- Michael Holding has made excellent use of the current advancements in Television broadcasting and highlighted a few things, but inconclusively. The end of this clip, still maintains the doubt on whether Shoaib Akhtar's bowling is within the laws of Cricket.

If Micheal Holding says Shoaib doesn't chuck..Then he doesn't chuck!..Also observe his delivery action, it's side on classical..He couldn't chuck from that position without dislocating his shoulder!..Chuckers never get side on, they are always front on when they throw, like returning a ball from the out field!

It's not the hyperextension in the action that worries me - it's the throw that he employs after the arm comes over.

you are right. at the final point of delivery sometimes you got the impression that Shoaib Akhtar was chucking. Not always but certainly on some occasions his arm was not straight. Seems as if that extra pace he was generating came from it. And he was reported.
@@brajeshsingh2391 hell no. No bowlers arm is ever straight when they are bowling. Brett Lee was also reported for chucking. Brett Lee had a slight bend in his arm, and so did many players. Shoaib didn't chuck anymore than Glenn Mcgrath did. I never that Shoaib was chucking at any point in his career.

Shoaib is one on the most exciting bowlers ever, a great bowler. Thank god they didn't ban him, shame he distroyed our batting attack many times, lol. As an Aussie I coped a lot of flack, people assuming all Aussies hated Shoaib, but I never did. I want the best V's the best, I love players like Shoaib, Tendulker, Muralie etc, they may tear us apart, but that's cricket, thats why this is the greatest game. Play the best players, some times you'll lose, "thats cricket".

This is why biomechanics experts, and not former bowlers, should do the biomechanical analysis. RP Singh's arm moves in line with the trajectory of the ball so 100% of the hyperextension will be in the opposite direction which is why it's not visible from directly in front. Shoaib, on the other hand, like Malinga, brings his arm from mid-off so the hyperextentions will be towards mid-off and, hence, visible from directly in front.
Holding was on the ICC committee that looked into issues like actions and privy to bio-mechanical analysis reports.

Hyperextension is not chucking. Even though the arm is not straight, it is not "throwing". A throw would be under 180°

My view is if the bowlers elbow leads the arm in the action of bowling the risk of throwing is high. Side elbow is safe.
I am from India and enjoyed every bit of Shoib's bowling. He never chucked. Had any english or Australian bowler being doing that sort of hyperextension, they would have said that it is common sense for the elbow, arm and shoulder not to be in straight line because that is how his body is. Chucking is when a bowler does that on purpose. Shoib never did that on purpose. He is clean and to hell with english and aussie commentators.
Well, i'm from australia..And you are right!..Shoaib does not throw! His action on delivery is classic side on..If Shoaib tried to chuck from that position, he would injure himself! All chucker in delivery stride, are front on, they have to be to bring the throw into play, like a fieldsman returning the ball..And in passing..It was the international umpires and match referee who reported Shoaib for a 'suspect action'..Not Australians!
From front view the arm should be straight. Its broken at the elbow and then straightens. Thats throwing.

It's not about what someone would have said about English bowlers, it's about whether Shoaib chucks or not. Wearing long sleeves even in searing heat gives you a clue.

You have to remember one thing. RP Singh is a front on like many fast bowler. that means his arm moves in a 2d plain and therefore nullifies the hyper-extension. Where as akhtar is a side on bowler like waqar with a similar action therefor his arm is moving in a 3d plain and can give an illusion of chucking. Another thing I can tell you from being a seamer myself is that if you try to chuck with that kind of action your upper body will wrap around lower body and your right hand will be hanging by your left ear and you will look like shaped balloon
They are both side on bowlers mate. A side on bowler is a bowler who's back foot is parallel to the popping crease. While, a front on bowler on the other hand has his back foot perpendicular to the popping crease.

The front shoulder is across the body and you looking at the batsmen over it. Anyway that was not the point I was making. All bowlers have a slight hyper extension due to their arm rotating that fast the drag will cause their arm to seem that it is bent backwards.
Abhay Singh you say you're a seamer abd yet you fail to know the basic. If you've watched rp singh bowl you'd know he's mainly away swing bowler for left handers and for aways swing the easiest action is side on. Getting the ball away from straight on is extremely difficult and we are talking about a bowler who almost always bowled away swingers to left hander which means he obviously has side on action. It's elementary.
Front cam shows RP Sing's arm as straight (even though side view shows it isn't) because his arm rotates on a vertical arc. The reason the front cam shows shoaibs arm as crooked is because Shoaib's arm starts behind his back and has a horizontal component to it's motion. He doesn't chuck any more than RP Singh, or McGrath or Lillee. If you stop old slow motion vids of Lillee and Thomson from speed test videos you can see a 15-30 degree angle at the elbow due to hyper-extension.

When a side on bowler like Shoaib has hyperextension it will look like a bend from the front view cuz the arm is coming from the side but I'm reality it is hyperextension just like how holding said which is completely legal now if you look at a front on bowler with hyperextension like lee you can't see the reverse bend in the elbow from front because the arm is not coming from the side

Hyperextension or not, I believe Shoaib was a chucker....I once watched a game Pakistan played vs New Zealand where Shoaib had injured his leg, and was barely able to stagger to the crease....he STILL bowled extremely quickly off only around 3 or 4 paces...I don't believe he could achieve that sort of pace off such a short run, AND with an injury without chucking it🤷

An awful lot of genuine quick's have this 'hyperextension. Even the great R.R. Lindwall had it! So did Brian Statham!..As has Brett Lee. But it's when the arm comes up crooked from front on the action is called into question, as Shoaib's does! However, this does not mean he threw it! I believe Shoaib's action is perfectly legal and the camera evidence seems to support this!
If you look at Lindwall and sometimes Larwood too they both looked like they chucked it. Mind you in modern times it has been easy for this to be picked up by coaches via videoing in the nets from a young age if there is willingness to do it.

Hyper extension would be mean at the final point of release the arm still straightens with a slight extension of the elbow backwards, shoaib in many occasions from 2004 onwards was chucking it with slingy action of his. His arm did not rotate full 360 degrees and at release point had a jerk.

good for shoab that he has hyper extension but doesnt mean its an excuse to chuck it, its so obviously not a normaly bowling action from this video it needs to be stopped or more people will do it. its spoiling cricket. there are a few ways to combat chucking, either allow it and make the wicket 25yrds long to increase reaction time for batsman or just ban it altogether and make bowlers change their action or they simply wont be allowed to bowl.

The rules provide for some % of bend in the elbow - which Murali was somehow is able to clear. So I figure Shoaib'a action - whilst not pure - is okay. Shoaib was such an exciting bowler to watch - we will be talking about him - in a complementary way - in years to come I think.
I don't agree with holding as he must understand hyper extension. Hyperextension happens towards back of the hand. Not inwards.

I don't think that there is any point in calling him a chucker, even though he does hyperextend there is literally no control over the fingers to take advantage of what a throw could offer. In fact it's more of a hinderance - try and extend your arm back as far as possible and see how much power you have in your hands...
Bcz Fast bowler can't get advantage of hyperextension like off break spinners get.

India, Australia, England, Kiwis and Windies and others..Domestic cricket dont allow illegal way of bowling such a bowlers.. This not only case with Akthar most of fast bowlers do this if they want to ball fast..one can observe change in action.. I dont know the laws of games..But fast bowling is difficult and balling beyond 146 kmph is very hard.. One needs to analyze fast bowling in detail..Its not fair on other bowlers who work hard to ball 145 kmph..
Brett lee also bowled with a bent arm, but because he’s white no one accused him of chucking
