Side note about Schrader's crash. Johnny Benson knew that crash took him out of the 500 but instead of sitting in his car dwelling on that, he goes over and checks on Kenny. Something a lot of guys these days wouldn't do. That's one of the things I miss most about 90's NASCAR, no matter how hard they raced each other there was always respect
Dee Jay Ferguson They didn't have time to hate on each other because they all understood that they were putting their lives on the line. Back then it was very much a daredevil sport
Always respect! Like when Tony Stewart punched Kenny Irwin in the face, and when Rusty threw that bottle at Dales head. Drivers were just so different in the 90's!
I absolutely agree with u I posted my comment before I read yours so I apologize but when I saw that wreck I was thinking the same thing you were. I watched this in 98 and the 2001 Daytona 500 and that wreck just dawned on me all these years later especially the Irony of Ken Schrader 3 years apart
Robert Shinn they did that stuff because of the fact that it was life or death out on the track too. Now drama is manufactured and is really just hate for no reason. Joey Logano drives like an asshole, but he’s not endangering anyone’s life. Throwing a bottle at him wouldn’t really be justified. Also a season long points championship is much more stressful for those involved in the fight than a crapshoot, because in a crapshoot the onus isn’t really on you as much
Some of these drivers are also volunteer firefighters back home too, I think. For example, I believe Geoff Bodine was a volunteer firefighter in Chemung where he was from.
There are 2 reasons that Schrader lived and not Dale. 1. His belts stayed intact. 2. The cars crushed more here than in 2001. NASCAR was so focused on protecting drivers in rollovers that the cars became too stiff and didn't give. Look at the amount Schrader's car gave compared to Dale in '01 and you'll see what I mean.
Not disputing your reasoning AT ALL. Another big contribution to how Earnhardt died was that he turned his head to the right before impact. this is what caused the whipping motion that broke his neck.
Also, Earnhardt used an open-faced helmet while Schrader wore a closed-face one. The lack of face protection allowed Earnhardt's chin to strike the steering wheel, which caused the skull fracture.
Earnhardt loosened his belts during the red flag stop after the Tony Stewart wreck and never tightened them back up!! Earnhardt's belt did not break!! That is why Earnhardt did not survive his 2001 Daytona wreck.
I miss the twin 125’s during the week. Some years my dad would sign me out from school early so I could watch. My computer class teacher liked nascar so he would let us watch it during his class. I miss sneaking and trying to watch the twins in the middle of the day. Brings back good memories
At the time Earnhardt's 11th qualifying race win, and 9th in a row at the time. Swept the 1990's winning his qualifying race from 1990-1999. He won his qualifying race 12 times (1983,1986,1990-1999).
43:19 Scary as hell and a sad Irony Ken Schrader just hit that wall with the same velocity and speed as Dale Earnhardt when he lost his life although Kenny Shrader walked away he was injured from the sudden stop head on impact in the wall. 3 years later he's there with Dale the rolls reversed and its inappropriate to mention details as I respect both these guys but Ken Shrader also hit the steering wheel bending it which hurt him but he survived which is the sad irony of Daytona. Ken Schrader is a very lucky man and he's a really good guy too and u know 2001 haunts him too this day God Bless
He never got hit in the side also like Dale did. I believe the doctors said the side impact may have contributed to Dale dying also since it changed the angle of impact.
It Baffles me that Schrader survived that vicious wreck virtually unscathed yet Sr. died from his 3 years later and it wasn't even as hard...hard to comprehend.
Shouldn't believe everything you hear, but I have heard that Earnhardt wore his belts differently, maybe not the way Simpson designed them to be worn. I always noticed that he sat very low in the car too.
I miss Ken Spuire. Every race fan who watches all 3 NASCAR series on tv and all the pre and post race shows on Speed tv should thank God for Ken Squire. Ken was the one who convinced CBS Sports to broadcast the Daytona 500 live flag to flag which led to getting all cup and later all Busch/Nationwide races on tv. In the late 70's and early 80's I used to drive 40 miles one way just to listen to cup races on radio. BTW I live in the Louisville area and we could not get them here.
45:18 looking at it reminded me of Earnhardt's fatal crash the way he got clipped but he survived and ironically he was involved in that crash three years later, Schrader did.
probably wont see this response but earnhardts belt broke 95 percent of that death was that the other 5 was mentionioned in an earlier comment about how stiff the car was
They stiffened the cars up to protect them from rolling since the. Which didn’t give at all but the reason it killed Sr. Also with ken he didn’t have another car pushing him into the wall and didn’t completely stick to the wall like sr.
Rick Sanchez's Flask the duels are 150 miles the twins were 125, you’ll sometimes hear them called by their generic name, the duel 150s (shouldn’t it really be “dual”?)
I was in Chicago and was so livid they showed college basketball instead of Napa 300. I didn't get to watch that race in full till years later.
Same buddy same.

TheAirplaneMaster truth
True. Seatbelt was the big factor.

Schrader was able to run the 500 three days after this, starting 31st and pushing himself to a fourth place finish, with a fractured sternum no less

whos here after Dale Jr download with Larry Mac
Me
I thought dale jr started in 98, Wheres he at
My dad took me to this race when I was a kid. Thank for the memories!
what do you saw?
i love this races from the 90´´s. i hope you can post more. thanks a lot!!!
Earnhardt won ever one of his Gartorade 125 races in the 90's a record that will probably never be matched.
Definitely. It’s cool that that streak perfectly lined up with the decade. What domination.
He also won 6 Busch clashes, 7 Busch Series 300 mile races, 3 points paying Winston Cup races, 12 Duel races, and 6 IROC races.
Dale called his win on sunday
It Baffles me that Schrader survived that vicious wreck virtually unscathed yet Sr. died from his 3 years later and it wasn't even as hard...hard to comprehend.

Kenny Schrader hit that wall very hard, eerily like Earnhardt's crash a couple years later.
43:12. Ken Schrader's crash.
10am EST.. Love it!
February 12, 1998.
UGH THANKS CHICAGO, NOW I CANT WATCH THE BUSCH SERIES RACE!! :(
Part 2. Ken Squre should be in the NASCAR HOF.
And he did win it
Am I the only one that thinks it looks like Dale Earnhardt and neil bonnets fatal crashes the way Ken hit the wall
Wow. So Larry's on DJD and now all of a sudden this video has ads... man big tech is desperate
Funny. Like in the Daytona 500. Earnhardt winning by the race to the caution...
I miss Ned Jarrett's personality
43:14
Bring NASCAR back to CBS
They can't due to the NFL..!!!
They stiffened the cars up to protect them from rolling since the. Which didn’t give at all but the reason it killed Sr. Also with ken he didn’t have another car pushing him into the wall and didn’t completely stick to the wall like sr.
he didnt have a car puahing him into the wall
Man that wreck with Schrader look scarrily like Dale Earnhardt's fatal wreck
And don't forget the Trucks.
schrader hit harder than earnhardt...he drove the sunday 500 with a broke sternum, they showed his steering wheel in the 500 broadcast...very bent!
Shanco4688 nah I still think dales hit was harder Schrader hit the apron way harder and slowed down a bit more. still a vicious hit
Am I the only that's disgusted that these qualifying races are now known as the 'budweiser duels' (note the [intentional] lack of capitalization)?
Only duels I'm aware of are with pistols. Always refer to these as the 125s.
Rick Sanchez's Flask the duels are 150 miles the twins were 125, you’ll sometimes hear them called by their generic name, the duel 150s (shouldn’t it really be “dual”?)
why did they change the name from Winston cup to sprint cup
Legal issues with R. J. Reynolds. It became Nextel Cup in 2004 and when Sprint bought Nextel it became the Sprint Cup.
Professional sports in the U.S. could no longer be sponsored by tobacco companies because it makes kids want to smoke.
Cigarette advertising became more restrictive
