- I would say most of the seasonal backgrounds in osu! cater towards a certain kind of people… and it's kind of seductive. But it’s not only the backgrounds on the star screen, but also the abhorrent beatmap backgrounds. Considering that most of the player base is younger than the game, isn't it kind of weird how accessible and widespread this type of art is? Also if you were new to osu! Wouldn’t you feel awkward or embarrassed if someone saw you viewing this? These things give osu! a negative reuptation.

I have been playing osu since April 2022 and am around the game's age myself (therefore, I still attend school). I first picked the game up after seeing a few videos of it on YT, and from what I saw it looked pretty harmless. Upon starting to play, there wasn't immediately anything eye-catching about it other than the occasional anime-like backgrounds on some songs.
Because I came to osu from FNF (and given the standard two mania songs), I had to go to the website to get more mania maps. This is when things started going downhill - most of the backgrounds for recently ranked mania maps were, in my opinion at the time, unnecessary. However, I was still eager to get into the osu!mania experience, and so I went ahead and downloaded whatever songs looked good. The ones that seemed both easy and innocent.
Fast forward a couple months, it's now summer of 2022. You might be able to tell where this is going. I didn't know at the time that there was an option to disable the seasonal backgrounds, but I was smart enough to at least dim the song backgrounds completely. Despite all that, I was still "into" osu and could reasonably ignore whatever things I didn't need to see too much of - after all, I came to osu for the gameplay.
Around August 2022 (when school started for me) I realized I was going to have some conflicts. I couldn't resist pulling out the computer in class, and because it was still considered summer, I had to constantly keep my brightness low, which worsened my progression.
Some of the real trouble came around November, when a few of my friends dared me to ask to play on the class projector. Surprisingly, the teacher whose class we were in accepted and allowed me to demonstrate the skill I had gained, in front of the whole class. When time came, there was one problem. I'd had many more anime backgrounds than before at the time, with only a few that I would (then and now) deem acceptable for showing a whole class. I got lucky with osu's autoplay that time around, and proceeded to record a video of what I had done in class that day.
A few weeks later, the same thing. I went to the teacher and asked for another, possibly longer session of what I had done before, and with some scheduling, we managed to get another day in before semester exams rolled around. This time, I had a trick up my sleeve. *In the game's title screen, you can go to the "now playing" section and choose from there what song you want, and from that the map that you are led to.* I was able to avoid any bad luck the second time around, and got another recording of me playing osu!mania for class.
After finals came, I had to drop the gaming and actually study, and it took me months to get back into it.
As of now (1/15/2024), I am back into osu, and have not gotten walked in on with anything too suspicious on-screen. I found a skin that doesn't have any "extra art" in it, and more of my choice maps are actually decent in terms of showing others.

I showed my little cousin osu! (he is 11) he found the game fun to play so I was very happy to finally have found a fellow osu enjoyer. After playing for a while I had to go to my mom for something and I left him alone for a minute to play osu! and when I came back I saw him staring at albedo from voracity mapset and I just stood behind him for minutes to confirm what he was doing and he was staring daggers at her soon his sister who is my elder cousin walked in and I got a beating of a lifetime for humiliating my family in a family dinner (I am asian). I had a script to auto delete beatmap backgrounds back when I played and always had background brightness at 0% before that.

@@havyn88 A lot of backgrounds aren't just "someone in a bikini on a beach", they're straight up lascivious and I didn't really want that on my screen when I lived at my parents' (or whenever I tried to show the game to someone for that matter).
i started playing osu when i was 11 ( i'm now 18 ) , and had the same situation with the your mom&sister but with my uncle. when i was 12/13 I had the despacito map on and he walked in and just said "wow, nice taste" and then told my aunt about the bg with very detailed information.
that day i learned a valuable lesson.

This also reminded me of Halloween 2022 where an artwork was banned for being "too scary" to qualify because of how the face looked. I don't know why they banned this when a decent amount of the submissions that win these contents show more skin than needed. Even with that, most of the characters depicted are female, with barely any men in them.

Quick tip for yall - whenever you hear someone come in and you don't want osu on your screen - press "insert"
It instantly closes the game, but you can still access it in the taskbar on the bottom right whenever you're safe again lol

Fun fact: this type of key is called a "boss key" and was originally used to very quickly hide what you were doing and showing something that would make it seem like you were working or being productive instead of playing games

I'm one of the few lucky people who, don't care what other see what art I look at, and have a family who also don't care what art I look at.
I play osu, they walk in, see the lewd background, and proceed to ignore it and just talk to me like normal, no questioning at all, no disgusted whispers, sometimes they even look at them with me 👍
Sadly not everyone is like us, so I do hope we get the option to not have background images in map selec for those other individuals.

I've played osu since around 2020 and i've always been hoping they'd add a "disable all backgrounds" option , like yeah u can disable the season bgs and dim the bg in game but most of the time you're scrolling through maps and theres nothing u can do about that and its so annoying

Agree, my friends calling osu anime game, when gameplay have nothing to do with anime is kinda bad. If osu had less of those unnecessary anime pictures, I think more players would try it out just for fun.

The only reason i started playing osu when i was 13 is big anime tiddy and beatiful feet. I play without background dim,i am 6 digit and enjoy the game(art)
one time i installed osu because a friend of mine recommend me, i then spent 30 minutes trying to figure out how to turn off those backgrounds, didn't figure it out then uninstalled the game☠️
I see younger people mentioned a lot here, but I can tell you this goes the other way too. As a mid 30s guy, I'm embarassed by even the thought of showing the game to friends coming over, exactly because of all the sexualized backgrounds. I wish there was more moderation of backgrounds, or some way to toggle not showing NSFW backgrounds, and keeping the rest visible. Even requiring SFW alternative backgrounds would be a welcome change to the game.

I never thought that the background of OSU! and beatmap that way before. I love anime and anime-type drawings in general that I didn't think of it as weird or inappropriate until watching this video. I will never see this game I have been playing for years the same way ever again :(

I used to delete all my beatmap backgrounds so I could play. Back in the day, I used to have to play in my living room. There was absolutely no way I was going to chance any background like that from being seen. It did make finding obscure songs difficult, but it be like it do.

i just disable seasonal BG's and have a collection of maps with perfectly normal backgrounds to make sure i dont get questioned, that's if i hear footsteps or if someone knocks.

i use whitecat's old V2 skin mostly because its clean gameplay but also because it passes the parents walking in test.

I've eventually just deleted all the maps with bad backgrounds. Thankfully most good maps aren't sexualised and are fine

Yeah, I don't even play osu, but aside from some of the seasonal backgrounds, most of these look completely normal
this is kind of a subpart of my problem with osu!. Ive always seen osu as a perfect game due to the right amount of simplicity to play. Not being as simple as mania for example (which i also still find fun) but not as complex as for example multiplayer games, which contain a lot more random factors to possibly ruin your fun. This is is why ive always found it quite annoying how its catered towards 'anime fans' for no particualr reason. Other than the fact that it's baed on a japanese rhythm game and that rhythm games are maybe most popular in asia or something? idk. But I feel like it should be more catered towards the simplicity and competitive aspects of the game. This would result in a broader playerbase, a more diverse mappool and make it less stigmatised. btw I like anime, and understand that game needs a theme. But at least try to not stray away from a broad accesibility.

i love osu! and anime like a lot but the community is VERY hit or miss for me. on one end you have awesome chill ass people that you can vibe with in mutis, and on the other end you have degenerates of the highest order thinking the age of consent is too high... the osu! community could not be more of an oxymoron if it tried.

i am young (i dont wanna say my age) and i play osu!, my cousin has went through this experience unlike me. tip: idk if you know rrtyui, but he had a BAT script that replaces all of your backgrounds with a gray one. if you want to change all of it, just run the script and done. it's a cool tip if you don't tolerate this degeneracy

I guess we need an ingame option to turn on/off backgrounds marked as explicit content or idk
osu!cleaner has an option to delete all beatmap backgrounds. I occasionally will do this (as well as deleting the maps from other gamemodes I don't play) and it actually frees up a lot of space... Also then you don't have to look at the fullscreen image of some of these sus anime girl pics (you will still see the thumbnails in the song select, but that background will be blank)

not gonna comment on the beach bg art contest, as i still don't quite understand why it was a thing; there's an odd correlation between maps with horny bgs and jump-spam maps, especially jump-spam maps by sotarks from his lowest effort pp mapping era
all in all i don't really get it why people care about these bgs that much, it's not like people suddenly turn into these lusty hormone monsters when they turn 18, the core audience being in their teen years is exactly the reason why they choose these bgs, cuz that's how puberty works; and people wondering about this feel like hypocrites or robots who never experienced growing up
When I first installed osu! I got plastered with the beach backgrounds, yet I wasn't effected by it. I'm not an advid anime viewer (I do understand that a beach episode is meant for fanservice and I get that's what the event was basically nodding at). I enjoy seasonal backgrounds as they remove the bland atmosphere of the screen. Not because I was a cum demon, my brain shuts off any idea of attraction at all knowing that the character on the other end is most likely 15-16 lol.

Search rrytui grey background. You can download a program that will turn all beatmaps into a grey bg
You can make your custom bg in your skin that will be shown instead of every map bg. I don't know how to do it step by step, but you can try to search information yourself.

there is a mod that does that. All your bg would be deleted everytime you download new map(existin maps bg would get deleted too)
