Why it's the end for Halo...

  • We are witnessing the end of the Halo franchise in real time. 343 is incompetent and Microsoft seems to be jumping ship. I wouldn't call the future of Halo 'uncertain' at this point like others are I would call it just a matter of time. Microsoft is jumping ship. They've got Bethesda, they're trying to get Activision Blizzard, Halo isn't their priority anymore and I don't even think they'll continue it at the rate things are going.

Halo naturally aged out by the time Bungie left. It was dead well over 10 years ago. Now it’s a cold, corporate husk. Halo was a product of its era, with its unique grungy-anime aesthetic, of the late 90’s. Nowadays, you’re expected to put out a game with both photorealistic graphics and a script equivalent to a 2 part theater drama. I just miss when Halo was a fun game. Red vs Blue.

    • @BrokenCircle1
      @BrokenCircle1  Год назад +16

Yes I can totally see where you're coming from as far as aging out. I made a video a while ago talking about this how 343 has only really maintained Halo which was a tired formula back in the day and they even do a bad job of that.
IMO Halo really needs to go for larger scale battles and bigger world building to actually be cool but that's just me.

Are you kidding? Were you even alive back then? Halo was at the peak of its popularity when Bungie left. It was a huge shock to everyone because it was stupidly obvious to _everyone_ how much potential Halo had for more games, books, etc. Bungie leaving it was, at the time, viewed as an utterly moronic decision. Throwing the goose that lays golden eggs right off a cliff. And we were right. That was an insanely stupid thing to do, as Bungie has learned the hard way since then. It never "aged out" or anything like that. In fact, if you look at the time and popularity, you will see the _only_ reason it faded in popularity was Halo 4. And this got a lot worse with Halo 5. 343i coming along and shitting on it and the players is _not_ "aging out". If anything, it shows just how durable Halo's legacy and popularity is that it's _still_ popular in spite of 343i and Microsoft's efforts to break it.

Halo fans have always been a breed cut from the rest, we are the best, just look at its modding community. The final nail in the coffin for a franchise is if it can no longer generate profit. Much like Star Wars, 343 refused to listen to what the fans wanted, then proceeded to mock them for it and instead market to the "broader audience" (by trying to market to everyone) Then you have the "fans" (if you could even call them that) that will defend all of 343's bad decisions and call the real fans toxic for providing valid criticism. And look where it got them.

I have been following this game and its development for a year and a half now and the ONLY time I saw a 343 hater give actual valuable, tangible feedback was when the youtuber pop2q said 343 should change their name. That's it. I swear, if it wasn’t for the several big name Halo RUclipsrs and awesome/passionate community holding on for dear life, this game would be done for. I haven’t played infinite or MCC in over a year and don’t have any desire to return anytime soon :/

I have been preaching for YEARS about their level of incompetence and how they needed to be replaced. I understand, that there are a million moving pieces involved in making a game, and know that not every single mistake isn’t their fault. But you can’t tell me that after all these years the countless major missteps taken with this franchise doesn’t fall on them.

If you make a diluted product that aims to appeal to everyone, it will get an equally diluted response. Sure you cast a wide net, but that net is very weak and most people will go "eh, cool I guess." and not really become a loyal customer. If you instead focus on making a REALLY strong experience for a specific audience, that smaller audience will be enthralled by your product and come back for more, which overall generates MORE money, nevermind a more satisfied customer base.

Halo went from a franchise that set the standard for console FPS games that have been copied to this day (2-weapon limits, grenades/melee as a button press rather than a separate weapon, aim assist, regenerating health, etc.), raised the bar with each entry (i.e. introducing community-made content via Forge WAY ahead of the curve), etc. to a generic trend-chaser slopfest that regresses each game, trying to chase some different popular-at-the-time thing. ("Ooooh COD is popular, let's do that!" = Halo 4, "OHHH Titanfall is the big new thing, people want ADHD parkour shooters!" = Halo 5, "No no no, I got it this time guys, what people want is an open-world ubisoft game with bandit camps and other generic slop, with a live-service multiplayer!" = Halo (In)finite.)
Halo's death and the butchering of it's lore is perhaps the greatest tragedy of gaming history. "The bigger they are, the harder they fall."

As far as anything official goes the franchise is almost certainly a corpse. Thankfully now that MCC is on pc with mod support it will be able to stay alive the same way Half Life did through constant user generated content. Hopefully Digsite (restoring cut content for modders to use) is still happening, but that’s a bit of a stretch since a good chunk of 343 has been canned.
I remember I was one of the people who got duped into thinking Infinite would be great because the marketing was going strong, they reverted the art style and gave us the best of both world as far as gameplay was concerned, and a lot of the people I watched were hyping it up. I had a lot of fun playing the game, but it got repetitive after a while and I haven’t touched it since I beat the game. If Firefight comes back I’ll reinstall the game because I’m a weirdo who mostly just cares about PvE instead of the multiplayer. I’ve seen some really cool stuff made with the new custom games and Forge mode (there’s all kinds of INSANE maps). Unfortunately, the game still lacks so much that’s needed to keep the thing alive. Some people have said it could turn around like what happened with MCC, but that wouldn’t be for several years. It’s basically dead as far as mainstream appeal is.
In order to save the thing you’d probably need to reboot the series with a CE remake akin to what we got with Dead Space and Resident Evil where it takes what works from across the series and uses that as a base to recreate the game. If done right that would be great. But I simply do not trust 343 to do that.
One thing about Infinite I think we can all agree is great is the fact that shock weapons allow you to “zap to the extreme” like Sonichu. Honestly this franchise would’ve been in better hand if Chris Chan and Jacob Sockness were both running it😂

@@BrokenCircle1 There is one thing that I think can be "blamed", for want of a better term, on the fanbase.
It does seem like, at the least, they could have either finished Halo on Halo 3 and left things wide open for a future installment, or let Halo 4 be the finale.
But sometimes it feels like the fanbase gets eager for a new episode because Halo is an important part of their life. And for many, it was either helping them in the trials of growing up - for those with a hard life - or perhaps represented simpler times.
In other words, depending on which release they jumped in, they want to be that same kid who was playing Halo CE, or 2, or Reach, etc.
Sad part is, that person is gone. They will never feel the same way they felt before, even if Infinite had everything everybody ever wanted and was perfect in every way. It's impossible. Nobody can "go home" as is said. I see the same thing happening with long-playing MMOs like WoW and Eve Online. The bitter vets will always be bitter, because the memory of the good times or the relief of escape are just out of reach - and it's not like life is better being older.
And this, I think, is what drives 343 to keep milking it; entirely driven by money. If they were true storytellers and fans of what they were creating they could maintain that love. Hopefully this is the end, not out of bitterness or disappointment, but to see people finally move on. Better things will come when we can let go.

There is nothing we can do about the current state of things, I loved Halo and started playing around 2010 when Reach came out I was only 9 or 10 at that time. But to play a game for 10 or more years of you're life and remember the vibrancy and player base there once was and see that then reduced to nothing is very sad. I remember in the final weeks on Reach before Halo 4's release there was 300,000-500,000 players at one time in the player count box. Back then in 2012 that was alot of people for Xbox 360. But yeah it's all gone now but hey it is what it is. The times I played Halo and completed multiple different Legendary campaigns and grinded achievements was some of the best times of my life I was very proud of what I achieved it was an awesome escape from life at that age but again such is life.

Ive always been on Halo 4's side, as i enjoyed its concentration on Chief and Cortana's relationship. Particularly, it also explores OUR relationship with the Chief. For years, we've been experiencing the Human-Covenant War much like him--a badass, bullet-slinging super soldier doing everything in his power to give humanity a fighting chance. In Halo 4, we see him struggle to understand what he is without that conflict, when the people he fought to protect have learned to protect themselves--when he's become outdated--all punctuated with the loss of his last true close friend, Cortana. Not to mention, in universe developments post-war held intrigue and possibility, primarily the fractured subfactions of the Covenant vying for power, the last terrible vestiges of the Forerunner's legacy becoming an issue with the Didact, and the UNSC's place in a humanity not at threat of annihilation to justify their existence. Plus, the new tech looked cool as hell, and I had fun with the multiplayer. It wasnt perfect, but i could still taste some amount of passion remaining in its devs, passion that inspired likewise within me and my friends to see where this new age of Halo would go.
But it's undeniable that this was probably the peak of 343's abilities and, while I adored 4, it shouldn't have been the company's best. MCC, 5 and finally Infinite showed time and again that they were not up to snuff with the quality we knew, no matter how many chances we gave them. And so intrigue into new stories, new characters and new frontiers became regret and spite for confused messes trying to ride the next gaming trend or the old Halo nostalgia. Retcons, bad business practices and messy writing are but a few damning pieces of blame 343 has to bear. Infinite was the first time I gave up on halo. Ive been a fan since i was a kid, my sister too and my dad. It was one of my first games and I was enamored from the start. So to go from an unshakeable fan to writing off Halo as a viable series...man, it felt like my childhood dog died. Then, you have the Halo TV series making a further mockery of the universe, just to rub salt in the wound.
343 didnt just run Halo into the ground, they desecrated everything that it was--both to its fans and to the gaming genre in general. Halo was one of the early kings of gaming, and now it'll fade into obscurity because its legacy was torn to shreds and dragged through the mud. And I'm sad to say I see this as a trend in gaming recently. Alongside 343, you have all these gaming giants becoming, at best, mid. Blizzard is a joke compared to its early reputation--it's fumbled Warcraft, Diablo, Heroes of the Storm and Overwatch like a toddler in the Superbowl. If epic failure really isn't your taste, then you have AAA studios settling with mediocrity to rake in the dough with little effort. CoD has always been the butt of this joke, but it's hard not to see why, when each subsequeny title tries less and less to distinguish itself from the others and, more importantly, to justify you buying it. And the Pokemon franchise, one of the highest selling franchises in the world, is putting out half-baked games with barely any optimization and quality control. On the general, games are being released unfinished, riddled with bugs and glitches that need day one patches to function. I mean, just this year you have Redfall and the Lord of the Ring: Gollum, some of the absolute bottom of the barrel, mobile-game ass things to be released. It's a shitshow. And yes, while we have gems still presenting themselves, like Tears of the Kingdom and Deep Rock Galactic, the gaming genre has on average declined in quality and competitive drive that made games interesting: I'd rather we return to an age where competition forced games to experiment to make their mark, even if they failed. I only somewhat hesitate to declare this era as a Dark Age of Gaming, only because of the dramaticness of it.
Tl;dr 100% agree 343 shit the bed with their treatment of Halo and its fans, and it feels more and more that this is becoming a genre-wide trend of releasing buggy and uninteresting schlock in the pursuit of easy money.

I never played COD, never got into R6S or anything. Halo 5 was my childhood, and MCC carried me all the way through COVID. I have played all the campaigns, spent well over a thousand hours controlling spartans on screen, and had some of the best days of my life at sleepovers up late playing forge in splitscreen Reach.
I never got into any other FPS games. I had a short stint at CS:GO, a bit of Valorant here and there, and I truly loved Doom: Eternal; yet none of these had quite the same taste, the same feeling, as Halo. I don't think I ever will. The closest I've ever gotten is Arma, which gives me the social fun aspect while sacrificing some of the high-octane gameplay you see in intense Halo matches and simply doesn't have any form of campaign. It's been a great eight years. But Halo is dying, and I can feel my enthusiasm for gaming slipping along with it. I never got to experience halo in its golden age, but even going through lore channels, old gameplay clips, and watching the cinematic campaigns as if I were watching a movie, I fell in love with the franchise.
And despite the content drought between halo 5 and Halo Infinite, I remember there was an abundance of halo RUclipsrs covering halo news and theories. Like the community actually felt alive and thriving.
The hype that surrounded Halo Infinite simply being announced was phenomenal, and felt like the franchise was about to return to the top of FPS.
Post Halo Infinite launched was possibly the worst experience I’ve ever had Halo. So much was missing, so much time spent waiting, all the while friends were leaving the game.
Halo RUclipsrs went from genuine content before Infinite, to quick, sensationalized videos to compensate for the lack of content to cover. Sean W and HaloFollower are two channels that completely shifted their content to being more sensationalized and less genuine. But eventually, most channels, even the ones who stayed true to their authenticity, either stopped covering Halo, and hardly posted as regularly as they did.
It’s one thing when I feel apathy for a game that I loved, but when I see genuine RUclipsrs with channels dedicated to Halo, and whom grew up with the franchise far longer than myself, just look so disappointed and defeated, it’s just depressing.

I remember lines used to form with people camping in tents to pre order Halo 3 and Reach.
It used to be everyone had Halo and during the Bungie days with OG Reach there was a ranking system that had normal military ranks until you got really high up in rank you got titles like 'Eclipse, Inheritor, and Forerunner' it was truly amazing. I've never understood why 343 got rid of that.

I would fine if there were no more games maybe even books, because while yes I would be sad I cant trust 343i to make another game, and also I believe that halo was a product of it's time and perhaps it wouldn't fit into todays modern gamimg lanscape. I think that a small crew should be assigned to maintaining MCC sort of like a museum of past games and provide updates and fix problems.

I think the biggest thing that differentiates 343 from bungie is that bungie was so skilled and relented with their coding and developing of the game, that they had the time and freedom to fuck around exploring new ideas and concepts. (Sprint in halo 2, firefight, all the wacky game modes
And so much more, even skyboxes when you compare them to 343s lazy and drab generic vistas. Then you have 343 which is so overwhelmingly incompetent that they fall behind on development and don’t even have enough time to push out the stuff that bungie would’ve done in the first year as a base before injecting their creativity and brainstorming into. 343 just simply doesn’t have any mental or emotional connection to halo simply because it isn’t their invention and they shouldn’t have inherited it. They halo fandom can be a bit overly sensitive of the games but that’s because we knew it was something special and that the team that worked on it went the extra mile each release to drop something truly unique and different and you could just feel the soul oozing out of the scenery and visuals of the games alone. 343 doesn’t have this. There’s a saying that a box handcrafted with love and care can give off an unmistakable aura of warmth, while a box made artificially will give off an aura of cold and discomfort, and the latter really does fit well with 343 industries handling of a once loved IPs legacy. All I gotta say is fuck anyone at the top echelon of the decision making for halo nowadays, you all are worse than useless in the eyes of the fans from the glory days

Well said. I recently noticed something looking at a picture of the 343 devs on their website, it was a group photo and I noticed unlike old Bungie the vast majority of 343 devs look quite young and inexperienced. I also have an inkling many of them were hired for the wrong reasons, that is speculative but there is some evidence to support that.

Fully agree with everything you said. It pains me to see Halo in this state. But I kept my expectations low with 343 at the helm of Infinite. Even so I couldn't have prepared for this level of disappointment. 343, despite what anyone says, does not and never did have a vision for Halo. They just wanted another money making machine. Halo has always been about the single player for me. And the direction they took the lore in was just inexplicably moronic. I thought with a Bungie era employee still in play, they would do the franchise justice but Frank O' Connor turned out to be the biggest twat of them all.
Even with their history, the Infinite announcement trailer gave me some hope with the return to original art style and the music. But as the game drew closer to launch, it became abundantly clear to me that this was going to be as horrible as the previous 2 games.
And you hit the nail on the head, Frank O'Connor, Kiki Wolfkill and Bonnie Ross should be banned from working in this industry ever again ! I would also like to add Brian Reed to that list.
The Halo RUclipsrs like UberNick, Mint Blitz, Harsupis and others who praise 343 for doing the bare minimum a year after the game has launched is just so annoying. The game launched in such a pathetic state with no credit system, no XP and a campaign that looked and felt like a beta. The story was so unconnected and pathetic. And anytime 343 pushed an update that was asked for by the fans from day 1, they treat it like some huge achievement for AAA studio. A studio who does not know their fans. These guys, if they called out 343 like MoistKritical did, would light a fire under them. But I think Microsoft is too consumed by greed anyways.
I am thankful for the modders who still make such amazing improvements to the trilogy. As far as I am concerned the series ended with Reach. Everything else is non canon for me.
    Goodbye Halo.

Like in popularity compared to the old titles, sucks for everybody because that is a determinate factor for succed, but with the community mods and the really huge love that many people have for this franchise, i think that right now in the modern gaming is in a good place, activity, community, and passion sufficient to be in that spot, many people right now can play the old games from a really easy and nearly perfect versions for this games, there is a true aprecciation that is gonna last long thanks to it that's for sure, that is from that side.
The other thing is bussiness and infinite, i don't think that from 343 halo is in an really awful scenario in the moment like everyone is saying, and that is because one of the main problems that the franchise had with 343, was the awful managment and how many times they were incompetent in directives, the game was in a really good way for the mayority of people, the huge concern was that is unfinished for content in the story mode and multiplayer, and the reasons for that were all of them the fault for planing everything bad, but with the changes from that department, setting mostly people that had a good record and that the important one have demonstrated true great job that required a good understanding in what the people wanted and directing it from that way, i think that now is for the leasted in decents hands from the direction guys of the company. And sorry if this is petty, but come on guys from all the companies that want money like crazy, microsoft is not gonna let go his main reconisable franchise because they had a huge fuck up with a game, and its to late in the industry to give the main things of the franchise to another studio and also its nearly an imposible job for circuntances to find and or charge the right developer for the job, nobody in market is gonna let go opportunity to not try again, because infinite in one point had like a million players and was beloved in many aspects that they had finally accomplished a formula that a random that will not notice to capitalize on it again making sure that is the right opportunity since that stroke, the marketing of modern xbox is competent enough to know that. That are my reasons why halo for now is not dying, is just in really bad times but no in the type of decaying himself.
Just one more point, 8:27 that thing really far from what is happening right now with halo, because to go with saturating the franchise with that example, you need to have way more games from the 2 that have sinse halo 5, and for quality alone people can say that the games suck but chip produced they aren't, there are many signs of middle or huge production in them and well developed enough in areas of the games specially in infinite.

Since halo 4 I’ve been losing more and more interest in the games media etc. because to me personally it just doesn’t have the same feel or appeal. The appeal of halo for me was that we (humanity) were the underdogs trying our best to fight against unrealistic odds for survival. Out gunned out maned but we still fought for survival. And we the legendary John 117 were humanities last hope. Even back when we were still discovering what exactly the forerunners were or who they were. But that era is over. It feels like the soul that made halo is long gone and weirdly enough I’m ok with that. I’d rather halo end with reach and those memories be preserved how they were then watch my favorite franchise slowly bleed out on life support. Some things are better off just ending.

Thinking about Halo just makes me sad. I played Reach-4 with my dad who isn't much of a gamer, hell he still has a hard time walking around, but when they said that they'll bring back splitscreen after 5 I was super excited for Infinite, we had the old armor, we had a new and arguably more interesting faction than Jul 'Mdama's Covenant (who they killed in a cutscene of all places!), and we were going to get an in depth armor customization! Only for all of it to be ripped from us. Splitscreen never came to be, even though it works via bugs, the faction I was so excited to face had its leader "die" off screen, only for it to turn out he was still alive (so that was pointless), and armor customization that is dependent on cores!? I'll admit I started Halo with 5 (as I was too young to experience the other titles), but rest assured I found the original titles a lot more fun, with that said though, I think I'm done. I'd rather play sins of the prophets, a mod to another game made by the Halo community rather than watch another Halo show, or play another game.
