For your information, grounded compressors can also cause the condenser fan motor to run lower speed because it back feeds thru the compressor when not running.

That drain line connection made me laugh out loud when i seen that. I knew instantly they hooked to the wrong taps for the drain. I guess that manual that comes with it is only visible to a tech. Another great video Rick.....save the day......again.

What I like to do when brazing in a new compressor is that if I can't purge whilst brazing then at least I try to push the air out with some nitrogen so that when I braze there's only minimum air left inside the circuit.

I have become convinced that 90% of labor for a new install was standing in front of a Home Depot that morning.
Edit: I posted this before you pulled the drawing. : I have that same indoor unit in my house. That drain the hooked up is for a vertical install, the lower drain that they didn’t connect to is for a horizontal install. 😮 I could have don’t a better install and I just watch RUclips videos.

At 2:21 the most common mistake AC installers make. Improper trap venting. plumbing 101 the back side of the trap is vented. That $1.00 mistake is the main reason many customer's ceilings fall in. It's amazing over 90% of HVAC guys don't understand Venting basics, especially when Venting is the V in HVAC
A former manager once told us : it's a brand new unit it doesn't just break down !

Well, I'm sure installing it wrong didn't help, nor not using nitrogen as you saw. But yeah.
If nitrogen were expensive, I could understand why more people would do the wrong thing and not use it. However, nitrogen in general is cheap! I keep three tanks in rotation so I will always have nitrogen available during the busy months.
I am technically trained and oriented, but I never understand more than one item out of 20 in your presentations. A lot of specialized knowledge needed. Good going.

I don’t need the work bad enough to work on the competition’s qwappy installs. Hang a wet towel over your 410a recovery jug to cool it off a little bit or ice water over it helps to. Install a suction drier on all compressor changeouts, if room allows.

Because the capacitor was so hot to the touch when the bad compressor was hooked up, I would have replaced it even though it still worked. Heat is bad for caps, and the heat probably weakened it. It's a cheap part so I would have swapped it for piece of mind.

the drains were redone at the 20:20 mark and they cut the new drains in below the traps and straight piped lol. now they arent trapped at all.

Trane has a problem with DOA equipment. I have installed Trane for 35 years and never seen the number of DOA's that I have in the past 2 years.
Came across a Carrier air handler one time installed counterflow but the slab coil was still in the upflow configuration…coil should have been flipped with an accessory drain pan installed. Unit had been working for several days and the condensate dripped through the control box and strip heaters and filled the ductwork underneath. I was amazed to see water dripping off the wires and relays in the control box yet the unit was still running! Good work.
Suspect it was factory terminated wrong and running backwards. The fan spinning means it grounded out and was feeding from the other leg through the ground fault.
I should have checked the resistance to ground but it was bad either way so I skipped it. Good call 👍👍
I wonder if that fault only happened after it locked up. Sounded at least at first to be a mechanical failure, not a grounded one.

My Trane Weathertron is 32 years old. Only ever changed the blower motor..
I will never replace that unit with a new one. Never. I’ll just keep patching it up if it ever breaks.
I don't understand why fellow technicians don't like Trane. Can only speak to the residential side but they have easily accessible documentation along with Mitsubishi.
As a fellow HVAC tech. I dislike them mostly because if quality control issues, OEM specific parts that they don’t have. They will with a straight face tell you we don’t have any and don’t know when we will have some. 😮 what???

Trane is like the apple of the industry - let's do things our own way and proprietary. Some things I like, others are just.....why? That air handler is just terrible.

I just went on site where someone did a beautiful job of installing 3, multi zone mini splits with casettes, wall units and about 4 slim ducts. Too bad the slim ducts were upside down. That was a lot of work to fix that- they had to be disconnected completely, all duct work, plenums, and rehung and then the lines were too short, the wire was too short, the duct work didn't reach in some cases, and luckily they worked when they were installed right. I was worried they would be toast- but they worked.

Always use Nitrogen 🙂. You don't have to keep the purge running the whole time. Just purge, turn it off and braze the compressor in.
I've seen guys keep a light flow of nitrogen after purging with it to prevent oxygen from getting inside while brazing. My teacher says the same too. I would imagine oxygen wouldn't go in if you kept your hose connected to prevent natural airflow, but who knows
We had lot of issues with trane's roof top units recently
New ones? I'd expect that with there "through the floor" production standards these days. There RTU'S are back ordered through next year. They haven't been right since the rona.

I use the same brazing tip for small copper. I helped a guy install two evaporators on a blast chiller at Kroger, I had about eight brazes. He goes what in the hell is that? I said take out your phone and start your timer. I did them all in under 30 seconds, shit looked like it was done at the factory. I wish they made a tip like that for mapp gas.

I love the torch set up you have, can you ( or someone) recommend this setup for me? I have a “turbo torch” with an acetylene tank, it works but it’s kinda wild sometimes. Thanks
It's just a regular oxy acetylene torch set. If you want to get the whole set so that everything fits easily together I would go with the uni-weld brand. Originally this was a Victor but I had to change the handle to make the tips fit
Hello Rick, I'm need some Schrader valves on my r-22 ac, would they be 1/4", I have a core tool, using brass cap now but sniffer shows leaky on low side. Going to order usa bestec ones just making sure 1/4" 20 yr old heil ICP HP, Thank you.
They're the same thing they use in your car tire. I'm not sure what the real size is. They are all the same Schrader core for both the 1/4 and 5/16 systems.
Anyone with a molecule of common sense should've known how those drains were to be installed! Unreal!!!

@@HVACRSurvival I just ordered one. Don’t encounter brazed copper or aluminum lines too often working on our analytical science equipment since it’s mostly 316 stainless, or nickel plated, but it’s too cool not to have one lol.
The compressor is just free wheeling. The clutch is broken, and the rotary scroll is not turning to compress the refrigerant. I wonder if it was over charged, and it slugged and damaged the compressor. The scroll compressors are not immune to liquid slugging. I have seen many damaged due to over charging.
Factory charge was 5 lb I only pulled out 4.4.
What a bonehead thing to do,run those drains like that...😂😂😂😂 Strong unsupervised apprentice vibes.

I’m sure by now you have seen the Trane S series gas furnace, loads of stupidity in that design. The big thing is it’s a 33” tall furnace, but the way the blower compartment is designed your return opening is something like 15x16, if you are over 3 tons or a certain BTU of heat you require a furnace support box which if you use the Trane box brings you right back to 40” tall 🤦♂️

I have a good question for you mind you ...the unit is already dead but curiosity is nagging me.
4 ton r410 non heat pump. Ran EXCELLENT for 3 years in the worst of Texas heat and would cool the house down to the low 60s if you wanted. The downside....the unit sounded like it had rocks in it....I mean it was loud. Pressures tested great.

If the compressor is not in warranty cut it open and find out would be the best way. Otherwise the factory would have asked for all the important information not just pressures. Oat, indoor air temp, amp draw, voltage, superheat, sub cooling, verify wiring was correct, checking the resistance of the windings, meg the compressor to ground.

Definitely need to use nitrogen. Inside of that copper is completely trashed without it. Basically looks just like the outside does after brazing, with some charred oil to boot.
I agree... that's why I use it everywhere else, I should have purged through the compressor first. It really doesn't matter how good I do there's always someone going to find something wrong.
@@HVACRSurvival I wasn't harping on you, just agreeing with your comment that it seems the whole install might have been done without nitrogen. And that people often underestimate the importance of it during commissioning. At this point, you not using nitrogen for those repair 2 joints isn't really changing anything (that oil was already full of soot and particles that ejected).
but only where you braze- and depending on where- you can flush it out with water, solvent, followed by nitrogen and pumping it down.. I always do a flush regardless of whether I braze with nitrogen or not. 99% of the time I do, but if you can't for some reason- flush it with solvent or whatever and nitrogen and its fine. Its when you do nothing that you run into problems---It doesn't matter what the inside of the tube looks like- the problem is that stuff comes off like a powder and will clog up the expansion valve---esp the electroninc ones. So--make sure you use nitrogen, and if that isn't possible---flush after brazing.
Hello! Why do you need a station with four valves if you vacuum correctly through a separate hose?
I use to have the older Testo 557 and 550. The 550 were bad about resetting themselves back to zero and atmospheric pressure changes. So instead of taking a chance, I got the Testo 557 even though I seldomly ever used the fourth hose. Good question.

So I'm thinking, which one to buy 550s or 557s? Is vacuuming much faster on the line than through the station? If it is much faster, then four valves are not needed, so it turns out.@@HVACRSurvival
I did a video testing out my blue hoses at least two years back and it’s tremendously faster. That’s why I don’t usually pull through my manifold. I have the older 550s and they work OK but I don’t like them as well as the newer 557.

You just complained about not using Nitrogen when brazing and right before that you brazed the compressor without it...........IM CONFUSED
What I was getting at is sometimes you create more problems than what you're saving. There's a difference between doing a two braze joint repair versus running a line set with multiple joints being brazed. Plus the amount of heat you put on the joint also dictates how much carbon you get. If you looked at that coupling I showed in the beginning that thing was dark black they overheated it extremely. To make the video short I cut all that information out.
@@HVACRSurvival I gotcha bud. You really know your stuff. Funny how BAD some installs are. I’m an electrician by trade but I geek out on the ductless. I installed my 6 zone system at my house a couple years back. 6 zones 24 flares and not one leak. I installed everything to spec. Recorded extra line set length and had a guy pressure test, evacuate and add 410A where necessary. They are the future. I always recommend them to anyone who’s looking it switch away from fuel.

It’s made out of about an inch diameter stainless steel tubing, cut into a 45 made into an angle then a piece of flat stock stainless steel made into a sea shape. Then it’s welded together. Email me and I’ll send you some pictures HVACRsurvival@Gmail.
Its PROBLEMS---(FYI)--not promblems. I replace a lot of units every year---at least 50. And- Trane often has no inventory so I have had to use in some cases what I could get- ICP, Rheem/RUUD, goodman, whatever. Of all- I have had the MOST problems with trane---when I say problem, I mean leaks, no freon due to a bad joint and it leaked out, wiring issues, and so on- right out of the gate. They are really good about reimbursing you 400$, but of all the units, I had one Rheem that had a problem, and about 4 Tranes. No other issues with anything else. Not even mini splits. HAving said that- this is a case where someone said "I have a great AC Guy" because he came out and changed a capacitor for 100$, and so that made him great. He is obviously clueless and has no business working on his own. I ran into a guy recently who contacted me for help when he was installing a condenser and had some problems. I asked him when I could tell he was in way over his head, "what are you charging for this"----ANSWER: 150$. so there are a whole bunch of people who think they are "ready" and know everything, and then get into big trouble as in the case of this install. Great video for several reasons---one of which exposes the guys who just are not ready to be on their own and also issues with new Trane products of late.

One of my parents’ 1993 Trane XE1000 compressor blew out the terminals when it was 20 years old and they replaced the condense unit. It lived a good life.

What air conditioners do you recommend?
The problem is people don't care, so it really doesn't matter as much on who makes it....but the brand we sell is Carrier, generally, they're pretty good, but they're not perfect. Reems OK, all of them have their good models and they're crappy models. it's really a shot in the dark. It depends on the model level that you're looking at, they make good better and best or basically you could think of it as good enough, probably will work and probably not gonna work.

Why all service tech always complain about their work, we installers get constantly f upped by the sales people and yet we tend to make it work until the service guy shows up to ruin the day.
Because installers have a blueprint....its called a manual.....and yall still mess things up. If you let the salesman dictate how your installation is gonna go.....you are doomed and destined for failures. You as installers are the people who should be following proper practices.....let the salesman get yelled at for not knowing what they are doing. A callback costs a company a lot of money. At the least....let your manager know that the salesman screwed up...what should i do....get it off your plate....and into the gands of the person who made the s**t sandwich in the first place.

You go out to a job that was supposed to be installed correctly and the people that installed it were paid to do it correctly and I should be cheerful and excited to redo the job the correct way? That makes absolutely no sense. I'm not a robot and I actually think for myself which is why I get upset because this was a waste of time. Common Sense tells you the drains are going to be at the lowest point. 🤦🏻
Newbie here, why is it ok to braze the compressor without nitrogen?
I would purge with nitrogen to displace the oxygen and kill the nitrogen purge and have my gauges open to atmosphere. I would then braze the joints. Any residual nitrogen would warm and expand. No oxygenation would happen. Keeping nitrogen running would blow your weld out and you would have to reweld the joint. How do I know, been there.
@Johnny you could Purge it with nitrogen then kill it just like amarillohome said. When you get in the real world and start running calls you're going to find out almost half the people don't even run nitrogen if not probably 75% of them. Most of the people on RUclips are some of the very few that actually care about what they're doing, generally most people you work with aren't going to give a shit about doing things the right way they're just there for a paycheck and want to go home.
Cannot flow nitrogen through the compressor, so you do it the way it was done here to avoid the blowout described here
