Brand X - Nuclear Burn (1976)

  • AMG: Brand X were a British jazz-rock fusion outfit formed by Genesis drummer Phil Collins and Atomic Rooster guitarist John Goodsall as a side project from their regular groups. Their initial lineup also included keyboardist Robin Lumley and bassist Percy Jones (the Liverpool Scene, the Scaffold). Brand X's debut album, Unorthodox Behaviour, was released in 1976; a live album, Livestock, and the studio effort Moroccan Roll followed in 1977. Collins left the group to concentrate on Genesis, and for 1978's Masques, he was replaced by Al Di Meola drummer Chuck Burgi, as well as additional keyboardist Peter Robinson, who had played with Stanley Clarke. Three further albums -- 1979's Product, 1980's Do They Hurt?, and 1982's Is There Anything About? -- followed before the group disbanded. In the mid-'90s, Lumley, Goodsall, and Jones reunited, issuing several live collections in the years to follow.

Not going to lie.... Before hearing this I thought Phil Collins was an overrated drummer. I was then directed to this and I have no words on how good he is in this.

+crazytrain58 A friend of mine one day asked me, in all sincerity, if Phil was a good drummer. I gave him one look like "dude..."
I played some Genesis tracks, including "In that Quiet Earth" I believe, and this track. Completely changed his mind.

explosive0effects well he's an incredible music writer and innovator. he spawned the drum sound of the 80s, created the most recognized drum fill of all time, he recorded all instrumentens by himself on both sides, so you can't say he's shit at guitar or bass, and he has a very powerful and technically brilliant voice. i mean, just look at him performing supper's ready live. 23 minutes of never missing a note, and that's with him extending shit too. complete and utter nonsense you're spewing.

Phil Collins has no need to doubt his ability and influence of many generations of musicians and fans alike. Just know its OK to be just Phil, the rest is history and speaks volumes for itself, Peace to that anxiety of being worthy, its been unjustified anxiety of someone who keeps giving to others more than themselves!

Phil Collins is a precise, correct, and accurate drummer and has a sense of the rhythm fantastic.
I do not understand why many American and English magazines do not consider him, as if it were a "mediocre drummer". Craziness!
I have yet to hear (in recent times, 1970, 1980, 2000 etc, etc) of this level drummers. However the magazine "Rolling Stones" P.Collins considers a "mediocre". Maybe he did not pay the bribe ...

A lot of people give props to Phil because of this track, but you have to take into account the rest of the guys, the constant awesome bass lines by Percy, the awesome guitar riff by Goodsall and the captivating heavily-delayed keyboard solo by Lumley. Everyone in this album is insanely skilled! The rest of this album keeps this same level of awesomeness. There are bands and musicians who are extremely skilled, yet they can come up with music this good.

Try also albums made in the '70s by members of those two groups: Stanley Clarke, John McLaughlin, Billy Cobham. Al Dimeola, Jean-Luc Ponty. Bill bruford has done interesting things but solo (Not with Yes or King Crimson etc...). Uzeb. Jerry Goodman and Jan Hammer. There are many, but those are the obvious ones.

Much more jazz drumming.....which just is not rock. I wonder where Phil Collins might have gone were he to have driven/dove into jazz. I am convinced he would have been legendary. But jazz is not something you can 'dabble' in. You have to live it, feel it. Wynton Marsalis understood this when he left classical music. Rock certainly made a good living, unlike jazz. I would love to hear Phil on this subject and if he ever had any regrets.

I don't know a lot of jazz fusion bands that currently make music cos it started in the 70s, but ADAM NEELY, probably the most intesting youtuber out there, has a jazz fusion band called SUNGAZER. They use a lot of samples (i like samples but it depends on tastes) but listen to a couple of their crazy songs this is really impressive..
About today's music, I'd say Radiohead is a really great band, probably my favorite for experimenting with jazz/electronic/spooky-rock/krautrock in Kid A and Amnesiac
Other genres are also interesting like post-rock with long experimental and slowpaced rock, but again, you like it or not.. I would recommend Sigur Ros for the beauty (but this has nothing to do with brand X) and God speedyou Black Emperor for something darker..
Cos honestly, Brand X was never a huge pop band.. You have to compare the underground music of the time with the underground music of today.. I don't really like 70s pop and soft-rock and I certainly don't like modern pop

The Brand X were second only to the Weather Report, probably on a par with the Retur To Forever in the history of creative music of all time (Jazz-Rock). I point out to Noob and lamer musicians that period of jazz-rock is considered the most important musical moment in the history of modern music of all time! The rest of the music is just garbage business that anyone could produce.....

Check your dates - Firth of Fifth was cut in 1973, and this song in 1976.
I think it's much safer to say that the drummer has a unique style, developed through his own intense musicianship, and that there are similarities of approach throughout his range. I wouldn't say that the drumming here was in any way similar to that he did in Genesis, though.

I think you have that backwards - Brand X was formed in the mid-70's, after Genesis had been together for several years. Their most metrically complex work is from before Brand X was formed. After Brand X was formed, Genesis started to go in a more rhythmically simple direction.

This is great stuff. Also, One Hot Night In Paris is pretty sick. Check it. PS, Phil is in fact of the best drummers hands down. This is subjective but just look at his resume...it's insane.

    What a talent!
A good drum lesson for those who love musical instrument!
Away from the circus jugglers multiple pedals like "thomas lang and co)" Phil collins sends us his talent as a musician, ingenuity and finesse.
    Thank you Phil!

I got hit with a 47minute ad before this video. WTF is youtube doing? That's not an advertisement, it's an informercial! Who is going to wait 47 minutes to watch a video on youtube? RUclips needs to stop this crap! I kept refreshing the page until I got a shorter 30 second ad to hear this song.

You hold an awfully long grudge don't you... I don't disagree with a thing you said... but man he could play those drums, there are moments on the Lamb that give me goosebumps just like this does. Prog rock died, and the virtuosos who created it had to make a buck (they never got rich like the pop charlatans they were up against). It is what it is...

im not washing his hands of anything he did wrong. but he wrote songs that millions of people enjoyed and brought happiness to their lives. thats the point of music. i would say he hit the nail on the head more than another musician who plays something that 1% of the population cares for.
