Throughout his years of playing gigging and performing, Randy Cooke constantly gets asked how on earth he remembers all the songs he needs to play - especially when there’s little to no rehearsal time. His solution? Song charts.
Think of these as “cheat sheets” for songs. This alleviates the need to memorize every single individual part of each song and provides you with an easy way to learn a large quantity of music in a short amount of time. The main goal is to write the least amount of notes as possible, but enough so you can find your way around the song. Make your own abbreviations, symbols, or notes!

Band mates: we need you to learn a cover for the gig tomorrow.
Me: no problem, I know how to chart songs out now.
Band mates: cool, it’s “Change of Seasons” by Dream Theater.
    Me: fuck.

I would have liked to see him chart out a song he's actually never heard, cause then it would prove that you can chart out a song short hand and play it right away, with out already having it memorized.

Gotta say, I do that all the time. Just about every new song I have to play I chart out. I now have hundreds of charts that I can refer back to if at some point in the future I need to play them again.

Pat I do that too. Then when the band comes to rehearsal and has a disagreement on the part I have the lyrics and structure in front of me. I also make notes as to where a solo is taken. This makes learning the song so much easier because the form (or structure) is based off the lyrics.

This is very similar to what I do. "HH 1/8th", "FT Ride", etc. I can read just a little but I'm nowhere close to fluent enough to quickly write out what I'm hearing. Like Pat Jennings below, I make my notes over the lyrics. This adds some time to the process because I have to find the lyrics and sometimes even write them out in Word or something myself, but it helps me not worry about counting measures. The tricky part is when the song gets to a music break and there are no lyrics to follow along to. I think this is where I adapt Randy's method.

I think most drummers have their own way of “charting” songs? Me personally, I do like a lot of others are saying. I’ll print the lyrics out and make notes where things will need to change, or where a fill starts and stops, pauses, builds up, etc. directly over the word where whatever needs to happen in the song. Having the lyrics also helps me memorize the song a lot faster as well. There’s no right way or wrong way to do this, it’s really a matter of what works for you personally.

Wow, you're lucky. :) I find out what song it is during the intro. Feel it out from.the bass line, switch it up if it feels wrong.
Overall, I memorize the DRUMMER'S style and habits, NOT the song! That's the secret!
Example: Steve Smith likes 4 HH beats. I don't ever recall 16ths, and even 8ths are unusual. NEVER forget the big 2 floor tom.build. It's in every Journey song!
Jeff Porcaro: watch the feet. They tend to be hard. Examples, Beat it (Michael Jackson): relatively straight hands, kick on 1, 2, 3, 4 then 1, 2, 3 uh 4. Lowdown by Boz Skaggs. Better brush up on that open HH technique...also Porcaro. It's extremely smooth.
Older songs, early Rock.and roll sounds a lot like big band stuff only simpler and louder. Use the ride where you'd put the HH. NO double bass! Ghost notes on snare might come up.
Danny Seraphine of Chicago likes sets of 4s on his tom.fills...

Thanks for the great tips. I’m a teacher and this helped me to explain to students short hand methods vs writing out entire pieces and the uses for both. I see complainers that he “already knows the song” - who cares, if he didn’t know, it would just take a bit longer to listen but his results would be the same. Thank you!!!

I'd like to see a charting system for drummers like myself who don't read music.
I know what 8th notes are and all that but I'd like to see a system that uses a different mnemonic device for describing what's happening. Closest to that that I come is to describe passages in terms of other passages that they resemble such as "fill that sounds like intro to Two Princes" or something like that. A better system exists, I'm sure.

    • @The-Seventies
      @The-Seventies Год назад +1

I do that to. I don’t know that much bout rudiments and stuff, so I write stuff like ‘two flams’ ‘snare roll’ ‘crazy fill’ and so on. Works for me, especially if I’ve heard the song a couple of times.

he was teaching concepts and principals, with a "do it the way you need to" attitude. You aren't supposed to follow exactly what he does, he's showing his version of the method, you are supposed learn the idea, adapt and apply for yourself.
Sloppiness was a result of rushing through it and using a sharpie, while also writing large to be visible to the cameras. If your handwriting is unreadable despite trying to be neat, that is your problem.

My charts are the clearest when I have a new line for each section of the song.
