The best part of the game is easily the battles. One of the most creative and fun battle systems I have ever seen in an RPG.
It really was! I'd love for them to make a sequel with a stronger story and characters!
I'm surprised your channel isn't more popular. You have the best JRPG reviews around. Great job here.
Thank you so much! I always try something new with every review, so I’m glad that effort didn’t go unnoticed! I hope you check out the reviews that aren’t for JRPGs as well! Again, thank you so much!
Thank you for giving the battle system a thorough review. Too many reviewers gloss over it and don't give a clear idea of how the battle works.
If there's anything that may draw me into buying this game, it's the refined and nuanced battle system. The "session" system sounds unique and satisfying. I'm all about seeking out JRPGs with great raw gameplay and battle systems. Story? Yeah, whatever every JRPG has a ridiculous story. The gameplay and battle have to be fun and engaging, above ALL else.
You’re welcome! I try my best to do detailed breakdowns when needed, but there are some that feel that I get too detailed that it stops making sense for some! Really appreciate the comment!
I heard the OST and immediately refused to learn more about the game until I got ahold of it.
IT'S FINALLY HERE
It’s well worth the wait too, thank goodness!
Quality review! Thanks for the great content. You have a great voice for voice overs.
Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed it!
It’s just so charming. And very comfortable for someone that has anxiety like I do.
Persona’s scheduling is often too stressful for me and SMT’s frequent difficulty spikes are often too frustrating.
Didn't know you reviewed this. Looks fun may have to move it up in my backlog list
I really like the combat system in this one! I think it holds up well
Great review as always. I’ll definitely be picking this one up.
Glad to be of help!
amazing review man, i appreciate your effort to research the series as a whole.
Thank you for watching! Glad you enjoyed it!
I hope you stay on RUclips, even though I’m assuming you do this in your free time the quality of your videos is far greater than any RUclipsd who does this full time. I am looking forward to eventually being here when you hit 1 million subs!
Thanks!
I really loved this game and just like you, I didn't think a "Japanese idol culture"-centric game was gonna cut it. I ended up falling in love with the characters and the combat system was so good I couldn't stop playing.
I would say however that I played on Hard and decided to grind like 5 levels off the XP dungeon and it completely imbalanced the game afterwards. The last boss was incredibly easy. Really want to jump into a NG+ eventually tho.
Anyways, fantastic review as always. Thank you for all you do!!
Thank you! The exp dungeons really did imbalance the game a lot. I mean, if you're gonna basically tell people not to abuse the exp dungeons via help text, maybe that part of the game needs to be thought out a bit more?
Great review! Not interested in the game myself because I'm not a big fan of either of the franchises it depends on, but I certainly enjoyed listening to you talk about it! I've seen talk of this game around and I was curious what it was all about.
I think you got a pretty good snippet of what it’s all about! I actually didn’t have a tough time dodging spoilers because there’s barely any? I had to figure out how to talk about that lol
I bought this game when if first came out on the Wii U but never finished it. Bought it again on Switch and finally got to finish the game and it was great! Playing in handheld mode is a godsend for completing RPGs. Loved getting to know all the characters through side quests and text messages. The music is super catchy too. That dungeon with the mannequins though... ugh...
What about the dungeon with the mannequins? 🤔 And yea, I really liked TMS and what it offered! Lots of fun new mechanics, and Sessions is super OP!
@@BacklogBattle The dungeon was just very tedious. And you're right sessions are very OP lol.
As much as I love the game, I just feel that most of it are simply rinse and repeat and it gets repetitive quite quickly. The side quest aren't really that different from each other and the progression of the story is kinda meh, I just don't feel that we progress that much even when starting a new chapter. Also, protect MAMORI!!
That’s kind of how I felt. There’s so much of not figuring out the root cause of the issue, leading to a story that develops a lot slower than any game in the SMT/FE franchises! But the Session gameplay though! So much fun!
Ya I agree sidequest arent great. Side stories are decent enough
I feel like watching some reviews on Tokyo Mirage Sessions...Alex will have what I need!!! :)
Still curious about this game because I am on a mission to play a bunch of modern setting JRPGs and I feel like I need this one.
I think you do too! It’s definitely an interesting way to incorporate Fire Emblem characters into a SMT/Persona style game for sure! Fun battle system too!
That was the best review and the only one that convinced me to play Tokyo Mirage Sessions. And you are the only one who nailed it explaining the sessions system. Thanks a lot for this video!
Thank you so much! The Sessions system is so well done! Probably one of my favorite battle systems out there!
Just finished this game last night. I really enjoyed it as a sort of Persona lite (I know there might be better SMT comparisons), but of course there wasn’t much FE in terms of mechanics. I liked how there was no calendar system so I could see everything in one play through. Battle system was super fun especially as you improved your sessions. Also loved how there was a side dungeon with items that made grinding levels (something I often get turned off by in JRPGs) when needed trivial, but by the same token, the final conflicts felt almost too easy.
Biggest disappointment was the lack of dating. Not being able to romance my girl Kiria? wtf Atlus 😂 🤣. I know idols can’t date but Fortuna is not intended to be an average agency.
It’s odd right? It’s fantasy in a sense but they don’t want to perpetuate things that can’t happen in real life. Very interesting to read that you liked some of the parts that I did too!
I am right there with you on team Kiria! And it's super weird since both Persona and Fire Emblem have romance options, and Fire Emblem's romances even end in marriage, in most cases
Chroms spirit looks badass, glowing eyes are awesome
Right? I love Chrom’s design!
I have been watching a lot of your videos lately and man you have almost the same exact taste as I do in games :D
Oh and Tokyo Miragei s awesome, I couldnt take the story seriously in the least but I dont think its meant to be, its silly and doesnt make much sense most of the time :D I like the aditions of the switch port but it just straight up looks worse than the Wii U version :(
Gotta say tho, as much as I like the game, this isnt the cross between Fire Emblem and SMT I was hoping for :D
Thanks for the advice about the Trails series and I always love your comments? Can I ask you to repost it in the "Which Game In The Cold Steel Series Should You Play First Video?" I actually asked people to comment and give their experiences and advice regarding it, and I'd hate for people to miss what you said!
As far as Tokyo Mirage Sessions goes, I do think you're right that they were aiming for some lightheartedness to contrast the typically dark storyline of Shin Megami Tensei and felt that it was successful because of it. I think those are good things to notice, and the difference between contrasting a game with others versus identifying the intended vision that the developers were hoping to achieve!
Yes Kiria is best girl! Tsubasa a close second!
Btw I love this game!!
Beat it on hard and now playing it on Lunatic mode!!!
It’s so much fun! I hope that make a follow up!
This still is my favourite game on switch.
It’s a great game!
Yeah, TMS had a LOT of flack from both SMT fans AND FE fans, as it didn't really give both sides what they wanted and instead focused on something that has nothing to do with either franchises. Not to mention there is the whole censorship issues from the Wii U which are even worse on the Switch version and really the game is a double edge sword. On one hand, combat is fun, it is not as stressful as say most other JRPGs that have massive timesinks, you do have some new side stories and with the Switch version not only do you have the ability to skip session animations and all of the DLC from the Wii U version but also the load times are greatly shorter then the Wii U version. But on the other hand, you still have people who were hoping for an actual crossover with SMT and FE instead of basically Persona, just with some FE characters thrown in, story, depending on who you talk to, is not as engaging as those games and is unchanged from the Wii U version and the cast is hit or miss definitely. I mean, I may get it at some point especially since my friend can confirm that the gameplay is at least worth it along with the faster load times, so awesome review regardless! Oh and saying Tokyo Mirage Sessions is STILL a mouth full.
Yes it is! It’s a miracle I pronounced it as well as I did hahaha
I really enjoyed the game on wii u but the load times and unable to speed up session eventually made me drop the game bit when it got released on switch that basically fixes all the issue i had and i fell in love with it
The Session abbreviations cut down on time so much!
Would be better if they made it persona x fire emblem cause they both focus on romance and battles while smt is only battles and is darker!
This game is special to me! I had played it on the WiiU but never had time to properly get into it.
Keep in mind that hadn't finished an RPG in years, until Encore came along - Now I'm waiting for the uncensor patch to drop and play New Game Plus. For me, Encore would be a 10/10 if Barry didn't exist. Sounds harsh, but you'll get exactly what I mean when you do his Side Story.
I remember being so pissed at the reveal, but then Kowashitai grew on me and I started to unironically like the trailers, the characters. So I caved in, bought it despite the censorship, and now is on my top 3.
Could it be improved? absolutely. Hopefully it gets a sequel.
Is there really an uncensored patch coming?
@@BacklogBattle Yeah but they've hit a wall. Give them time.
@@YabaiModding THIS IS THE BEST NEWS I'VE HEARD ALL YEAR!!!! And that's including Shantae and the Seven Sirens getting announced to release in just 48 hours, on my birthday, and Xenoblade DE coming out the day after!
@@YabaiModding Do you have a source for this? I can't find anything on it
@@Chronoflation I'm part of the Discord where they're doing work, but they're stuck with no date as to when could they possibly make a breakthrough. Imo just play the decensored WiiU version or Encore as-is.
Epic review but Sooo wondering where Shin Megami Tensei V is...
Hope we’ll hear about it soon!
@@BacklogBattle altho Tokyo Mirage isn't my tea ... Man such good sales lately on Switch and PS4 .... My wallet is crying but I'm standing a bit firm (gotta give in to Doom 3 for the switch) . Waiting for Golden week in April
Ok so who's your waifu/husbando in this game? You didn't answer that. 😛
Jk good review. Still need to finish this game.
Good luck with your playthrough! What do you think of it so far?
@@BacklogBattle I'm enjoying it. Like you I never had a Wii U and this was the main thing I wanted ported over.
Playing this one on pc work very well 60fps (GTX 1650) xD.
I wish the Switch had those specs lol
Amazing review and amazing game. Two amazing and epic things. (. ❛ ᴗ ❛.)
Thank you so much! 😍
Man I really want that game
It’s pretty good!
Do we get to date the girls? Then it would be a truly Persona and Fire Emblem crossover
Haha nope. I guess there's technically social links, but no dating. Makes a lot of sense though - idols in Japan cannot date other people while working as an idol.
@@BacklogBattle Damn that sucks, with so many pretty anime people one would think one gets to date them
No unfortunately
