I made a mistake with 8:40 - I actually didn't need to put that correction there as it is actually 30% (not 80%), and at 8:25 the tool is called 'Transparent-Foreground', not that one shown.
Great tutorial, but I want artists that see this to remember that unique art styles are just as great as well In comics. Not everyone wants the same style they’ve seen and don’t think you have to change it to make a webtoon.
I mean I could just read a random comic or even opt for any other manga if I wanted to for a change of artstyle but webtoon has the certain artstyle that is like a trademark kinda thing the way I can actually tell its a webtoon...
Honestly I’m a newer artist starting and I’ve been kinda just dabbling in everything from realistic to manga trying to develop a style while learning the basics because I just find it fun experimenting.
I have a distinct art style I like, but I am studying this particular style right now because I want to tell a story that will benefit from imitating many genre conventions to the play with and subvert some of them. I do hope young artists are willing to embrace their own style and will understand that style can be a tool!
Wow, excellent tutorial! Ive been struggling with learning how to shade, I'm going to try your method next time I do digital, it made it so much easier to understand
Hello I am a beginner to be a manhwa artist so thank u so much I appreciate that u are helping beginners thank u ^_^ and god bless u and thank u to inspire me to be one of u ^_^ I wish that u see my comment and reply it to
Yes, I also agree that I was missing accurate bone structure in the side profile section of this vid, so I'll definitely adjust that on a revised ver. of the tutorial in the future. Your feedback is appreciated and thanks for watching ^^
a great way to know if you understand something (and sometimes to even teach yourself/refresh your knowledge) is if you can teach others! sounds like to me you at least have a good grasp of how to study hair. im sure your technique will improve in no time. knowing how to study things is vital
When I look at this video now I missed some important points about hair and other parts too😅 - so I definitely have to make a revised version of this tutorial in the future. Thank you for your kind comment !
Quick question, how do you know what kind of shaping FOR the shading and lighting? That's what keeps getting me. I mean I can kind of get where to put it, but I see the shapes of the shading and lighting and it kinda confuses me on what is done a lot and shapes for it. Heeeelllpppp
That's a great question. When it comes to shading and lighting, I find (scalene) triangles and (irregular) quadrilaterals the most universal shapes used in clothing creases, hair, complex shadows and lighting. Even for big complex areas, it usually is just a bunch of triangles and quadrilaterals combined together. But for smooth curved surfaces (like the chest of a person, suit sleeves), it would be a simple rectangle/line depending on how heavy the light and shadows are. In addition for a more 'manhwa' look, airbrush where the edge of the shadow is a little. I am going to make a revised version of the tutorial in the future, and I'll definietly add more detail on this. Thanks for watching!
@smochibird Was also gonna ask, in the way you shade and light, how do you determine the shaping for the shading and lighting? I've noticed that obviously there's those shapes you said, but it's kinda confusing on how to shape them and where to put them without going too overboard.
@@RealDVBCif I was unsure of what shading to do, I would start off by blocking in 1/3 to 2/3 of the area you're filling in, randomly (like a scribble fill in). The left over parts will be where the light/shade is strongest. Then detail the block in by erasing away areas. This way you don't need to know what exact shapes, but just estimates. This might be hard to explain in text, but I hope it helps.
OOH those insanely detailed dresses and clothes in drama and royal romance manhwa have?? I think they use already-made design presets that they buy the rights to and can just paste on I think (lmao I really am just guessing), or they hire someone else entirely to draw them up each time. Ik that for the highly detailed bgs in royal settings they usually buy packages from designers so I'm just assuming they might do the same thing for the clothes... But when you are not doing comics as a job I think we have to do the hustle life and draw all of it by ourselves.
@@smochibird yea i want to start doing manhwas in royalty/fantasy genre but i think the hardest thing for me now is the actual drawing/story line all my myself :,)
I don't have an official list as its very plain, so here ya go: - Pen - Watercolour - Airbrush But all of them are pressure sensitive, as I have a stylus. It won't have the same effect without the pressures.
Instagram, Twitter, Deviantart or any other social platform with an art community is a good place to start to look for someone, by putting an ad post or just msg ppl if they are accepting work like that (don't spam and dont make ur text scam looking tho lol). Good luck 👍!
Thanks for watching! - if it's alright with you, it'll be great if you can give me advice to improve the side profiles, I really appreciate the feedback ^^
@@smochibird ill try to explain clearly, sorry if it might not make sense! Looking at a side view, the height of the head must be the same length as the length of the head. So you should be able to get a square if you join up all the corners of the head. The way you drew side views, you would get a rectangle if you join up all the corners of the head.
@@euphisa8127 that's a very clear explanation, sometimes I forget to apply the basic fundamentals and end up straying off that. Thank you for taking the time to write - in the future I will make a revised version of this tutorial and make sure to keep it in mind!
Well, manhwa (and manga and manhua) translate to literally 'comic'. So just by drawing comics, you are already considered a 'manhwa' artist :) but Idk if that's what you mean lol - if you mean a *manhwa* artist (a Korean comic artist) you have to post on Naver or a Korean comic platform and post in Korean... I think that's out of the question for many english speakers.
I see, the long answer is simply by reading and observing existing manhwa webcomics (webtoon has tonnes of them). I usually take screenshots of the best parts I like and try mimicking the techniques, or write notes about the story, etc. When I have time I will make more detailed tutorials based on manwha-styled comics. I'm sure there are many YT tutorials on this too (most are in Korean/Chinese though, but I guess auto-translate subs and stuff, try putting in 웹툰 제작 과정을 on the search bar ). Short answer, read and observe manhwas!

My best bet is to either go to freelance websites and search for artists there (e.g., fiverr, Upwork) or contact artists on social media you know, like Instagram.
Well, it's never too late to start! You could do your story with a very simple artstyle that you're able to begin with (stick figures even...), and from there you could learn as u go
