  • Yermín Mercedes took the league by storm in April of 2021, and was near the top in most leaderboards in key offensive categories, as well as a front runner for the rookie of the year award. But following a disaster run of form in May and June he was sent to the minor leagues, and in the season following, played only 31 games in the majors before once again being optioned. He spent the 2023 season playing in Mexico but with no contract in 2024, have we seen the last of Yermín Mercedes on an MLB diamond?

    This isn’t surprising tbh. Lots of good ball players come up light it up for a month or two then get figured out and can’t adjust to the league’s adjustments. That’s what separates good ball players from great.

    The 3-0 Home Run in a blowout ignoring the Take Sign was not helpful. LaRussa was unpopular and they used his chastising Yermin as an excuse to bang on Tony and his old school ways. The retirement was the same thing. It was a distraction to the MLB club even though he was in Charlotte.
    Jim Callis talked to the farm director of the White Sox and Yermin was actually picked In the minor league phase of the Rule 5 draft. .He didn't have to be protected on the 40 man, he only had to be on the Triple A roster and the Sox could not have taken him. They had a scout who said Yermin could swing it, so they took him to get a look.

    • @jnjtiger
      @jnjtiger 7 месяцев назад +4

      Excellent point, not covered in video. If you are a “career minor leaguer” and blatantly disregard instruction from your manager, who already happens to be in the Hall of Fame, you are not long for MLB. No matter how unpopular LaRussa was. And stop with the bat flips. Mickey Mantle was loved by teammates and opponents because he never showed up opponents. Hit mammoth home runs, put his head down and ran quickly around bases. Pitchers could easily have brushed him back because of leg issues, but they never did.

    Not uncommon. A lot of rookies (no matter what age) break in to the Show with a splash and appear to be the next big thing....up until big league pitchers figure them out and then the ride is over as quickly as it started.

      Yup you’re right. I’m a Jays fan, so I’m hoping Davis Schneider isn’t a part of that group. But from what I’ve seen, I’m confident he’ll be an above average hitter at the plate. 115 OPS+ next season and I’ll be happy.

    When yasiel puig came up someone asked me you rather have him or mike trout on my A’s I said neither I’ll take Bryce. Trout is the best player in the world but a left handed power hitter is a rare talent puig can’t even get a job in mlb

    That is a great story. The difference between the minors and MLB is that pitchers at the MLB will figure out hitters and execution the game plan. You have to be able to adjust as a hitter as pitchers adjust. He just wasn’t able to do so. It happens but none of this takes away from what he accomplished in that short amount of time in the show.

    Obviously, never in shape. Stunning that White Sox continually field players out of shape, Lance Lynn one of latest examples. Clearly, MLB teams developed a book on Mercedes and he could not adapt to their strategy. MLB awash in data - they call it analytics - and every team has same information. What previously might have taken months to discover about a player, now takes days. If you cannot adapt, you’re history.
