Growing up in syria, a country of war, I watched this movie during the first years of war that was happening I was around 7 and I kept thinking in my head that we were all gonna die from either starvation, beaten to death or shot at. The idea of dying of old age never crossed my mind. Now that I'm safe in another country idk what to do with myself because I never saw a future for myself. When ppl asked me what did I wish to become when I was younger i never knew what to reply. This movie was going to become my reality luckily I was able to leave. But this is definitely the reality of many of my people that's why this movie holds such a special place in my heart.

Grave of The Fireflies is one kind of movies that i'll NEVER watch it again for the second time, don't get me wrong this movie is a masterpiece and that is the reason why.
I am a fan of sad anime and movies, but the sadness this movie gives to you is different, because once you watch it would bring more pain for long time and you'll never stop think about it.
Unlike other series/movies, when sad moments happen they would impact you but you could probably move on after that. But this movie dude, it breaks me so bad even by hearing its name i would end up thinking it again for the rest of the day and ruin my mood..

2:40 the exact point of the movie where I lost it.
Since the beginning of the film, Seita is taken by the responsibility of not showing his feelings and not crying in front of his little sister, Setsuko. But when he find that she knows about his mother's sad fate, everything falls on him. Look how sensitive, rich and sad this scene is, he still tries not to cry, he tries to hold it. From that point, i cried all the way through it.

This movie was one of the most realistic and sad movies I’ve ever watched
My dad showed it to me when I was 9 and ,normally as a child ,I expected a happy ending for both of them. That was the first time I was confronted with an unexpected and different outcome.
Even if I hated it at first I learned that some story’s just don’t end like you want it to because not always is a happy ending suitable. I think the ending was great for the movie. It’s really sad but I’m happy to have watched it.

There are so many Setsuko and Seitas in this world.
Orphans, innocent souls, the true victims of the war, victims of the cruel policy, they get killed, raped, tortured, but nobody cared for them.
But the worst and saddest thing is, they don't have a name... Nobody will remember them or care for them...
You have to understand, this movie is not only a masterpiece, it's truly unique. It is NOT like those stupid american movies about brave strong soldiers, the heros in every movie, killing 'evil' people to show how great a gun is and the war...
THIS IS THE REALITY OF WAR!
Those forgotten children are the true victims of war. This movie is unique, because it shows the pur reality. Never forget, that there are so many Seita and Setsukos in this world.

The first time I saw this movie, I was on a plane. I'm not really much of a crier, but watching this movie made me cry so hard. It was heartbreaking, I have siblings Setsuko and Seita's age and it made it so much harder to watch. A few days ago, I watched it again (I know, bad idea) and I thought maybe it'd be easier the second time. I was dead wrong. Watching the movie and _knowing_ what was going to happen made it so much worse. I didn't cry, I _sobbed_.
The directors left a lot of clues and foreshadowing that you can only really notice on a rewatch, so if you're brave enough to bear it look out for those.
War is horrible. Horrible, cruel and most ironically of all, the most unjust pursuit of justice there is. And it's heartbreaking to know that Setsuko and Seita's story isn't an exception, it's a story shared by millions over the ages, a story being told right now with refugees.
You'd think as a human race, we'd know better than to repeat our same mistakes...aren't we supposed to be intelligent or something?

We can try our best to stop things like this by learning from our mistakes but we're only human and that means we aren't perfect and we make a shit ton of mistakes. It is bound to happen that people that are awful will rise up because we live in a non-perfect world. Because of this sometimes war is the ONLY solution. War isn't a person that is causing everyone's life misery, it is a byproduct of humans because humans can just be shitty. so no war is not the problem. we are.

The movie showcases the pain of the japanese during the Hiroshima Nagasaki incident, and even though this song isn't specifically about war, it is about loss and greif. Showing this vulnerability from two rivaling sides in a war shows us just that there are no winners in a war.

    Lyrics
The evil it spread like a fever ahead
It was night when you died, my firefly
What could I have said to raise you from the dead?
Oh could I be the sky on the fourth of July?
    "Well you do enough talk
My little hawk, why do you cry?
Tell me what did you learn from the Tillamook burn?
    Or the Fourth of July?
    We're all gonna die."
Sitting at the bed with the halo at your head
Was it all a disguise, like Junior High
Where everything was fiction, future, and prediction
Now where am I? My fading supply
"Did you get enough love, my little dove
    Why do you cry?
And I'm sorry I left, but it was for the best
    Though it never felt right
    My little Versailles."
The hospital asked should the body be cast
Before I say goodbye, my star in the sky
Such a funny thought to wrap you up in cloth
Do you find it all right, my dragonfly?
"Shall we look at the moon, my little loon
    Why do you cry?
Make the most of your life, while it is rife
    While it is light
    Well you do enough talk
My little hawk, why do you cry?
Tell me what did you learn from the Tillamook burn?
    Or the Fourth of July?
    We're all gonna die."

The Japanese did atrocious things to China, Korea, and many parts of asia they have colonised or fought to colonise. People were raped, slaughtered and executed in disgusting ways. But even so, we need to understand that innocent civilians had NOTHING to do with their government's cruelty, especially not children.
Growing up in China, we heard often of the heart wrenching acts in which Japanese soldiers have performed, told in the form of anecdotes daily by our teachers and relatives.
As a child i've always harboured hatred for the country and its people.
But as I grew it became clear that hatred only fuels more hate.

I came across to this song a while ago but I wasn’t really into it. But today I was going through Facebook and came across with a post about this one guy from Venezuela who committed suicide on Wednesday. I was shocked when I started reading all his posts seeking for help. I read that he even had to get special help but it didn’t seem to work. Everything that he was going through was a bit too much for him and decided to commit suicide. And as I was going through his pictures I found a screenshot of one of his playlist and I decided to look up his account and found it. It’s called “play me” and he had this song on it and it’s as if he found support on music. I feel really bad just to think about how depression can really end lives of really special people. You realize that this particular movie portrays American aggression, right? These people in the movie are being burned alive by Americans. "banned weapons" IS a hilarious sentiment though! Banned by... who? The US? Because we were definitely using that shit in Iraq so for us to say anything seems a tad bit hypocritical. That being said, it's definitely too bad the US decided to regime change your government in 2014 and use your countrymen as patsies in a proxy war with the USSR's ghost. Don't even try to deny it--Nuland is ON TAPE handpicking your "elected" leaders.

@@PleaseDontDeleteMyComments It is quite strange that you are trying to prove to me what we all know, but also with some reproach. I have enough of empty arguments and emissions of human anger. Do I understand that this film depicts the killing of innocent people by Americans? Yes, it does. Is it different from what is happening in my homeland? No. But if you dig deeper and dive into political tartars, it turns out to be much more terrible. After all, you do not fully understand the purpose of this war. You said that our elected officials are chosen by America, but I will tell you that Russia chooses them more. Just like you. Trump is an example of that. This endless cycle of genocidal wars and tours has been going on for centuries. And if you really believe that all this is a global plan of the United States to destroy Russia by the hands of Ukraine, then you are mistaken, I would like to say it, but we all understand that there is some truth in this. BUT! I must say that this war would not have happened if not for our history. You can't imagine how many centuries we have been mocked by this vile people. How many genocides were arranged to destroy us. And they almost succeeded. During the Holodomor, 40 million Ukrainians were killed. This is revenge for everything we had to go through. If there was no resentment, there would be no war. So do not make yourself an expert. It sounds pompous that the whole world is ruled by people from above, but the truth is much simpler. People need freedom! And they will get it any way they like, even if a character is elected as their chosen one. And please do not change the focus of the enemy. Now the enemy is the one who kills. The enemy is the one who rapes women and babies. The enemy is the one who tortures. The enemy is Russia, Putin, soldiers and people who support all these horrors. And I want to emphasize that this is an enemy not only for Ukraine but for the whole world! Peace will come only when everyone understands this. Just as once everyone recognized Nazi Germany as evil and took action. I saw with my own eyes how people are tortured and raped and then killed. I don't need to prove anything anymore. With all due respect, please do not take my message in an aggressive sense

When I first watched this, I knew they are both going to die. I knew. I prepared for that moment, but I never knew it's going to hurt so, so bad. I was a sobbing mess, and my heart was so heavy with unspoken emotions for many days. That 4:17 was so heartbreaking to see again. Seita's bones sticking out, setsuko unmoving, the way seita hold her, and the way his eyes look so dead. As if he died with her.
The fact that this is just animation, but happens to a lot of children, and is still happening, makes it twice harder to watch. Their childhood and innocence unfairly rob of them because of human actions. Innocent lives gone. As if fireflies, whose life were bright at first but fleeting. I just hope, and I can only wish that war will be gone and civilians could live peacefully again.

It constantly reminded me of how I was used as a child, and how he was never punished for said actions. Suddenly, many people found it on TikTok and I was forced to hear it once in a while while scrolling. At some point I realized that hearing the song didn't bother me as much as it used to, that the artist never knew my groomer, nor was it the song's fault that some random guy ruined it for me. In fact, it was a good song. It's been fours years since then, and I'm finally listening to this song on my own accord. It reminds me more of my own self back then than it does him. Fireflies are beautiful, they are surreal. I've only seen them once as a kid visiting my grandmother's house in central Mexico on a hot humid summer night (unusual weather; usually dry weather). Its as if you are surrounded by flickering stars or fairies you can actually catch. Now imagine being surrounded by them as far as the eye can see near and far and you can walk through and around them, and they move around you and through fields.
They're an infrequent sight in most of the world, but there are a few places around the world where they show up every year for a few months during the summer (most fireflies only live a few days sadly).

I heard this song first and the sadness and resignation really resonated with me, so then we watched the grave of the fireflies, then i came back and watched this vid again and it is such a striking, painful pairing of art.
Grief is all i feel every time. i could watch this on repeat a thousand times and still feel the weight of the thousands of untold stories like this brother and sister. all their potential taken from them in one sentence, "We got another one over here."
I think if we all looked at war through this lens, we wouldn't fight anymore. many of us do, but the de-sensitization to it, the lack of reconciliation, the "glorious soldier" propaganda.. it perpetuates the "necessity" for war... we don't FEEL it enough. we are so far removed over here in the west. its too much. too heavy. too much broken-ness.
yet so beautiful in the most painful way. whoever put this vid together, kudos to you.

No war is ever a win, sir. Sure, a "greater evil" might have been stopped, but when millions die in the process and compassion is stomped out, its all just a great tragedy in the human timeline. .. no one wins in war. We pretend we won over these greater evils and we de-humanize our "enemies" through media and movies and history textbooks as if they are just heartless animals that needed to die. Its stupid. That's why the movie Grave of the Fireflies is so good. It forces the audience to pay attention to the people who aren't in the war but are still greatly affected by it.

@@tesla5052 I think Anthony's speaking to the futility of trying to actualize the grief of disenfranchised civilians in war stricken countries. Watching this video on "repeat" sounds like an exercise in masochism and a pointless one at that. You're correct in assessing that we're too far removed from human stories like the one told in Grave of the Fireflies. However we shouldn't seek the weight of this grief because we'll never really understand it.

    • @tesla5052
      @tesla5052 6 лет назад +2

Appreciate your feedback friend. How you were able to connect Anthony’s comment to your interpretation of it is beyond me at this moment. Care to elaborate?
There is nothing wrong with feeling the feels - it’s not that I like feeling grief or seek it out to ruminate or anything, it’s that it is a humble reminder to stay grateful, stay kind, stay compassionate. I think all to often we avoid grief. Especially in the west. You know how many days we get off work if a family member dies? 1. How about a spouse or parent? 2. Per year. How long until people around us think we should “get over” losses? 6-12 months is considered normal.
      Screw that. .
As a community, as a nation, we have no idea how to grieve and feel loss. I think if more people took the time to figure out how to appropriately express and feel grief, it wouldn’t be what it is to me. I feel like I feel it for all the people who are like “no no, I don’t want to go there it’s too much.” There’s too much repression in my neck of the woods and I’m over it. If I want to feel grief I’m gonna feel it.

@@tesla5052 I appreciate everything you've said but identify most with adopting an ethos of humility, gratitude, compassion and "loving at all costs" -- to quote Sufjan. We should be infinitely grateful. However when we reach to experience pain like the characters of the film I feel it does more of a disservice. The very act of attempting to feel their grief is an extension of our privilege. I'd rather weaponize our empathetic rhetoric to challenge hierarchies, eradicate protocols, and disgrace leaders responsible for the inhumanity we witnessed in WWII and all international conflict. Of course this is immensely difficult by design, and could only happen in a perfect set of circumstances. If for example the appointed leaders of the world's most powerful nations agreed on the necessity of a diplomatic court -- who's governance oversaw all nations and held each to account -- then there would exist the possibility of world peace. Sadly this would require a great deal of luck and prayers but I digress. In the time since posting my first comment I saw that you're an artist. Your quest for empathy makes a lot more sense as I can relate as one myself. Keep spreading good and kindness and hopefully one day the right people will listen.

    [Verse 1]
The evil, it spread like a fever ahead
It was night when you died, my firefly
What could I have said to raise you from the dead?
Oh, could I be the sky on the Fourth of July?
    [Chorus 1]
    "Well, you do enough talk
My little hawk, why do you cry?
Tell me, what did you learn from the Tillamook burn?
    Or the Fourth of July?
    We’re all gonna die"
    [Verse 2]
Sitting at the bed with the halo at your head
Was it all a disguise, like junior high?
Where everything was fiction, future, and prediction
Now, where am I? My fading supply
    [Chorus 2]
"Did you get enough love, my little dove?
    Why do you cry?
And I’m sorry I left, but it was for the best
    Though it never felt right
    My little Versailles"
    [Verse 3]
The hospital asked, "Should the body be cast?"
Before I say goodbye, my star in the sky
Such a funny thought to wrap you up in cloth
Do you find it all right, my dragonfly?
    [Chorus 3]
"Shall we look at the moon, my little loon?
    Why do you cry?
Make the most of your life, while it is rife
    While it is light
    Well, you do enough talk
My little hawk, why do you cry?
Tell me, what did you learn from the Tillamook burn?
    Or the Fourth of July?

the singer made this song for his mother who died in hospital because of too much drugs. She left him and his father when he was 3 (m not sure with the age, maybe it was 2)
He didn't know her at all and she didn't really care about him, althought he was in the hospital with her and then wrote this song. He gave her so much love in so short time...sad that he didn't get her love before

she suffered from schizophrenia which probably wasn't helped by the drug abuse. i think it's inaccurate to say that she didn't care about him, only that she wasn't able to be a fit mother.

My mother died of cancer, we shared an unspoken bond. I was with her all through those three years and that evening.
The evening was fourth of july 2017. And it was her birthday on the 7th.

@@ctrcx Sufjan is very open about his story, and there are several articles and interviews where he talks about these things. Many of his songs refer to her in some way directly or indirectly.

a couple months before i was born, my sister died at the age of 3, she fought blood cancer as hard as she could. she was a strong little girl. My brother was 6 when she left him he was so protective as he is with me now. The movie remind me of the relationship of my brother and sister. i wish i could've met her, she was a beautiful soul.
allah yarhamek Foula, i miss you even if ive never seen you i know you were excited to see me and i was excited too. I love you.

Why would you do this? This two masterpicies together...I can't... Also, I knew this song was sad but then I searched for the story behind it and damn I think I've never found it so hard to hold back tears.

Not many may know this but Grave of the Fireflies was based off a true story about a man who went through a similar experience that Seita went through. His name is Akiyuki Nosaka and he wrote a short story in 1967 with the same name "Grave of the Fireflies".

I watched this movie three times and I decided those three times were enough. I ended up depressed many days. It’s a masterpiece, but I don’t think I would be able to watch it again.

I have the lyrics 'It was night when you died my Firefly' tattooed on my forearm for my dog who died last year. I had her since I was a kid. She died on the night of 13th of July. She was the Firefly in my life giving me a reason. It has been just an endless night since she has gone. I love you Miley. Wherever you are, I hope you're better.

I lost my dog this July and it was the hardest thing I’ve ever done. To this day it still hurts more and more everyday. I know I’m a year late but reading you’re comment made me tear up. I know exactly how you feel. My dog was my life

I’ll only watch this movie twice in my life. Once I’ve already done and it broke me in half. I’ll watch it once more with my children when they’re old enough. So they can understand what was done. I pray to god we can stop repeating this past.
