    🐶 WOOF WOOF! This video was only possible thanks to our amazing sponsor: OrganicPricedBooks!
    .
    May be a bit different than what I normally do, but I didn't just want to do a standard unboxing/promotion, I wanted to answer a question I often get asked about buying your comics from America!
    .
    Hope you all enjoy it! I've taken a bit of a social media break to get my head right, but I'm still working on the content! If you like this, give it a thumbs up, subscribe if you're new, and share where you can! Should have a Where To Start out next, but until then, stay Mad Doggs! WOOF WOOF! 🐶

    Would be amazing if OPB did come across to the UK and provided some real competition with competitive pricing in the UK, it is just too expensive right now being a UK collector. Paying £77 upwards per omnibus as standard is a lot of money, hopefully they'd be able to offer they same level of service and similar pricing over here! Great vid.

    Hmm, wasn't feeling that video Markus. Don't get me wrong, I'm very happy for your sponsor and taking your channel to the next step but I think this was kinda weird and still missing some points. I would've liked if you could at least show the shipping cost. For the same books at 210$, shipping would've cost 111$, putting it at a total of 321$ . I was playing around a bit and three 125$ cover price books plus shipping would've cost me 344$, ordering at my LCS would cost the same. Same books at IST plus shipping 266$. And that is excluding Import +Tax + Handling Fees from the carrier.
    Packaging and delivery is a weird thing, I've never heard of anyone sending a book back to amazon 3-4 times (Not saying people didn't had to do that, just saying I've never heard of it.). I've ordered for years from Amazon and when a book was slightly damaged you either get a huge discount or a replacement immediately.
    And what IF a book is damaged or just needs to be replaced? How are replacements handled? Would be interesting to know cause that is one of my main regards ordering from the US. One thing that OPB seems to be good at is stock, service(which is very rare these days) and JP seems like a nice guy. I know that they can't do anything regarding the shipping cost but sadly for me at least, the only place ordering from in the US seems to be IST. If he does open a shop in the EU/UK though, I'm probably gonna be customer! This wasn't a hate comment, I appreciate the info, just thought I give my two cents. Very happy to see your channel growth 📈 especially as a day one viewer

      I know you've been here from day one Johnny, and I've always valued your feedback. I think with this one, I just missed the mark (evident in multiple feeling the need to spam me on my personal Facebook and Instagram).
      Legit, I just wanted to try and do something different. I didn't want to just do a standard 'Hey, look what I got from my sponsor', I'd feel like I'm just bragging about my success, rather than giving anything of value, so I tried this idea. I get that not everything is gonna' stick the landing, but I'll learn for next time and maybe just play it a bit safe. But I appreciate your comment mate, hopefully future videos will be a bit more up your street.

    Another thing to consider is duties and taxes. Each country has there exception limit and when you order the books from the us taxes are t charged and your rolling the dice with on if they will let it by. In Canada fedex charges $10 for acting as my broker in the Uk I’m guess it will be £5-8. In Canada there are sources to get books cheaper than importing from the us but for OOP books organic priced books and IST are the way to go. After shipping and duties you will get the books for about 20% off which is good for an OOP book.

    While the cost of books is cheaper due to the dollar to pound conversion, cost of shipping is definitely something that shouldn't be shrugged off since OPB's cost of shipping does increase with the number of books you buy opposed to FP's flat rate fee of £5.50.
    Take your example of the two Star Wars omnibus, $135 + its $66.88 for shipping to the UK making its $201.88 or £146.45 total cost vs FP total cost including shipping of £135.23 and if I order more books from FP the cost of shipping doesn't increase. So as it stands Booksetc and Speedyhen still reign in terms of cost and shipping. I personally won't be using the service but if in the future JP can open a warehouse in the UK or reduce shipping costs in the interim, I will consider it as I do like the look of his website and his communication on the facebook groups is really good and the fact he carries extra stock.
    However I can't speak for other European countries but looking at FP's shipping to the EU it might be worth using OPB and might be marginally cheaper. Great video otherwise Marcus!

  • @andeh37
    @andeh37 3 года назад +6

    Is it me or did you go through the whole 'postage' section without mentioning the actual cost of the postage to the UK?
    In my experience each imported package can pick up a customs handling fee, even though there is no import tax payable.
    Does OPB put the appropriate commodity codes etc on the outside of the box?

    • @matthewsmithson4250
      @matthewsmithson4250 3 года назад +2

      Yeah, postage costs were left out from the US. For me to get 1 book delivered to the UK it was $57. Two books was then $79, with three books taking it over $100.
      Definitely not saving money to add more books. I’d rather stick with Amazon Prime and use that postage money to get another book or two! Plus I’ve not had any issues with their shipping yet.
      However for some rare books I think it could be easier to get them from the states. There shouldn’t be customs charges as books are exempt, but that’s relying on the company to do all the correct documentation.

    • @MaddoggComics

      I just wanted to try and do something different with a sponsored video. I didn't just want it to be a standard 'Look what I got given', but sometimes you try things that just don't work, such as this one. At the end of the day, people can spend their money the way they want to, and I respect where ever they choose to buy from. I'm just a dude making RUclips videos in his spare room. I wouldn't listen to me.

    • @andeh37
      @andeh37 3 года назад

      @@MaddoggComics There's really nothing wrong with being sponsored, or about talking well about a company with which you have a personal relationship.
      I think problems arise when you present the video as an in depth overview, and then leave out crucial information - like how much it costs, because as soon as you do, it will seem like you are not being genuine with you audience.
      You could have concluded with something like;
      Do you live in america? Use OPB
      Are you a UK collector happy to pay a premium for availability guarantees and amazing packaging? Use OPB
      Do you live somewhere it is difficult to get access to these books? Use OPB
      Have you been let down too many times by pre-orders that aren't fulfilled? Consider using OPB
      Are you trying to maximise your money for books and on a budget? OPB is probably not for you.
      I just wanted to say - the video was entertaining and I think everyone appreciates you were trying something new. Don't let the comments section dent your enthusiasm.

  • @matthewsmithson4250
    @matthewsmithson4250 3 года назад +4

    Unfortunately postage to the UK will still be very high. The price goes up per book added rather than it being a one postage costs covers all. Overseas can be great for getting some of the rare books.
    For me, I’ve had no issue with getting books through Amazon. Having Prime also makes this a no brainier. I can always complain and get a discount/replacement as other comments have said. If I don’t use Amazon I do like Reed Comics.
    Shame about the postage costs from Organic as their site and selection of books is great. It was just a shame to get to the checkout and see the very high postage.
    Looking forward to your next video though, woof woof!

      I respect that, and I get that it won't be a good option for everyone. Getting the books you want is the main thing. I just wanted to do something different with a sponsored video, but honestly this was more hassle than it was worth and I'll just stay away from giving any kind of advice in future. It's all a learning curve to me, I'm not even one year deep yet, there's still this trial and error phase I can't seem to get right. Hope the future videos are a bit better mate. Hey Maddogg, thanks for the video and congrats for the channel. The problem is not shipping but the CUSTOMS FEES that you are facing if you buy overseas. maybe UK has a special agreement with USA, but I am based in Spain, and the situation is such in here. If you buy something from OPB, TFAW or Cheap Graphic Novels which are USA based companies, a single Omnibus could cost you at the end of the game about 70 % more of the initial price (shipping + Customs fees + Spanish VAT + internal shipping from DHL/UPS if you are also unlucky). I really would like to support small companies, but Amazon / Ebay are unbeatable. As an example, I just bought yesterday a new copy of The Exmachina Omnibus for 66 Euros from a third party UK seller in Amazon.com. These big companies have also agreements with local customs so you pay the whole sum when you actually buy the book, and it is delivered to your door without an extra cost. I confess that sometimes have asked some small companies to put a symbolic price for the value of the book to avoid customs fees... some of them say yes but most cases they say no. After Brexit, buying in the UK has become similarly difficult. I recently have found Archonia.com (based in Belgium) as an option for European customers (customs free!), so this could be the way to go... If anybody has any other suggestions, please share them !!. Cheers and good reading !!

    For the longest time i was buying from Amazon, but for the past year/year and a half its 90% Forbidden Planet from UK.. i live in Ireland. Two months ago i decided to do preorder on 34 omnis from FB. Just for fun i checked how much the same preorder would cost me on Amazon... difference was shocking.. 700 pounds less compare to Amazon. Also i feel like my preorders have better chance of actually being delivered to me - Amazon failed me on many occasions with preorders. prices on Organic Price Books looks really tempting , and i agree, if you can wait for your order and you order in bulk then its a really good option. There is one thing tho: how much would the shipment have been for you in the example you used? You save a nice amount of money on the books, but would you still save money when adding the shipment? Just wondering.
    If you would not save lots of money or you would even loose money after adding the shipment costs, I would maybe still order from them. Cause maybe they might still have books I can't find as easy in other places.
    They seem a viable option, but it still depends on how much the shipping costs would be. I don't want to take that much of a loss either, lol.

    You have to order a lot of books to make shipping to the UK worst the price; perhaps 4 or 5 in one go. Unless you're doing that, it is far more expensive than Forbidden Planet or Amazon. Not good value for money.

Except for the odd time when they don't fulfill the preorder most of the time I'm getting all the books I want without a problem (and only 4% customs for books in Spain).
