Physics & Philosophy with Sean Carroll & Neil deGrasse Tyson

  • Why is the past different from the future? Neil deGrasse Tyson and comedian Chuck Nice explore the universe’s deepest questions like why is there anything, how we know we are in the real present, if there could be a unified theory of physics and more with theoretical physicist Sean Carroll.
For more information about the new book: startalkmedia.com/books/
Why mix philosophy and science? We break down the history of philosophy, “natural philosophy,” and their connection to science. We dive into why it's important for scientists to ask these big philosophical questions. Learn what quantum entanglement is, its importance, and “the many worlds hypothesis.”
What if the Big Bang wasn’t the beginning and the universe was infinitely old? We explore entropy and the possibility of an infinite universe. Does a finely tuned universe imply the existence of a god? We discuss scientific arguments for the existence of God and whether a god would be beholden to the laws of physics.
Why is there something rather than nothing? Neil and Sean debate the inherent properties of space and the definition of nothing. What does the present even mean if everything we do to interact with the world has a time delay? And finally, are we still chasing a unified theory of physics?

    • @thelyrebird1310

We could indeed "exist" in the real present, depending upon what you define as exist.
Seriously, chuck needs to be given an official doctorate in philosophy. His summation on the time and entropy observations was brilliant, you could see look on his face change as the concept snapped into place. Loved Neil and Sean's reaction as well as chuck went deeper and they knew he got it.😊

If some neo nazis coming after me, I‘d better assume this is the real present in order to have a chance to save my live.
Maybe the fundamental fabric of space time is like a video tape on which our reality is like a movie recorded on it.
We the protagonists of our movie have to follow the script and go by its rules. This is the fourth wall, we cannot break.

I like the eternalist view really. I think there are many worlds and just as many possible pasts as possible futures. I do think that the present is where you are, at least consciously. However I think the present is very relative considering we already know our perceptions are delayed and not even immediately directly connected to our senses.

Chuck is terrible at being a layman translator. He misunderstands the point constantly, runs WAY too far with his comments, to the point where Sean could only say "yes, it's sort of like that", because correcting him would take half of the episode. He's interrupting the guest before they made their point, overall disaster of a host.

The ‘manifestation’ of the state is not that strange as it seems. What does ‘measure’ mean? There’s no way to ‘measure’ what a quantum particle does without influencing it. If you hit it with a photon to see it, you’re manipulating it. If you use an electron, it’s the same. etc. There’s no way of ‘looking at it’ without influencing it.

The speed of the space movement into NOTHINGs results in the creation of new NOTHINGs and manifests itself as the Fundamental Particle and the Unifying Theory of CREATION of EVERYTHING.

On psychedelics I have noticed the brain will sometimes throw in a image of flock of birds flying by (that aren't actually flying by) as like a function of normallacy, as if to say "just a regular day blue sky birds flying." But then the birds disappear into thin air, and you realize there were no birds, the brain just added it as background noise to make you feel safe/comfortable or as if all is normal.... I wonder how many times our brains do this sober (if ever)? There could be a number of situations where your brain adds small details that aren't actually there, just as way to fill in the gaps and make you feel more comfortable.

It may be why we cannot explain gravity, dark matter, and dark energy, nor have a complete understanding of magnetism. I love NDT, Chuck, and startalk, but it feels a lot of times guests have to be patient. Lot of interruptions and levity in the middle of a technical explanation on something the guest is passionate about. I know, I know, it’s kind of part of the show, and again I do love the channel, sometimes it’s just a bit much.

I love Neil being able to allow theology to be an argument without completely dismissing the idea. He asks questions rather than gives his opinion on rebuttals. This is how you learn from others, whether you agree with everything they say or not. I also think in his heart, he knows that there is some form of intelligent design and is able to appreciate that being the logical mind he is.

Guys you have the best communicator of science in human history on your show and barely let him speak. I appreciate the casualness of the show and the jokes, but i feel when Sean speaks we must shut up and listen. People like him dont come around often.
PS: When Sean asked "is empty space 3 dimensional?" as a counter-argument.. i lost it, thats why i love him so much. thats like a question you can think about for the rest of your life.
PS2: I knew about what Sean is talking about with the basketball example and the syncing but its such a great example. i had a neuroscientist friend during Uni whom with we talked about conciousness and advancements in the attempt to understand it, attempts to map out the entire human brain etc and ofc that leads you to free will and whether its an illusion or not and after listening to sam harris on the topic as well my personal understanding of the situation and the topic is that free will "exists" at a macro level as in its intuitive to think about it that way in terms of our every day experience BUT (sort of like the dichotomy between classical and quantum mechanics) at a fundamental level its an illusion because our brains are just an evolved supercomputer responding to stimuli and producing an experience that is affected by our upbringing, genetics, epigenetics, traumas and chemistry of our current experience at any given time. and this is what i mean. I m convinced Sean could teach a 5 year old quantum mechanics and special relativity at this point.. and once you deal with that then you have to confront consciousness. there s tononi and the Phi theory and other observations we can make as to what that first "person" experience is and whether it exists in every species or not but unlike free will we know for a fact it exists. however, its a byproduct of the evolution of organisms and particularly the human brain as far as i can tell. maybe that picture could likely change with advancements in AI down the line but who knows. thats where i sit right now on this and its fascinating to think about.
thank you for everything that you do. i hope i didnt come off as condesending its just, for us lay people, people like sean or brian greene are pure gold, and we cant get enough of them BUT THATS WHY WE HAVE THE MINDSCAPE PODCAST :D

There is an indefinable mysterious power that pervades everything, I feel it though I do not see it. It is this unseen power which makes itself felt and yet defies all proof, because it is so unlike all that I perceive through my senses. It transcends the senses. But it is possible to reason out the existence of God to a limited extent. Even in ordinary affairs we know that people do not know who rules or why and how He rules and yet they know that there is a power that certainly rules.
In my tour last year in Mysore I met many poor villagers and I found upon inquiry that they did not know who ruled Mysore. They simply said some God ruled it. If the knowledge of these poor people was so limited about their ruler I who am infinitely lesser in respect to God than they to their ruler need not be surprised if I do not realize the presence of God - the King of Kings
