As a Belgian I can tell you Jenever is still quite popular in the Low Countries. These days a lot of the younger folk go for the flavoured stuff of course, but jenevermarkets are still a regular thing (pre-Covid of course) and everyone will drink this at Christmas markets as well.
as a Dutchman living in zuid-holland, i've been told by the local supermarket slijterij clerk, the local Polish prefer jenever over vodka these days, appearing like it's coming back in style with some people :D
Fascinating explanation of orris root. I had no idea! I attended a gin tasting, and the Zuidam Korenwijn Genever 5y was a standout. Distilled from corn, rye, and malted barley in a pot still. It was a gin for whisky lovers!
Jenever is made from a jeneverbes a sort of berry but the jenever isnt really sweet in the netherlands try a kopstootje ( headbut ) its a shot of jenever and than a full glass of beer
New Zealand? Either you mean Zeeland (a province in the Netherlands) or you were served the wrong stuff actually made in New Zealand (which obviously was named after the Dutch province). The Dutch have a wealth of jenever types (young, old, "korenwijn" by many many local and larger distillers). In all honesty the Belgium are even a greater nation of jenever producers (and drinkers) - I once visited a pub in Antwerpen which had over 200 different jenevers on its list. And let's not forget that traditionally jenever was stored and sold in stone bottles, not glass. Many are still sold in them.
Lol @ Geneva ;) It is jenever or genever in Dutch and NOT named after the old Swiss city of Geneva :) Drinking it from a glass like you both use is like a HUGE sin over here hahaha omg . Google jeneverglas ;) Many times when we go to a bar here in the Netherlands we will have a kopstootje... Translated as a headbutt... Its a glass of jenever drinking it at once followed by beer. :) And although Gin is a Dutch invention too its NOT tasting simulair to jenever Come on... They dont even have the slightest of simulair taste... I mean.. Nobody would mix jenever with tonic over here. That would mean a death sentence :) You should try REAL Dutch jenever brands like... Bols, Hooghoudt, Ketel, Bokma, Floryn and Harteveld.. Those are the REAL jenevers we drink here in the Netherlands.
@@TheSingleMaltReview and then do i NEW review again... But.. We have old and new jenever here.. Theyre really different tastes.... And in this video you can see the REAL jenever glass and the kopstootje drink :) ruclips.net/video/IYOdRsvI7rk/видео.html

Also we would never ever add tonic to jenever.

jeneverbes = juniper berry.
Try BARAK51 Genever !
Is it possible to buy this somewhere?
This one in particular probably doesn't exist outside of New Zealand, sadly.
@@TheSingleMaltReview I live in New Zealand 😃😃
@@mraue Well then, have a search around for Concept Bespoke Distilling and you might just find it.
There are online stores in the netherlands and belgium where you have a wide range of Genever-Jenever.

Updated to correct spelling. I'm certain I've seen Bol's down here from time to time, so I'll see if I can get hold of some.

For your (export) market you might find it easier to source De Borgen or Old Duff
