I think I was an exception to the 'don't worry about protein in the first 4 months' suggestion. I had already been using no heat styling, no chemical colouring, no sulphates and washing once a week for years. I looked into curly hair care after my hair lost all its curls due to overmoisture. I only started getting them back after going pretty heavy - handed with the protein. I used the ecoslay matcha boost as a regular conditioner every time I washed, after seeing how much my hair loved it. That and the treluxe gel are favourites of mine too.
My hair has been soft from the start and wasn't heat damaged, etc. I'm about 10 months in and been looking at the Matcha Boost and think I'm convinced 😆
I also had a huge moisture overload last year! and i also used the ecoslay matcha boost basically as a laste resort after courtneys recommendation:) and i can truly say that it Saved my hair back then😅 think my hair has only just recovered from it now, it took almost a year for me.
I'm just embarking on my natural hair journey. I have fine hair with what I consider medium density. I would classify my curls as 2B - 2C. I have no idea about moisture vs protein needs for my hair. I did learn a ton from this video. Thanks for your labor of love in doing this video.
I love your personality! I am in my first week of curly girl method and wow what a change already. Doing my first ever protein mask as I watch this. Your advice is very helpful.
It would be fun for you to do some shorts/post something on Instagram that highlight the ingredients the way you did in this video but with just the one or two of the products you used on your wash days with an explanation of why you picked those products that day.
Hi Courtney! thank you so much, that was so educational! I heard about liquid proteins drops like rice proteins, silk proteins that you can add to any moisuraizing no "proteiny" product to costumize it at your need... I find that interesting...what do you think? love from italy!
I would love an answer to this as well! I'm having a hard time finding products with protein that don't have ingredients that my hair and/scalp doesn't like.
I think she does use those. Also Wavy Ali had some advice around those. Those seem to be a really good way of not buying separare costly products just to have products with proteins. However one need to be quite careful on dosage and not add directly to the bottle as it will spoil the product down the road.
Pretty sure my hair is an exception to the four month rule. 1 month into it and my curls fell and my hair felt gross and would never dry. I clarified and did a deep conditioner and the results were very gross and concerning. I watched your protein moisture balance video and had all the symptoms of the over moisturized hair.
Please do a moisture product video like this and drugstore one too! Also, have your tried Twist by Ouidad? I think they are heavy with protein, right? My daughter’s hair feels like straw after using them…I think I am returning them. Thanks!
Needed this as my hair has been in moisture overload since baby #4. I used to avoid protein in everything except my gel. 🤷♀️ Apparently I need to leave my drugstore comfort zone
How would you categorize aloe, as moisture or protein? I’ve been loving the Kinky Curly line and their Spiral Spritz is basically all aloe and my curls LOVE it. Not sure why but I’ll take it!
Have you ever used the Curl Keeper line? My hair loves their silk shampoo and conditioner. However, now I can better understand the ingredients list thanks to you! Caveat: I don't love the conditioner because its hard to work through, my hair loves it.
Have you heard of Jozi Curls? I live in Alaska so things take a minute to get up here sometimes, but I just noticed it at target the other day. Could you do a review? Love your channel!
Hey Courtney! I wonder what you think are the most effective proteins to use. Are some proteins useless/don't even enter the hair shaft ? Curious to know what you think !
Sadly, in this video there is nothing available in my country exept the Ecoslay matcha boost. But I use the Blueberry bliss leave-in by your recomendation and it's a total favorite for keeping balance and refresh my waves.
Im so glad you did this video. My current protein mask shea moisture blue label one is nearly out and i want to try something else. I fully intended to get curl junkie but its not available in new zealand. So im considering the ecoslay matcha green tea boost. Is it necessary to deep condition after using it? The reason i ask is i do a prepoo with curlsmith bond salve and i just want to be done after finishing my protein treatment (matcha green tea boost)
How have I not gotten around to trying matcha boost yet?!? Miribel naturals (for let my soigne protein leave in) works like a dream in my hair. May pull out my curlsmith featherweight protein cream for winter too
I have this but have yet to use it. Do you apply after shampooing like a conditioner ? I can’t use before shampooing as a deep treatment. My hair can’t handle that. Thx
@@leeanns79 I use my deep conditioner after shampoo. That's how I use this, but I honestly wouldn't buy it again. I rarely need hydration without protein. It would probably work as a regular conditioner too if you just don't leave it in as long.
@@SwavyCurlyCourtney They’re ultra cheap brands! They tend to be more ‘Family Dollar’ than ‘CVS’. They’re one of the only cheap options I’ve ever seen for glycerin-free gels with protein, and they’re basically entirely hold ingredients and proteins lol

#swavycurlycourtney One word often found in ingredientlists: Hydrogenated (something) - do you know anything about this? Isitcg list it as 'probably ok' 🤔
I believe the scientific answer is that hydrogen has been adding to the ingredients chemically. I'm not sure how this changes the application of an ingredient in hair care, ie hydrogenated castor oil.
PS. The highlight key: green = protein, yellow = moisturizing
Curls blueberry bliss leave in is my favorite leave in ever, with some protein, from target. Learned about it from one of your old videos.
I got it because of this but I used it everyday for a week and got really bad moisture overload

proteinaceous: consisting of or containing protein. I remember that word from college but I like proteenie better!
OOOOOOO I loooove that word!

My hair has no elasticity and MyMane Bio said to avoid protein until the elasticity is back. I will keep an eye for a protein free product video. 🎯🎀🎯

Jessicurl would be a great one to try! Curlsmith has some balancing products as well.
@@SwavyCurlyCourtney thank you ❤️
Do you have a favorite deep conditioner hair mask without protein ?
I still struggle getting the TreLuxe gel to work for me.
I have definitely found that less is more (and less leave in conditioner or cream underneath really helps)
Same! Over the past year have used it in multiple washes and humidities but still EH.
@@SwavyCurlyCourtney Thank you. I will give that a try.
Everybody loves treluxe and I couldn’t ever get it work. I actually have my best luck with the Harry’s sculpting gel from Target lol
Surprised not to see the SheaMoisture Honey & Yogurt treatment here. Is that because there isn't protein in the first five ingredients?
Probably. I don't find that has enough protein for me either. I use it for moisture.
More so moisturizing than a protein treatment
