”Haiti’s farmers and government have not given in. They defend their right to exploit their own natural resources, and well they're right. After all, the canal they're building has its origins in the 2 and a half km of river on Haitian soil” Actually, the situation is more complex. The river predominantly flows through the Dominican Republic, entering Haiti for only two kilometers before returning to the Dominican Republic. Thus, it represents a shared natural resource, not solely belonging to Haiti. The existing treaty between the two countries mandates joint negotiation for its usage in the border area, highlighting the need for collaborative management rather than unilateral actions. “What’s more, it's logical that they would seek the construction of this canal with food insecurity affecting at least five of its 11 and a half million citizens. It's estimated that the canal would increase rice cultivation in such a way as to ensure food for at least 4 million Haitians.” The effectiveness of the canal is unclear. The authorities responsible for the canal's construction have not disclosed any plans or studies, which is a requirement under the border treaty. The core of the controversy lies here. The Dominican government's opposition stems from concerns that this project is not merely an irrigation endeavor but an attempt to divert the river entirely into Haiti, potentially drying up downstream areas. Such an action would directly contravene the stipulations of the bilateral treaty “This position is also shared by the former president and candidate of the Dominican opposition for the May 2024 elections, Leonel Fernandez. He relied on a study by the National Institute of Water Resources of the Dominican Republic to support the Haitian project and called the Dominican government's position exaggerated and hypocritical, especially considering that the Dominican Republic has 11 canals similar to the one Haiti is building.” Leonel Fernandez's critique appears to be politically motivated, given his candidacy in the upcoming presidential election. His arguments, while noting the Dominican Republic's use of similar canals, miss a crucial point. The border treaty permits internal usage of the river within each country's borders. The Dominican Republic's canals, designed for irrigation, do not significantly alter the river's flow (it is beyond dispute that the river is currently flowing, right?). In contrast, Haiti's project seems to be more than just an irrigation canal, as evidenced by their reluctance to share project details with the Dominican Republic, raising questions about the project's true nature and compliance with the treaty
Question. When the DR created those 11 canals, did it inform Haiti on EVERY canal that was made? It's looking like a one-sided argument, and Haiti isn't supposed to have anything at all to help itself. Sadly, the State in Haiti is against the Haitian people as well as the West itself. Why talk to the DR when it routinely discriminates, even law-abiding Haitians with proper papers. Tell me if I am lying?
@@MrJohnnyBlaiseMost of those are not canals but water intakes, meaning they're smaller and don't divert too much water from the river, but regardless of that you can build canals or intakes in the river, but not the area that serves as borderline between two countries. For example the Artibonito river is also a borderline river, yet the Peligre Dam in Haiti doesn't violate the treaty because the dam is far from the border.
@LD33004 You do know that the canal is not even completely finished? So how are you even finished? And those intakes, when did your country informed Haiti
@@MrJohnnyBlaise I know it's not finished yet. As for the other intakes, if they're far from the borderline it can be done unilaterally by each country, that's why I mention the Peligre Dam, there was no problem with it's construction because it's far from the borderline. The only canal on this side that's questionable because it's too close to the borderline is the Vigía Canal that was built around 2008, but the construction was halted and was never connected to the river.
The river originates in the DR not Haiti . Only 5-7 km run through Haiti and 95% of the river runs through DR. Haiti has dried up all its rivers and DR is only asking for Haiti to provide technical analysis and topography studies to make sure the canal will be done properly and not cause flooding when the heavy rainy season comes. Countries are like people: there is only so much you can blame your shitty parents for ruining your life. If, when an adult, you don’t begin to put your act together, no amount of external help will help you and worse, you begin to think that there will be always someone else who is coming to the rescue from the shit you do. Another problem is the notion of sovereignty: The same people who pull their hairs off claiming that each nation have to be independent and do whatever they want inside their borders (with whatever delusional ideology they happen to embrace), as a sovereign principle, is the same people who pulls their hairs off demanding that other nations (whoever, they will always find who to blame) help and bear the responsibility of such nations repeated bad decisions (then yes, they agree on Humanism and Human Rights as the ruling principle among nations). Best thing for Haiti would be for other countries to allow Haitian women between 15 and 21 to immigrate in alone. Great opportunity for the women, leave the men behind, reduce their over-population.
It should be built... Maybe even separate totally by digging a canal ...Dominican Republic has been making huge strides in growing it's economy while Haiti's has collapsed with ongoing internal strife...😢

The title The DR wants to separate from Haiti. First of all, it s two totally independece counries. 2nd, The title should ve be. The DR wants safety for their people.
I took a Royal Carribean cruise to the DR last December and really enjoyed the country. Alot of new construction giving the impression their economy is growing and doing well. Our tour Dominican tour guide was funny as heck and extremely optimistic about the direction of the country, very proud of it. He asked that we advertise DR as a tourist destination because 80% of their economy is now tourism and they want it to keep growing. Me and my friend will definitely be back on another cruise to see more of it. We were also supposed to port in Labadee Haiti but a huge storm swept in right after the ship docked so the captain recalled everyone back to the ship. Me and my friend were just heading to the gangway and never got the chance to step foot into Haiti. I was told that cruise cancellations such as ours is not good for the locals since they have markets there and only 1-2 ships come per week now. We sailed to DR literally the next day and the weather cleared up and was beautiful. Haiti just cannot get a break from the bad stuff.
Why do you lie about the canal. The Haitians are wrong to try to build it. They are diverting water from reaching Dominicans and their farms. This river is governed by a treaty. And most importantly the actions by the Haitians will DRY UP the river this depriving BOTH sides of water. Given the Haitians’ poor farming practices (which resulted in them having no trees and no agriculture) they are not the best at making such decisions.
I am Haitian and I am fully in favor of a wall between the two countries. The problem is that DR does not want a full rupture. It wants to keep selling to Haiti for economic reasons. I think a full rupture, with a sealed border, no traffic of goods or people will be best for Haiti.
I'm dominican and agree with you. Hopefully Haïti should work on their stability and improve their own local production, and the DR should improve quality and expand to other markets, then at that point, see equitable trade between both sides
If they do that now, Haiti will literally starve to death. What Haiti needs is security and stability. Then, education. That'd take decades to accomplish.
The Dominican Republic is a poor country with its own problems, the last thing it needs is Haiti's problems to become theirs.
Their problems are each other problem. They share one island. When one half sneeze the other side eventually gets sick.

”Haiti’s farmers and government have not given in. They defend their right to exploit their own natural resources, and well they're right. After all, the canal they're building has its origins in the 2 and a half km of river on Haitian soil”
Actually, the situation is more complex.
It's estimated that the canal would increase rice cultivation in such a way as to ensure food for at least 4 million Haitians.”
The effectiveness of the canal is unclear. Such an action would directly contravene the stipulations of the bilateral treaty
“This position is also shared by the former president and candidate of the Dominican opposition for the May 2024 elections, Leonel Fernandez. He relied on a study by the National Institute of Water Resources of the Dominican Republic to support the Haitian project and called the Dominican government's position exaggerated and hypocritical, especially considering that the Dominican Republic has 11 canals similar to the one Haiti is building.”
Leonel Fernandez's critique appears to be politically motivated, given his candidacy in the upcoming presidential election.
I was about to clarify some of these points, but you did it better and clearer than I would do it, well done.
The horrible difference is that while people eventually die, countries keep dragging along, bringing themselves down with whatever surroundings they have.
Haitians but NOT because he was racist but because he saw a MAJOR trend for years of the Haitians SETTLING land and obtaining properties without becoming legal immigrants in the Dominican Republic. He saw how they were quietly penetrating and crossing the border and dared to fill land spaces in a semi-stealthy manner. The provinces of Dajabon, Santiago Rodriguez, Montecristi, Barahona, Azua, and San Cristobal, this is to name a few. Years prior to Trujillo having committed genocide against the Haitians he had given 30% of the Dominican land to Haiti so they wouldn't have any excuse to crossover and settle in lands of our country. Trujillo ordered the genocide in a three-part speech in Dajabon in the year 1937. Haiti is a Spanish speaking country??? Wtf
I went to DR during the Pandemic for a short project. What a nice country (once I got out of the tourist areas : )
Unfortunately, with the rise of the Internet, the ability of criminal gangs to grow has accelerated. Most of these gangs are drug related. These countries are not equipped to deal with the gangs. The gangs are very organized with sophisticated training. Look at what is happening in Ecuador. Wow.
You forgot to mention the Dominican Republic Gangs are the ones who's SMUGGLING the guns and drugs through the borders and adding fuel to Haitis gang problems.✒️
Dominican Republic is a nice country. However, outside of tourist areas, the real, daily living of the country is extremely corrupt. The government pays people to sit at home by providing them monthly monetary allowances( botella, nominilla) through the national government bank. Have anybody seen the long lines at the end and beginning of every month? Large sections of the dominican population(young and old) will make long, but long lines at every national government banks atms to withdraw their free keep quiet monetary allowance. The dominican population will keep quiet and have become numb about illegal prostitution, increasing violent and drug related crimes, and drugs and weapons distribution, as long as they provide the population to keep quiet and not be motive to have a sustainable daily work.Chinese are quietly taking over both countries(Hispaniola) by investing in rural sustainable export fields.Chinese people keep to themselves, and work together quietly while stacking up rural fields/farms large areas.Have to live there to know the real life.

The Haitians arent building a canal, they are deviating the course of the river completely into Haitian territory. This is going to leave thousands of Dominicans without access to the river and it's going to cause serious environmental damage in what was downstream.

Dominicans defeated Haiti every time they tried to invade. So nope the island doesnt "belong" to Haiti in any way you try to look at it.
In his book “Trujillo and Haiti”, historian Bernardo Vega refers to the fact that, over time, there has been an inaccuracy in the number of victims of “the parsley massacre.”
However, he supports his own analysis in relation to the figure in the population censuses carried out before and after the event as well as the reports of the North American officials who were at the customs posts on the Dominican border on that date. Haitian.
The last population census before the massacre, carried out in 1936, indicated, according to Vega, that the number of Haitians residing in the country amounted to 8,492. “This allows us to reach the conclusion that the dead fluctuated between 4,000 and 6,000,” he dictated in his work.

The failure of Haiti sliding back into tribes/gangs, can't be overstated. You can't govern 11+ million people without a main authority. Haiti is also doomed by its denuded lands, water problems, failing economy, and lack of any real allies, to help. You had a couple of facts wrong . First , the weapons trafficking goes directly to Haiti . Gangs control the ports , why would they need to go through the DR ??
Second , the river that haitians are trying to deviate , doesn't start in Haiti , it's born in the DR , a town called , Loma de Cabrera , Dajabon province , crosses to Haiti for 2km , and them goes back to the DR for more than 11km . So no , haitians are not rightfully deviating what's theirs .
And last , the 11 canals that the DR have , are not to deviate the course of the river , but for irrigation purposes . And half of those canals , are irrigating farms on the haitian side of the border .
Also , there are international conventions , forbidding the deviation of rivers and lakes . So they are not only breaking Haiti/DR agreements , but also international conventions on natural ressources !!

Very true. But there is a globalist/socialist movement that is trying to assert that there should be NO border and that must be fought and never allowed to come to pass.
The solution to the problem in Haiti is not for everyone to move to the Dominican Republic. Without documents in their own country, they will always be illegal migrants in any country in the world.
If the idea of these videos is to help Haitians in some way. Help they need desperately to rebuild their country. (Help them in their own country, help them with Haitian passports so they can migrate normally not illegally )

When videos are not objective. You only open the door for greater divisions between both countries who, although they have huge differences (Cultural, Political, Economic, Sociological and above all Historical), currently live in peace as two sovereign countries, each on their side of the island. And each one with its own challenges to solve.
The solution is not, and never will, to move an entire population, millions of john doe and jane does, without official Haitian documents, to live illegally in another country. This is crazy!
Migration, legal migration is a global phenomenon and should not be condemned. If it follows the legal procedures established by each receiving country migrants would be legal.
Let’s promote legalization at origin first. Minimally identification papers and/or a passport. Otherwise, you are inviting them to live illegally, to work as illegals, to live subject to deportation.
To promote that receiving countries break their own sovereign laws and accept millions of undocumented immigrants who cross the border illegally is an international absurdity.
What these videos want to promote? Promote illegality, disorder, human trafficking, inequality?
Each country has its sovereign rules on migration and especially on naturalization.
And in the Dominican Republic, like many countries, nationality is not acquired by the simple fact of being born on Dominican soil. Nor for living illegally for many years.
Illegality never generates rights. Illegality does not expire over time.
If you want to help them, don't sell them dreams of illegality.

You failed to mention exactly how Haiti "gained it's independence" in 1804. Haiti is a failed and lawless state because it is the result of a successful slave rebellion that forced colonialists to flee, they returned to attempt to retake the colony but were never given enough arms and men to do it. There was some especially gruesome acts carried out during the rebellion itself and the men who carried out these acts formed the culture we see today and it's objectively terrible.

DR burrowed the Capital for those building projects. That does not mean the economy is booming. Faux economic boom..
WHEN THEY ASSERT YOU THAT THEY ARE 2 HISPANIC COUNTRIES, WHEN HAITI 🇭🇹 IS FRANCOPHONE, THE INFORMATION IS NOT RELIABLE.
