    4:39 This part of the episode freaking breaks me. My great grandmother had dementia and was starting to forget everyone. My dad would visit her and would look at the photos by her bed and ask her about them. She looked at one of her husband, who been dead for about a decade, and said “I can’t remember his name, I just remember he was a special friend and always made me happy.”
    He would then go, “I think that’s your husband since that’s your wedding photo.” She would sometimes remember him when he said that. He would then go, “See that picture of your son, that’s my dad. That means I’m your grandson.” She would then smile at that, then my dad would show pictures of me and my siblings. “These are my kids, that means they’re your great grandchildren.” She would smile again and say, “I always wanted to be a great grandmother.”

      Old Man Voll hits me the hardest out of all the short stories in the season for that exact reason. It really feels like a story that younger viewers are less likely to relate to, but means so much for us who are older. The same goes with Heiter and Frieren's conversation about faking being an adult. We were all kids once in our lives.

    I think the reason Himmel never actually told Frieren how he felt was this meeting with Voll. Seeing how the death of his wife effected the rest of his life probably made Himmel worried that if he and Frieren had an actual romantic relationship, it might effect the rest of her long life in the way it did Voll and did not want her spending the rest of her life missing him. The way this show hits the "People won't know how you feel unless you tell them" line so many times, I think it shows that Himmel never actually saying it was a choice on his part.

    I like how this show goes against the usual Cliché of elf not respecting dwarf, with frieren having a lot of respect for them and even admiration specifically for warriors throughout the story, which us amusing considering she is a mage the total opposite of warriors.
    Also usually elf are always portrayed as vegetarians in different midia but frieren isn't at all lol she is almost a carnivore 😂😊

      I believe it's because writers tend to be creatively bankrupt regarding the whole dwarf & elf stereotypes that mostly stem from Tolkien or D&D. It's very refreshing to see even the slightest bit of variance in their depiction like here.

      Japanese fantasy has different tropes than Western fantasy. They have their own tropes like Adventure Guilds, a Demon King, a Hero Party, etc... Dwarves and Elves not getting along is actually kinda rare in Japanese fantasy, at least of those that I'm aware of.

    • @101Mant
      @101Mant 11 дней назад +8

      @@Omar_Al_Seddikmost of those are western tropes though. The hero party comes from the fellowship and all the bands of plucky heroes in stories that followed. The demons king is just the dark lord tropez again very common in western fantasy.
      Japanese fantasy does seem to have been more influenced by games that were influenced by books rather than directly hence the adventures guild which is more a gaming trope.

    • @Ergoperidot
      @Ergoperidot 11 дней назад +4

      Going against tropes is a great avenue for world building and character building. At least I think so. It makes us notice our preconceived notions about the world(s) we pay attention to, whether it’s fictional or our world.
      Edit: and even though elf/dwarf feuds may not be a thing in Japanese writing, it’s still meaningful that we view things like that through our lenses of analysis. It still breaks the trope, even if that isn’t its intention. 😁

    12:23 a little fun fact here. Frieren says she could have used magic if it were a bronze statue, since back in episode 2 or so she learned a spell for cleaning bronze statues with Fern. What that also means is that Kraft is so old that he was from a time period prior to the knowledge of making bronze statues, however long that may have been. But that along with Kraft calling Frieren young several episodes ago really helps show how insanely long he’s been around.

    I also think kraft now believes in the goddess not only because he wants to reunite with his friend who probably died but also he understood humanity will eventually forget you but the goddess will not since she is everlasting, which shows that kraft has a superior understanding of life than most people have, maumybe because of how old he is

In this case, it seems to be more in the D&D style and the main difference is that monks are religious and fight with martial arts, while priests are religious and can use divine magic. Monks might or might not in this world function as some sort of priest in their religious organization, but since his statue showed him as a warrior with a sword, I guess the implication is that he became religious and shifted his focus to unarmed, less deadly, combat. But we didn't see anything to suggest he can also cast divine-granted spells like Heiter or Sein, who are actual priests. The warrior/priest combo who uses holy magic is usually the Paladin, not the Monk.

      Yeah, in the episode when they met, Stark said he looked powerful and he must be a famous monk and asked him about it, but Kraft just looked kind of serious for a moment, avoided the question and changed the subject to how they needed to go out and get the frozen supplies from his wagon. Later he told Frieren he believed in the goddess because he needed someone to remember him and his deeds, so I guess whether he's famous or not is a bit of a sensitive subject to him because he's seen that fame fades over time. The story building of this show is so subtle but absolutely crazy. They tell us how long it has been since Kraft has been a hero, without saying it outright. Frieren says, "If these statues were made of bronze, it would have been easier.". Meaning, Kraft and Goatee Priest were hero's BEFORE the Bronze Age. If we were to compare it to our time, Kraft would have been equivalent to Gilgamesh or another Mesopotamian legend in the present day of Frieren. That's almost 5 thousand years in the past.

    Old Man Voll has lived far past his time, and it's not catching up to him - it's caught up. When they suddenly start remembering old things crisply and clearly, it's nearing the end. Frieren realized this. It was clear to see on her face. That's why she said she'd remember him, because she knew the next time she came by he wasn't likely to be there. By the way, translate "Voll" from German to English and you get "Full." As in, full life (Old Man Voll), or full of history (Voll Basin).

    This episode is ranked #2 in the list of episodes that f*ck me up every time, no matter how many times I watch them (#1 is episode 12, with Stark's memories of his brother, because DAMN), and I'm probably up around 40-ish rewatches now. I've had memory problems my whole life, and they get worse as I get older. Right now it's still more "occasional inconvenience" than "serious problem," but I've saw what cognitive decline did to my grandfather when I was a kid and I live in terror of what I may begin to forget as time continues to progress. As two different characters in this anime say, "The passage of time is cruel."
    I guess I just say all that to say it's only human to cry during this episode. Not everybody has the same reasons, of course, but the author of the manga and the director of the anime really understand the human heart and mind and they know how to touch parts of them we didn't even know needed healing.

    • @aediusbarbatus

      On a more practical note, "voll" means "full" in German. There have probably been at least five different commenters popping in now and then to drop the "fun fact" that all the personal and place names in the series are German and they're often really on-the-nose. "Voll Basin" is full of meaning (or history or trees or something, IDK), and "Old Man Voll" has led a full life. As far as I know, it's the only time the same German word is used more than once, but there's no evidence they're related in any way.
      I just think it's funny that people think they're revealing some big secret when they say "all the names are German!" as if like half of anime doesn't use Germanic naming conventions for its European-coded caucasian equivalents. 😅

      By the way, did you notice what may have been implied at the end where Voll remembered his wife?.. Much like my late grandma who neared her end, his memories finally became clear, a time of terminal lucidity where they may remember what they have forgotten. Frieren might've known that, hence her short and concise "Sore Ja" which would translate as "Bye", much like a see you later.. which would imply that they'd see him later at Ende.

    • @aediusbarbatus
      @aediusbarbatus 11 дней назад +1

      @ I can see that as a possibility, but I actually interpreted that scene a little differently. One of Voll-ji's problems is that nobody in the village will just hang out and talk to him. The isolation he endures just sitting there at the edge of the village, day in and day out, with everyone who lives there thinking of him as "just a senile old man," would definitely exacerbate the kind of cognitive decline he displays. Our brains keep working longer and better when we are able to actually use them.
      When he remembers his wife after talking to Frieren, I understood that to be specifically because he was able to actually talk about her with someone the day before. The way Old Man Voll's village treats him is a shame for several reasons, but perhaps first among them is that they are literally making him decline faster.

    The statue of Kraft and the guy who looks like Sein that they saw as children was implied to be close to his village, and it wasn't the same they saw in this episode. Heiter was with them in the flashback and they were children, so it happened during Heiter's visit to his village. One of them even said the village chief said the statue depicted ancient heroes nobody remembers anymore. So there's probably a few statues of Kraft and his friend strewn across the continent, though nobody remembers who they are because whatever they did happened so long ago.

      It's possible since Ewig is a hero from the mythical era.

    • @ninnikuprobability

      It's a cool theory but Sage and Priest are different classes, and everyone recognizes Kraft's companion as a priest since he's holding a Holy Scripture (a priest's weapon, akin to Kraft's sword.)
      There's another theory but it's heavy manga spoilers.

    The immortality of elves in Frieren's world is optimized to such a degree that my theory crafted opinion (not spoiler nor official) is that the ancestors of elves strove to achieve immortality as a very deliberate project. One wherein details important to making a long life worth living were taken into account. Details such as sharp memory and supple minds able to learn new things throughout their long lives were baked into the genetic/magical heritage just as much as the regeneration of cartilage in knees and teeth would have been. I think we see this highlighted in contrast to the much less perfect memory of Old Man Vol. A long lived dwarf with high skills who is set in his ways with fuzzier memory than we've seen with elves.

    ok i should probably clarify. there's an "anime" character archetype of a *mature* (late 20s to early 40s) older lady that has a mature apeal to her. Sein isn't actually looking for grandmas and while frieren i old she is not very mature (nor looks very mature) which is the reason she doesnt fit his criteria

    We have indeed heard the word Voll before in the show, in reference to the Voll basin which Frieren, Fern and Eisen explore to find Flamme's genuine notes. Good memory!
    The german word Voll refers to being full or saturated. One might take this as a reference to the Voll basin having once been full of water or life at the time it was named, and maybe one could interpret meaning into the promise of a meaningful adventure trapped in Flamme's notes, just awaiting Frieren's arrival. I'd say that in old man Voll's case, the name is probably meaningful in regards to the full life he has led defending a cherished promise.

    Time is truly an Extradimensional Reality. 🧘
    - Time reveals all wounds, with a promise to heal them, if you give them time to. 🪞
    - while time is fleeting, our memories of the past tend to remain static- moving our hearts more and more as it passes. 🔄
    We remember the past to inform the future, but set it aside to face it. 😌
    ✋ Live in the present 🤚
    Because it is the only thing that is always here and now!

    I think Himmel realized during his conversation with Voll that Frieren will be the ‘Voll’ of his party one day. She’ll be old, decrepit, and carrying the accumulated stress and emotional anguish of a thousand human lifetimes, so he made it his duty to make her as happy as possible while he was alive.
    Perhaps that’s why elves are so emotionally closed off. It’s an evolutionary response. A method of self-preservation. If they felt as much as humans do then they’d suffer emotional collapse along their insanely long lifespans.

    We've heard the name Voll before but in context to Voll Basin which is where Flamme's house was. Whether Old Man Voll has any connection to it, who knows. Old Man Voll is finally going senile in that he doesn't remember that the Demon King was defeated.

    Is it just me that thought that Voll old man memory is getting worse with that comment, that's why Frieren said she'll bring his memories too to the future, after his nearing death. 400 years old dwarf, that'd be like 120 years old human or more.

      That's what it is. Slips like this can happen mid-conversation, where they go from perfectly lucid to missing time and memory. Sometimes it hurts too much to remind the person again and again that they are slipping, so you just ignore it.
