Row Boat to Mini Bass Boat Conversion

- During the Fall of 2022 and early Winter of 2023, we converted my late father's 12 ft row boat into a mini bass boat. I spent a lot of time researching and then thinking through each step of the project; I thoroughly enjoyed working on the project with my youngest son Daniel and can not wait to use the boat for some killer bass fishing.
If you have any questions that I was not able to answer in the video, feel free to leave a comment and I will do my best to answer them for you.
God Bless!
I live in the woods, close to a good Bass lake my Dad and brother and kids fished in, my Dad passed at 90, I took him fishing his last time and we caught fish, I still think about Him every time I fish, I miss him so much , he's in Glory with Mom and my Son. I'll fish till I go see them.
Thanks for sharing brother. So glad you have those memories.
I too remember the last time I went fishing with Dad. The cancer was already effecting his legs, but he said he would sit in the canoe. All I wanted was for him to catch a nice one. Sure enough, he got the nicest catch of the evening. I wish I could take him on his remodeled boat. But I will enjoy every chance I get to take my sons.
You are a good man brother. I see and hear the emotion in your voice. You held back tears to tell this story. I enjoyed this. Well done. Your father sees this all.
I appreciate it good friend.
your father is resting in paradise, he is proud of you and your family. thanks for the video brother, SICK boat.
And thank you for your message. Glad you like the boat, it's been a blast to fish from it. Can't wait to fish with my dad again!
God bless you for your testimony and the nice work "resurrecting" a great little boat
@@bikerthom Thank you my friend. Just used it this morning on the Susquehanna River with my brother. Best part was being with my brother but second best was the fishing. Brother caught a huge cat (on top water!) and plenty of other smallies.
Enjoy every day!
Your dad is proud - no doubt. Excellent build. You obviously also believe "Whatever you do, do it for the glory of God". Thank you for sharing.
Thank you for your kind words. We all certainly fall short, but let us strive to show and share God's goodness to everyone we meet.
This video is absolutely fabulous. Thank you so much for sharing a story as well.
Awesome stuff
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you for your kind words.
Awesome job and a great story that will be kept close to that boys heart. Thank you for not being afraid to mention our Lord and Savior.
Thank you brother!
"For I am not ashamed of the Gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes." Romans 1:16
G'day from Western Australia
I very much enjoyed that build. You weren't just transforming a boat, you were also transforming a relationship of father and son. There are so many lessons your son will take through life from that time spent together, both physically and Spiritually. God takes the ordinary and turns it into the extraordinary and there is a powerful message to be shared in this journey of transformation.
God bless you
Pastor Dags
Thank you for your encouragement, Pastor. Your message reminded me to keep praying for my sons, and that is what I just did.
Dad would be proud
He would have been, yes. And he also may not have done the project...he wasn't a big risk taker. But I know he would have enjoyed the outcome!
May your Father RIP 🙏..Congrats on your awesome boat renovation, and I commend you on this inspirational video. I now know some additional options that can ease the renow I want to do to my 12 foot V hull boat. Thank you again, and God Bless you an your family.
I still think of him often but I he is glorified. Hard to fully understand when you think about it.
I hope your project turns out just how you want it to. Best to you!
@@joshuanaylor719 Thank you again Joshua. Once I fulfill the dream of renovating my 12ft V hull boat, and launch it in the local lake near my home I'll post a video on RUclips; just as you did. Hopefully my version will turn out to be as successful as yours. LOL! 👍☺️Stay strong an blessed Dude. 🙏
Amen. You gave me some good ideas as I’m about to restore a couple aluminum boats.
Glad the video could be helpful. Hope your projects go really well. Best to you!
Thats an awesome boat and story! I have a 12 ft Seaking im thinking of modifying, your video has given me some ideas and great inspiration! God bless!
Awesome. I hope you move ahead with the project.
Here's to a lot of enjoyment while doing the reno and great fishing stories after you use it.
Blessings to you!
Done well and with love.
I appreciate your kind remarks. It has been a blast to fish with my sons, brother, wife and friends (not all at the same time, of course...just a 2 man boat.) Hope you are able to enjoy the water too.
Awesome tribute to your dad. The boat looks great.
Thank you my friend. I still think about him nearly every time we head out on the water.
GREAT story and project.
So glad you enjoyed both! Best to you and be blessed my friend.
Great man. Good boat. Nice vid. Im restoring my grandaddies 1957 14ft starcraft semi-v row boat. He bought it new way back when...and my grandma signed it over to me a couple months back. Its all rotted out, needs new transom, seats, etc...but you can bet your pants that im gonna make my late papaw and grandma proud and do this build RIGHT, just like you have.
Very very nice. Best to you and your project - you won't regret spending extra time planning and producing. We have enjoyed every moment using the boat and sharing it with others as I am sure you will too. God Bless!
Sorry for your loss i to have my dads old boat and fish a lot and just have fun on it ,
Thank you for your kind words. I am confident that one day we will see our dads and better yet, be with our heavenly Father.
Enjoy a little bit of heaven on this side when you are fishing!
Amen praise God love the boat git a sundofin 12 in Ireland here and am loveing it thank u for the video

Thank you good friend. Let's keep praying for our families and anyone God puts in our lives. That is why we are here, to be an example Jesus to those around us so they too can find the hope and peace we have and know.
Wow.. you’re genuine and a great dad.
Thank you my friend. I know I could be a better dad but am grateful for grace from my family and especially from our Lord and Savior. Best to you.
Just did this with an old boat my sons bought for Father's day. Thanks
Wonderful! Hope it was a great project.
If you are like me, I'm not sure if it was more fun redoing the boat, or using the boat. Well, on second thought... it is definitely more fun using the boat!
What a great video! This is the second video I watch on boats mods that mention Christ I just love that!
So glad you watched the video and were blessed by the message.
Very clean,pops would be proud
Thank you my friend.
Wow very nice job. How fun to be able to do it with your son - that will stay with him for the rest of his life👍👍👍
Indeed. We are enjoying using it even more.
I’m in the process of doing the conversion to my dads boat also. Great work.
Great. Enjoy every moment of the project and enjoy fishing.
Thank you much for sharing this video. Were getting a simular boat this week. Helped us out alot. God bless
So happy to hear that the video provided you with some ideas. I hope your enjoy transforming your boat. Best to you brother!
Awesome job, a great way to make memories with your son. Love the message at the end the most. God bless brother.
Everytime I think about things that are changed and renewed and how good and fun they are, I am reminded once again that the ultimate transformation is when God seeks and saves us, the lost. Sometimes there are no words to describe this amazing truth. Be blessed my friend!
@@joshuanaylor719 Glory to HIM!!!
Awesome conversion and word!
Thank you brother!
Nice job great boat an story. Hopefully your son does the same when he’s your age with a family of his own.
That is what we hope for, to pass a legacy on to our children. Thank you for the encouragement to all of us.
The 90 pounds added doesn't include the seats, trolling motor, and battery, I assume?
The deck stringers are really overbuilt, IMO, 1 x 3 1/2 could have saved some weight.
I have a 1963 Montgomery Ward Sea King 12 footer. I believe it was made by StarCraft. Has all of the earmarks of the StarCraft SeaLite. A true "cartopper" without a drain plug.
Nice work, built to last.
Very nice job. I’d be careful with your rear 12v posts, they are mounted directly over you gas tank. They might ignite built up gas fumes if you ever decide to use them.
I completely agree. Since making the video several years ago, I immediately added thick rubber covers on those posts. I never have them exposed with the hopes of preventing any spark our arcing when I am using the gas motor. And when I hook up the second trolling motor, or charge the battery, the fuel tank is always removed.
No doubt that it's a bit overbuilt. Is my first redo and I wanted to make sure that when I was standing on the deck I didn't hear a snap crackle and pop and end up falling through.
The boat is meant to hold a total of 650 lb all in. After subtracting I'm able to carry 362 lb of people and gear.
Here's a complete breakdown of the 288 lb that we added to the boat
framing 37
back deck 19
front deck 30
misc plywood 16
(Added 95 lbs)
floatation boxes 18
transom 7
front trolling 36
seats 21
gas motor 57
battery 47
Excellent father/son project I am sure he will remember like you remember your fishing trips with your dad. You did fine work and a lot of nice touches. BTW, thanks for the Word. I would note a better translation of the verse you mentioned in Cor. is 'renewed' versus 'new'. In the case of the rowboat it is not a new boat but a completely renewed one. The reference to new covenant likewise is best rendered renewed by the death and resurrection of Messiah. I look forward to fishing alongside you for those who will inherit salvation, first to the Jew and then to the Gentile.
I very much appreciate your timely message regarding "new" vs "renewal."
I know it's not just coincidence that I'm reading a book about the "renewal of all things.". I believe I'm just beginning to understand the reality that no eye has seen or ear has heard what God has prepared for those who love him."
hi sick color! ill try to get exact same! did you have enough of 1 gallon? ours is 14 ft
Glad you liked the color. It took us a while to decide but it was worth it. Yes. 1 gallon was enough for the 12 feet, two coats inside and out. Plus I still have plenty for touch up for years to come. Good luck with your project.
Very nice. I would hire you to build mine.
Maybe one day, but I hate to take the experience away from you. Plus, I'll never be home again... gone fishing!
exacly what y want to do thx for the share
I hope it turns out really well for you. Enjoy the process.
thks i hope too hehe @@joshuanaylor719
How did you make the trolling motor mount? My bow is the same and I'm trying to figure out how I'm gonna do it.
I wanna figure out a way to attach to my boat like yours
@@nickmurphy7463 I fabbed two cleats (out of wood 1" x 1.5") that each had a slight curve to match the bow. I attached them to the inside of the boat using stainless bolts. I had to drill through the side of the boat, but a little aluminum JB Weld under the washers sealed it up fine. Just make sure the cleats are at the correct height so that the plywood on the top sits nice and flush. And make it big enough so that the trolling motor can comfortably mount. I believe I made a cardboard pattern to help with the above mentioned. (Mount looks like a triangle 14" Height x 26" Base.) Let me know if I can help further.

@@joshuanaylor719 thank you sir! Great video by the way!
Top notch build, looks great!
edit: the Bible verse is so true I feel as god is changing things in my life and taking old desires/temptations and fleshly desires away from me. I asked and said to the lord a couple months back...."if you are real lord please change my life and help me stop doing the things I do'' and slowly about a month later things are changing in amazing ways in several areas in my life. I bought a bible and reading it.
I am so happy for you, my friend. You have a beautiful testimony.... I hope you will share it with many people. God is so good! God is so real! God loves us, oh how he loves us!
Praise the LORD
He is such a good good God. Giving us opportunities to be creative and enjoy the work of our hands.
You put that back battery bolt in a very bad place. You are venting concentrated gas fumes and touching trolling motor terminals or dropping something metal onto it could cause a spark create an explosion. However, thanks for the tip about the treated wood interacting with the aluminum. I looked it up and if the copper in the wood comes in contact with the aluminum it will quickly corrode it. So thanks, reconsider that power connection at the tank & be safe!
Hello and thank you for your reply.
I was aware that the bolts in the back could have a conflict of interest with a gas can, so I did two things to remedy the situation. First I never hang the rear trolling motor and have the gas tank in the boat at the same time. I reserve that set up for electric motor only lakes and therefore have no need for the gas or the gas motor for that matter.
Secondly when I am using the gas tank and the gas motor I have the exposed bolts covered with rubber covers. In my estimation this would prevent any sparks or arcing that could happen if both terminals were touched at the same time by a piece of metal.
I welcome any additional thoughts from you so that my boat and any body else's boat can certainly be safe as you said. Thank you and best!
I recently bought a 65 sea king to do the same conversion but im worried about how stable the the boat would be with a casting deck
Honestly, I had the same concerns. I built a quick mock up before doing the entire project. I walked on the deck, sat, stood, switched spots with my son in the back, and everything was fine. So I went ahead with the project. The final product had about the same results. We could sit, stand, and move our feet a little (there really isn't much deck to walk on anyway. I am completely comfortable with the product, whether the boat is making a wake with 7.5 outboard, trolling or just sitting in the water. I do not have any concerns about tipping or the boat rocking around. We have used it about 10 times now. Hope things work out for you!
Thank you very much, sir
The sequel is converting a bass boat to a rowboat?
Ha! You made me chuckle. I wonder if anyone has ever done a reverse conversion? Let me know if you find one.
@@joshuanaylor719 You know. I like sponging out the belly, barefoot boating, and light weight, especially when lifting it onto the car roof.
they make 14 foit cabin crusr
Love to see a picture. Are you restoring one?
