"Have you ever wondered about the complex origins of the Black Choctaw Indians? The narrative of this remarkable group is a testament to the rich and intertwined histories of Foundational Black Americans and Native Americans. Their story, however, is far from monolithic, with individual and family histories painting a diverse picture of their origins. Some Foundational Black Americans became an integral part of the Choctaw Nation through the institution of slavery. By the nineteenth century, the Choctaws, like many Southeastern tribes, had incorporated chattel slavery into their economic systems, mirroring the structures of Southern plantations. This adoption of slavery was a strategic move to assimilate into the European settler culture, maintain economic stability, and wield political leverage against the pressures of Western expansion. Yet, it's crucial to remember that the Choctaws had their own pre-existing tradition of incorporating war captives, either as slaves or adopted community members-a practice that predates and differs from European chattel slavery. But then, there were others, individuals of Black Indian descent like Mary Duncan, who traced their lineage within the Choctaw Nation to a time before the institution of slavery. In a two thousand and four interview, Mary Duncan, a member of the Choctaw Nation in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, stated that there were many Black Indians in the Americas before the arrival of the pilgrims. She emphasized that their fight was for citizenship as Black Indians, not African Americans, tracing their roots back to Native American ancestors rather than African ones. So, these histories suggest that the relationship between Foundational Black Americans and Native Americans was not solely defined by the oppressive bonds of slavery. Instead, it was also characterized by mutual social and cultural exchanges, and possibly early pre-Columbian contact between the two groups. So, it's clear that the origins of the Black Choctaw Indians are far from simple, with a history that is rich and multifaceted."

This is true. My great great grandfather circa 1902 applied for enrollment in the five civilized tribes (Choctaw). He was rejected not because he was not a member but because he had dark skin. Early records show that my lineage was characterized as mulatto but later the same people were reclassified as black in later Census. The main reason is because if they were classified as native Americans they would have qualified for land rights. The questions they were asked like “Did your descendants have a part of the treaty of Dancing Rabbit” or “ Do you speak Choctaw “ was a bit jaded especially when my ancestors were slaves and Amerindian mix. Few truly speak the language and do not know the complex treaties between the US government and the Indian leaders of the tribes. Of course my ancestors were not pro it to that being that few Indian women married slaves and the Choctaw is a matriarchal society being that the land rights go to the female progeny and not the males. As a result, our lineage were once again disenfranchised. Not angry just aware that truth sometimes depends on the authors of the history books.
That’s deep . I can relate I have the same dynamic within my family. I’ve been able to trace my lineage to the trail of tears to my grandmother a Choctaw woman named Sookie that was my matriarch. Also my grandfather lost his rights because he married a dark skinned woman and he spoke full Choctaw he had to get a translator to help him apply for benefits. Which he was denied
The enrollment Office don't ask questions like that. Thats ridiculous🤣🤣 What they ask for is your birth certificate and a genealogy chart thats filled out with the name & roll number of UR Choctaw ancestor & if you have it, they will enroll you & of course if you don't have, they will deny you enrollment.

I discovered a document on ancestry that says my dad grandfather was Choctaw from Mississippi.

If your father is not enrolled in Choctaw nation, then he isn't Choctaw & neither are you. U have to have the roll number & birth certificate that proves your a descendant of a Choctaw, if you dont have those then you're not Choctaw. Its just a family myth that every A.A. family has that they are part N.A. U have to fill out a genealogy chart & list the roll number of UR Choctaw ancestor that will prove UR a Choctaw.

My dad is Choctaw from Township Magee which is named after his great great grandfather who was a twin. They were twin brothers Freedmen owned a lot and were wealthy. His grandfather bought over 1000 acres of land patents all in Choctaw area. Prentiss, Collins, Bass field and Pearl River. Part of one of his land patents sits on Gwinville oil and gas field. Oh and the Choctaw = Chocolate colored ppl

The video did say that the black Choctaws (or whoever) were of mixed heritage which would not be usual under the circumstances. So if part of that heritage includes Cherokee blood like yours then that IS part of that person’s heritage. Who are you to tell them they can’t acknowledge it?

Choctaw have babies with non-Indians & they go on & continue to marry non-Choctaw & soon they no longer have enough blood quantum to enroll as Choctaw. The originals of Africa have been sailing to the Americas and all parts of the world before Columbus's grandmother was born. No one was allowed into Africa at that time, Europeans were only allow to the ports of Africa for trading. A few Africans then helped navigate Columbus to the Americas. When they arrived blacks were here and had separated into different tribes, and no one else, this is the reason the Europeans has problem getting on land, the original was not used to settling with them.
