Tinnitus Alleviator 9 kHz Masking Noise May Help Ringing Ears

  • The Alleviator is 9 kHz (9000 Hz) focused noise to help mask tinnitus ringing for listeners with close to that frequency. It will not work for everybody which is why a series of noise masking sounds and frequencies has been created on the channel. Listener requested.
    Concept:
Start with High frequency emphasized noise (similar to Violet Noise • Ten Hours of Violet No... )
Add a narrow frequency boost at 9000 Hz using filters.
This newly introduced frequency boost may help the mind be distracted from the ringing close to this frequency in the mind.
Tinnitus has billions of variations and noise masking, can sometimes help when in quiet environments to take the mind away from the ringing to a degree.
There are three pillars to tinnitus relief: Health and Well Being, CBT- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Noise Masking. Using all three with the assistance of an Audiologist or ENT Doctor is a great plan.
    Thanks for listening, Dale
The creation process involved a DAW (digital audio workstation) called ProTools. A audio signal generator was used. The audio is recorded from the generator for 10 hours and then exported into a video editing program, Magix Vegas. A corresponding video is created with custom graphics I made in the video program. The visual is animated, then married to the audio and rendered out to the full length final video.

Glad YT promoted your video. I've never put any labels on the tinnitus I've had since playing too long and too loud directly in front of my amp stack the fall of 1974. If I could go back in time, I'd slap some sense into my 18 year old self. Reading comments below, I reckon what I have is called bi-lateral multi-tone tinnitus. I tried one of those sweeping tone test videos and hear several crossovers between 4kHz and 9kHz. Doctors (ENT) have always told me to live with it - listen to soft music (classical guitar or solo piano works best) or chew gum. Last fall I bought a bedside device that helps a little together with a room fan. It doesn't so much mask the sound as it does in giving me a point of concentration. That's how I've managed it for the most part - intense concentration - writing, playing guitar - etc. It does have a negative impact on me when recording and mixing songs - wondering whether what I hear in a mix is recorded or the tinnitus. This particular video has let me experience something I haven't in a long while ... listening to it with headphones let my brain relax where I am better able to tune into the sounds outside the headphones - like my wife talking to me. The pitch of her voice is well below this video's pitch - so I hear her clearly. Experiencing that, I now recognize a problem with my control approach ... you see, my intense concentration on reading and writing means I tune out the tinnitus AND my wife and all external sources of noise. So in a very real sense, my sweetheart has been a casualty in my self-treatment of tinnitus. Listening to this sound through headphones, I hear her perfectly and had a lovely conversation with her just now when she sat to talk. So now I find myself wondering IF there are any battery powered headphones that have an SD card slot for playing masking sounds non-stop? Perhaps with ANC? I hate ear buds and prefer ear cans. Thank you for this video - I look forward to checking out the others on your channel. Jack in Sequim

Yes there are a sd card slot headphones on Amazon. These are usually Bluetooth also. I recently bought a pair but have not tried them long enough to recommend. The Audio Technica 50s ( link in the description) come in a bluetooth version which are my around the house favorite because they are studio quality. They have a cable to use in the studio without bluetooth delay. Great notes about high frequency maskers not interfering with conversation. I have been in those situations questioning my mixes because of tinnitus. Monitoring in many environments, car, headphones, home stereo, sleeping on it, and then taking notes and adjusting the mix works good for me.

@@dalesnale I’m a self-recording songwriter Dale, with no AE training - so my mixes are hit and miss. My wife uses AT 20’s for her PC, I use Sennheiser HD280 Pros. Also have AT 40’s and Beyer DT 990’s where I record. I should probably swap those around and use the 990’s for the PC since they’re open back and better to hear her. What I’m puzzling over has to do with using the best soundscape that came with the Sound Oasis BST-80-20T sleep unit. Crickets chirping is the most soothing - but drives my wife crazy. If I could sleep on my back I’d wear BT phones - the AT 50’s would be sweet for that. I’m going to risk 20 bucks on one of those Perytong sweat band BT headphone rigs - people claim they’re comfy for side sleepers. Jack in Sequim

My tinnitus over powers the masking. Yet the 9khz frequency is what my tinnitus sounds like. Any suggestions because this spike is over a month and driving me insane

I though the idea was to notch out the frequency that matches your tinnitus, not boost it?

    • @dalesnale

Notching is another technique. It should be carefully matched to the pitch of the tinnitus, so I have not done any sounds utilizing that technique.

I attribute my tinnitus to mild deafness, caused by exposure to idiotic rock music, about ten loud concerts between ages 15-25 with Bruce Springsteen at Exhibition Place being the worst loudness (gave me that ringing that used to fade over the next two days). Also several Stones concerts, some bar bands (why???) and then the invention of the Walkman with headset…ahhh. Looking back I don’t really like that music enough to damage my hearing. How are the musicians themselves still operational?
Now, even my classical geniuses must compete with the rock memorial damage, and a 24/7 hiss quite loud at times in the 9000hz band. Was any of that stuff worth it? I know baby boomers love to talk about their rad music and good times. Meh. Everyone has good times at age 15-30, and that’s what boomers are remembering, being young strong and free of the burdens of applied adulthood.
In 2016 when David Bowie passed away, I walked around listening to his music on my earbuds…and my ears blew a gasket. The hissing started L ear most, but R one as well.
You won’t reminisce when left with the hiss. 😮

Some great points and caveats. Music does move us to emotional and nostalgic states, time and place. High volume does not improve the experience and it's supposed intensification of the experience is short lived. For some volume has an addictive quality.
