I was able to learn this part, and this video helped me out 90%. Amazing lesson, very clear and concise explanations. You seem like a very intelligent guy and you’re obviously a killer drummer. Thanks so much for taking the time to put this together!
About as easy as drawing a circle, square, triangle and rhombus with both hands and feet at the same time. :) Well done Owen (and, obviously Danny). Great tutorial.
Thanks Owen, for taking the time to describe (in depth) the rudiments and the exercises that it took you to gain the muscle memory required for these rudiments. Subscribed!
Sick cover, great explanation! I'm on the Triad trail! A very fun way to practice the swiss triplets is putting on the new Tool album and practicing along to a couple songs. First Invincible, then Descending, and finally Pneuma. With the 7 feel, it keeps alternating the feeling of which 16th note and which hand is the lead. Anyways, great video, thanks for sharing!!
fantastic lesson. that stick pattern is ridiculous. I was approaching it as differently timed doubles (which isn't quite wrong, just a bad application). that L LR R was mind blowing lol. thanks!
Thank you! Yeah, it seems like a massive drum pattern when it's all put together, but it can clearly be broken down into simple components...sounds huge though and that's what matters!
I remember the first time I heard this song at the e-center in SLC, Utah - and afterward went up to Backbeats and bought a drumset for my birthday. The song blew me away. Thanks for creating this tutorial, I can't wait to start practicing :) on a side note, at 20:43 I laughed so hard - your expression doing the rudiments is awesome! ;D Thanks for the great vid!!
Thanks for watching, Adrian! I appreciate it. Glad to know you got a kick out of that part towards the end of the video, haha. Good luck with your practicing!
No such thing as a late comment on RUclips… this is epic bud - much appreciated - def took alot away from you helping to break down his sick anamatronics and helping us simpletons to at least get a little closer. Man! Danny Carey is a genius. You are on your way though as well. Just gotta find the right band to help unlock your skills I guess. Ps- absolutely love the ride accents and funky flip beats towards the end. That stuff is epic and you did a phenomenal job. Supreme cudos again!
Man i dint realise without your long hair that it was your cover i watched and liked months back :D and i even downloaded your video from youtube just because i wanted to learn how you were putting all the hand and leg works together .. just amazing man.. i am still learning this song and its very hard for me as my left double strokes are lagging a bit and it sounds like a flam when i play with the right ( L (LR) R ) ..
I have to write a damn c++ / assembly computer program in Chinese braille, just to begin to understand how to start this damn song on the right beat. lmao
great vid man. I'm only a beginner and doubt i will ever be good enough to play this but I really appreciate your work on this song. You're good at explaining shit and you can destroy this song.
Thank you for the kind words! Don't doubt yourself man; I'm a firm believer in consistency. If you're consistent with 60, 30, or even 15 minutes of practice each day, you'll see and feel improvement in your drumming. Honestly man, after watching guys like Travis Orbin and Alex Rüdinger drum (both live and on RUclips), I have rather strong doubts about my drumming more often than you might imagine. But there's really no good that comes from doubting yourself to the point where you've written yourself off, essentially. Just love drumming for what it is. You'll learn the patterns in this song.
Owen McKinley integralist44 Hey duds!! Owen, awesome tutorial! I'm a begginer at this of drumming too (got the swiss triplet working right!!) my goal is to learn this song, I know it's going to take me long but I'll get there, I play guitar, keyboards and bass, not that Im any music hero just a music lover, and the key is persistance and like Owen said "consistent with 60, 30, or even 15 minutes of practice each day" and you'll get there!! even more, if you tape yourself you'll be surprised by your own improvement, I usually do because I tend to forget riffs, fills and stuf when I'm jamming, and they get lost on the momentum. Good luck!!
thanks for the lesson, the part in triad i find really difficult is during the quiet section with the poly-rhythm on the bell of the ride as well as the snare and double bass
That is definitely the most challenging part of the song, coordination-wise. From my experience, simply listening to that section over and over again was the best way to learn and understand it.
This is an awesome video man. Im glad i managed to work out how to do this myself (mind you i cant perform it yet). He uses the swiss triplet in a lot of songs. I learned it in Rosetta stoned and then i heard it in Triad. im glad i managed to do this myself. awesome video though man.
DAMMIT I learned the pattern with inverted hands!! I always thought that "the shuffling hand" was the right! I think that your transcription makes more sense.I have to learn it once again backwards... by the way kudos man! And for another application of the swiss army triplets similar to this one watch (if you haven't) the Steve Smith's performance spotlight on vic firth channel!
Thanks for this video mate, wouldn't have had a clue without your guidance. Can't get my hands to line up over the section where the 5 kicks are happening. Does anyone know which hand does what over that part? Cheers
Great, well-explained lesson. I know I'm quite later, but doesn't it make more sense to think of the song in 6/8 rather than 4/4? I've always felt it in 6, but I'm not sure if I'm hearing it incorrectly.
Honestly, just think of it however you prefer. If 6/8 works for you, then that's perfect for you. I don't think that you're "hearing it incorrectly." The stuff I presented in this lesson is simply what worked for me.
You’ve probably learned a lot since 2014 but I wanna tell people that don’t know the 4/3 and 4/4 over each other that meet up every 3 measures is a basic polynomial it obviously doesn’t sound basic but like he said if you break it down and have good rythm then you could probably give learning this a go
Hey, so I have learned the first pattern part with the hands and the bass drum... but I just CAN'T get myself to put in the hi hat chick sound in.. do you have any tips? :)
My best advice would be to first practice the exercises that I begin demonstrating at 16:00. Then, maybe initially perform only the first of the three hi-hat chicks (they cycle in three's) in the pattern...followed by playing hi-hat chicks one and two...finally bring that third one in there, and begin trying to cycle that. That's my best advice, personally. Hope that helps!
That was what I had the most trouble with too. The thing is the rhythm has a very heavy triplet feel right up until the quarter note hi hat starts coming in, it transforms how the entire rhythm sounds as a whole. That being said, what helped me was just doing my left and right foot before I tried to incorporate my hands into it. The two legs working together have a very specific feel to it (i.e the feeling of both legs hitting simultaneously) and once you work that out, it starts to become a lot more natural feeling. At that point is when you could start trying to bring the hands into it, one hand at a time if need be.
I know how to play this song. I just can’t do it lol. When I finally get the pattern down, I can keep it up for more than 15 seconds before loading it.
If you’re left handed and have a left handed kit yes, but if you’re right handed then you won’t be able to play the song exactly correct. Anyway it’s good be able to play it both ways.
hey! I found the actually swiss rudiment is called a Swiss Tap Drag: www.ninjadrummist.com/drum-rudiments/hybrid-rudiments/swiss-tap-drag-300/ at least, that's what I gathered from your description.
That's ridiculous! I just tried opening them and they didn't display, as you're mentioning. I'll go through my old computer at some point to reload the images elsewhere
I'm just confused as to whether your getting the Swiss trips from the live version or is he doing the same thing in the album version. It's a fucking perfect tutorial but I can't help but imagine danny plays something else on the album.
That's an excellent question for which I have a decent answer. Danny utilizes Swiss triplets in the live version of this song. But in the studio version, I honestly believe that he's only playing L L with his left hand on the open snare throughout the entire first half of the song. I struggle to hear any tom work (oddly enough) in the studio version. Danny is known for really letting loose live; he always absolutely kills it on stage! As a result, I think he kinda "beefed up" Triad's drum parts when Tool used to perform this one (hopefully they'll play it again at some point in the future!). I enjoy both versions.
yeah i definately see the swiss triplets in the live one, i used to play that one multiple times a day for a couple months as a beginner just apin around (i was also infected by dannys awe inspiring drum hypnosis) and now that i know how it really goes im like pumping L LR R all throughout the day til i get back to my set, but my band is gonna play the studio version hopefully sometime soon so im just kinda stumped as to how that might be different. i thought it was R R where yo uwould play the L L on the snare and then he does that shot on the snare in couples of 3?
Brian Fahey If you wanted, you could play the repeating groupings of two snare hits with your right hand (to mimic the studio version), but for all theoretical purposes in relation to Danny's live sticking, you'd technically play L L on the snare. Check out the second of the three transcription documents that I made; the snare hits in the studio version fall where the L's are in that transcription document.
TheBackingTrack4You Haha, yep! You're correct; I started wrestling when I was thirteen years old and continued through my sophomore year of college. My right ear is especially cauliflowered, relatively speaking.
I just checked the images and they are available for me. I accessed them via my computer and my phone. I'm not sure why you're unable to see them. I might get around to re-uploading these transcriptions to a different site if the issue persists.
okay, but where is the viking that played the drum cover?
I spent years trying to isolate the Triad drumming. You did it so easily.
I was able to learn this part, and this video helped me out 90%. Amazing lesson, very clear and concise explanations. You seem like a very intelligent guy and you’re obviously a killer drummer. Thanks so much for taking the time to put this together!
Wow man, thanks for the great comment! Glad you found this tutorial useful. :-)
About as easy as drawing a circle, square, triangle and rhombus with both hands and feet at the same time. :) Well done Owen (and, obviously Danny). Great tutorial.
I know this comment is late, but thanks to you, I’ve been able to learn the Tom section of the song in a few weeks of practicing. You rock my man👊
Thanks Owen, for taking the time to describe (in depth) the rudiments and the exercises that it took you to gain the muscle memory required for these rudiments. Subscribed!
I just came here from that cover and I am flabbergasted as to why there is less than 3k likes. You absolutely killed that song.
This video is still relevant today. Thank you man!
Thank you for sharing all this intricate work with us and getting it documented ✨️
Thank you for the helpful breakdown to isolate the parts & limbs!!

Hate to say it, but: you tha GOAT for this video!

Definitely some great info in here. Nice work!
This fixed what I was doing wrong. Great break down!
Great to hear! Good luck with the song :-)
You seem like a really cool person. It's obvious you're a badass drummer
Thanks for existing. 👍

Loved the lesson. was really great!
