@@ProDigit80 I know this comment is 3 years old, but I would like to point something out. A car is not totaled based off of how much you pay on insurance, nor is it whether or not it's repairable. It sucks we won't see a car like this for a while to come still. It's a covered motorcycle. Gas mileage of a motorcycle, heat and cooling of a car. I love it because I live in Illinois. I was commuting 140 miles a day last year for college, so this would have been amazing. I just wish it had better visibility. I'm pretty sad there isn't a car like this even if I'm too broke to afford it. I hope affordable to buy, affordable to drive, and affordable to maintain should be the future. Rn you kind of have to get lucky and hope there's nothing you missed that will cause problems with a used car for a similar price. I really hope the future of cars goes closer to here.
Holy Cow Charles! I'm #19,401 (no kidding). I'm the last guy getting one right before you. I guess you waited till the very last minute to reserve one, just like me, counting the minutes till midnight on May 31st. I knew I'd kick myself if I didn't commit and get the bonus 'cause I was gonna reserve one eventually. Better the last minute than never.
Charles Belcher you do know in a lot of areas you'd need your motorcycle license because it is three wheels And even sport bikes get upwards of 100 mpg
I have followed the promised dreams of this car going into production since 2014 I think and if you pay the reservation price of $1000 you will get one of the first cars that roll off the line, ........but it is now 2018 and they still are not on the road. I have lost interest in the Elio. I’m so glad I did not pay for that reservation price to get one, because I can’t see it ever becoming a reality. I got tired of waiting and bought a Prius which has been in production and crash tested and made in America too.
+Alex V4 Damn no way, and itll probably go up after its release. but i still wouldn't mind getting for a cheap commuter car for work or a beer run. as long a they don't go up much more. And if they were a little more pretty, that would be a plus
Don't be too fast to damn them all, Tesla did the same thing, and they kept their promises, though it was a close thing to going bankrupt. Starting a new car company is a difficult thing, just ask Elon Musk. :D
I don't get why American made has to be a factor, other countries do have great car companies. By the way the Elio may be American made, but it does have a German engine. So maybe you won't buy it after all as it isn't fully American.
180 hp would feel dangerous enough in this thing, might already be too much for whatever transmission/ drivetrain they got in there. The comment on a 1000hp turbo 4 is either troll or ignorant of mechanics.
It's very reminiscent of the cockpits of the fighters from battlestar galactica. A year later and we still don't have anything but vaporware. Hope the plug paid well.
wow, just looked into this, it's basically the "Star Citizen" of automobiles. Constantly changing launch dates over 11 years, and their website asks you to 'pre-order' one, or if you already pre-ordered, they have an option to give them more cash. lol
"...so you get power to both front wheels which will help with driving in the snow." Their engineering team couldn't even afford to pay rent for the office space our company leased to them in Troy MI. Rumor has it that they have serious issues that need to be resolved.
because that's the best aerodynamic shape for fuel economy while still being upright enough for average drivers to comfortably get in (unlike supercars that some people have trouble getting in and out of).
It's a motorcycle with a roof and a trunk. If you want better gas mileage, you can get even more for a lower cost by just driving a regular motorcycle.
Totally! But I’d take this Elio over a mopar hemi engine any day. Those hemis are fun, but reliability is important to me, so a Chrysler/Dodge car is out of the question.
o Lemurs Except usually they have 6-8 50 gallon sizes bags filled to the top with mail :( I see what you're saying, but they use those dumb mail trucks because they need the space to put the bags of mail.
Its 2019 and I just saw this video, its sad that it never made it into production. I can't help but feel that making it a 4 wheel car would have given it much wider appeal. 3 wheels is just too far out of most people's comfort zone.
This car is perfect for singapore, compact, fuel efficient and cheap. They should bing it to Singapore because it's a small island. Love your vids Chris👍👍👍❤️
Awesome idea! If Elio can just deliver the goods, as advertised, and keep up with demand, they will be huge! I have had friends who have specifically told me that they would be all in for any manufacturer who offers a home fixable, simple, economic car, with DIY options. How about the ability to replace exterior body panels quickly and cheaply, so that you can play with the colors any time you want.
Slot1Gamer It has a seat belt. You can see the latch, with a red release button, on the right side of the seat. The belt is behind the left pillar. The driver didn't use it though, and that was lazy.
+Grumpy ol' Boot are you sure its not you? to be honest it sounds like if you get a piece if lead stuck in your rubber....you try to rub something out and end up drawing more lines...i mean, you are a boot...
unless one of the big automakers comes in and either buys the company or heavily invests in it the chances of this thing being a reality are slim to none.
@@thisnthat8106 Generally, no one builds their own disruptor. Elio was counting on being uniquely different to siphon off buyers from someone. One of the bigs would only create onea kin to it if, for instance, they could cover a big gap on EPA model mix matrix or knew they could componentize it without much effort and gain from the volume production efficiencies and drive their other unit costs down.
Lyle Stavast even by Paul Elio's words, they weren't looking to disrupt, they were looking to be an "and". But it's not viable. He didn't invent the want for a cheap car that got great gas mileage. It just isn't possible, at least not without gambling another half a billion dollars. But I see your point too. Execs would see this as an internal disruptor and that's a bad play
+intensity digital - Keep in mind, it does have airbags on each side. Also, a built in roll cage is incorporated into the design. It's safer than ANY motorcycle out there...
+intensity digital I would imagine you would need to almost treat this kind of car like a motorcyle. By that I mean be on high alert at all times, always aware of your surroundings to avoid things like this. But I mean since this is so light I can't see it using much of any steel (I may be wrong, dont hate :d.) So if a z71 can rolling towards you I could see the outside getting demolished, but since it has a roll cage you would end up being fine. So yes you would be safe in this, is it as safe as other cars, maybe due to the role cage. Is it a good compromise between a car and motorcyle in terms of saftey yes.
Of course everyone would die. Being t-boned results in death in most crashes unless you have a $40-50k+ car where more of the cost starts to go to safety. Some Hondas and Toyotas fair pretty well in most low speed crashes but typically the more expensive the car is the more likely you're going to survive a crash. I don't see much of a future for this. You make yourself look like a jackass just like driving a smart car.
I’m watching this in early 2019 thinking this video was made today. And I see this came out 4 years ago! LOL. The real car of the future is the Hyundai Ioniq. I just bought a brand new 2019 model a couple days ago. The meter has been reading 62-74mpg in the first few days.
can it drives on carpool with 1 person in the vehicle? it's nice to have your passenger seat on the back. no more "shut up and don't touch my radio or AC." lol
Yuelin Fan Since we're federally classified as a motocycle, and we're an ILEV (inherently low emission vehicle), HOV lanes love Elios! One thing of note is that if the HOV lanes become more crowded with Elios than the rest of the lanes, lawmakers probably won't allow it to continue. One of the many reasons why you should be the first to get an Elio by joining the 43,000+ reservations on our site, www.startengine.com/startup/elio-motors.
Elio Motors I don't think it's gonna be a problem if HOV lanes become crowded, first of all these cars are small, I just don't see it being a problem, and remember, the more Elios on the road, less other space-wasters, it might get to the point where we won't need to use HOV, since they gonna take up less space in general.
@016 production forecast...here we are March 2020!!! I am so sick and tired of waiting! I wanted to be commuting with this for the last 2 - 3 years already.

It's very disturbing that someone like ChrisFix who seems to know a lot about cars was fooled by this SCAM!
Thank god 90s cars are available for so much cheaper, and better.
It's 2020 and it still hasn't entered production
😢
They say that production will start 76 weeks after someone invests ~$360 million. So never.
Thank you. I reserved and I am Red Hot All In! Only 19,401 folks ahead of me.
Are you serious or are you joking
+IOS Gamer No he isn't.
+Randomized im 20351!
Charles Belcher you do know in a lot of areas you'd need your motorcycle license because it is three wheels
And even sport bikes get upwards of 100 mpg
Tesla needs to buy the rights to this car and make it electric.
Ryan Norris it’s funny your watching this so long after it was put up
Make it eletric?what the heck is wrong with you
BEN the doggo ?
Give a 632ci v8 with a BLOWER!!!
MO POWA BABY!!!!
Ryan Norris Yeah, then they will jack up the price to 20,000 by then.
This is a great car for touring but it looks funky and I like it
yeah it's 2020 and I've never ever seen one of these before
I have followed the promised dreams of this car going into production since 2014 I think and if you pay the reservation price of $1000 you will get one of the first cars that roll off the line, ........but it is now 2018 and they still are not on the road. I have lost interest in the Elio. I’m so glad I did not pay for that reservation price to get one, because I can’t see it ever becoming a reality. I got tired of waiting and bought a Prius which has been in production and crash tested and made in America too.
i got tired of waiting and cut my nutsack off aswell do u attend the Sexual therapy events in ur prius like i do?
I've seen one in the wild
No hood latch? Ok I guess I'll just take parts from my neighbors car whenever I need
Ok, but the jeep wrangler doesnt have one either
Padlocks😂😂
Over 5 years and still my favorite channel
Buggati veyron engine engineers: lets make a 54hp 3 cyl engine!
My car Honda Insight Hybrid 44hp....3cylinder 1.0 L
Its 2019 and this car that looks like the offspring of a motorcycle and a smart car isnt out.
hmm.. American made, easy to work on, phenomenal gas mileage, under $7k. they have now got my attention. possibly a future buyer..
rennoc gnal actually the price is 7,200$. i checked and the price was recently raised and this video confirmed my suspicions. What corprate assholes.
It's not that, american made cars are built by american workers.
I've been waiting 5 years for that follow up video.... I think it's sad that this never became a thing :(
Stop saying ‘It ain’t here’ *insert year here.* they never went into production and never will.
Ironically, it will be made in a Hummer plant lmfao
The shittiest mpg hummer lol! Now they make a little 3-wheeler, that gets 84 mpg, haha!
Imagine putting a V-8 in there that will haul ass
+JOJO B true they both would haul ass
+Triatan Albrecht Im thinking liter bike motor baby.
+kleinbottled79 yea but It would have but that little motor will only put out so much power
180 hp would feel dangerous enough in this thing, might already be too much for whatever transmission/ drivetrain they got in there. The comment on a 1000hp turbo 4 is either troll or ignorant of mechanics.
+kleinbottled79 True, with 1000hp that little car would do nothing but spin the tires at every stop
It's very reminiscent of the cockpits of the fighters from battlestar galactica.
A year later and we still don't have anything but vaporware. Hope the plug paid well.
2020 and this is the first time I am hearing of this car.
wow, just looked into this, it's basically the "Star Citizen" of automobiles. Constantly changing launch dates over 11 years, and their website asks you to 'pre-order' one, or if you already pre-ordered, they have an option to give them more cash. lol
as a 6'7 guy, im not going on the back of that car
+TheBigupz you'd fit easier on the back instead of in the back lol
sigh
+TheBigupz I'm 192cm so i dont think i have a chance either, it's hard to get into normal car because of my spine surgery :(
Probably the same thing with the rear seats of most sports cars.
you could just straddle the top of it
"...so you get power to both front wheels which will help with driving in the snow."
I don't know what kind of snowfall you get down there but that car wouldn't make it 100 meters through the snow during a Canadian winter.
Also...RUclips algorithm...you're a bit late on this one bud. Just a slight bit.
3 MONTHS AGO AHHAHAHA XDD Just a bit dude just a bit
@@bxunt5180 hmm 9 months ago now
@@lommedegroote6262 10 mounts ago lol
The Ford Fiesta ST engine would be ideal for this vehicle with performance in mind. About 200hp. Would probably get to 60 in 2.5-3 seconds with that.
Thomas Craig .
Georgeqaws has waw rhnioik
6:31 do I see the drift stang
Haha, just a coincidence!
it's already 2017. where's the car ?
read other comments. Theyre saying about lack of funding and such.
If you go to their website, it's almost sold out... only 572 units left out of 65 000 reserve.
Their engineering team couldn't even afford to pay rent for the office space our company leased to them in Troy MI. Rumor has it that they have serious issues that need to be resolved.
Spocker spock
Shut up nerd
paper shredder yeah
from the side this looks like a prius...
Felix Iris i think your right
Felix Iris A sporty Prius!
Felix Iris it looks like a shoe the giant green bean stock guy would wear
Felix Iris and the front
because that's the best aerodynamic shape for fuel economy while still being upright enough for average drivers to comfortably get in (unlike supercars that some people have trouble getting in and out of).
I drive a big old mini van and 99% of the time I'm the only one in it. I need this car bad!
Daniel Pendzich My father does the same thing!
I have been watching ur vids idk how I missed this one haha at least u got to drive it! I am thinking it will never come to fruition
I’m still hopeful it will be built for mass production, and the price has gone up to almost $20,000.
😮
I wanna say that this is cool and how amazing it would be if everyone in the future had one ,but I love my 5.7 liter hemi
4:42 ahah that guy in the back
this would be great for the mail man to drive
o Lemurs Except usually they have 6-8 50 gallon sizes bags filled to the top with mail :( I see what you're saying, but they use those dumb mail trucks because they need the space to put the bags of mail.
o Lemurs Not at all, there's no room for mail.
+Jesse Crandle they can get a small trailer and pull it behind
+Jesse Crandle
Wait, you think mail cars are dumb? They look awesome!
But I suppose, this is coming from a guy who like the Smart Fortwo...
It's almost 2023. How's Elio production going? 😂
Its 2019 and I just saw this video, its sad that it never made it into production. I can't help but feel that making it a 4 wheel car would have given it much wider appeal. 3 wheels is just too far out of most people's comfort zone.
Or if it was sold as a kit, it would make more sense.
This car is perfect for singapore, compact, fuel efficient and cheap. They should bing it to Singapore because it's a small island. Love your vids Chris👍👍👍❤️
Much cooler than a Smart car.
And a lot more fun to drive!
I hope they can make it happen! It would be nice to see them succeed but only time will tell!
Scott M
no seatbelt :P
Slot1Gamer It has a seat belt. You can see the latch, with a red release button, on the right side of the seat. The belt is behind the left pillar. The driver didn't use it though, and that was lazy.
Negative point for Elio: the second guy driving never used his seat belt.
There is not a working seatbelt in the prototype which is why the car was driven locally.
Locally on city streets hmm... That is illegal.
It is a motorcycle, no seat belt is required.
+lukibob Read what Chris said, it is above.
So, his first priority is safety, but the prototype doesn't have a seat belt? lol Coffin on wheels.
I remember how in Night at the Roxbury Will Ferrell says " I was like Eliooooo"
Who else thought it was electric?
I thought it would be a hybrid, but no.
*****
Thanks much. :)
I'm not really all that Grumpy ... but, y'know .. them damn kids keep ruinin' mah lawn ! >:(
that would be bad, really bad.
+Grumpy ol' Boot are you sure its not you? to be honest it sounds like if you get a piece if lead stuck in your rubber....you try to rub something out and end up drawing more lines...i mean, you are a boot...
Honestly if it was electric the development would actually be a lot easier from my understanding.
in future news "Paul Elios indicted for defrauding thousands of investors..."
7300.00 base price. it's feb 2017. this has bee going on since 2013 ...
Yep, must be pretty hard to build a brand new car from scratch.
Especially since they are a new business most likely and they don't have much money to work with
rEkT
7450 Base price. It's Dec 2017 :)))
7450 now. I'm guessing it'll be $10000 before it's off the line.
cool orange colour, decent power to weight ratio, cockpit style seating and double wishbone suspension. It's pretty much a mclaren f1
unless one of the big automakers comes in and either buys the company or heavily invests in it the chances of this thing being a reality are slim to none.
If it was viable, a big automaker would just do it. They don't need Elio's permission to make a three wheeled vehicle.
It looks like you would die immediately if you were T-Boned
+intensity digital - Keep in mind, it does have airbags on each side. Also, a built in roll cage is incorporated into the design. It's safer than ANY motorcycle out there...
stan proctor true. But how does it compare to other cars?
+intensity digital Still safer than a motorcycle and lots of folks ride those things.
How much was it
A smart car version of the prowler
RUclips: This is apropriate for car guys in 2020
can it drives on carpool with 1 person in the vehicle? it's nice to have your passenger seat on the back. no more "shut up and don't touch my radio or AC." lol
VW makes a diesel that gets 70 mpg for sale in europe but you can't buy it in america government BS
sam cardone But you can get the old 80's rabbit diesels that get 50 mpg, so not all is lost
sam cardone i was seeing that exact samething a while back how european cars make alot of mpg but somehow are illegal in USA
sam cardone wonder if it's because the u.s. runs it's economy through fossil fuels
That is because America has stricter emissions laws. More gas mileage but worse emissions. It's a trade off
Ethan Siems well in Europe you have to pay a smog tax so you pay a little more tax on a slightly dirty vehicle but save money on fuel.
@016 production forecast...here we are March 2020!!! I am so sick and tired of waiting! I wanted to be commuting with this for the last 2 - 3 years already.
How do you change the rear wheel?
***** No shit Sherlock, but it's enclosed, has a wheel assembly, suspension, etc, my point was how to get at the lugs and what not. (un)smartass
***** Obviously, which was my question in the first place...
***** Cheap for a vehicle, expensive for a tire
EvilJ069 ´you dont
EvilJ069 I know im waaaay late, but I think the 2 black panels on the sides slide off and you can access the wheel then.
The more I watch the more I want this car.😂 I love it.
It was fun to drive!
It looks like a very skinny Tesla model 3
I just heard about this car today lol my co worker has been waiting for years and was raving about it.
It's like birth control on wheels lol.
Diego Martinez you must be chasing the wrong type of women. lmao
Something like that with an electric motor and battery will probably be the future "commuter car."
yes plz, and I'd wire in solar cell skin to charge it while i'm working.
People say it ugly but I like it so much
oh man I totally forgot about this bombshell.
Zac Price same wtf
Still hasn't launched, went up in price and the automatic transmission isn't even standard
Braŭljo lol americans :D
@M-Game Dash Ew
@M-Game Dash Whatever is closest to instant teleportation is the way to go, can't wait for self driving cars.
3 cylinder? My phone has more horsepower than that!
Lol! you're probably right!
I bet your phone dosn't get 84mpg
A fiesta ecoboost gets 123bhp from 3 cylinders and 1litre, 900cc clio gets 90bhp with 3 cylinders and 60 odd mph
I love the EcoBoost engine, but I want to turbo the factory Elio motor for just a few hundred dollars.
so does my lawn mower. my lawn mower costs more and is faster too
That is a sick vehicle I would buy it! Nice review
Thanks!
ChrisFix I think I can drive 6 hours on 1 tank.
Wow I loved this car and would have bought one if they ever made it. It would be an awesome second car, solves many of the issues for commuter cars. I hope someone buys out the patents and it actually gets made.
This didn't age well. "Set for production in 2016". LOL.
