- The opening track of Elton John's 1973 album "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road," recorded in France. Elton had written the instrumental piece (where the piano starts), then synthesizer engineer David Hentschel wrote and recorded the opening segment using chords and melodies from several of the album's songs, mainly "I've Seen That Movie too," "Ballad of Danny Bailey" and "Candle in the Wind." Producer Gus Dudgeon fused the whole piece with "Love Lies Bleeding," which was originally a separate song, and Elton loved it. Elton then wrote the instrumental segue. He has opened many concerts with this song ever since.
Elton John - Piano, Vocals
Davey Johnstone - Electric Guitars, Backing Vocals
Dee Murray - Bass, Backing Vocals
Nigel Olsson - Drums, Backing Vocals
David Hentschel - A.R.P. Synthesizer
Produced by Gus Dudgeon
Words & Music by Elton John & Bernie Taupin

Saw Elton in the late 80's at Madison Square Garden and he opened with this. Still one of the best songs I've ever seen performed live by any artist.
saw him at the garden in the late 70s and he opened with this too. in complete darkness.
Used to listen to this on my week-end trips from L.A. to Laguna Beach on the freeway with moon-roof and full blast...What times those were...Now I'm only 62 yrs. young! Luv this song!
My family rented a beach house last week where I found a record player and some records. And that’s when I discovered this masterpiece.
Good for you man!!!!
Karma smiles on you. Keep giving the world your great vibe. This treasure your were given is a magnificent gift. Carry it on.
How cool great album! I've been a Elton John fan since the 60s
I was 16, heard it live my first time at the Meadowlands in NJ when he toured with Billy Joel. I was pretty blown away.
How cool are u @Paige Heartly. :)
I have requested that this be the opening song at my Celebration of Life ceremony!!!❤️
I got this album as a Christmas gift when it came out..Throughout my life in foster homes/ group homes this is the only thing I managed to hang onto, most of the things I had were stolen when another kid was transferred, when I wasn't at the house...I played this album as often as I could and can still sing all of the songs by heart...Music was always a powerful thing in my life and it saved my sanity and helped me hold onto my humanity despite the horrible situations I found myself in.
+Keith T Glad you made it through those hard times. Hope you are enjoying life now! Take care
+Keith T In my early 50's now, I have been there and in the last 20 years I live life to the fullest.
This was my very first Elton album. Still in my top five of his.
I tend to not trust people on the internet but if that's true, God bless ya you good Human Being and have as much faith as possible that I don't and hang on a very long time.
Keith T Your pain and hardships are also a blessing. You are a true SURVIVOR. And moreover have not let life make you bitter and mean. Your past has prepared you to weather the ups and downs of life better than most people. Let's hope the worst is behind you and a future full of the love of good people is what is ahead for you.
The ultimate song by Elton!
A masterpiece composition! As a a twelve year old back in 1973, I can remember how this arrangement gripped me. As an accomplished pianist myself, I still to this day am amazed at Sir Elton’s musical giftedness through musical pieces like this one. Thank you Sir Elton for influencing my own musical ear at an early age. You have been and continue to be an incredibly talented man who, in my opinion, holds a high artistically aesthetic place in musical history along side of Bach and Beethoven. Thanks for sharing your musical skills through the years. You truly have been a blessing to me!
Amen! Loves lies bleeding may be the best song in his catalog. Dee Murry's bass line is insane
I so agree with you. I've studied this piece, tho I don't play, my grandfather was a musician as is my son. This piece is damn near perfection. When they marry the synthesizer with organ...what??? Wow, the hook. At 8.26 with just the piano and kick drum...I'm lost in the composition by then. Beautiful...🤗
HaHa I was 14. My first album in '73 was the Who's Quadrophenia and I played it on my parents TV/Phono/AMFM console.
I was 11 I still have this album
Very underrated band. Davey Johnstone on guitar. Dee Murray on bass. Nigel Olssen on drums. Timeless and outstanding!
The sound from this song is amazing, including the piano and guitar. I grew up listening to great music like this, but now I wonder where have all the talent gone?
There is no lack of talent, but everything is drenched nowadays in production, in marketing, in image, commercialism. But talent is out there
I agree. The modern (junk) is like listening to a slow motion train wreck.
My wife passed away 20 days ago ! I said let me charge my wife's phone! And this song was right in front she loved this album 😢cant be leave it's on right now!😭😪
I’m so sorry for your loss. Keep those memories close to your heart. 💔🥹🙏🏼
I was 18 when this song debuted. It was great then. It's even greater now. Long live Elton John and musical talent.
This is the most insane way to start a record.
I remember this song from a motorcycle trip while in medical school. Truly magic at night looking at the stars. Self medication helped....
been listening to this song for 35yrs always thought the 1st line was the roses in the window box have turned to dew outside lol thx for the lyrics
Glad to help ;-)
Yeah I've been mishearing the lyrics for decades too.
Not to be that internet corrector guy, but, actually, *have tilted to one side*. Sorry. Now begins the jabs & insults.
I love this song. This is a song I'd love to have played at my memorial service when I'm dead and gone.
absolutely
Paul C This is my one of favourite songs from Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.
I'd also like this to start. Then Queen 'Keep Yourself Alive'. Cars 'Movin In Stereo, ELP 'Toccata', Yes 'Close To The Edge', Bowie 'Queen Bitch', ELP 'Karn Evil 9' all 3 parts, Beatles 'A Day In The Life' and end it with ELO 'Fire On High'. For big finish sendoff.
Jamie Malokas 3 more that came to mine. Led Z's 'Misty Mountain Hop', Fixx's 'Saved By Zero', and Fiona Apple's version of Beatle's 'Across The Universe'. ELO always finishes it.
Me too
Wow brings back some awesome memories... my daughter used this music for her gymnastics floor routine one year. Nailed it every time. My father passed away that year. She was very close to her grandfather. This was her selection to honor her POP POP.. Tomorrow is the 17th anniversary of his death. Strange how I came across this today. Thank you Elton. Your music is healing! God Bless you Pop. Miss you more than ever! This one is for you Johnny!! 7/13/66 - 3/9/04
I was eighteen in 1973 when this song came out. It was the best time in my life and this song was the soundtrack. The quiet instrumental part of Love Lies Bleeding with the piano and flute always hearkens me back. There's magic in this song.
laserluver1 I was born in 83 but my parents raised me listening to this kind of music with the musicians of their day. I got all my friends friends growing up hooked on it as well. It’s funny the looks I get when I tell people music from this era is the soundtrack of my life. Anyway the point I’m trying to make is I agree and understand what you’re saying completely.
That part gives me the chills every time
@@strokeraceventura2550 I was born in 1980 and this was so much of the music of my early life too. Been an Elton fan for 30 years.
I've seen Elton at least 7 times in concert but the best of his shows when he played Funeral For A Friend. The crowd went crazy. It was absolutely awesome!
This Song Is A Flat Out Masterpiece His Best Song
My life is complete !..... Thank you Sir Elton John !
Elton John & his band opened a concert at Randwick Racecourse (Sydney, Australia) in the summer of 1977 with Funeral for a Friend & Love Lies Bleeding. He was wearing his then trademark giant glasses & a glittery jumpsuit with coloured balls on springs. 50,000+ people and he brought the house down ! Best live concert I've ever been too ! An amazing sound, brilliant musicianship .. Yellow Brick Road arguably one of the Top Ten most influential Pop Albums of all time ...!
Sounds like 1974
high school and college friend's amc hatchback, 8 track player. life seemed so simple back in the 70s. who knew
And A High Performance 401 Under The Hood, No Doubt!
Such a genius on the bass, Dee Murray! Wow is the word!!!
Bass line is genius! I 100% agree!
Saw Sir Elton play live and I am a better person for it.
Masterpiece opening two tracks from one of the greatest albums of all time. Funeral For A Friend has elements of Bach, Rachmaninov, and Elgar in there, and Love Lies Bleeding has one of Davey Johnstone's finest riffs and a nice piano solo from Elton. Masterfully produced by the late Gus Dudgeon.
Mark Fernandes - THANKS for background notes
I agree, this was Elton's version of the Rock Opera theme., that was prevalent at the time.
That arrangement is just incredible..
I so hope he does this song tomorrow night in Cincinnati, been a fan for years first time to see him in person can't wait!
Greatest 11 minutes in rock and roll history.
Just a wonderful and amazing song, Elton, Bernie and Gus at their best
This song is dedicated to my brother Carl passed away this year 2/10 2018, love you EJ.
Incredibly powerful song-surely one, if not, his best!
It is under and such an amazing transition. Goosebumps.
When I was a junior in high school my American Literature teacher made us do a song synopsis on this. Thank you Mr. Dennis Jantz for opening up our minds!
Saw him do the last concert of his first U.S. tour @ The Original Electric Factory in Philly. An old converted warehouse that held say 200 occupants. Your Song was the only commercial hit. He went on & on about how wonderful he'd been received here. Then proceeded to rock the walls of that cinder block cave for HOURS. He was so young and full of electricity & played like a man possessed. Still in my top 3 concerts ever. A total wildman but full of love too.
Thanks for sharing that memory & story! How fortunate you were to be there!
David Hentschel contributed so much to this song...don't think he got the credit he deserved
Damn few things make life really worth living. This is one of them.
I'd forgotten about this song and how excellent was. Wish music like "Love Lies Bleeding" was still being made. Love to hear Social Distortion do a cover of it.
+C. Parks Very interesting concept. I am a big Social Distortion fan and can see where this song would be a good fit....their rendition of course.
One of the greatest songs ever. Seeing Elton perform this as the opening song of his concert I attended a few days after the death of one of my dearest friends was very cathartic and comforting. And, it's a kick-jam too. God bless you, Elton John.
Undoubtedly his greatest rock and roll song. Stands up to any.
I'm listening to this for the first time with headphones. Wow!
First time ever ?
you really hear Dee's bassline
These are the songs that made Elton John a rock legend!
This is one of Sir Elton's best songs, period!!! Death durge to enlightenment! It plays well at a planetarium as well.
When I go out to Goldendale, WA next August for the Total Eclipse of the Sun, I'll be playing this as it happens and then "Morrining Has Brocken" by Cat Stevens just like my stepdad did the last time it happened there in 1979. Why is this place so important, it has an exact replica of Stonehenge, created as a WWI memorial for all of those who died in the county.
Dirge is so spelt.
Elton John and Bernie Taupin are right up there with any of the other genius writers of our age. Elton John's sensibilities of bringing Bernie Taupin's lyrics to life remind me of Michaelangelo's bringing marble to life.
Amen!
Wow....the genius of Sir Elton John. What can I say?
Amazing work.
Absolute total genius. Start to finish..
Definitely Sir Elton John's greatest song. And that's no small feat as Elton has plenty of great songs. One of the best musicians of our time.
one of the greatest albums,ever!!!
I may not like every one of his songs, but elton outdid himself on this one. it is a fantastic headphones tune. definately on my " stranded on a desert island " play list!!
What an Amazing Feat Gus Dudgeon fashioned here, to take these Master Musicians Sounds and weave them into this Incredible Song! Such a KILLER BAND AND A SUBLIME SONG!
🎸💚
We're doing this in my marching band show this year and I gotta say it's a damn fine song
I remember the days Just only 15 when this song came out
One of the loveliest tunes I've ever heard.
1973 3 Of The Greatest Albums Of All Time Came Out Led Zeppelin Houses Of The Holy And Elton John Goodbye Yellow Brick Road And Pink Floyd Dark Side Of The Moon
And, I graduated from high school, and, 5 months later found myself In the USAF!
Quadrophenia
Band On The Run
I had this double record on vinyl when I was a kid. I must have spent hundreds of hours looking at the album cover, singing along to the lyrics on my record player. Better times.
I was there, I was there......
I was absolutely blown away the first time I heard the whole album "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" in 1974. My friend introduced me to it. We were married a couple years later, and he passed away 30 years later.
what an absolute masterpiece. kinda prog but still so rockin. too bad this one isnt appreciated by more people.
Oh, but it is.
Most Elton John songs have like 3 trillion hits. Yet this one is my all time favorite, only has a half million hits. Sleeper
My first music from Santa...cassettes that and Best of Bread. Still listening...
Wow, the Best of Bread. I still have my "Make it with you" LP.
It's strange, how Elton John's magnum opus was realized so early in his storied career.
It was like a supersonic rocket. . . just when you thought it was dying down, then the melodic drama began again, and took off like a "rocket," into outer space. Elton was in a different world altogether from "the rest." Thisss is my lifelong anthem, and ultimate high in life.
I credit my Mother for my love for EJ ! Takes me back every time ! ❤️ you Mom !
The Piano At 3.31 Blows My Mind Flipping Amazing
I spent as much time admiring the artwork on this album as I did listening to the songs. Outstanding, crescendo upon crescendo upon crescendo.
Elton opened a concert at the L.A. Forum with this song. He floated out onto the stage, over 10 feet tall with this long yellow cape all the way to the floor. When he got to the piano, he dropped the cape, stepped down onto the piano bench, and we saw that he'd come out on the shoulders of this huge black dude. It was amazing. I wish there was video around from that.
I went to a concert at Wembley once and Elton opened with this and he had audience in the palm of his hand from the beginning to the end. Shame it cost the fat end of £200 to see him at the O2 now as so many people will miss out. Best piano man ever coupled with the best lyricist ever. Unbeatable combination.
Elton you are the greatest thing that ever happen to music ! ❤️👍
First time I heard this song I was sitting in a cemetary with some friends and the beginning of the song really got my attention and feel in love with this song on the spot.
My dad says when he passes he wants this to be played at his funeral it's one of his favorite songs
Joshua Duck , we played at my father's Funeral . ❤
me too
OMG, Davey's riff in this song (especially the opening riffs to 'Love Lies Bleeding') is just *Chef's Kiss* perfect. 😊☺️🙂🙂🙂
One of my forever favorites! Beautiful song!!!
My favorite Elton John song.... Can still here my Dad playing it on guitar and singing when i was a kid as well as every other Elton song.....
LOVE THE BIG THEATRICAL SOUND
Saw them live. Outta this world fantastic!
My dad Geoffrey Paterson, loved this song, rest in peace Dad.
He had good taste in music.
Not many know how long and hard the road was for Elton John before he finally hit it big. He went through a lot of stuff in his early career years that most would not have put up with.
Dennis Diamond j
For example?
NOBODY has ever made better music than Sir Elton John! LOVE HIM!
one of my absolute favorites!
Mine too.
my sister just passed yesterday, and my mom said this song is to be played for her, and this my first time hearing it.
Best Elton John track.
+ChevKen He's an Aries man, no doubt.
Inspirational and the best goal for anyone who loves to play piano or just listen to it and enjoy it!
I love the live version of this from Here and There. So much energy in it.
Elton, I Have Idolized you since I was 2 years old. I have been collecting your Albums since I was 2 years old. thanks to my mom helping me. then from there it was all me. 2 years old..... that beginning was in 1972.... Elton.. I have not stopped loving you. you always knew what to write, what to sing.. you have helped me through some tough times... 2015.. im here today, & will be here listening to you always. God Bless you.
The back up vocals are superb, and every piece of music should sound as great as dees bass tone.
Gus Dudgeon was such a genius in creating the amazing sound of this masterpiece!
THE GREATEST SONG EVER WRITTEN!!!!!!!!!!!!
Charlie Turner one of the good ones dude !
Charlie Turner

Always enjoyed the album version, Thanks, Ronnie, One of my top E J fav's
Can't get enough of the guitar riffs!
....my fav Elton....Love lies bleeding....
I lived thru the birth of rock 'n roll and was in Vietnam when it peaked. This is one of the greatest of all time because I've heard them all. Like the Mona Lisa or the Pieta, enjoy it, because there is only one.
get depressed. thank God for elton
A fantastic number by Elton john
It's the flute that has always taken my breath away.
ARP synthesizer
@@RonnieFriend Well, it sounds like a flute. It's in the quiet instrumental part with the piano and it has always knocked me out. I was 18 when that album came out and it was pretty much the soundtrack of the best time in my life.
This was played at one of my best friends funerals in 1979 only 2 weeks after he had bought the album and then was killed in a tragic car wreck with several other friends also besides him.
Music is my life. Sorry for your loss..
That short dude playin the piano is pretty awesome,.! 'EVERYBODY' knows your name Sir Elton John...
Elton John has been a badass since I was a kid,he still is!!
Have you ever noticed how some lengthy classic rock songs follow a unique formula that makes them so timeless? Think about it: House of the Rising Sun, Stairway to Heaven, Bohemian Rhapsody, November Rain, and this: they all have a soft beginning, which then builds up to the climax, and for a small fraction of time, end in the way they began. Sort of like Shakespeare's plays: a rising action, a climax, and a resolution
To you my sweet sister in Christ..you went home to be with our Father in heaven..I will truly miss all the funny stuff we talked about...but most of all I'll miss you...Father needed you more the he felt we did...gone today but never will I forget you...miss you... love MICHELE
Best song ever written! It's sad when a sad song lifts me up, but this song kicks arse!
And sad songs say so much
best song Elton and the band ever recorded.
...great stuff...I missed him when I was in Va. Beach in 1973, he was playing in Hampton. I did get to see him live in Tacoma Wa….early 2000's..
brother went to jail left me his elton john records. Best time ever
Love lies bleeding has been my favorite Elton John song since this album came out. Nothing has been able to usurp it and there are some awesome songs to contend. Thanks for posting.
UR welcome
