This is actually a fundamental sales tactic. Once Ed started his never ending story, the salesman was able to identify the personality of Ed's character, and then began mimicking him. When trying to pitch a sale to a potential buyer, if you can copy their personality, it will draw them in, they will become more comfortable with you, and then when you get to the match-point, they will almost feel obligated to buy from you. That salesman wasn't genuinely interested in the story, he just thought he had a solid sales opportunity.

This video should be mandatory viewing for actor schools because this is the best INPROV I've ever seen and heard. This is why Sean Penn knows Ed is a great actor or probably more appropriate for Ed in that he never breaks his characters and happens to be doing sonething he genuinely loves hoping one day to make it. Why this guy isnt a massive breakthrough beats the shut out of me. I bed if Netflix made a deal with Ed, he'd create one of the best TV shows! He has what Sasha Cohen has except for the crude humor (which I personally love) and can do what Sasha couldnt do with HBO

During the filming of Vinny's story, forty-seven thousand pounds of enriched uranium were dumped into your drinking water. This is why we need to impose limits on the lengths of stories. Maybe not all stories, but definitely the ones that go on and on and on without ever coming to a conclusion. Stories, I've been told, should have a beginning, a middle with an exciting conflict or internal struggle, and a conclusion. Stories like Vinny's somehow miss the conclusion part. Although I can handle friendly people--hey, they're better than the non-friendly miscreants who wipe feces all over the floors of public restrooms--I have a limit of tolerance for how long I can listen to a story. This is especially true when the story is all over the board, taking you from clean drinking water to the waters of California to the cousin who does RUclips videos and makes a decent living. My dad is a story teller. People look at their watches when they see him coming and they say out loud, "would ya look at the time? Boy, I'd better get home or the wife will have my balls in a vice." They say stuff like that, but my dad never seems to get the hint. He likes to talk. Yammer, really. On and on for hours and hours so that his inattentive audience couldn't get a word in even if they tried. At least Vinny acknowledges that the other guy is talking every so often, but like my dad, everything that he hears becomes an opportunity to tell another long-winded story. It's like he's playing the prompt game. Rather than having a conversation, he takes whatever is said and turns it into prompt. Next, the prompt becomes the subject of a new story that diverts attention from the original story. When I was a kid, this was really annoying because this was back in the day when you could smoke in the gathering hall after church service let out. So as a kid in the '80s, as if an hour of church wasn't enough, Dad would sit in the gathering hall and smoke two or three packs of cigarettes while trying desperately to entertain whoever had the stamina to listen and waste the last few precious minutes of their last day off before a new work week. I swear to Christ the majority of his story-telling was just trying to remember unimportant details, like the name of the biker in the gay bar who was trying to score with the preacher's son who was giving a sermon about how being gay is un-Christian. Even stories that sound like they could have the potential to be a good story were decimated by Dad's inability to spin a yarn and keep it spun. His stories were more like train wrecks. He could try and tell of his days in Vietnam, for example, and the person listening would even lean in to hear the story only to find out that it wasn't a good story about the war--it was a story about the babysitter of a nephew of a guy he served with in Nam, and the babysitter was a pot head (or something like that). So yeah, my dad is a bad story teller. My brother learned from my dad--he learned how to _not_ tell a story and from that, he became a very gifted writer. To this day, he has about ten screenplays, one novel, and a couple novellas in the works. I recently asked my brother what the secret is to writing and my brother answered, "you have to have a point and a purpose. Sort of like the opposite of a story Dad would tell." In addition to telling horrible stories, my dad also forgets irrelevant details and struggles to fill in those needless parts of the anecdote. He might tell a story of a political campaign and then be bothered because he couldn't quite remember the last name of the politician's secretary's brother-in-law. Very needless details that waste precious time, you know? So anyway, back to the smoking in church thing. I said that my dad would smoke about three packs of cigarettes while mingling after church, and this isn't an exaggeration. I was only about seven or eight years old, so my under-developed lungs were experiencing a sort of shock from all the second-hand smoke. I developed asthma, and I think being forced to hang out in a dingy meeting hall (or is it a greeting hall?) had something to do with that. Luckily, I managed to make it out of the '80s alive and almost all-well. So the point of the story is, don't do drugs.
