Superb. IMO, these types of videos are SO much better than the typical videos teaching how to play a solo note-for-note -- sure, you'll learn to play THAT solo, but you won't learn WHY it works in the process. By contrast, students who follow your videos will become able to learn any solo on their own, by applying these analytical techniques that you use and explain. Bravo.
I like the pinball analogy for hitting chord tones -- though I'd have thought you'd tie pinball into that OTHER British guitarist (Pete Townshend) rather than David Gilmour :-).

Great lesson Stitch! This is integral to David Gilmours style as well as playing melodically. The other big secret he has is manipulating rythm. He very often will change his rythm into triplets, play on the offbeats or play out of rythms entirely then flow back into it. Also his ending solo in the song "on the turning away" is arguably his most melodic and a great study. It's worth checking out!

Well, ignore all those thoughts about my second grade teacher. I mostly over that! ;-) Thanks for the great video.
Got the chord charts with it, a great lesson , after seeing Gilmour live in 2016 I was stunned how he can do these solos without effort the best i can describe his playing live is honey rolling off a spoon, he takes you to different place, as for the lesson it's tricky I am still learning only 2 years in but I like to push and challenge myself as a way of learning, manipulation is key skill I really want to get under my belt, in my goal to improvise on the guitar, thanks Ian cheers Brian, :)

I never tried to play this solo because in my mind it would be to difficult for me, but just by seeing this lesson and knowing the song and the solo by heart (from a lifetime of listening to it) I could kinda make it sound like the original. At least it gave me a starting point to look for the notes and the ideas (arpeggios) to cover some of the sounds.

I have been playing for over 35 years.... self taught. I really dig your pinball analogy! I learned the Time solo last year (as close as I can get it!). Funny... that's how I played lead forever!
You remind me of the long haired t-top trans am driving teacher I had at 15 years old for 2 months. He got fired for not following the Mel Bay Method. Instead, he taught me Rush! 2112!

i'd say that f# minor pentatonic is a safe pick for the chord progression 'cause it is the relative minor of A and is conteined into the dorian mode of E

I am now happily working my way through all of your videos. In one of your early Q&A's, you said "to be a good lead player, practice all of your chords". Could you please elaborate? Do you mean play the A major in all positions or all of the chords in the A major key or play all the extended shapes in one position or should it be multiple chords. I am new to this concept. Can you give couple of examples of practicing all your chords?

Yeah. Learn your chord scales. Leads are derived from the chord tones as well as modes that go along with each degree of that major scale. I don't think that answered your question. Lol

Most youtube guys would would play a strat and a Twin. Here's my PRS with p90s (Hollow Body). BTW very helpful. I knew bending up to chord tones is the sound I'm hearing, but it's great to have someone show it.

Hey, this is off subject a bit... I was watching Richie Kotzen speak about using a C# scale (Natural minor?) to play leads that are in key wherever you play the scale. He compared it to the black keys on a piano keyboard. I didn't completely get it, I'm very familiar with neverlost now, it's it in that realm? Do you know what he's talking about? Cheers
The C# major scale has 7 sharps.

I've been listening to this album for 45 years. Not continuously... But it's practically spiritual to me. Us and them never fails to make my eyes well up. I picture those young men climbing out of the trenches and throwing their lives away against the opposition machine guns. For what? "God only knows it's not what we would choose, to do"
1) How much of Gilmour's technique do you think was an intentional pentatonic manipulation and how much do you think was muscle memory from "Crap! Wrong note! Bend up!" ? I'm very Gilmour-esque in my improv due to those last-minute bends. 😜
2) How has the looper pedal changed your teaching approach? I assume you WERE the looper for your students in the past, just playing a progression over and over again while they practice over it. Do you think a looper could be a crutch in any way? (I couldn't live without mine!)

I'm lovin' it...but, I have a bit of constructive criticism. I would have liked an F#m pentatonic as Gilmour instead of lumping all the lessons in one. It reminds me of my old teacher that gave me 5 new lessons in each session, and I would forget 4 of them. Hey, man, we have time! I was getting lost and it sounded great...

hmmmmm been awhile since i have felt the urge two watch your youtube stuff, you caught my attention on this one,, i love his style...sweetwater is huge as far as companies they have thousands of guitars alone...ahhh two me it is a blues progression thats it... just making cool sounds with a steaming guitar lead...
