The main facade of the Farley Building (over 8th Avenue) features a Corinthian colonnade-the largest of its style in the world.
The facade bears a great inscription "Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds", which has become known as the United States Postal Service creed.
Before conversion to Moynihan Train Hall, the building housed NYC's main USPS branch, and the post office here was always open to customers - 24/7/365.
At this branch they would stamp the mail as accepted by USPS with the date and time, even if you brought it in the middle of the night. Because of that practice, on Tax Day, there was inevitable crowding of people and cars on 8th Avenue all night long, as people who prefer to file their taxes at the last minute would rush to this location to mail their returns before midnight. To accommodate the procrastinators, postal employees would stand in front of the building with collection boxes, and promise to everyone to stamp the returns with the tax day timestamp (even if panicked taxpayers handed their envelopes after midnight). There would always be TV crews filming this circus and taking interviews.
