9 years later and This channel is still my go to for great tool drum covers
Archaeology is my profession, and drums are my hobby, even though I've been a drummer longer than an archaeologist. I teach courses in archaeology at UC-Denver and work on various project.
The final drums of the grudge is the best end of the world
I don't even play the drums or any other instrument, but it is still so fascinating watching people playing tool :D
Are you kidding me? A self taught drummer John???!!!!! What an incredibly talented drummer you are!!! Your channel needs to blow up!!!!!!!
I have probably watched a combination of your videos more than all other videos on youtube combined
Tyler Davis Hey Tyler...thanks for watching, and for the feedback!
+Tyler Davis haha, me too!!! :D
Oh yeah yeah
WOW!! I'm so glad I cae across your channel. I'm a HUGE TOOL fan , as well as a drummer, and I'm so glad I found another drummer with as much passion for the techniques Danny Carey uses in all of the TOOL songs. Thank for all of your hard work and efforts in sharing your same passion with all of us. Keep the videos coming!!!
So much talent, so much passion and so humble. The world needs more people like John!!!
Thanks for sharing your talent with us!
Dude. You’re a master at your crafts. The playing and the recording sound!! Amazing. Also you sound humble and genuine. I am more of a fan of people who play by ear. There are several covers of people who clearly got the tabs or written music and learned every stroke with every nuance and it sounds machine like. This is 10,000 times better in my eyes and ears. Love it!! Also, how do you use the Roland pads? Are they plugged into your computer through the module and using VST sounds or whatever? Or is it just the sounds from the module? Did you have trouble with false triggering from hitting your acoustic snare and bass drum?? Also that ride sounds so incredible!!! Love your playing dude!!
Thanks man, much appreciated! The Grudge is such a good song, and it took me so long to really appreciate it. I wasn't until the past year or so that I really started giving it the attention it deserved.
I've been watching your Tool cover videos for a long time. The fact that you're self-taught blows my mind. I would love the chance to work with you, but either way, I'm gonna keep watching.
"30 seconds of drum madness" :)
nicest guy on youtube.
Maybe once you learn so many Carey patterns you reach enlightenment.
Easily the best cover performer of Carey on RUclips, believe me I've looked. Lateralus my actual favourite, the tricks near the end are great for the viewer, but I feel for you testimony to your skill and how much you are enjoying your work. Great stuff. Writing this on Chistmas day so Merry Christmas to you and yours.
I love drum covers and yours especially! Tool is amazing and I love looking at the layers separately so I can hear exactly what I think I'm listening to
True inspiration
Dude these making of / breakdown videos are priceless! Thanks fir taking the time and I hope we see more and more :)
Incredible video! Thank you amigo!!
You have dissected Carey's amazing work like a skilled surgeon. Analyzed it like a gas chromatograph and put it out for the world to witness that, yes, with hours of hard work, it is possible. Thank you so much for your time and effort!
Talk about refined primal release! You, sir, have inspired me to put down my guitars for some time now...and bang away on a recently purchased kit. I've learned so much from your videos (including how to assemble what arrived in several boxes on a pallet) and will continue to learn. I commend your incredible talent, and thank you for sharing your knowledge and skill. Oh the passion! Be well.
Nice! Great vid! Cheers! You’re right about the note value terminology, but remember they switch between straight and swung (triplet)!
Thanks man, that's great to hear, and I appreciate you taking the time to leave this feedback.
Ive been following you fo some time, and have been puzzled by this song for a lot longer. Incredible job. I thank you infinitely for not only providing commentary and explaining some of the dynamics, but taking the time to learn it and show everyone on youtube. This song has aggravated me for so long but this helps sooo much. Awesome awesome job.
nothing but love for you dude, thank you
Hi ,Thanks for all your videos especially the tool uploads
You are the best I've seen so far for playing and helping other drummers to understand with multiple camera angles.
Looking forward to seeing more in the future, take care of yourself.
Awesome John, thanks for your insights in these just gives so much more depth and perspective to listening what's going on in the songs!
Thanks for your insight, and genuine joy for drumming. Doing -TOOL- covers is just a bonus!!!
Thank you for doing what you do. Great vid, man.
You're an inspiration, John!
I learned so much from just this video, it was really a pleasure. I can see how much you love doing this, and it is fascinating hearing your processes. I hope Danny Carey sees this, I am sure he would love it. Very excited for your new location and more videos! :D
Excellent suggestions - I get so many good ideas for covers from like-minded people such as yourself. I'll definitely explore these for the next series - thanks!
Really awesome of you to do this man, its really nice to have some of these more technical parts broken down.
Very insightful, thanks for sharing!
That is great to hear - it makes it worthwhile to make these commentary videos.
Thanks my friend, I'm so glad this is helpful to you. Sometimes it's hard to gauge whether or not these commentary videos are of any use, so I'm glad to hear it.
Hey man, love your drums only videos! I play bass along to them, and it really helps my timing and memorization of the song structure. There is a drum cover of just about every tool song that exists on RUclips, except for 10000 days. And I'd love to see you do that, and would love even more to see you do that with a drums only! Just a request of you ever gat around to it! Thanx man, keep up the good work!
MIXTA-B MARVELOUS MIC yo, you should record playing bass over this for a guitar backing track :D
love your tool videos and love you too
much love from turkey keep going
I am currently teaching myself on the drums and aim to learn very difficult songs such as this. This is the only way to learn.
This video was very informative, thank you!
im not a drummer and im subscribing. you're extremely talented!
Thank you forr your interpretation respect your playing.......
Glad you like these videos, thanks!
Thank you sir - that's a good idea to upload the entire drums only track. I'll try to do that over the next few weeks in the interim.
Thanks for making this! I'd like to see a video on the making of the drum shed too!
love it
insightful sir, you are a gent
The way you can tell you nailed a tool cover is when it takes you 10,000 days and can hardly explain how or what your doing. So yea. You nailed this one
self taught? I love your technique man! I'm also teaching myself how to play the drums...and I like where it's going. I can only hope to find a band soon with me as the drummer. Right now I'm playing bass in a cover band and work in bars...but I want to make my drumming better since in my "project" I'm the one who does everything from playing to recording. Your videos make go and play the drums when I'm feeling I'm not going anywhere with it...so thanks!
great drumsound!
Just for an FYI if you're still wondering about the note value for the double bass-ride part. It's Quarters -> Eighths -> 8th Note Triplets-> 16th Notes -> 16th Note Triplets. But that's just me being picky haha you play this unbelievable well. I'm in the process of learning this right now and your cover has helped me out a lot so far.
"clinging on to a runaway freight train for dear life" hahahahaha perfectly stated!!
Good job! you do a big effort to re build this song.
dude, you are absolutely mental. love your tool cover vids, and ive taken so many pointers of you to help my own drumming. and I'm definately an amatuer drummer. keep it up and check out my grudge cover, if youve got the time, and obviously any pointers would be great. cheers.
Hi George - thanks for this great feedback, and I'm so glad to hear you're drumming is coming along. I'm glad my videos can be of some help!
You're the man...
I get heaps of enjoyment watching your drumming videos as i'm sure a heap of other folk also do, a real pleasure I tell you, damn awesome...quick question John, have you ever thought of doing Tool-Triad ?? you would kill that and hope you entertain that thought....waiting patiently for the vid. Keep up the awesome videos, and just tell your neighbour to move if he dont like the sounds and if he does i'll buy his house.......
Thanks my friend, your feedback always means a lot :-)
What I'd like to learn is how you used Logic to create that score and demarcated the different tempos. Thank you for such an extensive explanation/tutorial on this very extraordinary drumming.
Sup man! Love your videos, and your cover of The Grudge is is really great! I do think you made an error though about that double kick part (around the 3:20 mark in your video here). You said that Danny is playing quarter notes, followed by 8th notes, 16th notes, then 32nd notes (notice how you mention those four subdivision, but if you watch the video you can count that you're playing five different subdivision). Quarter notes are 1 note per quarter note, 8th notes being 2 notes per quarter note, 16th notes being 4 notes per quarter note, and 32nd notes are 8 notes per quarter note. Two subdivision that you didn't mention (which you are actually playing) are 8th note triplets (3 notes per quarter note), and 16th note triplets (6 notes per quarter note). So what I hear you playing in that part is, quarter notes, followed by 8th notes, followed by 8th note triplets, followed by 16th notes, then 16th note triplets. However!!! what Danny is actually playing is quarter notes, then 8th notes, 8th note triplets, 16th notes, and lastly 32nd notes (8 notes per quarter note). Have a look, let me know if you disagree.
p.s. you should cover Third Eyes or Reflection next, as they are the two greatest Tool songs ever written.
great job man, i really like the fact that you dissected the song rather than just play it.
Great job! i would love for you to make a tutorial for this song, but i understand that would be quite a task!
Excelent video jhon, i love your covers! btw how are the accents of the pattern that you explain in the video?
There are no 'paradiddles' in this song. It's a Swiss Army Triplet followed by a Flam Tap. It then reverses the sticking.
This is the actual sticking:
LR R L LR R RL L R RL L
Can't wait to see the new material. How's that shed coming along?
Self taught? Ur awesome!!!
Absolutely amazing drumming man. Amazing. Do you play with any bands? Just curious
Well done again, John. I can't help but thinking that it would be really cool that you had a kind of a "Danny Carey's review on my work" personal interview and you shared it afterwards. All the best!
Q
Thanks man...it would be great to sit down for a beer with Carey, although I'd be embarrassed for him to see my videos, ha. I'm just a hobbyist and he's a master.
Johnkewdrums Hey John! I think that he would actually like it a lot! ;)
When will we have the pleasure of a "The Pot" cover'
Cheerio!
Fuck yeah bro, Nice video. Ima share it on the book of faces.
Would you be willing to make a video on how you do your tuning at some point?
Love your videos man! What software do you use? Right now I use Garageband and imovie but I'm thinking about upgrading! Thanks
I would love to know more about your archaeology career. Are you an amateur or a professional? Keep up the good videos as always!
is this a good song to learn as a complete beginner? this song really inspires me to start learning drums. I play bass and guitar btw
This cover is absolutely masterful, but I think you played 24th notes on the kick instead of 32nd notes on the kick right?
I wish you were my drum teacher. I don't know if this matters, but I use Pearl demon drives double pedal, but I was wondering what your settings are? I'm trying to play double bass, but I don't feel comfortable.
I'm an archaeologist - I manage some projects and teach at UC-Denver.
Hey Eli, almost - the snare is only on for a short time in the middle of the song.
man, you are absolutely epic. im actually watching your vids to learn all these tool songs...
just a question man, how are you muting/softening the drums in the song in your covers??
just a question, what is you're full time job? i only ask, because im wondering how u afford all of your recording equipment.
is that a danny carey thing?
Was your snare off the whole song, John? it sounded so....
Mind if I ask how old you are, and for how long you've been drumming?
His 18 and has been drumming for 47 years
I can't imagine what kind of skills you'd have if you had education like Matt Gartska...
