    I admire your troubleshooting skills and your patience. Another interesting video, thank you. I retired from Trane Canada in 2016 as a field service rep, we were a 90% gas furnace market but did sell a few of the XL20i outdoor units. The plastic Hyperion air handlers were fairly new on the market. The 20i units had two recip compressors and featured “charge assist” as you mentioned. If you had the optional solenoid for your charging cylinder and under the appropriate conditions, you could simply connect your cylinder through the solenoid, charge with liquid, and the unit would shut off the solenoid once charged. I tried it a few times and it worked as advertised. Too bad that unit was so poorly installed.

    The Hyperion Air Handler is a superior product in many ways.... it is metal, NOT plastic. It is just a composite coating... it is a very sophisticated unit when compared to the typical generic air handler. The metering device (EEV) is also a very superior device with the highest efficiency, and also the lowest failure rate of any other type, other than a fixed piston. I am surprised you're not a fan of the equipment.... as you seem to be one of the few techs intelligent enough to understand it. Trane products are absolutely mechanically superior. Not just an opinion, but a statistic. Who better to calculate this than someone who has sold 100s and 100s and 100s of them for over 30 years ? I literally have thousands of them out that I am responsible for. Quick Tip for the sensor situation: just unplug either sensor that is bad, cycle the power, and the system will run in "safe mode" as we all call it, meaning the valve will go to a stable position. (usually about 50%) This is a handy feature for those who don't keep these parts in stock. The low stage was just probably not making much of an impact as it is designed for the mild conditions.... 10 mins later when the high stage compressor came on you had the full tonnage to work with. Those old 2 compressor units were all 50/50... except the 2 ton. Great video, you should have known I of all people would like it !!

    • @HVACRSurvival
      @HVACRSurvival  2 года назад +2

      Thanks Ted! I didn't know that about the thermistor for Trane👍👍. I know Water furnace and Climate master both have that feature👍👍. You noticed I gave them props for easy instructions and you can hear some compliments on the product. My main complaint is having to learn on the fly, no one wants to struggle looking for the info and if you run into problems finding answers isn't easy. To be fair Carrier can be a pain in butt if your supplier doesn't have the answer. Lennox, Waterfurnace and climate master are some of the few that will take your call directly.

So I get sent to the ones closest to our shop. It's not normally a problem on basic units no matter the manufacturer but when you have to read what they're up to it makes it more a pain. Those fluke probes with the retractable guards are amazing. Got similar ones with my 87Ⅴ MAX. Nothing like probing around a board and jumping high voltage across to another component becauseyou lost the guards, yes the work with Fieldpiece DMM's.
    Guys once you go FLUKE you won't go back, LOL. That 87 can see a voltage/amperage spikes that you didn't even know happened, you wil find shorts that no one else can see. Reads amperage on the optional clamp down to around 0.2 amps, with this you can quickly find high amperage components low voltage circuits. It has bailed me out so many times. Averages out amp and voltage readings you have a solid number to note. Can read proper voltage at the motor end of a VFD by filtering out the spikes and the ringing that can occur on long runs to the motor. It doesn't read 0.0 like FP DMM's while it auto ranges (that will kill you). Its ability to read peak, peak to peak gives me an idea of weather I need to go back for my for my O-scope on a bus. I'm never on a roof without my 87.

    Just chiming in a year later because this came up in my feed again.
    The indoor coil sensors have nothing to do with heat pump operation. The outdoor eev and low side pressure transducer and low side thermistor mounted by the compressor drive the eev through an outdoor eev board.
    In cooling mode if you get an indoor coil sensor failure you can unplug both the sensors and it will drive the eev to contingency mode and cool fairly well until you get back ( unless the eev has failed or the strainer is clogged with crud)
    I've worked for Trane Comfort Specialists for 20 plus years, and I can imagine what it must be like to walk up to one of these or a TAM9 with an XV20 variable speed compressor and you don't have the literature. YIKES... I find Trane to actually be very sensible and easy to diagnose once you understand the flow ,the system testing capabilities off the thermostat and you HAVE ACCESS TO THE SERVICE FACTS,and they're just as reliable as anyone else out there if not more,and we all know what that means. Great video!!!!!

      Thanks man! It's no more high tech than a Carrier Infinity. Just like you said, if you haven't seen it before 😲 but if you know the sequence of operation it's going to be easier

    Back probe lol, sounds like an alien encounter. Also, I’m not a fan of those GAM and TAM Trane units at all. In Florida in 2022 there was such a shortage of the EEV drive boards that Trane came out with a “work around”, which involve three earth magnets and manually opening the EEV. York makes an EEV magnet that is designed to manually open and close the EEV for brazing purposes to flow nitrogen

    Agreed the best equipment installed like $hit, gives you a big pile of $shit.... I'm a trane dealer, they have their issues same as others. The ONLY reason I continue to sell 'em is that Hyperion air handler. its not perfect however its defiantly a major step in the right direction. I've had lots of issues with thermistors on the early TAM7's..

    What do you think I haven’t done residential in years

      I haven't ever seen that in residential AC equipment, at the most I've seen is a liquid solenoid to stop flow on shut down.

      Most importantly is one that is installed correctly with pride. I like Carrier Infinity series the most until they are out of the 10 year warranty but even they can have some small problems. Rheem is ok, so is Lennox but they all have something about them that someone won't like. People like working on what they know best.

      Most of my experience is on Lennox and Carrier but the majority is on Lennox. I'm not a Lennox fan any more ... all this equipment is garbage anymore. However Carrier Infinity has some pretty nice stuff. Believe it or not I have almost no problems out of the cheap Ducane equipment. Most of it boils down to technical support from the factory, good engineering and proper installation, if you miss any of those items, everything's going to be a disaster no matter what brand.

    • @ianpalmer1482
