Dear Professor, I appreciate you for your quick response. You are a great person and dedicated to helping those in need. Really thank you. In the Select export type button, I could not get "XML" but XLS, CSV, GeoJSON, SPSS Labels, CSV (legacy), GPs coordinates (KML), XLS(legacy), and Media Attachment(ZIP) are found. Under the value and header format, there is XML Value and Headers.
Hi Hirut, you are on the right path. Just select the XLS and then under the value and header format select “XML value and Headers” then export. With this you will have the excel file that you can import into SPSS. Then you can get the SPSS labels 🏷️. I will create a document to guide you if you still have issues by tomorrow. Cheers

Dear Professor, thank you so much for your clear and simple description. When I try to click the label button there is no such a word in the option. There are other options like English language, local language that I used to translate and XML values and header. How can I get the label? please.
Hi Hirut. The interface has changed a bit but no worries. Just go under downloads, select “SPSS labels” and under value and header format select “XML values and Headers”. Then export and download. Then go to the select export type and select “XML” then under value and header format select “XML values and Headers”. Then export and download. So you should have 2 files now. Then follow the process to import into SPSS and you should be good to go. Let me know how it goes.

Great question Elizabeth! It is a cool software that allows you to create electronic forms (questionnaires) that you can use to collect data online as well as offline using your mobile phone. Checkout this playlist of my videos on electronic data collection ruclips.net/p/PLRcs85w3wYvhb-LXIhtxh6FkyW7pp6i3L Kindly let me know if you need any more information 😊
Great question. Launch your SPSS and click on file >> Open >>> Syntax. Another way is to double click on the syntax file that was generated from the kobo server. I hope this helps?
This video is amazing. However, I have a quiry. When the values are imported, the multiple response values aren't imported in dichotomous form. As you can see in your video too, the value of multiple response answers are 'none'. Is there any way to import dichotomous value of multiple response answers that has been created using categorical value in kobo? Thanks!
Hi Nilima, great question. There shouldn’t be any problems importing multiple response values. Are you getting any error messages when you run the command in SPSS? if yes, kindly let me know what type of error you are having and if there are no errors then try exporting the file in CSV format from Kobotoolbox and this should do the trick. There can be some minor compatibility issues with the syntax from Kobotoolbox server and older versions of SPSS software. Let me know the version of SPSS you are using so I may suggest another workaround if the prior suggestions do not work. I hope this helps?
Thank you very sincerely for this. I am glad I saw this video. However, when I ran the SPSS label syntax, not all the labels were transferred. It indicated "Warning # 4464 in Column 3" and it further stated that "An invalid command symbol appeared on the VAR Labels command where a variable name was expected". What could have caused this sir?
Glad it helped! It’s very likely that these must be a difference in the variable labels from the form and what is exported. What variable is in Column 3? Try to look at the syntax and change the name of the variable in the syntax to the same name as what is in column 3. It should do the trick. Let me know how it goes
Thank you very much for the informative video. When running the Syntax file, i encountered the error "Text value unmmappable in the current server locale". How do i adrees this?
Hi Lawrence, sorry to hear that you encountered this problem. You need to simply redownload a new file from the Kobotoolbox server and this time compare the values in the syntax file with that of you SPSS data file. Make sure the variable names are the same. If they are different, it may be an issue from the server. You can manually correct the names from the syntax
Thank you for the help. Please I have a question. After downloading the labels, the file appeared as a WinRAR ZIP archive file instead of an spss syntax file. I then went ahead and used the spss to open as such, but it appeared blank. Could you help tell me what to do? What did I do wrong?
Fariha, it’s simple! All you need to do is unzip the Zipped file, you will find the SPSS syntax file inside. Click on it and it will open inside SPSS automatically. I hope this helps?
