Who are the Blackfoot?

  • The Blackfoot Indians, also known as the Niitsitapi or Siksika, are a group of indigenous peoples who traditionally lived in the Great Plains region of North America. They are divided into three tribes: the Siksika, the Kainai, and the Piikani. The Blackfoot tribes were nomadic, following the buffalo herds for food and other resources.
The Blackfoot people had a complex society, with a strong emphasis on family and community. They had a matrilineal kinship system, with descent and inheritance passed through the mother's line. They also had a complex system of governance, with both political and spiritual leaders playing important roles in the tribe.
The Blackfoot people were skilled hunters and warriors, known for their horseback riding and use of the bow and arrow. They also had a rich cultural tradition, including storytelling, music, and art. They had a complex religious belief system that included a creator god, as well as spirits and ceremonies that were believed to have power over the natural world.
The arrival of European settlers in the 18th and 19th centuries had a major impact on the Blackfoot people. The introduction of firearms and new technologies made hunting and warfare more deadly, and the expansion of settlements led to the loss of hunting grounds and other traditional territories. The Blackfoot people also suffered from diseases brought by the Europeans, such as smallpox, which devastated their population.
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the U.S. government implemented a policy of forced assimilation, aimed at assimilating indigenous peoples into mainstream American culture. This policy included the forced removal of children from their families and placement in boarding schools, where they were forced to abandon their traditional ways and adopt European-American customs and values.
Today, the Blackfoot people continue to struggle with the legacy of this forced assimilation and the loss of their traditional ways of life. However, many Blackfoot people have worked to revive and preserve their cultural traditions, including language, music, and art. They also work to protect their rights and sovereignty as indigenous peoples.
Overall, the Blackfoot Indians were a proud and independent people who had a rich cultural heritage and deep spiritual connection to the land. They were skilled hunters and warriors, and had a complex society with a strong emphasis on family and community. However, the arrival of European settlers brought drastic changes to their way of life, and the Blackfoot people continue to struggle with the legacy of forced assimilation and the loss of their traditional ways of life. Nevertheless, many Blackfoot people have worked to revive and preserve their cultural traditions and protect their rights and sovereignty as indigenous peoples.

I am mostly Irish but I have a bit of native American ancestry through my grandfather who was Blackfeet/ Cherokee. I was taught to braid my hair as a Child and learned a little about heritage but an ugly divorce my parents had later saw that I grew up afterwards separate from all that.
I even got my middle name from my grampa but know so little about his culture.
As a tall young man with long hair and sharp features many people ask if I am native so in those instances I honor my grandpa and claim his tribe, The Blackfeet.

So I looked up what a Blackfoot Indian looks like. And my mother looked just like them. And she used to always say she was a Indian. She was a black woman. She was also a undefeated unisex boxer. She fought men and women and never lost. She had a library full of fighting books. She had weights and, a speed bag, heavy bag, and everything to practice fighting. She also had bow and arrows, darts and all kind of other unconventional weapons. She was a warrior for real. Her name was Hattie mae Davy. She was from Illinois.

We have Custer's scalp, and share a piece of it in our museum, a very little known fact. When I was little, an elder once told me, "We are blackfoot, for we begin each day in prayer just as we take our first step into our day, into the unknown. In prayer one may not see the future as it is black and unseeable with one's eyes, it is in this very way we do not see with our eyes we see with our heart and to do so in this manner with no guarantees just faith is a brave way to be, and this is Blackfoot."

Can't trace lineage through DNA, YOU GOT TO DO YOUR GENEALOGY
If you're Seminole or Gullah Geechee, you're composed of multiple tribes of the Southeast, with the most being Muskogean.
Also, there's no genetic samples of the Negro Indians, especially of the Southeast in their database and more Indians shipped to West Africa than Africans shipped to the Americas
10 million Africans is a lie and puffing the stats along with Goree Island "Door of No Return" proven to be a lie also
Human cargo from Africa made up 20% of the Trans-Atlantic Trade and a good bit of that cargo were Indians taken from the Americas since the early 1500's, Trans-Atlantic Trade started in 1493 with the Black Caribe's Columbus enslaved and took back with him

The Bible teaches that in the near future God's Kingdom, his government, will destroy the wickedness we see on earth today and leave only those who want to live under his loving sovereignty. But all these people who lived in the past will come back to life and live in a clean and peaceful world as well. Among these will be the Indian nations, who loved the land so much (Psalm 37:10,11,29, Daniel 2:44) They will no longer remember all that they suffered, ever again (Isaiah 65:17). They will live under a righteous government by the Son of God. No one else will mistreat them anymore (Revelation 21:3,4).

It's key to keep in mind that the 'benefits' that many non Indigenous people assume are 'given' or "free" to Indigenous people are very specifically from monies that the governments owe the nations as a result of Treaties. Treaties are inherently agreements between sovereign nations - the early colonizing authorities recognized that the land was held by various nations, and sought to put agreements in place because the cost of battle with warriors who knew the area/environment and who were trained to fight in smaller units or as independent problem solvers was difficult for the highly regimented colonizing forces to face without significant cost.
The initial Treaty agreements, of course, were often not entered into in good faith by most colonial representatives. There was also the difficulty of translation - some European words, like "King" simply didn't have direct equivalents in Indigenous languages and cultures where there wasn't a monarchy. Subsequent governments continued (and continue) to violate the terms of the Treaties.
In Canada, the Supreme Court has established that the very first basis of all the treaties, The Royal Proclamation of 1763, has never been revoked, invalidated, overturned or rescinded.
The 'benefits' that some Indigenous people are able to access are typically allocations of whatever Treaty obligations are being honoured (usually in the minimum degree possible,) or are part of wider agreements or reparations from governments (federal, provincial/territorial/state) through other legally binding agreements.
Also keep in mind that several of the Treaties - including the Laramie Treaties in the US - were specifically peace treaties established after the US sued for peace (twice) after being soundly trounced by the Indigenous people (in the case of the Laramie Treaties, by the Lakota).
And, as pointed out, even for the available resources, eligible Indigenous peoples have to apply and meet criteria for various resources.
Those of us who are not Indigenous need to be mindful of how we make and promote assumptions about Indigenous peoples.
      Sincerely,
Someone who could have a federal Status Card and chooses not to leverage ancestry to access treaty rights linked to a culture I was not brought up in, a language I do not speak, and a community with which I do not have direct personal connection.
