Bobby - Been following you for about 18 months. You're story - recovery from a health issue, making lemon aid out lemons, is what got my attention. The dogs were fun, the women are pretty but the content of your channel is what keeps my interest. The quality of the videos continue to improve. You've got a good balance of the sights and sounds of traveling by boat and your personal experiences during the trips. The hard work, dedication and skills you're developing show. Keep it going!
Your hard work is appreciated by us. I never realized how much work it was. It looks like your just having fun and taking a camera to show it. Working for yourself is never easy because you shoulder all of the issues or problems however you also reap all of the rewards. If I could suggest one thing that would be to take a day off once a week and relax and enjoy yourself. If you don’t your gonna burn out. Being disabled and not able to drive or go anywhere without someone taking me I’m living my life vicariously through you guys and a couple other vlogs. Take care, god speed and I wish you all the best.
The reason iI started to follow you was because I liked who you wereas a person. You have a rare gift in that people intrinsically like you Bobby. I knew from the beginning how much work this was and I wanted to help you, that's why I started to donate via Patreon. You were lucky to meet Laura she is the perfect foil for you. My advice about Patreon is do a small video on the steps to actually join & donate because most folks won't take the initiative to figure it out and they(Patreon) don't make it easy frankly. Keep up the good work know that we enjoy and appreciate your hard work.Be safe!
You came a long way, Bobby. I remember when you visited your parents house prior to going to Thailand, you did construction for a couple of days just to earn a couple of bucks. It seemed like yesterday and now look at you. Great product!!!
Guys, your efforts to provide us with even a small glimpse of the world is worth the rewards. Hopefully you can continue your dream and we will follow along in awe. Thanks!
Mav & Goose are why I started watching your channel. The content has been great from episode 1 up to right now. I still have a long way to go to catch up to your latest episodes but I will get there over the next few months. Thanks for posting.
Many people have no idea how long and the amount of work that is involved. And everyone thinks all those videos just happen with no planning what so ever. I am glad you informed them of what it is really like.
My wife does these little day in the life videos that range around 2mins in length and I'm her editor, producer, director. Ha ha. AT LEAST 2hrs to edit!
I am a patron and had many of the questions you answered about how you sustain yourselves doing this. Your videos have inspired me to learn sailing and I am working on enrolling in a sailing class soon. My wife and I are from the Dallas area (Lewisville) and have a lot on the lake so the idea of learning how to sail and enjoy the water more is very appealing to me. Thank you guys for doing your videos, we enjoy them very much!
These type of videos are always informative. This is one was more than that. I didnt realize how much work you were putting into maintaining your Channel. I hope you guys are making quality time for yourselves. Thanks Bobby and Laura.
You two are so inspirational I have followed Bobby from nearly the beginning after LA vagabond and then came perfect laura! Thank you so much much guys, be extremely proud of yourselves, you make people happy
Very informative. You guys do just the right combo of fun, tech, work, play and 'paying the bills'. Everything looks genuine, and not obviously staged. Keep up the good work, and enjoy!
Bobby, thanks for your hard work. I make my living as a pilot up in Alaska. I’m thinking about doing something “outside the box” of commercial flying and aviation all together. I came across your work while searching content about living on a boat. One pilot to another, you are a true inspiration man!
Hi Bobby and Laura, I love what you have done, so energetic and so much fun. Keep doing it love life as you do. I will keep track of you and hope you keep sailing. I have started watching flying doodles as well and that's great.
One of the best and most informative podcasts I’ve ever watched. You answered so many questions and I am smarter and more informed as a result. Thanks so much.
Great podcast. I’m not surprised by the amount of work you put in shooting, editing etc. I think what you deliver every week is first rate. The visuals are really good particularly the drone shots. You and Laura and others bring or have brought a lot of unique style, personality to your videos. Which makes me and I suspect many of your subscribers eagerly looking forward to the next installment.
For me it was the topic of sailing and the women - Megan and Laura who kept my attention but also the places you were visiting. I was living through you vicariously. You were doing what I would like to be doing, without making the vlogs. I also liked your videos because of the technical Monday shows, which I found to be very informative, just like the ones on White Spot Pirates and La Vagabonde. On this one with Laura on board, there is almost a story line to the entire Vlog much like the initial series by La Vagabonde, because it captured all of the key steps of your journey from Vancouver/Victoria B.C. to Thailand. It provided one with a real sense of the challenges and the rewards and the things that were a royal pain in the ass. This particular video is the first that I have seen on the topic of the VLOG business model, what's involved, what it costs, how you make money, how much money you can make and what the personal rewards are. To be honest, I am not sure it would be anywhere as a successful without having Laura on board. The fact that you two have hit it off and seem to have an evolving friendship/partnership that seems to be working well in a challenging environment, i.e. sailing around the world (sort of) and spending so much time making good Vlogs is pretty remarkable. I'm sure your videos also open a window on what it is like for female crew to go sailing, just as it is for Elayna on Sailing La Vagabonde, and for Niki, the solo sailor on White Spot Pirates. I wish I could support you as a patreon but unfortunately I can''t afford to do that. One other point I would make is that the people on board have to be relatively interesting individuals with likable personalities. There are some sailing Vlogs where the people are comparatively boring. That has a big impact on the success of the vlog. Continue to keep up the good work.
Thanks for being straight forward. I know you get to travel all over the world but it is not all fun but we all have to make a living , Thanks for your hard work and play .
Great video on the inner workings of vlogging. You make it look easy but obviously it is not. It helps you two found each other as Laura is a perfect foil to you Bobbie. A beautiful woman to spend all your time with and share your extraordinary journey to all these places you have and will continue to visit must be wonderful. Thank you for sharing all the sites you see as most of us will never be able to see them in person. The fact that Laura is like the energy bunny also makes her fun to watch Continued safe travels and we look forward to the next installment.
Thank you both for taking the time to cover the in's and out's. I am considering starting a vlog, and you have given me some insite into what I can expect. Thanks for sharing......
You have to be able to operate a video camera, many cannot. Your strength is keeping things relavent, not too long and different topics of interest. Hard work shows up in videos. Thanks.
One of my favorite Doodles vlogs to date! A topic I have always be curious about. Not to mention Laura was front & center the whole time!! Sooo thank you Bobby!
Excellent once again..although still don't think people realize how much work it actually is to get and put out great content, as Laura mentioned, and it's definitely not "grab a camera and go" like some think, helped a friend on some content for a channel a while back, and just behind the scenes was a ton of work!. It's also a market if you will that's flooded now, so don't know if I'd advise anyone to start at this time. Broke my heart about Laura's bean bag dying..as I came across ones that were colored and styled almost exactly like that puzzle she did a while back, and were roughly lounge or chair shaped, with rough arms and a back to them, and was going to grab a couple and try to send them where you were going, but when I went to buy them they only had kids sized ones left..and no matter that you are both trim, don't think they would have fit your backsides! But they would have fit the boat perfectly..so the thought was there!
Congratulations on 80,000 subscribers. Awesome! You'll pass Tula's Endless Summer in the next week or so and be the 5th largest sailing channel. Awesome!!
The most perceptive comment was about viewing thru cameras etc. versus simply being unencumbered so you can just take in the views. When you “have to get the shot” you often miss out on the big picture. And don’t you want to just sometimes hand off all the equipment to someone, anyone, and not worry about theft security and dive into the water or activities? It’s work and thank you Bobby and Laura for sharing.
Very informative video, not to mention the great backdrop of the villa! There's definitely a lot of competition for you, but I believe you'll be one of the survivors. You guys are truly artistic and provide quality and wonderful content; which will pay off in the end. 💰💰
Most of what you guys said was what I believe was the way it worked. I do love your videos. Your real-time people and I appreciate that, /too much of what goes on today is not real. You go guys and I will continue watching. Oh I am a sailor and lived in the USVI for 11 yrs so I know the Caribbean and loved it Have a good one RC Rum & Coke
Well organized and great presentation. Thanks for the information and glad to be living my dream through a fellow pilot. As far as your co-pilot, we all know it takes a good co-pilot to make things work; you just happen to one that is very beautiful and smart.
Hey there Bobby and Laura...you guys look really happy doing what you're doing and I'm happy for you and I appreciate what you're doing. I'm a retired disabled USN vet and I've been all over the world myself, and now, thanks to you guys I'm doing it again only this time vicariously through Sailing Doodles. I've been following Sailing Doodles for about a year now. I have a limited retirement income and soon, when I work out a new budget, (I just bought a new car in June) I plan to become a patron. Won't be able to afford much but I'll try. Thanks for this vid of explanation on how you do what you do. Very informative. Glen Brown
Thanks so much for this informative video. Prior to watching this video, I had no knowledge whatsoever about the business end of producing and profiting from RUclips videos. I encourage everyone to become a patron as a way of thanking you two for the outstanding videos you post!.
Your Video on what it takes to start your own Video, etc.. Vary educational on how much its cost for the equipment, such as camera and drones and operating cost, Plus your own sail boat, big bucks and it does take time to build your own clientele and also getting sponsors. Great Video, Thank You
Just subscribed tonight. Been following you for a while. This is the best video I've seen about the business end of vlogging for a living. And...you didn't really ask for anything in return. Thanks for your videos. You guys are really interesting to watch and listen to. Bobby, you're one of the most interesting presenters I've seen so far (I usually look at RV'ers and campers). You really got my attention and seem like the kind of guy I'd like to hang out with. Laura seems like a lot of fun as a companion. Good luck in all of your endeavors!
Wow cool thank so much! Great to hear. Be sure to check out my new channel “flying doodles”. All about aviation. In the spring we are going to take a 2 month RV road trip touring around to different airports interviewing aircraft owners.
Thank you for covering this topic! As a newb to hosting a youtube channel- I've always wondered what some of the bigger channels make, and how they do it. You work your tails off- that's for sure!! I also commend your channel content as well: As a guy who grew up sailing the Chesapeake Bay, I find your channel a perfect blend of sailing & boat life/maintenance/provisioning, travel and footage of beautiful places, and real life too thrown in. You guys are real! I think an episode centered around "driving the boat" (get-ready checklists, plotting your course, picking up the anchor, setting the sails, trimming, navigating, etc.) would be really interesting!!! Keep up doing what you're doing- I'm looking forward to watching more fantastic episodes. PS: has the Benneteau been your favorite boat so far? I've sailed on a few, and I have felt they were all great boats!
Hey guys, thank you very much for broadcasting. Very interested in finding out the ‘mechanics’ of vlogging and how it all works. I was never under any illusions that the lifestyle that you have chosen was anything but very hard work. I still hope to cross wales with you guys someday and until then I look forward to watching your content continue to grow wings! Cheers, from Mike
Great VLOG! I happened upon your channel by chance a couple months ago and now wait for every video. Your early VLOGs were good, but the addition of Laura has provided that little extra something tomato it great. Contrary to some others I think your balance between sailing and island tours is good. Please keep it up.
Been watching for a while, I agree with the comment of putting together a patreon how to segment. It is easy to see that Bobby is a hard worker and does a good job with the videos. Laura is a nurse, enough said, if you know what nurses do everyday then you know if not then you don't. I personally liked the boater interviews with the boat walk throughs, I know that it is probably hard to do, but it was interesting. Keep on keeping on. Thanks.
Thanks for your comments on the finances of RUclips Bobby. We have been working on her RUclips channel to get monetized and it’s definitely a learning experience. We have an RV travel channel called La Vie Flottante that is growing. Learning to edit and understanding who your target audience is has been critical for us.
You are doing an absolutely GREAT JOB. Don't change anything. If you ever plan to voyage the Atlantic Coast north of the Chesapeake, please, let me know as I would love to catch up to you and meet you at one of you way points. sdh T.A. "67 in CT
thanks for the update. I am so glad you are keeping going and able to self fund. I have been gathering some videos of things but 7 hours for a 10 or so minute video is a serious amount of time.. Keep it up and maybe get the new mavic drone. I am seeing some specs flying around and one has a 2x zoom and the other has a big image sensor. It is a sad day when the drone is gone. The biggest loss is the content that went down with the drone. I lost mine during a sailing regatta. I had some great footage going to the overnight but coming back I launched off the boat but tried setting home before takeoff. By the time the drone got up a few feet, home moved and it promptly flew backwards towards where home was and hit a few stays and then the railing. It went down so fast I wished it had an emergency deployment floatee so I could get the chip and take the chance on whether or not the drone could be resurrected. Loving your videos for over a year now.
you guys are great!...really liked the info and how it was presented. Answered alot Q's in short time. will now pledge thru Patreon!....really want to come sailing w- you both.
You Both Work and Play Great Together ,, Very informative , Definitely One of the Best Jobs Traveling By Sailboat Around The World is a Total Win ! keep Going Guys !
Firstly thank you for a very open and honest explanation about the "business" of vlogs, very interesting. I am really happy you two can fund your life living the dream because of it, you have a wonderful time and can fulfil your dreams as a result. I personally enjoy watching sailing vlogs rather than normal TV and the quality now is superb. Plus I learn so much more about locations, cultures and even what to add to my wish list and that's because of channels like this. You and SLV, SV Delos, SSL, Sailing Catalpa, Sailing Zatara etc are great and you make a lot of effort turning these vlogs out. Finally why 33 dislikes, you have been very forthright so I assume the only reason they don't like it is because they are not doing it and are jealous. Ignore them, the number of your subscribers should give you enough confidence for that. Happy times and live your dream :)
Hey thanks! Yeah there are just certain people that don’t like us or what we are doing. They don’t understand the amount of work and effort it takes to do it and think we are just “freeloading” off others. I’ve hade a dislike pop up within 10 seconds of posting a video.... so there is no way they watched it
AWhile I like the videos of sailing in beautiful waters, tropical islands and underwater videos; I like these informative videos as well. Thanks. Your voice is pleasant to listen to. Your outlines make your explanations flow well. I find watching heavily edited, choppy videos to be unpleasant. Smooth is good. I remember when you had fewer than 15,000 subscribers. Your production values have improved over time.
I've been watching your video since day one I could tell you get real stressed out but ever since Laura came along she take care of your stress now you're pretty cool laid-back guy like stress don't bother you no more
Always enjoy your videos, thanks.. for me I tend to gravate to personality and energy, lots of vids to watch yours are always great.. I have watched most all of them, up to and including when Laura joined you , didn't seem like you too knew each other very well at the get go, might be interesting to do a show on how and when you first met and what promped Laura to join you sailing..
Great info Bobby, Ive always loved how clear you are about what you do and how how feel. Yes started watching for the sailing but keep following because I'm interested in the lifestyle. I always look forward to these info sessions and boat fixing challenges. You did talk about the equipment one time but could you tell us again about the gear, brands, fundamentals and which editing software you have used over time please? Keep up the good work!
Bobby and Lauren, Thank you for the latest podcast entitled ‘The Business of Vlogging’. In addition, thank you for the inspiration to sail, telling your story and the videos. I am writing, as I have a comment about your success as a vlogger. Over the past six months, I have watched, from end to end, Sailing Doodles, Sailing La Vagabond, Sailing Uma and Sailing Nahoa. I have recently started Sailing Ruby Rose and Sailing Soulanis. I have also watched Sailing Delos (but not end to end). I feel part of yours and others success as vloggers is each has a unique story. A story people can relate to, is real/believable and inspirational. In addition, each vlogger is producing quality videos with a back story of individuals who are likeable and have great chemistry together. But it’s the ‘back story’ that I feel is the common thread across successful sailing vloggers. For you Bobby, it is your story of going from success corporate pilot, conquering your stroke, losing your livelihood and reinventing yourself. For La Vagabond, it is Riley’s story of breaking his neck, choosing to pursue a dream of traveling the world via sailboat (with no experience as a sailor), meeting and persuading Elayna to join him and building their life together. For Sailing Uma, it is their catch phase of ‘Never own a couch’ and how this/their way of thinking around this statement has lead then forward. Each sailing vlogger have their story, and each are pursuing their dreaming to make them their reality. I hope one day to join you and others via my own sailing vessel. I may not become a successful vlogger, but I have put my 5/10-year pln together to start to achieve my dreams of sailing the world. Congratulations on your achievements, safe travels and may the wind always be at your back!!Regards, Russell
Avid sailor out of San Diego on my Catalina 30, would like to meet up next time you're here. Your videos consume my lunch in my cube everyday. Soon to become a Subscriber, keep cruising!
Really informative - thanks. I would love to see a video from the "other one" as either of you go about the routine of shooting, editing, etc. Yep, someone filming the other one filming and going through the process. Be safe and enjoy the adventure!
Great job of explaining the work involved. Obviously you enjoy what you do, but it is a real job and a lot of work. Not many would be willing to work so hard conjsistently. Thansk.
"Without that chemistry it’s just a travel documentary"...That's Robert Soule's quote... I completely agree. I enjoy the banter. When SHE showed up I became a regular watcher...at this point the babe factor is much less important than the fun ...."Without that chemistry it’s just a travel documentary"
I love these "real talks" about sailing or even vlogging in general. What you're telling me is similar to what I'm hearing from other sailing vloggers. The reward is great, but it comes with a cost. Furthermore, RUclips has made it even harder for those just starting a channel too. But I think it may just be worth it. :)
Sailing Doodles This is true, but other social media networks don't pay users for views. So, when RUclips cut monetization for new channels (< 4000 hours watched & < 1000 subs), that kind of hit hard to those not as popular.
Josh Blaha yeah it does hurt but in a different way than you would expect. Often people think that a channel with 500-800 subscribers is earning money... well they are but about $2 a day at most. So demonetizing that channel costs the channel about $50-100 a month at most. So that’s not enough to call it a job that earns money. What really hurts the small channels is that if their videos are not monetized youtube doesn’t feature or promote the videos because of the vids aren’t monetized then youtube isn’t making any money on the vids either. I have noticed that if a video I have gets demonetized for whatever reason, the views drop off to almost nothing.
Sailing Doodles Yeah, I can see that. I think it might inspire or give hope to some to just get the little bit of money though...even if they don't have many views. Although, I think RUclips's reasoning is to cut down on those who create a new channel just to publish a video they know will get a lot of hits (video copies) just to reap the money from the views. I get what you're saying about the views though. I'm sure Patreon still helps you with some of the views even though demonetizing may hurt it.
Hmmm,I believe I know the answer to that question.Ha! For me it's more a question of do you realize, just HOW MUCH, Laura has increased your bottom line?? I dare say she has "almost" totally made up for the subscribers lost. When them Doodles got sent apackin!? Haha! Thus, I do not think it's entirely out of the question. To @ the very least, contemplate changing the name of this channel to ...."SAILING LAURA" ;) Grrrrr.
Thank you both for explaining the facts of a vloggers life. I hope you are able to buy or be given the catamaran you want upon delivering White Squall.
Thanks guys for the info. Its interesting to me how the videos get better over time. Not just yours but everyone doing this. What's crazy to me is the gamers and how many viewers they get playing games. Anyway keep it up and maybe next time your back in Dallas you can do a meet and greet again.
Its great to see how much better place you are in than after Burning Man when you had lost your boat, Your "talent" was deserting you, your RV died, then the truck died, then your air fares got screwed ..... Bad memories... Sorry. Then I remember you saying your ideal would be to be cruising with a partner and along came Laura. the Charter company and I have thoroughly enjoyed how your life has improved and you have both become happier. I am looking forward to the next adventures.
Yeah Bobby, its good to work hard for yourself to make your company better. Its a peace of mind and heart without working under boss. Best of luck bro (Y) :)

You and the Wynns are most professional of all the sailing videos. Thanks for sharing your adventures with us.
Hey guys, great job. I appreciate the candor and transparency as to what's involved in time and costs. Thanks,
Very informative. You guys do just the right combo of fun, tech, work, play and 'paying the bills'. Everything looks genuine, and not obviously staged. Keep up the good work, and enjoy!

Met you guys in montery . And you to are awesome. I'm glad you did this video. For people that don't realize the work verses the pay. Enjoy the trip.

Hi Bobby and Laura, I love what you have done, so energetic and so much fun. Keep doing it love life as you do. I will keep track of you and hope you keep sailing. I have started watching flying doodles as well and that's great.
Thank you so much! We will be back sailing in 3 weeks.
Thankyou for sharing the financial end of your business. Most people don't discuss the most important part which is the financial part.
Excellent podcast. I was never sure of the nuts and bolts of the production of a 10 minute video. Keep up the great work

Thanks for sharing the info, was wondering how you and others worked it, and thanks for taking us along for the ride
Congratulations on 80,000 subscribers. Awesome! You'll pass Tula's Endless Summer in the next week or so and be the 5th largest sailing channel. Awesome!!
Booby and Laura has a great chemistry and your interactions in front of the camera are both authentic and funny!
Great insight on the slog of vlogging! Keep up the videos and wishing you fair weather and calm seas!!
Enjoyed the video podcast guys. Always nice to see a new notification from Sailing Doodles!
Glen Brown
Appreciate all that you do. This was very informative. Now I’m going over to Patreon to help support what you do! Love you both.
Thanks so much for this informative video. Prior to watching this video, I had no knowledge whatsoever about the business end of producing and profiting from RUclips videos. I encourage everyone to become a patron as a way of thanking you two for the outstanding videos you post!.
Great insight Bobby... and I appreciate the transparency. Looking forward to the next round of travel and videos!
Awesome explanation and summary of how you've created this wonderful channel.
good to see you guys are enjoying life. and we get to see how much there is out there to enjoy.joe from md.
you forgot to thank Laura a zillion times. She has helped your become a ton better... she is very refreshing and a great addition to your life.
Many thanks was informative, and congratulations on your success and may you keep enjoying making, creating and sailing.
Your Video on what it takes to start your own Video, etc.. Vary educational on how much its cost for the equipment, such as camera and drones and operating cost, Plus your own sail boat, big bucks and it does take time to build your own clientele and also getting sponsors. Great Video, Thank You
Thanks for the insights into podcasting Bobby. Good luck.
Cool to understand how it all works - glad to be a patron and sail vicariously with The Doodles. But you need the puppies back on board ...
Keep up the great work guys, love watching all your videos
Well thanks so much and thanks for watching!
We had no idea how ad sense worked. Thanks for sharing!
Great VLOG! I happened upon your channel by chance a couple months ago and now wait for every video. Your early VLOGs were good, but the addition of Laura has provided that little extra something tomato it great. Contrary to some others I think your balance between sailing and island tours is good. Please keep it up.
I have been watching for some time now and I have to say that your editing skills are superb Bobby. Great content.
I really enjoy these podcasts a lot. Thank you.
⛵️ Great video you guys! I think you did a fantastic job explaining and at NO time did you come across as complaining. Thx ⛵️
Very nice review. I’ve watched you from the beginning and you guys are awesome!
Great Vid, love the how-tos and behind the scenes vids, oh and the sailing hahaha!
You Both Work and Play Great Together ,, Very informative , Definitely One of the Best Jobs Traveling By Sailboat Around The World is a Total Win ! keep Going Guys !
Love you guys! Living my dream. Be careful out there!
I’ve hade a dislike pop up within 10 seconds of posting a video.... so there is no way they watched it
Great info, thanks for taking time to explain it all. BTW, we miss the dogs, hope they'll be back when you get closer to the US again.
Thank you! It’s a learning process!
Don't forget to Like the video, people. It really makes a difference.
Nice video, I am beginning to understand how it works for you guys.
Bobby and Lauren,
Thank you for the latest podcast entitled ‘The Business of Vlogging’. In addition, thank you for the
inspiration to sail, telling your story and the videos.
Of wow thank you so much! Glad you are enjoying the videos. I hope you get out there and cruise some day!
Avid sailor out of San Diego on my Catalina 30, would like to meet up next time you're here. Your videos consume my lunch in my cube everyday. Soon to become a Subscriber, keep cruising!
Now I understand all the work... Thx guys...
Wayne Federico is
Even if Laura was the only reward, it would be worth it.
Thank you for the transparency!
Good explanation Bobby...nice visuals too🙂 I mean ur assistant
Thanks for doing what you do.
Yeah RUclips has made it harder to get noticed but that’s probably like every social media platform.
Awesome video!!! I'm working toward the same goal, land based for now...... Expanding horizons in the future. Keep working toward the 1% goal.
Bobby do you think Laura has in creased you bottom line dollar as well, I mean she has increased my desire to watch the channel.
You two are so good together, on camera at least.
Thank you both for explaining the facts of a vloggers life. I hope you are able to buy or be given the catamaran you want upon delivering White Squall.
thanks for the honesty
Thanks guys for the info. Its interesting to me how the videos get better over time. Not just yours but everyone doing this. What's crazy to me is the gamers and how many viewers they get playing games. Anyway keep it up and maybe next time your back in Dallas you can do a meet and greet again.
Practice makes perfect. Unlike a lot of other genres.... pretty much no sailing vlogs had a background in film so we are all learning to be better
viewing and listening to this now via headphones & home internet desk top.
Great show. Interesting.
Definitely worth listening.....too!
Great info. Thanks for sharing your experiences.
