This is a great example of why your channel is one of the most valuable channels on RUclips today. You constantly teach people by your example that you don't have to have the latest and greatest to have a great farming operation. Instead of building a new building, you make use of what you have. Whether it's your chicken trailer, your feed and water dishes from cut off barrels or that scrap lumber which can be used for everything, you show people how they can save money while providing themselves with the infrastructure they need. There's a long way and a lot of money between what's pretty and what works.
Pete I love your channel for your humbleness and intelligence. You aren’t buying new expensive tractors, building new “Dream shop’s” and you make an emphasis on farming as a business. You are very relatable compared to other channels. Thanks for keeping your originality on your channel.
@@JustaFewAcresFarm As you have varied your posting times and days a bit I've tended to miss you posting within the last half hour and more subscribers means more comments. Two years ago I found your videos and started raising pigs. We now farrow 5 sows and just invested in a new farrowing pen setup (6 stalls with covered shelters, 3 pens and a "paddock" area for humans to move around in).
@vadanadav I spent about 4k for new 2 5/8 pipe, 1k for new tin, 1.5k for panels and about 3k on labor. I have a skid steer with post driver, mobile welder and all the tools needed already. About 10k total investment overall.

So this is an excellent video to show potential new small farmers how to develop a good business plan and thinking about how they are going to make a profit.

Pete, Thank you very much for providing the detailed information about starting a Feeder Pig operation. It is AMAZING videos like this that make me watch your channel ever chance I get. For my farm journey; it was the best video you have done!!!!!! Thanks again.
I been thinking this as well! Use what you have is my way. Here is another 💡 . Modify ny turning your cattle feeding fences to go length wise an leave room for the bales to be under the roof. Moving the water back of course. then you open up the entire side for the pig area. Should be just as easy to feed an clean out. move the cattle outside as usual.
That is an interesting idea Rhonda. Thanks. I worry the hay would not be sufficiently protected from the weather. But it got me thinking; we are only utilizing about half of each side for feeding. If I cleared the junk out of the bay adjacent to the winter pigs and utilized the whole length of it for feeding, then I could eliminate feeding on the side where we want the farrowing pens to go, and the hay would stay well protected from the weather.
I see a lot of similarities in the ways you think and run your farm with the way my Grandad did his. He never got filthy rich but he was always the happiest guy around. The respect and the care you give the animals really comes through in your videos as well.
Excellent case study interview question for a macro consulting firm. Out of the box thinking is always rewarded. Calculating the utilization rate in regards to space vs. amount of work will maximize profits while help plan for the future. Managing expectations and efficiency are the keys to business big or small.
That's good/sound planning there. These are not stable times we have. Keeping costs down for growth is your friend. You can always build another structure later if you still need it if you see solid growth/profit margin. God will bless your efforts with your "good for the animals" methods for caring for them too. Thanks for another video Pete. Always a pleasure.
Pete, thanks for 'walking' us through your thought process on changing your pig raising operation. Your common sense analysis of the big picture will provide a good outcome for you and Hillary. It will be interesting to follow along as you proceed to make the necessary changes to housing and raising pigs in a profitable manner.
JayJay is just such a character. He acts like he's happy all the time. He and Bossy Pig make a cute couple actually. Billy is certainly coming along. I do hope you keep JayJay and Bossy Pig for a while...I really can't wait to see their piglets.
On my grandfather’s farm from the horse days to when I came along in the 50’s we raised a lot of you do. By the mid 60’s the pigs were the first to go. I suspect it was cost related. He expanded beef feeders and reduced the milking herd. The chickens and turkeys continued as source of income. He did direct sales also.

What a wise idea! Feel the waters before building the boat. Right on!

Good luck, Pete! we're excited to see how it comes together for you. Have a great day.
Hey Pete.
Agree this is one of your best videos.
Love hearing the thought process and seeing the alignment of beliefs and action.
Keep up the good work.
Always enjoy your ability to talk through advice.
