If you're a Drumeo Edge member, you know that Aaron Edgar loves to teach progressive rock and metal songs during his live lessons - including tunes from the band Tool. In today's lesson, Aaron Edgar will be breaking down a tribal tom groove from their song Ticks & Leeches, as well as the bridge section from their song Eulogy.
If you like what you see, we have even more Tool (and other progressive rock) song breakdowns in our Drumeo members area. Click here to get started with your 30-day free trial:

Don’t forget sacred geometry and the occult
you should do some more lessons on tool songs
Ikr
That would be awesome!
Yes, please teach a comple song like Schim
Javier Rueda Schism is actually pretty easy. They should do lateralus.
Rosetta Stoned for the balls to drop
But a lesson with danny carey? would be my dream...
one of the most original drummer which can make hard shit sounding cool and linear
That drum sound though.... just so sweet, so spot on. This guy is a great skilled and concise instructor.
TERRIBLE INFANT he missed a lot of beats.
That beat from Eulogy has haunted me for 23 years. I know exactly how to play it, I just CAN NOT PLAY IT!!! Thanks for making it look easy.
I bet if you tried it every day for 23 years you’d be able to do it by now
I’d say that’s everyone’s (drummers) fave besides ticks and leeches, it’s not only an insanely hard and technical beat, but has groove dripping from it
@@JuanKwas2001 even less than that 😂 probably like a couple days if you really try
Hi friend. That groove haunted me for 25 years. This video finally did it for me. Less than two weeks later, working on it every day, celebrating every little bit of progress, I’m pretty confidently striding through it now.
ruclips.net/video/JFQHMDitZVM/видео.html
You can do it man.
You're talking about the "You've claimed all this time that you would die for me" part?
These are definitely two of Danny's most iconic grooves. My favorite is the bass and drum breakdown from Rosetta Stoned. 3 over 5 all day!!
snarplaya one of the best drum rolls ever
Also my favourite! I love watching John Kew play it
I don't even play drums, and still like to know how this masterpice is played in detail.
Same here!
as a non drummer, this is crazy
+ProjectOneOfficial I'm not a drummer either. I just like coming to this channel to see drum tabs while seeing the beat played. Simply visually awesome.
As a drummer, its still crazy...
As a non drummer, I'm curious to how exhausting drumming like Danny would be...
If it’s crazy for a non drummer, imagine how we drummer feel LOL, Danny Carey is a drum god
@@EweCantHandletheTruth His drumming is extremely technical, with a lot of polyrythms and odd time signatures, so I very taxing mentally. Add to that, he is known to play pretty damn hard in terms of his hit strength. I can't imagine what it must be like to have to play at that level for an entire tour.
These SONOR drums are the fucking best!!!
TOOLS of the trade! I see what you did there!
Started learning ticks and leeches. That intro is so difficult if you’re just looking at the sheet music but having someone break down the accents really helps because if you do it without the accents it sounds like someone new to the drums has just hopped on and started hitting random drums
The first time I heard Danny play the Eulogy beat 23 years ago I was like WTF.
The first time I saw this madman play the Eulogy beat just a minute ago I was still like WTF!
What an awesomely creative beat. One of my all time favorites as well.
the eulogy beat is just ridiculously hard to me
Somedays back i read an article in a drum magazine were DC says "I play 16th notes on the hi-hat and open it every third note." Maybe i´m mistaken but it looks like it in this video "TOOL Eulogy LIVE New Jersey 1997" here on YT. But i try to learn it the Edgar way too, because it´s hard and pushs me!
@@rockdahaus Yeah he's making it harder than it has to be in this lesson
You ain't effing kidding! 5 years ive been trying this...FIVE!!! Like i said in my original comment, everything is all fun and games until I try the BD syncopation. Definitely pushes against every fabric of one's sense of timing.
Grr I thought it was a lesson featuring him! the sound of the toms is identical to the track tough good job :D
The high-hat introduction makes the groove extremely tricky. Perfect example of an incredible balance between creativity and complexity.
Ok, this is exactly why (Good) drummers are far more talented than most musicians, especially guitarists. And, why I gave up on drums almost immediately and picked up the guitar. I could never play this stuff. haha. I just came here to figure out what the hell Careys doing so I can program some cool drum beats. My hats off to all drummers. You guys are aliens. :)
guitar has just as much potential for mind blowing complexity and originality, but it's very rare to see guitarists explore those possibilities. If you really dedicate yourself to the study of music theory you will find that it is impossible to learn it all in one lifetime
Yeah honestly drums are way easier than guitar in my honesty opinion alot of things seem far more difficult on paper than they actually are to play guitar is chords and scales mixed with rhythms while drums you mostly focus on rhythms so instead of over laying notes you get overlaying time signatures
@@xcodychaosx Musically simpler, perhaps. But in execution, its just harder to use all four limbs and play this stuff. Guitar is harder to get into because of the precise nature of it all but it gets easier. You think you're good at drums at the beginning then something like this hits you and you realize how much you really suck. Been drumming for 13 years and playing guitar for 6.
Im just saying that most of the drums on music thats on the radio is easily played almost soons as you've learned anything drumwise where as guitar you really have to learn fundamentals and not just bang around till it sounds right no you might not be playing tool right of the bat but i mean 6 or 7 months in i am and ive got basic 3 4 polyrhythms down so i guess it could just seem easier for me personally cuz when i picked up the drums i felt right at home like i had wasted a bunch of time trying to learn guitar and drums just kinda came to me naturally
@@xcodychaosx Well, anything on the radio is super simple lmao
Ive lways thought That ticks and leeches drum intro is one of the coolest sounding things ever
Danny's drumming is just incredible. thanks
Such an awesome beat, you gotta love it! Great lesson!
I love this,I'll have to practice this over and over...thank you
This is one of my favorite licks Danny does, so glad you picked it! 3:49
This is excellent instruction. Thank you!
Nice lesson! Can't get enough of those Danny Carey beats! Thanks!
Very happy to see Tool lessons!
Aaron Edgar is just the sickest ! I could seriously watch your vids all day man .
Me too
Best lesson I've ever seen on RUclips hands down
This is awesome!! Please do part 2!!!
I’ve been wanting to learn this for years thank you
One of my favourite tracks from my favourite band!
Cheers for this!
Mr Carey is a beast!
Two things: 1) Great breakdown! Well done. 2) Your drums sound KILLER. They sound perfect to my ear - just ridiculously good.
Love this dudes drum setup!!
Awesome video dude, great instructional
Expectation: ppppppphhhhhhhffffff this is eassssy
Reality: WHY ARE MY ARMS IN THIS POSITION?!?!
YEEEEEEESSSSSSS!!!!!! Well done sir, well done.
Man those Sonors sound nice!
I'm 12 and I've been playing for 3 years, I just learned polyrythem beats from one of his other vids it took me about a week to master it but this in my opinion is about 10 times harder
Thank you!!! You are one of the BEST!!
your drums are tuned wonderfully, they really have a great sound for tool's music. Almost a tabla vibe
Eulogy is a really cool groove. I tried to learn that when my sad had a kit. Never quite got it. Really great lesson. Thanks for posting.
great video, thanks!
Thanks for the lesson!
Great lesson thank you.
The drum sound was spot on. Always thought that ticks and leeches beat was straight sixteenths. Great lesson cheers!
This guy is a great teacher.
Great Job !!
Need more tool breakdowns! Great work!
Yay Aaron Edgar!
Aaron is a freaking boss! awesome as always
Hey Danny! The Sonor's are legit......... Merry Christmas!!!
Dude thank you so much! Ticks and leeches are definitely on my list of songs to learn now.
This is just great! Chapeau!
The most amazing thing about this tutorial is how good those drums sound.
Any insight into the mics and signal path?
Great playing! Sounds really nice. I found out about this lesson today.. What I hear is on the 1 (every bar) he's playing his second floortom, the rest is exactly how it is written. That is the only time (groove wise) that he is hitting his second floor tom. I know in this setup there is no second floortom but to me it's worth mentioning because he (Danny C.) is, when in the beginning of the song, actually playing the melody that the band is playing later. The toms are in tune with the rest of the instruments. Anyway, great lesson! Keep it up! thanks.
Nice job!
Sounds great brother!
love this channel
I love how drumeo puts the sheet music in for these videos. ^.^
What a great sounding kit!
Never noticed how similar that part in Eulogy is to When the Levee Breaks...awesome lesson
i love the sound of that kit.. kickass..
This guys a great teacher!
Is there a rock drummer with better taste and groove than Danny? He just seems so much more complete than any drummer I have heard
Thanks for that Aaron Edgar
Great lesson Danny
I agree with the a lot of the comments. Great lesson! Love the Sonor sound.
This is wild, subbed.
Danny is an epic!
More tool plz
Awesome... More Danny please!
when you first thought it was actually Danny Carey ;_;
IKRRRRRR!!!!!! And then I was Lik "That's Danny Carey??????!!!!!!"
+Vexius Garfield It says "Aaron Edgar Drum Lesson"
+Guy Piechoczek It didn't say that when it first came out
ugh yep
He would never do something like this
Some nice beats in here and I really like Eulogy.
Very good.
GOD bless you!!
Danny is just a beast... period!!!
Thanks Aaron
That was awesome.
That is amazing how you broke down the "Eulogy" solo. Do you realize I've been working on that for almost 5 years? Didn't think anyone on YT would touch it. Started with just the hat and snare and just now incorporating the BD with absolutely no success 😒. Goes against every tick of my internal clock. This is also an amazing excercise in hand foot independence. So with that said, congrats and I hate you! 😉 😄But seriously, Thank You for that amazing deconstruction of what has become my personal unobtanium of drumming. As is most of Carey's amazing feats of drumming. How does hebcome up with this stuff? He is definitely in touch with some kind of percussional Akashic record .
Awesome choice
Hey Aaron, I just found this and I want to say thank you. It is really eye opening to see the breakdown, as sometime all of that goes right by while I close my eyes and just feel the rhythms. You are a GREAT drummer - very awesome! Did you go to music school after high school?
danny carey is a beast! love this video :)
Yay! Aaron! You rock!
This is the third different attempt to the groove Eulogy i saw on RUclips now. I prefer the steady 16th beat on hi-hat and open every first of the three notes. (plus i think i read an article 10 years ago, where Danny Carey explains it that way. Maybe I'm mistaken ) Play it like your way is much harder, i will try it! Keep coming those videos! I like!
Thanks!
Danny Carey is so beast. I can’t express it more.
Great lesson, one of my all time favorite bands and influences :) I love the way these drums sound! Where can I learn about Aaron Edgar's gear??
Love it.
Yes I love the Eulogy beat
More please!
SONOR..... Nice job Sir!!!
awesome vid!
Please do Rosetta Stoned! Ive been trying to learn it for years!
That was very helpful! It’s a shame you didn’t get more likes.
Thank you! I learned something useful!
Aaron, you are a BOSS! I like to see more TOOl drum tabs here. Lateralus in it's entirety would be a hella awesome, but i can see 9+ minutes being a bit much. Would love it though. :)
amazing
Montreal represent!
He makes it look so easy.
You should get Matt Halpern on Drumeo
pretty cool thanks
Get Danny Carey you know we all want him!
Awesome! now can you just do this for every part of every tool song ever
Almost got the Eulogy bridge down! its sooo damn difficult 🤯
👍bonne démonstration avec les notes qui défilent!!!...( le son des toms me fait penser à l'album de TOTO remember avec Philips la batterie)... bravo et merci pour le partage//FRANCE
awesome.
You're a beast!
Pretty nice, you should make much more Danny Carey's fills, he is one of the best an enigmatic drummers of the past decades, he is a beast and realy destroy the drums & beats
