Great question indeed! There is no functional reason for bluing screws. It's just the beauty of blue. Furthermore, movements look better with these blue screws. Historically oxidation was dealt with by cleaning....and more cleaning. The introduction of various bluing techniques addressed this issue. There are still wtchmakers who use the heated brass fillings to accomplish this result.
Tempering steel imparts different properties, the oxide layer that forms can indicate those properties. For example, when heating steel if it forms a yellow layer, it will be harder than blue. Blued steel is often called "spring" steel since thats the temper that imparts more springiness than lighter colors. It's a combination of not too hard but still hard and springy. This makes it good for screws, which, if they were too hard would cut into components or snap. Additionally, polishing and tempering steel creates a homogeneous surface that makes it more resistant to rust and corrosion.

That couldn't be more wrong honestly. The use of any tool has nothing to do with its place in history. Modern tools are created all the time and even designed well before the product itself is able to come to life.

The only non'-historical tool (though its' occurence certainly was) was when, in the dark antquity of Afrca, it was realized, likely fairly simultaneously by many individuals, that natural materials could be fashioned into objects (tools) that could be used to make their lives easier, and, crucially, how to pass this information on to others. To prove your point, please advise of any 'new' tool that has sprung from the mind of an inventor completely isolated from society. Though I should have said "almost by definiton" instead of "by definition" to clarify my meaning...
When you are poor and want to polish your watch screws, you buy a cheap dremel or proxxon and a chuck 4486 for ex. and carefully insert the screw, use a fine sandpaper glued to a flat metal and hope for the best 😁 works for my Ricohs...
That will be in conjunction with high lost of material of the screw head and the angle will be not precise (90 degrees) enough. But the method is quick and effective. Thank you for sharing ☺️
those screws are gorgeous. That antique tool for polishing the screws is ingenious. I can't stand seeing a watch that has been worked on and the screw slots are all chewed up, they should use the correct screwdriver and it wouldn't happen, you see it on guns a lot to. Great work.

The bluing on the steel is actually a coating, this prevents rust. That's why balance springs are blued.
@@RollaArtis They're blued for the temper which is the most springy. It's a functional temper and the oxide layer is secondary.
