Meet First Mother & Daughters Airline Pilots at Delta: piloting is a family business

- For a mother and her 2 daughters at Delta, piloting is a family business: On a warm Los Angeles afternoon, Kelly Jacobson is inspecting nearly every external inch of her 200,000-pound aircraft through the thick aviator sunglasses she fuses with her Delta Air Lines uniform. She'll be flying the Boeing 757 alongside a pilot she has a lot of hours with outside the cockpit. Several families inside the terminal are collecting their belongings in preparation to board the more-than-three-hour flight to Atlanta. Some of the children are sporting fresh plastic wings pinned to their shirt, a gift from the pilots. Wendy Rexon and Kelly Jacobson are mother and daughter; today is almost like every other day. They have already begun a routine they've completed hundreds of times individually but only a couple times together: arrive at the airport an hour before scheduled departure, debrief with the gate agent, walk around the aircraft and a pre-flight checklist so ingrained in their memories it only takes about 30 seconds. Kate Rexon, also a Delta pilot, flies the Airbus A320 for the airline, so aviation is the "family business." "We would run around in their captain hats and have fun as little kids and go on their trips with them," Kelly, Wendy's oldest daughter, told ABC News. "It was definitely part of the family business, and I started flying when I was 16, and I had the pleasure of being Kate's instructor and she was my first student." "Kelly was my instructor. She was my instructor and I didn't treat her like a sister because at that point, you know, she wasn't," Kate responded. "She was my teacher and that I think it made us both grow." Kate, the younger daughter, said she "dabbled" in other career aspirations, but she too ultimately fell in love with aviation.
A Rexon vacation wasn't like most. At an age when many parents wouldn't dream of letting teenagers drive during a long road trip, Kate and Kelly wore the proverbial captain's hat at an altitude of several thousand feet.
"When Kate and I were building time in little airplanes we go on vacations and mom and dad are in the back seat," Kelly described, with her mother and former flight instructor there next to her.
"Mom would sit actually in the back of the airplane. It was a little four-seater and she'd say, 'no, no.'"
Wendy describes the opportunity for her daughters as a safer alternative to other temptations: "Other parents would say, 'How can you let your children fly airplanes?'"
The mother continued, "Boy, I'd much rather give them the keys to the airplane than go with their friends out late at night to parties. You know, driving in the cars."
Reaching for the sky: But not many young women grow up in a family of pilots -- Wendy's husband is a pilot at American Airlines, and she got started at 16. It's no secret there's a shortage of female pilots at U.S. carriers. Only 7% of pilots are women, according to 2017 data from the Federal Aviation Administration. Wendy credits programs at airlines around the country, like Delta's "Women Inspiring our Next Generation," which promote to young women careers in aviation. The issue, she said, boils down to a lack of awareness. "They just don't think about it as an option," Kate said. But the family hopes women like themselves can inspire the next generation. "We're honored to be advocates for young women to join the field, and and just the industry in general," said Kelly, alongside her mother and sister. Ready for anything: While all three women describe their experience flying together as a "dream come true," there have been challenges -- as there are with any profession. Wendy and Kelly first flew together professionally in February on a flight out of New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport, and the trip didn't go exactly as planned -- there was "an extra twist." The flight was taking off for Los Angeles when smoke and fumes materialized in the cockpit, not an exceedingly rare occurrence, but an event that requires the plane to divert before conditions worsen. Wendy and Kelly decided they were going to return to JFK. "Delta 1975, we're going to stop on the runway, we need them to come check us out, there's no smoke in the cabin, but there's smoke in the cockpit, we're gonna open the windows," Kelly is heard telling the JFK control tower on air traffic control audio obtained by ABC News via LiveATC.net. The flight landed safely, and the airline got the passengers to Los Angeles, but it was Wendy's first time seeing her daughter pilot an emergency landing. "She was fantastic," Wendy said. "It was it was a difficult situation that was made easier because of that because of the training and because of her competence." Wendy's pride in her daughters and their pride in each other is evident. "Kelly is one of the hardest working people that I know and she's a leader," Kate said.

Does that mean most of their trips are considered a family trip?😂

Technically yea
Yep true

They are pilots, airline industry does roster, they cannot fly all flights together. And sometimes you hardly work with the same colleagues for longer than few month.
when the male says "girl you cant`park a car" and the girl answers "and you can`t park a dash 300 Boeing 757 like I can" thats awsome !!! many happy take offs and landings !!! girl power !
:-)
what’s a dash 300 Boeing 757 lmao
Taboo A Boeing 757-300 like the one in the video ! The longer version of the -200
Love it
I really hate when guys think women can't drive or park. Boy, I drive a six speed manual!
We need more girls who want to be pilots instead of princesses
👏👏
Yess 👍👍. I also want to be more
I'd love it, but I think I'm too old 😭
@@filmfelineadmin look what i found on the internet 👇
(….) An individual must be 16 years old to solo an aircraft, 17 years old to obtain a Private Pilot Certificate, 18 years old to obtain a Commercial Pilot Certificate and 23 years old to obtain an Airline Transport Certificate. FAR Part 121 (major airline regulations) require all pilots to retire at the age of 65.Commercial Pilot 2020 Eligibility
(...) A candidate should have scored a minimum aggregate of 50% marks to become eligible for CPL. The minimum age limit for CPL is 17 years, and the maximum age limit is 60 to 65 years. A candidate is required to pass the class 2 medical test to become eligible for CPL.
(...) There is no age limit for pilots to work commercially. At 40 years of age, you can start a career in airlines as a pilot
(...) How can a person of age 40 become pilot? Becoming a Commercial Pilot at 40 is not an issue. Getting a commercial license in most ICAO states needs you to have finished 12 years of school with Physics and Math
Is 50 too old to become a pilot?
If you want to become an airline pilot I would make sure that your are no older than 55 - 58 maybe even 60 to have the 1500 hours to start with a regional. This will, in the current state of aviation world, give you a solid 5 years of flying for a regional since the retirement age is 65..
Good luck 💚💚💚💪👏
Let girls be whatever they want to be, pilot or princess. It doesn't matter because it's their life

Proud mom with pretty daughters
I was a flight crew instructor at Delta Airlines. I flew with ALL the females assigned to the plane I taught, at one time or another. I have to say they ALL did a better job in the cockpit than many of the male pilots. No BS. I think the reason for that was/is because everyone is looking at them and watching them, how they fly, etc. They put forth the extra effort to be good, to know their aircraft better than the average pilot. This video mentioned the in-flight emergency (smoke in the cockpit) they handled and got their aircraft (a B-757) back on the ground safely. The outcome was never in doubt. Well done Captain and bravo!!
That's load of rubbish.Pussy whiped

My sister in law just retired from Delta. She was a flight attendant for over 40 years! Thank you for making Delta the safest airline in my book!,
Must be an awesome feeling as a Mother or Father, having their kids flying with them in the very same cockpit for the same airline.
Better than having a jealous sibling working for a rival company.

Its hard to take instructions from a sibling, at any age. TRUE AF.
Imagine your mom scolding you everywhere, even on air. But then again, imagine your mom's hug every time you are flying assuring you everyday.
I doubt that there's any scolding in that cockpit; it would be bad CRM (Crew Resource Management).
While in the end the captain has responsibility for all that happens on the aircraft, and the captain usually (but not always) has more experience on that particular type of aircraft, both pilots are expected to be highly competent at flying the aircraft, dealing with emergencies, and so on; each _must_ be capable of commanding and operating the aircraft alone in the case of incapacitation of the other. The first officer is expected to check what the captain is doing and help correct any errors (as well as vice versa), and both pilots will spend approximately equal amounts of time in the pilot flying (PF) and pilot monitoring (PM) roles.
The daughter no doubt feels most reassured by the fact that she's had (and continues to refresh with) extensive training in handling pretty much any conceivable problem, and the other pilot in the cockpit has the same.
The mother/daughter thing is certainly a nice story, but in the end neither pilot would be where she is had she not put in the time and effort, done the training, passed all the tests and check-rides, and so on. They will be professional pilots first, and mother/daughter second.
Holly cow! Those girls are beautiful.
Amazing.. More girl power and more family bonds way. Salute you and your whole fam. Ma’am.

I think a mother and daughter flight crew is win win combination for too many reasons to mention. I personally would feel safe on such a flight and I applaud Delta’s wisdom for letting them fly together. That said, a father and son on the flight deck is also a great combination.
Pretty awesome that crew scheduling at Delta accommodates this family, arranging so they fly together. That would be amazing for husband/wife pilots as well.
Not sure crm would work well….wife is always right 😅
parents and children yes....but don't think i would want a couple on the flight deck of a plane i was on
🎉Girl power!!! 🎉So proud of these women👐 and may god bless them!!!🙏
I was a girl that grew up in an aviation family. Cousins, uncle's, etc. I was exposed to it from a very young age. I'm fact, my first flight was in a single prop plane and from the moment of take off I was absolutely hooked. My uncle was Director of Flight Operations at Walla Walla College and his son (my cousin, obviously) were instructors there. We as a family decided to buy a Citabria (it's an aircraft designed for airel tricks. Citabria spelled backwards is Airbatic). My uncle and cousin flew to Louisiana to pick it up right when 9-11-01 happened and they were grounded for a couple weeks and the only restaurant closest was Hooters. (We still tease them about having to eat there for 2 weeks. Lol) We had so much fun with that plane. I was still too young to start ground school so my uncle would take me up to do some "Unusual Attitudes" (Airbatic tricks) and I couldn't get enough. I loved barrel rolls and Cuban 8s and gravity drops (I always had a penny to let loose as we dropped to watch it float) and it just made me more enthusiastic about flight. I loved and still love every moment of flight and always do my best to explain how safe it is to those who are uneasy about it. My cousin Kara Mulder is a nationally recognized flight attendant and pilot and writes for Huffington post and many other news sources. It runs in our blood and we can't get enough. The mother of one of my dad's friends has been part of the 99s (female pilot association) and she's 94 and I could talk to her for hours. Recently she recommended me to the 99s and it is such an honor to be welcomed into such a historic group.
I'm not a feminist or anything but I do advocate for more girls to learn about flight and pursue their private license and any other license they would like to work for there after. Little girls and little boys should be encouraged to follow their dreams and should be given the opportunity to try out anything they would like to do in the future and nurtured in whatever they choose that benefits society.
My uncle and cousin are now both airline captains and check airmen. My cousin was the youngest airline captain in the United States. (he was so young he had to wait years before he could rent a car on long stretches. Lol) I'm proud of everything my family has accomplished and proud to fly because I was given the opportunity. ❤️😎👍🛫
Love how mom says I'd rather have my girls flying a plane than partying!!!!!she raised 2 beAutiful and level headed daughters!!!!!!
Cheers Mum, You have provided the right mentorship on your daughters. Parents can emulate this kind of spirit depending on the capacities that they are.

I have no problem with female pilots. I have flown with some of them and they are all very professional as any man. I have flown on DC-10s, 737s and DC-9s with all female pilots and the flights were very enjoyable.
I am a male, retired 32 year veteran commuter bus driver and I have worked and ridden with many of my co-worker female drivers and they are all very professional too. As for the pilot, as long as the PERSON flying, male or female, is trained, qualified, certified, experienced and competent, I don’t care who flies the plane, just fly it safely and professionally please so I can relax and enjoy my flight. Thank you. 👍

You really hold very important responsibility, i.e. bringing the flight & passanger safety. While family relationship is a strong gift & opportunity. I admire very much of the involvment of more skilful female pilots not as a battle with the male ones, but as "an honour" for human safe flight pilot duty. So, it is a real honour to have anyone of you who love lively & safety flying joining any of the destination their best. Thank you very much for your whole hearted dedication.

I was on a flight with United with the first all female crew. Captain, First Officer and all the flight Attendants were women. When the Captain announced it on the PA a couple of guys got up and walked off the airplane. I almost died laughing. I had the great pride and joy of flying with my son as First Officer and as a parent I can tell you is the most beautiful thing on Earth. A plus for him was that he got to do all the takeoffs and landings while I smiled as the Cheshire Cat. Good for you ladies and may all your flights be safe.
On a side note I do not understand why some airlines insist in dressing their lady pilots as if they were men. The hat looks horrible with long hair and a more feminine yet professional outfit could be designed for them.
