- This week's “Remake of a Classic” is America's brilliant 1972 hit, “Ventura Highway”. There's a lot to love in this song - notably great guitar and vocal harmonies - but, for me, it's always been the lyrics that stood out...especially “Alligator lizards in the air”. Fact is, the lyric is actually a reference to the shapes of clouds in the sky Dewey Bunnell saw in 1963, while his family was driving the coast of California. During the drive they had a flat, and while his father changed the tire, he and his brother stood by the side of the road, watching the clouds...next to a road sign for "Ventura". There really is no Ventura Highway; Bunnell and his family were traveling on Highway 1, the Pacific Coast Highway...and it just happens to go up to the town of Ventura.

Musically, I think you are exactly right but it's an impressive One Man Band performance / production which demonstrates his range of instrumental talents and distinguished vocals. I assume I'm not alone with having had the experience of hearing a song and then seeing it performed and having the song taken to unexpected new heights. For me, Russ does just that. He's a very talented dude as demonstrated with his other remakes! That's where I'm coming from with my initial comment. That said, I'm partial to this song having grown up in So Cal in the 60's and traveled on the Ventura "Frwy". This song never fails to put me in a good mental state. Peace!

You did it again Russ. You add so much new life to the selections of your repertoire it gives the listener the joy of hearing the original when it was new because after all, they are indeed original arrangements. The great masters often paid tribute to one another by doing adaptations of the originals... as when Beethoven copied Mozart. I was never an America fan but then my girlfriend got tickets to a concert back in the 70s and I got to see them from about three rows back. They were awesome. Your adaptations of their songs are the best on the Web. Thank you so much for sharing your talents to the world!

Absolute perfection, Russ!! America has always been one of my favorite bands, and when my cousin went in the Air Force, when I was a young teenager, so almost 50 years ago, he gave me his collection of albums to hold for him, and their first album was one that I always cherished..and “Sister Golden Hair” was a karaoke classic of mine for decades… spot-on, note for note musically and vocally and amazing as always!! 🎼🎤🎸🎹🎸🥁🎸
