Just a minor correction 1:51: WhiteCat held the #1 spot for 550 days consecutively! The image shows that he beat Cookiezi's record spent on the number one spot which was 455 days!
The thing i enjoy isnt the map the scores are set on or the numbers alone. its watching players hit a milestone and seeing how far they reach. Thats why i still watch the 500th score on dear brave. Or the 70th 1.1k on dawn of dragonstar. Just so i can see the progression of players climbing up the ranks.
may i blame the mapping scene partially for making genuinely good maps unrankable and then ranking basically the same maps like over and over, used to be 1-2 now is 270bpm speed maps. maybe tournaments will be the main hype and 'ranking' method in the future
I mean it depends, I honestly hate the current system that just ranks utter garbage that no one wants to play. But at the same time they are trying to be diverse because of the amount of jump and speed/stream maps there are. "Tournament maps" which I'm assuming you mean consistency could be a better way to map and rank future maps but we just have to wait and see.
I don't think that what's happening is new or bad. ever since the pp system was introduced this began to happen. more people got more and better scores, and what was impressive one day, became the norm the next day. when the highest scores were 700pp, no one cared about 400pp plays. when the highest plays became 1K's, no one cares about 700pp plays. when the norm will become 1,600pp plays, no one will care about mrekk's current best scores. and the pp system always wasn't imperfect, people always missed low-pp high-skill plays. the only thing that changed is that there are more scores and people in general, so it becomes harder to find impressive scores by any means other than pp. but that's just a product of the games popularity, and I don't think many would say that this is bad. players should not listen to people saying what score is impressive and which is not to find motivation or self satisfaction. people should strive to improve compared to themselves and their close competitors.
I think this kind of desensitization happens frequently in any form of competition. To a player, they’re looking at the thinnest hole of the funnel. But that doesn’t mean it’s the only funnel to see. For example, I like seeing total ranked score and clear leaderboards since they show dedication. There’s also people that can do different types of techniques and reading such as Ekoro’s non-breath oblige or -GN’s Unforgiving in FL. You can even go far to say of noodleshredder’s 10k d ranked scores being impactful. In a way, I go about talking PP in different views. Performance Points are what we use to calculate how well we do. Peak Performance is the expectation we see looking at others. Personal Performance is how we see ourselves. I do think sometimes we need to consider that the PP we’re looking at isn’t the PP that we always need to boost ourselves.
I don't like how the scores are fulled with DT most of the time i like some varity of mod combination like HR or EZ to watch as i enjoy playing EZ myself so the problem doesn't lay with the PP for me its the mods
i think a bigger problem is that we are seeing scoreposts and cpol uploads for like, the 20th person fcing the same flow farm map (lion heart, glory days, etc). Yes i understand its like 1kpp or whatever but im sorry after the first 5 people fc'd Maki's Extra +HDDT I dont care about the next 15. We are kind of at the point almost where scoreposts and cpol videos for 1ks should probably only be unique plays kind of like how we can see some really low-pp (for today's standards) plays like non-breath getting attention because its the first FC after a long time of being ranked.
dude if RyuK got 1100pp or 1200pp that would be so fuckin hype ngl since hes prob my biggest inspo to play osu! (hr player). Also I think the "impressiveness" of the play is entirely subjective and depends alot on the map, and the player who set it. We all know Mrekk and Gnahus can easily shit out 1100-1200pp, but we have yet to see shige, BMC, RyuK, and many others reach these pp milestones. The community would go wild if BMC set 1k ofc.
This video is genuinely true. I feel like most of the top players scores are uninteresting to most people because of the pp amount and the reason for that is because the eyes of the community is mostly on the top 10 so people wouldn't go out of their way to watch a 3 digit score even though that person is probably 50 time better than them when they could go and watch another top play set a 1.2k like it's nothing
yeah thats fr. i remember when the first aim nerf came out during whitecat's n1 era and his 1100's became low-medium 1ks. back then any other 1k seemed so crazy especially when mrekk started cranking them out and him getting an 1100 on dear brave was so mind boggling to me. now i literally shrug my shoulders at a 1200pp play its so wacky
I think it depends on which player ur keen on and if ur excited about a score from them. Like I still find (for example) Freddie Benson's #1 wizard tower impressive cuz he's someone I look forward to see play the game
I like unique scores with maps that require weird skill sets (aka ones that arent overweighted) At most I get desensitized to farm scores because it's tiring to watch the same type of map being played to oblivion. I find idke's hr fcs more impressive than most 1k+ hddt flow aim map plays nowadays.
i get your point when you say that people are desensitized from lower pp scores but it doesn't really make sense to show worst hr player scores since those are super popular on cpol
Nowadays I don't care if someone sets a 700pp play, but when cookiezi set the first one it was hype. The game is moving on and I personally don't think this is some kind of desensition, just standard progression...
I mean I don't care about my top plays, I don't think they're reflective of my skill as a player. I wonder if akolibed feels the same like compared to some of his other scores the play that just happens to be 1700pp is feels samey to the 1500s, it's just the system says big number
i feel like you're missing one key point though on how to get rid of this mindset: context. give anyone the current circumstances the player is in and most people would admire the scores for even the lower ranked players, it's why we can be impressed by friends getting lower pp scores as well as up and coming players with their scores and even top player's scores
Imo if its just "meta" farming then yea its boring, like its impressive but why tf would I wanna watch another mrekk 1k dt score when he did 10 other ones that week? I wanna see interesting scores that people spend loads of time training for and finally getting that fc. Not saying those players that just abuse dt meta dont try but lets be honest if it was insanely hard for top players to do ar11 dt on 1 min maps why are they uploaded so often? Its like seeing a pro player on a game wipe a whole team like yea its cool but its expected so its not as impressive as a lower end player doing the same cus its just another day for the pro but its a damn achievement for the lower end player
To be fair, I just don't even watch scores anyways, maybe if it's on a map on which I have personal goals but otherwise, osu! had become extremely boring. The metas, overweighted (yes, I think 1.7-1.5k stream only are highly overweighted) plays, just ends up in the conclusion that pp is just a number, much like grades or any rating for that matter, it's just of how much you can abuse a system in a specific aspect. Compared to back then, people mostly play for skill and achievements, but all the fun part of the community is gone. Perhaps the part where this game was a cool rhythm game with a weeb community is gone and it's just time to accept it.
Stop playing, if you think osu is boring or not fun anymore, play other games, play mania or maybe try out taiko or even ctb, and then come back when you miss it, at the end of the day osu is just a game, and its for you to decide how to enjoy it. Me personally i was so burnt out in 2021 when i hit 5k ranks on mania 4k that i just started playing 7k and taiko instead, my enjoyments of the game tremendously improve and i can see myself having more fun than i used to, in 2022 my pc died so i didnt play osu for over a year, and now fast forward to 2024 and im now a 4 digits in 7k and just went back to 4k recently and managed to set a new top play, and i still am enjoying the game albeit not as high rank as i used to be (7k# now). Also people back then and now arent exactly that different, top players are abusing the jump metas like crazy, nowadays its flow aim high bpm streams, when Mathi hits #1 people were harassing him for doing it with ""overweighted jump maps"", back then all that harassment made him enjoy the game less and less, and we can still see people doing the exact same things nowadays too, so the arguments about abusing metas has been going on since forever, people back then also said the same thing youre saying right now (pp is just a number, overweighted, not unique, another "insert metas" abuser) and its not gonna get better cause the pp system isnt perfect, people will complain no matter what. The statements "people play for skills and achievements back then" is really weird ngl, that implies player are not breaking skill levels and achieving greater heights than ever before, players nowadays are going above and beyond to grind their skill levels and achievements, maybe like the video said, youre just desentized to higher pp plays or scores in general that you forgot that a lot of the score that are set these days are not possible pre 2019 or even in 2019, i mean cmon, SD +HDDT, mrekk Anoyo 1.8k pp choke, thats just wild just to name a few, i know scores like these are few and far in between, but having scores like that just contradicts your whole statement about "people playing for skills and achievements back then", maybe youre not talking about 2019, but im just using it cause the 1st 1k was set in 2019, even 900 and 800 were still considered rare enough. As a sidenote, 90% of the time i only play solo and not interact with the community whatsover, so thats gotta be one of the few reasons im still enjoying the game till this day (2017 player btw, i play standard till 2021 and then switch to mania) Sorry for going on a tangent, if you dont bother to read it, thats fine, tl;dr : "just enjoy game"
I mean people do still play for fun. See the tournament scene which is bigger than ever. It's just the top level is kind of ridiculous at the moment to the point where it kind of fries your brain. I agree the fun is lesser and it feels more like an esport than a chill game, but that's legitimately just because people are too good. Most of the fun was because a lot of us sucked honestly. Or well it feels that way to me. People absolutely cared about pp, it's just there was more to discover outside of it before. Things are very optimized by comparison these days. See how basically everyone can do 260bpm streams.
