    Fame is actually a great movie, regardless if you’re into the performing arts or not. The screenplay was Oscar nominated, (and of course the music had a clean sweep at the Oscars - Irene Cara beating her other nominated song from the movie). You won’t be disappointed. And as I always say, it is an essential watch for anyone remotely interested in the 80s. It permeated everything for at least the first half of the 80s.

  • @christophercombs3501
    @christophercombs3501 Год назад +35

    Yes, that is Irene Cara both singing the song and starring in the movie. The movie "Fame" is what made her a star. As far as your assessment of the style of the song "Fame", yes it has disco vibes. Fame was filmed in the late 70s and was released in 1980. During this period pop music was still desperately hanging onto the disco sound but was rapidly being over taken by the electronic dance music, new wave and modern/glam rock that would dominate the 80s.
    As a side note look at the cast of the movie that is highlighted in this music video...but yet we are expected to believe that "diversity" in film only happened in "current year".

    Fame was also a tv show that stared Debbie Allen once again as the dance teacher, back in the eighties. They tried to bring the show back in the 2000's with new students, but it didn't last. Debbie acted, danced, and sang on the show, and eventually directed. The original tv show was so beloved, that it brought world tours of the fame cast performing numbers from the tv show. Some of those concerts can be found on RUclips, as well as their reunions.

    After writing a book on Irene Cara's life I discovered some important trivia information about Fame. "Remember, remember, remember" was an idea that Luther Vandross came up with as they were creating the title song. It was Irene who knew all the "badass" singers since she had worked with them all. She brought in Luther and of course he knew even more singers as well. Irene's "fame" would have never happened had she not made so many friends in the music industry and brought them in to help make such powerful music. If you are not aware of songs like "We are the World" or "Do They Know it's Christmas?" then you should start your journey listening to music that was made to heal the world. And we are definitely in need of some music that can do that these days...

    That is her! She has these short bangs in the movie. She was very young in these 2 early 1980s movies! Just barely out of her teens then. You'll love these movies, both preaching the lie that if you work hard enough, you can achieve anything you want. Though Fame does explore many of the pitfalls for aspiring teen, too. And their naivite, as you mention. Flashdance is more of a fairy tale presented as an extended music video, like the then new MTV and TV's Miami Vice were also: plot, character development, and dialog totally subordinated to flashy dance, glamor, coolness among the beautiful and talented.

    Yes, Irene Cara played Coco Hernandez in the movie. Debbie Allen originally had a bigger part in the movie, but most of it got cut out. I heard Debbie played a senior who was helping out the dance teachers with auditioning new freshmen applying to the school. The movie inspired a TV series and in that, Debbie got to play dance teacher Lydia Grant.
    Disco was mostly over when Fame came out, but I've seen the song included in at least one collection of disco hits, so I guess some might call it disco. Personally, I think disco songs have louder and more dominating drum beats than Fame does, but I'm no music expert. Fame came out around 1979, so it was on the cusp of the 80s.

    RIP to the amazing Irene Cara. She will live on forever in her incredible music. Fame was also a tv series in the 80's. One of my top favourite songs was Starmaker. So heartfelt and compassionate - dedicated to their music teacher that passed. But SO many incredible songs from the show. I have a cassette tape of their 84 live concert - and have almost worn it out.

    If you want to go down a Fame rabbit hole and want to see NYC from that era, the video Body Language has Debbie Allen and a flash mob alongside her in Times Square and other locations.

    Yes, irene Cara is absolutely in the movie and is the singer! And Debbie Allen was fantastic in Fame - both the movie and the show. Leroy was my fave character, though! And Bruno.

    Yeah, this was an 80s thing and speaking from experience as a graduate of satellite for junior high school performing arts in Rockland one of the requirements when you graduated was that you had to try out for the high school of performing arts in Manhattan not just in your major, but also in your something major as well and it is not easy getting into the high school of performing arts. Whether you be a dance major vocal message. drama, major, or even a music major. You have to go for multiple additions before you can get into the school if they accept you

    It is surprising that a dance teacher would not be familiar with "Fame". Debbie Allen was a great dancer and choreographer. So was Gower Champion, Gene Kelly, Hermes Pan, Bambi Linn, Bob Fosse, Fred Astaire - all of whom had success on stage and in films. Fortunately, their fantastic accomplishments are preserved in many classic musical movies from the 40s, 50s and 60s.

    I used to love the TV show "Fame" based on the movie. Some of the actors from the movie, including Debbie Allen, reprised their roles for the TV show. She had the famous line, "here's where you start paying...in sweat." ruclips.net/video/QV9ajjn46dY/видео.html

    The scene you stoped on was Irene singing Out Here On My Own. I love that song, and I think it’s timeless. It applies today as much as it did then, and the piano isn’t “stale” or dated as 80s music.
