the producer of the show said when he read chapter 1 of the manga, he cried and felt there is something changed inside him. And I love how he gather all of the talented people on the studio to just show us and let us feel what he felt on chapter 1 by seriously crafting one of the best art, music and story in modern anime. They did Frieren justice.
This quickly became my favorite anime pilot of all time. It boggles my mind how the characters become so developed and important to you in the span of about 10 minutes. Masterful storytelling in every way! I hope you enjoy the show! It gets so much better, although I know that doesn't make sense at the moment, because that is an amazing first episode. You care so much for the characters, immediately.
Its kinda crazy to think about but Heiter was really old, assume Heiter was 18 when they started their adventure, he was 28 when it ended, 78 when he saw the meteor shower again, and when he died 25-26 years after Himmel that would mean Heiter died at 103-104 years old
After reflecting about it for a while, I realized that this might be my favourite pilot ever (at least with the 20 minute format). It’s amazing how this episode manages to combine so many heartfelt moments with an inevitable tragedy soon after that all ties in with the main character’s flaw. And that doesn’t come in form of a demon or any heartpounding, flashy action scenes, just the passage of time and Frieren’s lack of understanding of human lifespans and their emotional connections. The fact that it happens so quickly really gives a good insight in how an elf perceives time and it’s all the more impressive how we as an audience actually manage to care even though we knew Himmel for just a short amount of time (just like Frieren did).
It does good but it's unfortunate that this 20 minute episode isn't the first episode and is more of part 1 of the first episode thanks to the way it was originally released being cut up into the first 4 episodes
Even knowing Frieren was beloved by pretty much everyone and I came in with high expectations, the show still blew me away. The animation, voice acting and music are all fantastic, but the writing is what makes the show truly stand out. The characters are all so likeable and well written and it deals with such complex themes like grief and love in a way that stuck with me even months after finishing it.
I've said it before, and I'll say it again: this was the PERFECT show to follow up Jujutsu Kaisen. Don't get me wrong; it hurts, too. But it hurts in a very special and well-done way. Frieren tugs on the heartstrings, whereas JJK viciously rips them out and shoves them down your throat while laughing at your pain.
I'd say the pain is more subtle and you'll have more time to think about the heartbreak while watching them move forward in the future :D I think the way the flashbacks were placed in between the present scenes are very meaningful and well-paced too. JJK is something you watch if you want to hurt yourself with heartbreak with no guarantee of a happy ending lol
After you finish the series, I highly recommend going back and rewatching this first episode again. Everything hits you much harder and seems more significant so that you can really appreciate how amazing this episode and this show really are. I mean, on its surface, it's a show about interpersonal relationships and the passage of time. That just doesn't sound that exciting or interesting, at least in terms of anime, and yet this is probably my favorite anime of all time (so far). I think I may focus my attention on manga and anime written by women more often from now on. Given how much I've enjoyed this series, Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood, Violet Evergarden, and Apothecary Diaries, I don't think I can really go wrong with this decision.
Ever since I finished Frieren I've been saying "I can't wait for Kenny and Montana to react to this". I'm so glad you're finally watching it! You're in for something really special and beautiful.
Something that immediately hooked me to the show is, as per the show's name, the fact that the story starts after the Demon King is defeated. Where most stories would reach its climax, this one deals with what happens *after* the end of that adventure. To most people, while they will remember you and appreciate what you've done for them, life simply goes on. And who better to follow in that story than Frieren, who doesn't apperciate the little things in life and who lets life pass her by, until her companions grow old and start to die? It's such a brilliant writing choice right from the start that I knew I'd love this story.
@@Marta-uv4id I think it's hilarious how so many reactors at the beginning are convinced that the Demon King is gonna return anytime soon or maybe he left an egg behind or smth etc. People, it's not that kind of show ^^
I literally just started this yesterday! It’s really one of those interesting stories where the main events have already passed and you’re left with the aftermath, like in One Punch Man where Saitama is already the strongest and is struggling to deal with that. This however focused more on the importance of connections and the struggles of eternal life (or just long lifespans in this case) that I feel is definitely worth exploring👍
This is one of those shows where you can get just as much on a rewatch as you can from your first watch. For example, it's amazing just how much harder Himmel's death hits, after you've finished the season.😢
I dunno WHAT was wrong with me when I first watched this episode and season, but it wasn't till my first rewatch that I realized, "I think I love this series."
There is something cool about the endings songs in this anime: Both endings are the same song. 1st verse is Himmel talking to Frieren 2nd verse is Frieren responding to Himmel
Studio Madhouse's animation is obviously stellar in this show, but I think I love Evan Call's musical score even more. 🎶 🎶 It's so distinct among anime soundtracks, even other fantasy series. There are times when Frieren's music gives me Lord of the Rings vibes, and THAT is high praise.
1) Glad to see a new show i can watch with you guys 2) Appreciate the eng dub so i dont have to focus as much on the subtitles 3) Great choice of show!
Although I loved this show, I feel like writers fail to grasp and therefore explore what it would really be like to live for so long, in most of the movies, and shows I've watched. Someone that would be impatient (13:00) waiting a few minutes for another person, would experience time the same way we all do. To a moment by moment basis and with the same experiential speed of humans. That would mean two things. 1) That person wouldn't see 10 or 50 years as inconsequential in terms of the way they experience them. 2) Their existence would be unbearable because of its length and repetitiveness. I think this character would make more sense as an otherworldly creature that experiences time differently then we do, not caring or responding to its environment, but I understand that would be boring to watch.
this anime is like if frieren was telling the story, so we see time like she does, that's why it feels like we are skipping things because for frieren 50 years is like nothing.
When it comes to how I rate media something that is heavily weighted for me is the ending. Like i don't wanna watch a movie, show, book, etc. if the ending just ruined the whole experience. That doesn't mean i don't appreciate bad endings. Take Cyberpunk tragic ending, but a great ending for the story. All that to say while this anime is not finished and as such i could never give it a 10/10 as a series it's a 9/10 on just this season. I loved this anime
So if your curious about the abrupt endings you like alot of people didnt know this but the first 4 episodes were meant as an hour and a half long special so they can be abit weird at their endings just to let you know Blame Crunchyroll for splitting them up
I honestly never felt that. I think these first four episodes flow just fine on their own, and having four episodes for one reaction video is unreasonable.
@HaydrogenBomb which is why only 2 reaction channels have ever done all 4 but a lot have also broken it down to 2 because episode 2 has a more satisfying conclusion then the first
Y'all have become like siblings at this point. Moments like this that first discovering a new anime together is one of the main reasons I started watched some 20+ years ago.
@HaydrogenBomb to me ik they married they say that every intro but I'll never get married so that no frame of reference for me. Siblings I have and care for. Did u really think I thought they were sibling when he says his beautiful wife Montana

Ik that they are married to each other but that not how I see any of them. Did u really think I didn't listen when he introduced her as his wife. "Journey beyond end" is amazing as ocidental title but i wold like to bring attention to the original title "Sōsō no Frieren" has many meanings so here a few of then: "Frieren at the funeral" the most direct translation "Frieren who morns" another very close to direct translation "Frieren who brings Funeral" that is kinda a funny as sorta reads as "Frieren the Undertaker"
Am i having a deja vu? Because I'm pretty sure you already reacted to this and uploaded it on your channel. If not then i must be confusing you from other couple reaction channel. Anyway, frieren is the only anime in a long time that has gotten me excited each week, eagerly waiting for the next episode. Before this, I had been pretty much burned out on anime for many years because I had watched so many of them - probably over 1,000 (I've been watching anime continuously for almost 20 years). This burnout was especially due to most anime following the same repetitive tropes. Even now, with popular anime like My Hero Academia, Chainsaw Man, Jujutsu Kaisen, Solo Leveling, and Demon Slayer, etc. which many people get hyped about, I can't bring myself to finish them because of how many generic tropes they include. It makes sense, though; why change the formula if it still works and makes money? But for me, I usually can't even get past two or three episodes before I get bored and stop watching. That’s why I’m so happy that Frieren somehow reignited my joy for watching anime.
I used to watch a fair bit of anime but also got tired of a lot of the tropes. I know their are good ones out there but not always easy to find. Frieren was the first anime I've watched in years and it's so good. It even got me to read the manga. Sone of the tropes are still their but well done and the storytelling and characters are so good.
I generally try not to get into telling people how to enjoy things, but I really don't understand how people can stand watching this dubbed in English. I don't like dubbed anime voiceover performances almost as a rule, but I understand some people might actually enjoy that specific type of "stylized" performance (I'm trying to be charitable here). But with this show in particular, the Japanese VAs give such an amazing performance, so far beyond typical anime fare, that hearing the English-language VAs turn in basically the same kind of stuff as always is bad enough, and on top of that, they literally change the characterization of their roles. Japanese Himmel is soft-spoken and gentle; English Himmel is effeminate. Japanese Frieren is detached and matter-of-fact; English Frieren is sassy. Those two differences alone would change the tone of the dialogue even if the scripts weren't drastically different, but the English script also takes some serious liberties with the original writing. I haven't been able to sit through enough of the dub to judge characters beyond Himmel and Frieren, but those two are CENTRAL to the story, and between wild translation choices and VO performances that don't seem to understand the roles, they are simply weaker characters in the English dub. As carefully crafted as the original version was, I'm honestly shocked they let the English version out the door the way it is now.
I know it's too late, and that you're probably going to get a lot of comments like this, but seriously... Japanese people wrote this, casted it, directed it, animated it, and VOICED it. This deserves to be watched as intended, in Japanese. English speaking voice actors can not compare to the original.
Brother they explain this in literally every series. They don't WANT to watch it dubbed, but they genuinely have auditory processing issues and if they watched sub, it'd be constant pausing over and over and over. I like it because I don't watch the dub and this gives me the opportunity to do so while also hearing other peoples' feedback on the show
@@Not_too_sure ok, that's very reasonable. I didn't see that explanation in this video, so I didn't know it was a difficult ask. I stand by my opinion, while accepting the reality. Thank you.

So just if y'all have time on your own done even have to react. Ghost in The Shell the original animated is just incredible story the voice acting is awesome eng and sub the action is fluid it holds up. You love the Major you just don't know it yet
I won't be watching your reaction from here on out, since I can't stand the EN voice cast, but I wish you luck with the series, it is seriously one of my favorites. I have watched literally dozens of reactos' journeys and I think you can pick up so much life experience and insight from the series if you really pay attention to the message. The EN cast ruins 50% of that aspect with their dead delivery and terrible jokes that were not in the JP version.
I really hoped they would watch the sub version, dub while not bad doesn’t deliver like the original VA’s do. Excited to watch the reactions regardless
Absolutely incorrect. The Frieren Dub is phenomenal. People in Japan go out of their way to watch the dub. And besides, there’s like six thousand reactors watching the sub.
I think it really depends what you watch first as that becomes the "right" version then the other feels off. The dub is great though, different but as good.
@@Credemis We both have auditory processing issues making reacting in sub sadly impossible, just can’t process everything watching sub even off camera, so adding reacting on top of watching in a foreign language, while speaking in a different one, while reading, while watching visuals impossible for us all at the same time. We’re sure sub is AMAZING, just not possible for us :)
@rafaelbrisolara7599 they have visual processing disorders. It's something similar to how dyslexia works, it makes reading, looking at the animation difficult even when watching as a non reaction. You shouldn't get into the habit of disbelieving what people tell you about their own experiences, it's rude and unbecoming of a fellow human.
There’s like 60,000 sub reactions for this anime. Let those of us who want to actually want to see the reaction instead of reading the entire time have something for once.

Day 17 of asking for BLEACH
So much lost in the dub from the original, it’s a shame
I just cant with Freiren's English dub actor. Too sultry for the character.
I wish they did hunterxhunter
It's coming in a couple weeks, after they wrap up season seven of My Hero Academia.
Wdym wished? Their reaction is right around the corner
Why would you do that to yourselves. Why dub?
Watch ninjago
I really hoped they would watch the sub version, dub while not bad doesn’t deliver like the original VA’s do. Excited to watch the reactions regardless
We can’t watch sub :) but glad you’re here!!
@LettsReact Tbh, I love that you guys are one of few channels that watch dubs because I also can't watch subs. 😅
Oh no, it’s in dub!!!!!!
Before you hate, I’m just being facetious, I’m stoked for the journey
@@LettsReactno problem, I’m just being facetious!
There are a lot of details in this show that are easy to miss watching subtitles!
@@Credemis What does that mean?
It's such a boring show.
Noooooooooooo, dub 😩😩😩😩
They physically cannot watch sub, this channel is always dub only
@
I'm sorry about that, I didn't know
@@natanarubesides dub is great, some shoes have crappy dubs but this one is good.
Ah, come on... dub no 😢
they physically cannot watch subs. This channel will always be dub only
@natanaru what is their excuse? I really doubt they can't, but if it is their personal choice, it is sad but okay I guess 😢
Ah come on. Get over it.
@Ichigoku15 I will, I am just sad that they will lose in most of the best of this show. But I already saw it, so for me it doesn't matter.
Dub is... Well, whatever...
Having watched both dub is just as good.
Aww I really didn’t want english, too bad
There’s like 60,000 sub reactions for this anime. Let those of us who want to actually want to see the reaction instead of reading the entire time have something for once.
@ let me complain. I’m sorry you are bad at reading
Frieren Dub lacks emotion.
You couldn’t have said something more blatantly incorrect if you tried.
It really doesn't. If anything Frieren is voiced with a little bit more emotion in the dub, I've even seen people complain about it.
In japanese pls
I tried to watch this, but it was boring. I would highly recommend the eminence in shadow.
