I would like to reflect on this some more. The perspectives you presented seem at odds with the deep appreciation I have for both nature and machinery. I do not see them as mutually exclusive, but view both as extensions of science and nature. I believe there are other forces such as greed behind the exploitation of the natural world which go far beyond necessity and benevolence, yet often masquerade themselves under that banner. Very thought provoking. Thank you.

There’s a nice collection of their correspondence over the years available that you might enjoy. Both are avid proponents of “The Old Ways”, Berry from a more Christian perspective, Snyder from a Buddhist/ecological one, but both very respective of each other’s views. Love your channel! Wonderful presentation! I am a Scotsman living in north-west Spain - and enjoyed watching this with a bowl of my own mixture (lightly spiced with drops of black rum). I will be seeking out Mr Berry's literature as he sounds like a man who is 'right up my street' (or country lane), as they say. Thanks for introducing Mr Berry to me. His view of society and our roles in it are refreshing and inspirational. The passage: “Work requires more time to prove its worth” so struck me that I wrote it down. Our current society places much more emphasis on speed than it does on quality and there is little willingness to observe and analyze the results of new ideas. Indeed, most “new” ideas are hailed as the path all should be on from the get go. Most “new” ideas are number one not new and number two the ideas were tried at some point in history and found wanting or it would not be just now rediscovered and thought to be “new”. A failure to learn from history is our current society’s grandest mistake. I admit that his statement struck a cord on a much more personal level for me. My daily efforts to improve my conditions are littered with attempts which over time prove to be no better and sometimes worse than the original. But when after time the new approach has proven itself the immense satisfaction gained more than compensates for the failed attempts. The long term is given much more importance in some cultures than our American culture does today. That is sad.
I enjoyed Mr. Berry’s perspective, there seems to be a fine line between working land and holdings for the benefit of others, while asking God each day for the grace to seek His kingdom rather than my own, to serve those He places in my path rather than serving myself, or I can work towards building my own kingdom and setting myself upon the throne of my holdings. I can allow the outside world to burn itself to the ground while I am safe within my locked gates. A farmer or a rancher can produce food, not only for his own family’s table but also for that of his neighbor’s and the rest of the world.
Alan, thank you so much for this insight into what is unfortunately a disappearing way of life. As a small retailer I can certainly identify with Mr. Barry's concern that we are not taking as much pride in our labors as our predecessors did. On a different level than the agrarian vs. industrial conflict, osmall retail's struggle to survive in the face of unrelenting assault by big corporations in bed with big government hit close to home with me. Thanks for another thoughtful and thought provoking video. By the way, I am probably violating one of the Ten Commandments, but I am lusting after that 1995 McClelland blend. I remember smoking it back in the day when it was still readily available, heavenly smokes. Keep puffin.
I recently came across *Washington at the Plow* by Bruce Ragsdale. Very good study of GW’s philosophy of farming and how he tried to put those principles to effect on his farms.
Very good post. " The best thing that can be said of a man is that he's a good farmer." And that was true in America right up to when Henry Ford started the assembly line. I find it ironic that Ford himself became fearful that we would lose our identity as farmers because of his mechanized mobilized world. So much so that he began to preserve the old ways of the old days at his Greenfield Village project. It was World War 2 I think that really accelerated our move toward modernist industrial influences that changed our perspective of ourselves from farmers to factory working industrialists. Of course with that the culture changed as well. That rural raised population with it's traditions and values now gave way to city dwelling and suburbanites who sat the course for American culture. I have to admit I'm much like Henry Ford. I to feel much more comfortable in the old America then the new one. That's not to say there aren't good things about today. And it's not to say there weren't bad things in the older America. But I feel the things that grow are more desirable then the things that are built.
Alan, your videos in this vain remind me of another youtube favorite of mine, Malcolm Guite. Hopefully some day soon the pipe cottage will offer some of these blends and pipes online. Out here in Arizona we can get none of these blends. Nice Job.

Fine video and good selection of readings from Mr. Berry. That poem, "Questionnaire" was extremely powerful. I always loved the writings of the famed "Southern Agrarians" especially those of Andrew Lytle, Robert Penn Warren, Alan Tate, etc. Also, throw in William Faulkner and Shelby Foote while we are at it, ha. This is food for the soul, no doubt. On a separate topic, sir do you ever smoke a meerschaum pipe or do you stay with briar and wood? My collection contains a great number of both. Thank you.

Something to think about the works of Mr Berry. I visited the battle of mill springs at Nancy Kentucky yesterday. It happened on the 19th of January. Very interesting.
Everytime I hear about McClelland, it breaks my heart. Finest tobacco ever made. I still have an unopened tin of Cellar. Great stuff. But I suppose that the reason why it was such good tobacco is also the same reason they closed down: they had supreme love and respect for their craft.
I consider myself to be a craftsman, and take pride in that. It cannot be concealed that we live in an Era where there is dwindling respect for craft of any sort. It has been substituted with the superficial gloss of uniformity. It is also directly reflected in the declining depth and quality of our lives and relationships across the broad expanse of our world as few put in the effort to achieve any sort of mastery of anything but leisure.

I am surprised that no commenters spoke about Wendell Berry's fiction. I am rarely a reader of fiction, but that is perhaps because I do not find anything to compare to Berry's fiction. I recommend Fidelity, a book of short stories, and Hannah Coulter as staring places, but there are few of his works that are not excellent.
I apologize and don't mean to take away from this excellent video and story but I would like to ask if you have any videos or would care to record some for those of us who are beginner pipe smokers on the subject of pipe cleaning, maintenance, ect. I know there are plenty of RUclips videos on the subject and many of them are excellent but I personally find something comforting and trustworthy in your delivery and any information you have to give. Interesting thoughts and indeed they are worthy of expansion and exploration. At its crux, this seems to resolve into how one approaches life -- where ever one finds him or herself. Do we approach what has been graciously with humility and the conviction to develop and utilize our talents and resources toward the betterment of all -- from those closest to us, to those far away whom we do not even know, to even or enemies? Or, do we sink into baser instincts of greed, selfishness, envy, and strife? As God spoke to Cain, "Sin is crouching at your door... but you must rule over it" (Gen 4, 6). Perhaps the contrast becomes more apparent when living closer to the earth, but virtue can be pursued in all walks of life. I consider it as walking a narrow path along a ridge with steep slopes to either side where losing footing on either side can cause harm -- we must not lose the great lessons of the past, and also not negate the possibilities of doing good for all through learning and thoughtfully applying that which is new. Above all, we must act in love for all and not become what CS Lewis called Men Without Chests in his wonderful essay titled the same.

Dr. Harrelson, Do you by any chance grow Ornamental, or what is sometimes called “Peace-pipe Tobacco”? If not, I would love to send you seeds from my own grown Ornamental “Peace-pipe” Tobacco. This tobacco produces small trumpet-shaped flowers, which emit a sweet fragrance, particularly after sunset, and throughout the night. It is one of my favorite plant/flowers that I grow. I grew my tobacco from seeds sent to me from a friend of 37 years. The seeds came from plants which were growing in the backyard of his home, in Detroit, Michigan; he did not plant these plants himself. The plants produce so many seeds, that they self propagate.

Very good post. " The best thing that can be said of a man is that he's a good farmer." And that was true in America right up to when Henry Ford started the assembly line. I find it ironic that Ford himself became fearful that we would lose our identity as farmers because of his mechanized mobilized world. So much so that he began to preserve the old ways of the old days at his Greenfield Village project. It was World War 2 I think that really accelerated our move toward modernist industrial influences that changed our perspective of ourselves from farmers to factory working industrialists. Of course with that the culture changed as well. That rural raised population with it's traditions and values now gave way to city dwelling and suburbanites who sat the course for American culture. I have to admit I'm much like Henry Ford. I to feel much more comfortable in the old America then the new one. That's not to say there aren't good things about today. And it's not to say there weren't bad things in the older America. But I feel the things that grow are more desirable then the things that are built.
Another good video. Boswell’s dropped eight pipes last night(1/23/23). One was a Churchwarden. I couldn’t get to it quick enough and it was gone.

Alan, your videos in this vain remind me of another youtube favorite of mine, Malcolm Guite. Hopefully some day soon the pipe cottage will offer some of these blends and pipes online. Out here in Arizona we can get none of these blends. Nice Job.

Fine video and good selection of readings from Mr. Berry. That poem, "Questionnaire" was extremely powerful. I always loved the writings of the famed "Southern Agrarians" especially those of Andrew Lytle, Robert Penn Warren, Alan Tate, etc. Also, throw in William Faulkner and Shelby Foote while we are at it, ha.
This is food for the soul, no doubt.
On a separate topic, sir do you ever smoke a meerschaum pipe or do you stay with briar and wood? My collection contains a great number of both. Thank you.

Love the video! I'd love to see you talk about some C.S. Lewis stuff. I know he's not necessarily agrarian, but he's very intellectually stimulating and I think would compliment a pipe quite well.

Everytime I hear about McClelland, it breaks my heart. Finest tobacco ever made. I still have an unopened tin of Cellar. Great stuff. But I suppose that the reason why it was such good tobacco is also the same reason they closed down: they had supreme love and respect for their craft.
I consider myself to be a craftsman, and take pride in that. It cannot be concealed that we live in an Era where there is dwindling respect for craft of any sort. It has been substituted with the superficial gloss of uniformity.
It is also directly reflected in the declining depth and quality of our lives and relationships across the broad expanse of our world as few put in the effort to achieve any sort of mastery of anything but leisure.

I am surprised that no commenters spoke about Wendell Berry's fiction. I am rarely a reader of fiction, but that is perhaps because I do not find anything to compare to Berry's fiction. I recommend Fidelity, a book of short stories, and Hannah Coulter as staring places, but there are few of his works that are not excellent.

I apologize and don't mean to take away from this excellent video and story but I would like to ask if you have any videos or would care to record some for those of us who are beginner pipe smokers on the subject of pipe cleaning, maintenance, ect. I know there are plenty of RUclips videos on the subject and many of them are excellent but I personally find something comforting and trustworthy in your delivery and any information you have to give. Interesting thoughts and indeed they are worthy of expansion and exploration. At its crux, this seems to resolve into how one approaches life -- where ever one finds him or herself. Do we approach what has been graciously with humility and the conviction to develop and utilize our talents and resources toward the betterment of all -- from those closest to us, to those far away whom we do not even know, to even or enemies? Or, do we sink into baser instincts of greed, selfishness, envy, and strife? As God spoke to Cain, "Sin is crouching at your door... but you must rule over it" (Gen 4, 6). Perhaps the contrast becomes more apparent when living closer to the earth, but virtue can be pursued in all walks of life. I consider it as walking a narrow path along a ridge with steep slopes to either side where losing footing on either side can cause harm -- we must not lose the great lessons of the past, and also not negate the possibilities of doing good for all through learning and thoughtfully applying that which is new. Above all, we must act in love for all and not become what CS Lewis called Men Without Chests in his wonderful essay titled the same.

However grateful we may be for these corporate benefits, they are not enough. Our humanity is more demanding...
For the first time on your channel, at the beginning and end of this video, I saw several commercials. I mention this because I’ve heard you say more than once that RUclips doesn’t allow ads for videos about tobacco. So you should know that if you are not allowed to make money talking about tobacco, RUclips makes that money instead of you. I should point out that I am outside the USA. But this rule applied anyway, until this video.

Do you by any chance grow Ornamental, or what is sometimes called “Peace-pipe Tobacco”? If not, I would love to send you seeds from my own grown Ornamental “Peace-pipe” Tobacco. This tobacco produces small trumpet-shaped flowers, which emit a sweet fragrance, particularly after sunset, and throughout the night. It is one of my favorite plant/flowers that I grow.
I grew my tobacco from seeds sent to me from a friend of 37 years. The seeds came from plants which were growing in the backyard of his home, in Detroit, Michigan; he did not plant these plants himself. The plants produce so many seeds, that they self propagate.
