Dr Sunshine is dead - Batman AU Animatic

- WARNING: Disturbing imagery (depictions of anxiety and mental breakdown), and flashy colors (epilepsy).
Yeah, after two doctors of Arkham Asylum, I decided to give video for one of my favourite 3 Batman Rogues - Killer Moth. As he is mostly underdeveloped joke character, I took him back to his Silver Age roots as anti-Batman, and rewrote him basing on this mere idea. Two biggest changes I included is making him arab-american and changing his mental problems from minor to pretty severe. I also focused on the bat and moth dynamic - darkness and light, predator and pray. I see Daeej as accidental victim of Batman's crusade, who strives for equity by all cost.
...Gosh, this is the longest video I've done on this channel o_o

Something appreciate is how Killer Moth, at least before he puts on the costume, even looks a bit like a moth. The ears look like wings, his nose looks like that long needle thing (don’t know what it’s called) and his ever growing hair and beard looks like a moths fluff
Proboscis I think
I wonder if for his mask, Daeej might have equipped his lenses with those special anti-glare filters that are used for those night-time driving glasses?
I can see this Killer Moth becoming a rogue by breaking out everyone in Arkham, while trying to hunt down Hugo Strange so he can explain why he's having memories he can't understand. It also gives him a great weakness, forcing the storyteller to be creative in how Killer Moth confronts Batman (Like utilizing flashbangs)
I can imagine that there's a story from his perspective, where in the end the person he thought was trying to hurt him wasn't actually who he thought it was.
Maybe it could've been another member of the bat family, trying to stop him from doing something that would hurt himself
@@sev1120 it could have also been Manbat.
Great point
I do feel like Killer Moth needs a bit more of a backstory than 'goon with weird costume and net gun', and like the idea of using the idea of moths being attracted to light being the inspiration for the moth costume (when bats eat moths for breakfast)
That or make him an actual moth like in in TT
Also,it creates a interesting dynamic between him and batman, because he uses light, which is generally associated with good, and bats uses darkness (mostly associated with evil),but in this, the roles would be reversed, with light being bad and dark good
This man’s electric bill must rival the budget of small countries my god
Yea i hope he have much money
Maybe that’s why he turned to supervillainy.
@@spongeintheshoe
… good god!
its canon hes actually a billionare im pretty sure
I can barely understand the rampant yelling but, honestly that doesn't make it worse, it makes it better for me, it really adds to that frantic atmosphere where he is breaking down just trying to stay away from the dark, and in those final shots, it starts to slow down, as he finally snapped, no more clouded thoughts, just finally snapped
for you or any who couldn't hear the text in the end
I will be my sunshine, I will be my Moon at night
Who else could I be, when I can't hardly see?
I will be my sunshine, I will be my Moon at night
I'm no one now here's no one now to be
And if dreams can come true, what does that say about nightmares?
I'll stay awake tonight
I feel the same
okay i have to praise the wordless storytelling here: even if you didnt have the song to accompany it, you get a clear look at who “Drury” is, what ails him, and how he develops into what he is. holy shit dude.
The idea of killer moth being afraid of the dark because of a traumatic event is the perfect kind of idea to revamp him and make him more interesting the same way the animated series did for mr freeze
Oh, dang. That's actually a really clever lead-in. At first I expected him to turn out to be Dr. Light or something, but the light attracting all the moths does thematically put him as a good mirror to the Bat.
Welp. This guy bills for electricity will be sky rocket at this rate. Not counting all this light bulb X-D
Wonderful pice of work.
Yeah, this is kinda plothole ^^"
And thank you!
Maybe that's why he resorted to crime, that bill won't pay itself XD
or maybe a loved one passed away and he uses his money from the will, and the reason why he's not in a mansion or 5 star hotel, he just thinks it's "too much" and "an easy way to lose money"
@@adamf.charles5857 its Gotham they probally have alot more issues to deal with
Probably got like a few thousand for participating in that lobotomy in Arkham.
I have absolutely zero context on this so I don't know if this is intentional but I think the name Drury is a reference to Dru Drury. He was an entomologist who discovered several moth species.
Oh I didnt knew that! Its so cool?
Makes sense that killer moth’s name is in reference to a guy who discovered a bunch of moth species
this is a very cool and serious animatic but rewatching it every time Drury´s nose poppin up from under the mask gives me joy
This is probably the best dc animatic I’ve seen. The art is flawless and you captured all of the emotions perfectly. I could feel Drury’s descent into madness.
"Sanity declaration" from Arkham Asylum is as accurate and substantial as toilet paper xd
@@adamf.charles5857 toilet paper still does its job the declaration ehh

I didn’t get at first who this was about, then the name “Drury Walker” appeared, and it instantly clicked.
Honestly, I like Killer Moth as a Batman Villain, I get he’s mainly a joke villain but I feel if DC tried, they could very well give him a very sympathetic backstory to make him more than just a joke.
I especially love the connection with Moths, like them, he sticks with light because he’s afraid of what lurks in the Dark, in his eyes, he’s the prey, and Batman is the Predator, and I love that. I also love the little bits he gathers in his mind, pretty much him trying to regain the memories he once lost, the family he once had, the life he once lived.
You did such a great job here, and I honestly want to see stuff like this for more Batman Villains.
Well you can check out rest of my channel!
Bros energy bill is off the charts
I like the idea that while this Killer Moth may not be too much of a threat to Batman on a physical or intellectual level, he still manages to throw the detective off his game by taking away his closest friend, the shadows, making him a deadly element when in combination with a villain who packs a bit more muscle in their armory
I personally love idea of The Misfits, as gang of Joke Villains squatting in some abadoned house and hanging out, kinda like Harley Quinn show did. Catman, Calculator, Calendarman, Magpie and Firefly (the second one), maybe Ratcatcher and Eraser as cameos
I think there was a fanfic about that
I know how late I am but I have to point out that the artist also made concept art for all the villains they are planning on appearing before they made any of the animatics, and in Killer Moths he wields a shotgun wich is honestly incredibly menacing because of the combination with his removal of Batman’s shadows. Imagine trying to sneak up on a shotgun wielding insane person in a large room when there’s not a shadow in sight…
@@woodsylightningwhere can i find the concept art?
@@woodsylightningso if it was a Arkham game he would shine a spot light on you and just shoot you
I know im a year late but this is exactly what im talking about . Every character can be taken seriously if they have a good writer and be given enough time to at least learn about the character , just look at what they did with kite man in the comic called war of jokes and riddles .
I know i've already commented but I just wanted to say that the plot hole of "how he pay his light bill" could be easily solved by just assuming Bruce Wayne is paying for it. He would obviously feel bad about what Dury is going through, probably relating to his tragic past, and the fact that he sent him into arkham where Hugo jabbed around in his brain, and would just pay his expenses. As for how he didn't notice the ocean of moths amassing on a extremely well-lit building? I mean he's a busy guy maybe he was out with dinner or something man idk
Well there is also the questions of, What is Dury doing when not in his apartment? Does he have a Job? ect, and what exactly is the timeframe for this breakdown, if the lighting up of his apartment and his making of the costume happen close enough together then, the question is moot because he goes off to be Killer moth before his electric bill becomes an issue. I could buy the final breakdown of, buying lights-horrible dreams-make a costume happening in less than 24 hours, or even just a few hours, as a culmination of weeks to months of trying to manage with his horrible yet faceless fear.
Yeah doesn't Bruce own some of those ... I think there called half way homes?
Or, y’know, maybe paying those bills is part of why he turned to crime?
This is such a cool take on killer moth, it actually makes him pretty tragic, and sympathetic as opposed to him just being the joke villain.
Well, he is still comedic, but you feel guilty for laughing at poor guy... 2019 JOKER vibes
@@adamf.charles5857 hell ya
So almost like kiteman
it's weird that he's even considered a joke villain sure he's not a huge threat but he's a criminal master mind who discovered batman's identity like three times and now in the infinite crisis he's being revamped to be the "villain batman sharpened his skills to beat "
@@JamesJohnson-dl9iy also one of his oldest in both irl and his Canon existence in one recent work Batman says what is scary about killer moth is he will break theme if he feels that it is necessary...and double that break. Including training three bears to attack batman
This animatic really gives us an insight of what goes on within Moth’s mind, which is excellently portrayed!
But I can’t imagine this poor dude’s electricity bill.
Yeah, the general concept of this AU is basically "hey bats? You might wanna reconsider how you operate some, starting with vetting your criminal rehabilitation locations" isn't it
I don't know if this is intentional or not but I love how the two hairs on Walker look like moth antennas.
And ears are wings >:)
Wow I'm just realizing that now, thats crazy the detail you put into it.
When did I become afraid of the dark?
Are my eyeballs just yet to adjust to seeing the light?
The room I'm in is still the same, the shadows have not rearranged it
No, the only thing that's changed is how I see at night
I fumble for the switch and strap on infrareds
And wish for sunshine when the morning's somewhere else
But I can't change what time it is or dilate my irises
Only what I look at, and I'm looking at myself
I am not the sunshine, I am not the moon at night
Well, who else could I be when I can't hardly see?
I am not the sunshine, I am not the moon at night
I'm no one if I'm nowhere in between
When did I become afraid of the dark?
Was it when I left the cave and swore I'd never go back?
If we can't see each other, then there's no more use for hiding
I've decided I'll abide it, why deny the color black?
I'm not a flower, not a solar-powered calculator
Damn my eyes for seeing what's not there
I'll trade in vision for a practiced intuition
Till my fears come to fruition I'm not scared
I am not the sunshine, I am not the moon at night
Well, who else could I be when I can't hardly see?
I am not the sunshine, I am not the moon at night
I'm no one if I'm nowhere in between
The future must know where you've been
The past predicts the state you're in
The present did and will not last
Is, isn't, was, have, hasn't, has
All that I ask is keep those empty frames
If nobody's in them, then no one is to blame
For your self-portraits, sign another name
Well, who should I be then, if I'll never be the same?
I will be my sunshine, I will be my moon at night
Who else could I be when I can't fucking see?
I will be my sunshine, I will be my moon at night
I'm nowhere now, here's no one now to be
And if dreams can come true, what does that say about nightmares?
I'll stay awake tonight
I'm looking forward to the day you release a Kite-Man animatic, he's such an underated and tragic character.
Kite-man is the DC equivalent of Sandman. He's not a murderer or a psychopath, he's just a Thief trying to make enough money so he could quit and live comfortably for the rest of his life, while also having a sick child that needs alot of medicine.
He really shined in the JokerVsRiddler Storyline.
Kite Man, Hell Yeah.
This is BEAUTIFUL. I love how you turned Killer Moth (who is my favorite DC villain) into something more than just a joke. Well done :D 👏🏻
You've done the impossible. Make me care about a throwaway villain.
You know that Dr. Strange ain't sh*t when he botches A LOBOTOMY. Which he probably hadn't even performed in the first place just to see how the dude will react outside.

You know, this remind me of Mr Freeze's treatment in BTAS, before that he was mainly a joke, but the show made him the complex and tragic character that we know him as now. This is pretty much the same.
See, give this to the people making live action Batman lately, or DCEU movies in general.
The hallucination imagery is surreal and frightening (on that note, i'd love to see what you would do with jonathan crane 🤔), Moth is super emotive, and the whole thing really makes you feel for this poor goof.
THIS is how you make characters and settings dark and tragic without making it so gratuitously edgy and ""rEaLiStIc"" that it hardly seems like Batman and it's no fun anymore.
Major props, dude 👍

A very probable origin story for Killer Moth, DC should employ you
word cant express how much i love this, plus as a will wood fan this makes me happy.
I'm gonna say it... this is best take on Killer Moth I've seen so far.
I love how you managed to turn him into this interesting, sympathetic villain that retains all the themes of the OG Killer Moth. The themes of light, the fantastic visual story telling with the light and the batman, all wrapped together by a song from one of my favorite indie pop/rock artists of all time...
It's all fantastic, and I'd kill to see more of this guy and all the other rogues from this world in action in a comic or something like that.
guy who did the surgery: he's sane don't worry guys
Drury: * laughs eerily in the background *
WHAT THE FUCK THIS IS SO OBSCURE AND TWO OF MY FAVORITE THINGS WILL WOOD AND OBSCURE BATMAN ROGUES???? I'm sorry but holy shit how did the two things go together so well 😭
Holy, I love this take on the Killer Moth character! I always saw him as an extremely versatile character due to how little he was used beyond being a joke. Seeing this design and story for him really blew my hopes for the character through the roof. I want Killer Moth to be in a movie as something more than a side character, he could be a really good antagonist and this shows it. He contrasts Batman so well especially with the Light vs Dark, Moth vs Bat parallel. Also the reference to The Calculator was very nice. The spiral into mad(bat)ness was super cool as I could see it happening with a character like this.
this song applied to someone suffering from amnesia fits so well
Dude this version of killer Moth is canonical in my head, it's so good! A fear of darkness and obsession with light because of it is so genius that I am shaken over it not being from any actual comics (to my knowledge). Tremendous work!!!
Also the shot of him vibing with the lights while his meds sit in the foreground captures such a specific energy that really resonated with me, spectacular!
I'm used to finding bops from animatics, but never before have I found a whole album of bangers from one
And the animatic fits the music so well that if I didn't know any better I'd think it was the other way around
The ending is where this became a masterpiece, the lightbulb in the bat swarm was where it became stunning.
Okay just found this after your riddler one and I love it this is so good!
Edit: Okay I've just had this on repeat for like a day, gotta say this Killer Moth is now my favourite rogue, throw Hugo Strange at anyone and the results ain't gonna be good.
Think strange got especially pissed that he was dressed as batman specifically. Probably messed up his creepy research into Batman’s identity for a bit pfft!
I want to hand Killer Moth a light bulb in the shape of a heart so badly and just give him a hug oh my goshss
Do I need to get into DC now??? I guess so. No other choice. Gotta get to know Mr. Trauma Moth. Ahhhh such a neat concept executed impeccably. Lovely use of light and dark to convey the story. 10/10 would watch again.
I dont... want to set your expectations too high. This is basicly OC based on the original Killer Moth. Only truely good story with this guy I can recomend, is Batgirl Year One, where he is someone completely else (even if "Miserable Moth" still applies). I have a deep passion for revamping underused characters, thats all.
@@adamf.charles5857 that makes it even cooler! You're breathing new life into a buggy little fellow with lots of potential!

Absolutely OBSESSED with this take on Moth!!!! I LOVE THE WORK YOU DO IN YOUR VERSION OF GOTHAM
I like the o---o face he pulls when he is suddenly suprised by his own fear
The way he moves after putting on the mask 3:45 has to be my favorite part of this animatic
Will say this shows how batman even though he may be doing a good thing can probably also make the psyche of a deranged person worse
I would bet my lungs that the reason the dude's lights are faulty is entirely by the machinations of Strange. I guarantee there is a camera in every room and a switch on his desk that controls the breaker.
This is honestly amazing. I thought your other videos were well made, but this one takes it to a whole nother level. The lighting, the linework, the character desings, the expressions! All of its a delight to watch.
I think the best part of the video though is your interpretation of this character. I'll be honest, I never really saw much potential in Killer Moth, but you've really changed my mind. The light dark and predator prey symbolism has so much potential, and you explored that really well here. Seriously dude, if you ever made a comic or something I could see it being something really special. These videos already are some of the best Batman fancontent I've seen. Really, whatever you do, I'm here for it. Keep it up dude :)
Too bad I am not that great of a writer. I have plenty comic ideas (this animation is actually resolution of one of the plotlines, as I explained in the intro), but for each I need a well-put-together script xd

@@charlesweber5052 Not all, but most of them. Mental illness is usually a struggle, not just a way to make someone quirky or fuckedup and evUL, and I want to provide that
As a person who personally loves Killer Moth and the concept of him being a alternative version of Batman.
I love how you give him a tragic life and reason for why he’s become a villain. Instead of just being it to make money or whatever. He’s a man broken by his past like Batman. But his mental issues have become so severe that now the idea of the Batman have become infused with his fears of the awful thing that can hide in the dark.
But he’s not a complete sob story we still get to see that fun side that many love the character for. He can still be funny but the extra layer of misery makes him three dimensional.
I can also imagine his obsession with lights may be used for his villainous action, like Bringing the Bat into the light, in a fight he surrounds himself with light so that Batman will have nowhere to hide
If this were the origin of Killer Moth it would be much more interesting and many would like to know more about it. Unfortunately we have a character joke that they only use to laugh at the poor thing
I kean joke character have their place and Batman Rogues Gallery would use at least one. But some joke characters still can be deepened
I always forget killer moth exists so it’s very nice to see this extremely unique take on his character.
Don't know if it was intended, since the most obvious parallels to the song are his fear of the dark, and tendency to stay in the light, but the song has themes of questioning one's identity, and Drury fighting between his past trauma and his supposed new life as Mr. Walker is really good. While rewatching, I picked up on how his vision of batman in the mirror is actually himself in the costume, which I just thought was an amazing little touch.
Holy shit
You should be aloud by DC to make your own batman story
This unique take on killer moth and your amazing riddler anamiac were stellar
EDIT: Oh my god there's more
Oooh! I'd love to see killer croc with 'Am I a monster' from the frozen play.
I see this as a good take on a villain, but also a bad take on a villain. It's good because it doesn't show them as just simply someone who was wronged a whole bunch and is just a pure tragedy, he did do something genuinely wrong, and he is genuinely facing trauma that is making it impossible to function normally.
However this is also a bad take as you could also argue being evil is just his nature because he committed a bunch of crimes, got literally lobotomized, and is relapsing without relying heavily on medication. Though the Lobotomy is probably half the problem, they rarely work, and usually just cause more damage then they fix.
I definitely feel like him being a guy who is so traumatized of the dark he can't sleep properly, causing his mind to break down, is a better take then him just being a joke villain. Definitely fits better then trying to argue that the Joker should be sympathized with.
So he had trauma, but that was compressed into a fear of the dark which drove him insane AGAIN. Real good job Gotham! 👏👏👏👏👏
This is absolutely incredible! Not only is your art amazing and expressive, but the revamped story makes a joke character actually badass! I also have a weakness to unused/overlooked batman villains so this is a dream XD
i dont watch DC, but when you put WILL WOOD AND THE TAPEWORMS IN IT. IM SOLD.
I'll be real I don't know much of anything about Killer Moth other than he's usually a joke villain but fuck the idea of him developing an intense phobia of the dark after encountering Batman and thus developing the moth persona after seeking out as much light as possible is _sick_

Okay but I love this interpretation of this song. I very well may make something similar for a D&D character at some point.
! ! ! This is incredible! This must have been a ton of work, because it looks spectacular. I love his design, even if I'm not familiar with his story or anything. The pacing, the energy, the song choice (Will Wood is amazing), it's all stellar~
A friend linked this on my server (Hiiii Zander) and I am very impressed~
i _love_ the detail at _0:45__-__0:49_ where Daeej goes out of his way to avoid stepping on the cracks in the sidewalk. i dont know why but it just tickles me, like ofc the poor guy would try anything to keep from inviting worse luck upon himself
i also similarly appreciate how the lightbulb he's swinging on in the dream sequence (which. fuckin, _ow)_ doesnt hurt enough to let go. like, it still looks _hella_ painful (obvs) but the only reason he falls is bc it fucking _evaporates_ in front of him. like a candle thats burnt itself out. delightfully apropos, given that much like a candle, the last, fleeting remnants of his sanity are ultimately snuffed out before him
also complete tonal shift but the way his nose just _unfolds_ when he takes off his mask, like a butterfly unfurling its proboscis is really really cute omg
Well, at you mentioned 0:45 moment he is actually avoiding shadows casted on the sidewalk xd
Thank you for kind words!
