President Bill Clinton bade farewell to General John Shalikashvili as the nation's top military leader on Tuesday, praising him as one of the greatest chairmen of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
A distinguished send-off for the man who has served in the U-S military for nearly four decades.
In recognition of General John Shalikashvili's service, Bill Clinton awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
The U-S President had high praise for his advisor and friend.
    (English)
"This is frankly a bittersweet day for me. I am full of pride but also some regret. For the last four years I have counted on Shali, for his wisdom, his counsel, his leadership. He has become an exceptional adviser and a good friend."
SUPER CAPTION: Bill Clinton, U-S President
Born in Warsaw, Poland in 1936, Shalikashvili emigrated to the United States with his family at the age of 18.
He rose up through the ranks - from a private to a four-star general.
    (English)
"Shali has filled a resume that would turn others olive drab with envy. In the last four years our troops have been tested in more than 40 operations, from Bosnia to Haiti, the Taiwan Straits, Iraq, Rwanda, Liberia and more. Our armed forces have performed superbly with Shali at the helm."
SUPER CAPTION: Bill Clinton, U-S President
Shalikashvili, stepping down after 39 years in the military, said it had been a pleasure to serve under Clinton.
But his final farewell went to the men under his command.
    (English)
"I will always remain one of you - a soldier."
SUPER CAPTION: General John Shalikashvili, outgoing Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff
Shalikashvili will be succeeded by General Henry H. Shelton, a Green Beret and decorated Vietnam War veteran.
