add other materials. Blend in some soy for example. That would help a little. But some waxes alone just burn longer than others
Great info Wade, thanks!
What about for coconut wax? I have a 2-1 container/melts wax from candles and supplies that is mottling something fierce and I’d prefer it not, could vybar help? CT & HT are great just not a pretty candle
It definitely could. There are 3 main vybars.
Vybar 260 for waxes with a melt point under roughly 130 I believe.
Vybar 130 for waxes with melt point over 130ish
And vybar 343 which is meant to KEEP the mottling effect as many want to keep the mottling effect.
You'd want either 260 or 130 if you want to eliminate the mottling
@@BlackTieBarn great! Thanks so much for responding so quickly!
No problem. Hope it helps
TW30 tart wax can be used vybar 103
Hi Ana. Most likely a little.... but as with most blends, definitely want to test. :)
@@BlackTieBarn thanks are the test with little product
Hi there. Love your videos. Would I be able to use vybar 260 in Joy Wax? I have a couple light fragrances I want to use but want strong scent throw.
You can. But it's purpose isn't to increase HT. You can try it though
Hello, which vybar would you recommend to 6006. Thank you!
I wouldn't add any to 6006
Hiiii, I am having troubles with my hot throw, I am using paraffin mix with palm wax.
Great video, thank you!
No. Thanks Elisa!
@@BlackTieBarn Thank you. will keep that.
Could you do a video(s) on how to get the most out of a wax ct/ht?
Great idea. Thank you!
Is it crazy to use 343 with 4627 for an extra HT umph or is that overkill?
I wouldn't use 343 personally as it's a special vybar meant to protect mottling waxes. For 4627 I would use vybar 260 if you were going to use one. But no.... if it was me I definitely would use it with 4627. But that's just me. Lol
@@BlackTieBarn Thanks for the reply. I'm going to add an eight of a teaspoon of 260 just to see.
Could you recommend/link a respirator that you like?
I typically would just use a basic mask if anything at all. But...if going to be doing a large batches all day long and an area that isn't well ventilated, l use a 3m ventilator. I'll have to track down my specific one.
Shooks vybar and stearic acid u mentioned aren't available here in my country (Philippines) they just labeled here stearic acid without any specifications.
Can you add Vybar to Coconut apricot wax?
I never have so I am not sure. It's worth a shot. :)
Poderia ter legenda em português pra ajudar nós brasileiras queri muito saber sobre esse produto vybar pra que serve, como usar e quanto usar já vi em vários tutoriais e nada legendo uma lástima. 🇧🇷
Can Vabar be added to coconut wax
Sure. Just test to see of any benefit
I can't find vybar anywhere.
Flaming candle, lonestar, Aztec, etc. :)
Vybar 260 can it be used for Tarts?
Thank you
It can! But, depending on the melt point if your wax, you might want to try to vybar 103 instead. :) You can test with both.
@@BlackTieBarn thank you
Hey Wade, thanks for the Vybar knowledge. When using an additive like Vybar, can we still use natural/ vegan, etc on the candle packaging?
I would be safe and say vegan blend. I always hesitate to say 100% vegan or natural just because of additives, FO, etc.
@@BlackTieBarn Thanks Wade.
I always say less is more
I would often agree!
how do you add vybar please
About 1% of wax weight in grams.
So around 5 or 6 grams per pound of wax. Not much
@@BlackTieBarn hello Wade how much of the Vybar to use in my 8oz Jelly Jar.
@@BlackTieBarn means math have never been friends lol but thank soo much for this I have a little scooper and I weigh in grams already for my wax too
@@BlackTieBarn I hate to sound lost but I’m lost so my scale does not give the decimal point when measuring grams.
I use a small amount of 260 to the pre blended container wax I use because it tends to mottle. Is there a better option besides Vybar?
You can try using stearic acid instead of vybar. They pretty much achieve the same results. Its really preference and pricing. I use vybar personally ove stearic acid. But more than anything, its just because of what I am used to. :)
Thank you, probably will stick with the vybar like you are doing. I have been using it for 4 years now. Asked because I am always, of course, open to improving.
