The Edge of Our Understanding with Brian Greene & Neil deGrasse Tyson

- Опубликовано: 6 июн 2024
- Are humans smart enough to uncover the secrets of the universe? Neil deGrasse Tyson and comedian Chuck Nice explore the singularity, string theory, free will and more with theoretical physicist Brian Greene.
Does quantum mechanics prevent an infinitely small singularity in a black hole if nothing can be smaller than a Planck length? Explore with us the mathematical breakdown at the singularity and what we know about what goes on there. Can relativity and quantum mechanics ever truly meet?
We discuss if anything in our universe truly has free will. What is free will to a photon that does not perceive time? We discuss the role of aesthetics in theoretical physics, whether string theory is right, and why it's taking so long to uncover the entire universe.
How is E = mc^2 actually used? We break down the mass-energy equivalence and how it is demonstrated in everyday life. What would a scaled-up atom look like? Is there a geometric center of the universe? Will we ever reach a point where quantum physics can no longer be proven experimentally? All that, plus, we explore what the next major breakthrough might be and whether it will shatter our understanding of the universe as we know it.

I need help with my new years resolution. I've figured out how to change the stars.
My idea for changing the stars includes Orion and Pleiades (Subaru). I figure it's time to put something up there that's relevant to us, don't you think? Take Orion's belt and Betelgeuse becomes the head with a baseball hat. Below the belt are two legs bending at the knee. The feet aligning perfectly under the bent knees. The 3 stars of Orion's belt align perfectly as the 3 fat belt loops on a baseball uniform. The spear pointing at "Subaru" is the bat being swung and "Pleiades" is the baseball flying away after being hit. Put it all together and you get, "THE ALL-STAR." In my case, I see a left-handed batter and I imagine a "7" on the jersey. Which makes him, "Mickey." (As it should be ;-) But you can put any number you want, making, "THE ALL-STAR," any player you want. It'd be wrong of me to not, at least, try. This is me, trying. Pass it on, please and thank you. Don't worry, where I come from, crazy is a compliment. ;-P
The other thing I need your help with is bigger than Patreon. It's what I used to include with changing the stars.
I do not have a answer for u. I have a question about time. If god is above time so that means that everything that he will ever do is happening to him all the time so if he is everywhere all the time so how are we here ? And also iif Infiniti happened before us so we never are created ?
My understanding of lucid dreaming is that you can partially impose your will/actions in the dream vs a dream where you have no control.
I love it when Brian Greene is on the show. The chemistry between all three of them is great. I vote for more Brian Greene.
Are you sure it's the chemistry, and not much deeper, like on the level of quantum physics? Brian Greene sure is an excellent collection of atoms!😜

Yes! Neil and Brian have such great chemistry. With knowledge and personality alike.
I was about to make the same suggestion about the world science festival. Hes practically the king of it. It's my favorite festival.

Isn't it time for Chuck's graduation as an amateur astrophysicist soon?
I'd love to see an episode where Neil and the producers select the questions, and put together a special "Things you ought to know by now"-episode where Neil reads the questions, Chuck replies, and then Neil elaborates.
Chuck, we believe in you! 👏
Neil, I am so glad you gave Chuck a celebratory educational certificate!! 😊.. I love your show and it has been very noticeable how much Chuck has learned over the years!! I can tell by the great questions that he ask. Keep up the great work both of you!! I Learn and Laugh every time I watch an episode!! Knowledge and laughter is a great combination.
I love Brian Greene always. He’s such a fascinating and compelling communicator when it comes to the weirder and more complicated edges of science.
Doesn't hurt that he is one of the most advanced and accomplished technical minds in our species history.
So long as he doesn't talk politics

He puts a lot of energy into explaining tough subjects that are very abstract to the uneducated, little like a teacher trying to be pedagogic using a whiteboard, etc.
I must say that Chuck learning alot and actually retaining it has been fun to watch over the many videos.. he's coming out with the right answers too so we know he's paying really good attention with the explainers with done Neil . It's fitting that he actually was given a diploma of sorts from Neil for how much he's actually learning and showing it too lol
Chuck nice he's actually a very good at scientific research. then i do 😁
What are you trying to say about Chuck? Chuck or Sir Chuck Nice is the man and has master plan....
It’s been great to see Chuck learn! He brings such a relatable, light hearted touch to the show and seeing him be able to contribute more and more to the conversations with some top level intellects sets a great example that to the viewer that if you apply yourself, you can increase your understanding of complex topics. Shout out to the whole team on this show!
Brian Greene is one of the best teachers and my favorite astrophysicist!
Man I just love Brian Greene's ability to explain such complex ideas and concepts. Truly incredible times we live in to be able to witness such insights from a fellow human being.
Interesting comment. I heard NDT read similar statements from books he owns that were written before Einstein revealed the theory of relativity.

It's really going beyond the Planck measure=beyond spaceTime mathematics and that's the point where he said laws of mathematics break down=because There's no longer space=no-measurement possible=nothing to measure except incomprehensible temperature of trillion of trillions degrees that explodes into new spaceTime Expansion of Light BEING source of Universe and everything in it upon lowering frequency=energy=temperature✓
I'm a huge fan of Brian Greene's books. "Until the End of Time" was an amazing journey of learning for me. Love the idea of using the empire state as a graphic reference of eons passing. For the past 5 years, I've been exploring the hobby of learning about relativity and how the universe actually works, and I've read all of Brian Greene's books and also many other authors. Thanks for having him on start talk again.

@@Infernalucky So I guess we should just give up on physics and say “god” did it? Not very scientific or even remotely logical
The way you bring intelligence and inspire us all to see the intelligence in us all is so inspiring. From the bottom of my heart, thank you all!
i cannot imagine great teachers that are more interested and caring about their science as you two wise human beings, and all of your guests that I have heard in your discussions. Thank you sincerely for all you do to educate people in your lives as teachers. Kudos
Brian greene is an absolute treasure to our generation gifted by the universe
I like to see the people and discussions at the edge between the known and the unknown ... Neil is great when he talks about the universe, philosophy, astrophysics and science ...
On the lucid dreaming topic: I once had a lucid dream in which I realized I was dreaming, and the dream was kind of creeping me out, so I wanted to wake myself up. When I woke up, it turned out that I didn't really wake up at all - I dreamt that I woke up, but was still actually asleep. That also broke the lucid dreaming effect, since I thought I was awake. I was super convinced that I was awake, too, until a few minutes later when I woke up for real.
....Or did I???
🤨🤔
yeah. that happened to me like 10 times . 😂
Same here, seems like it's not so atypical
has happened to me a few times, and the 'awake' part of my dreaming was so good, waking up for real was disappointing!
Brian fits perfectly here. Humor sparks, the talk is fluent and relaxed. Interesting topics. Real pleasure.

Brian Greene plus Neil plus Chuck equals curiosity at it's finest
I love this show so much. I share it with all my friends who like science and/or Dr. Tyson
Thanks for translating universe's language to a simple man like me, I really appreciate your show !!!
Always love listening to Brian Greene. He always speaks so elegantly and eloquently.
This is the first time I’ve heard someone share my exact thoughts on free will. I’ve explained this several times to many people, so this is pretty awesome! Thanks!
Same, it's nice to have the validation from someone so vastly more intelligent than me. Haha
I dont get it. Do you mean how Greene said that we dont have free will and everything is preordained by the laws of physics?
So why arent the laws of physics completely capable of answering all our scientific questions? Wheres the "more powerful" laws of physics they talk about that combines quantum physics and einsteins relativity? And would that change their answers? Because if we have a law of physics thats not complete then how can we know if our every moment is predestined? And why dont our laws of physics work sometimes?
Also in the many worlds theory, and multiverse theories its possible that we live out every choice and combination of choices that we can possibly make so is that really predestined or just another universe?
Pretty sure this is the predominant view amongst any physicists if you asked me
Love these guys. Always waiting for Brian or Niel to come out with the next video
It’s sitting right here!
Love ya Chuck.
Another informative and mentally stimulating episode.
Thank you Neil, Brian and Mr Comedy.
I've always loved people like Neil and Brian. The way they can explain complicated science in a simple way that the common person can understand is amazing. Most scientists ether can't or don't want to take the time to do it, or just look down on us unknowledgeable folks who genuinely want to understand what's going on in the universe and how it works.
Great watch as always. Dr. Greene is always a great guest to have.
Brian Greene should be a regular on the show I think. This is great!

21 minutes approx. String theory and language. Music is a language too . I am a string player therefore I am a string theorist right? Another theoretical form of organizing sound waves . I love this. Just proves how much FUN science is!
this was such a thought provoking, eye opening, and funny episode.
That was thoroughly enjoyable from start to finish. More please! I must say I'm impressed y'all were able to even move past question 3 with the calibur of discussion they sparked. Any one of those would have been an all-nighter for me and my armchair scientist buddies 😅
For as long as I have been watching and listening to all of these shows, I have to say this may very well be the best set of questions to happen together ever... Easily could make an entire two hour video on each one without it getting boring 😻
@@DaellusKnights yeah some really great guests on lately. I'm gonna have to join the patreon to start asking my burning questions

Brian is awesome. More on string theory, please!
I usually watch these videos to help me sleep. But I stayed awake for this whole segment (minus damn ads). Now I am going to wake up late for work. Thanks guys! Great work.
I’m currently 67 years old and I’ve been a lucid dreamer since early childhood. Recently, I’ve gained a new level of control over my ability to fly while in this dream state. For years, I would always wake myself up because I feared accidentally hitting the power lines. This was frustrating. Now, I’ve overcome this fear. I can jump from very high places and fly from there, whereas in the past, I didn’t have that level of confidence. I also was able to help someone (in the dream) learn to fly, simply by suggestion; instead of ‘teaching’ them to fly, I only needed to suggest they try it themselves. It’s an interesting time for me in my dreams, that’s for sure. -Love you guys. My favorite podcast!!
Chuck learning a lot of physics makes me so happy.
Loved this episode!
Come in for physics , end up learning and laughter to tears 😂 the best of the best , thank you !
I learn so much from the 3 of you whenever you do an episode!! So blessed to be able to hear these! TY for being willing to share your knowledge w/us!!
One of the best ever episodes. Everyone is great in this.
My biggest reaction was to learning that many scientists think they are smarter than Einstein. That was a real jaw-dropper
Chuck Nice for president of the United States of America
I'm glad a scientist / mathematician finally said that infinity doesn't apply to reality.
Why doesn’t it?
@@gnomishviking3013 Did you watch the episode? Infinity is a limit of mathematics, not a solution.
Like the RUclips video saying infinite $20 = infinite $1. Show me infinite $20 and I'll show you it is finite. Even the universe has a finite number of molecules to print money on.
Infinity is a crutch until better math and better theories solve it.
@@gnomishviking3013
It’s theoretical. Not demonstrable.
Seems like it is. And why would it make you happy if it didnt? I dont get it.
His string theory does not apply to reality. And that is far worse, because they burnt so much money with that nonsense...
That’s what chuck looks like!! Omg! I never quite thought about it when I listened to the podcast. It’s been a year of listening and this is the first time I’ve seen a video. It’s great to put a face to the voice!!!!!
Neil, Brian, and Chuck..... I'm a fan of your work Chuck, can't wait until you have the experience of your peers. This has been a chord which refurbishes the resonance.
Chuck is incredible!
Great conversation, thanks!
I just had a thought about the center of the universe question: because time is integral to space-time, whenever we look across distances in space we are observing objects at various ages, so all of the objects occupy a different space time. In other words, we have no ability to see the present, except for things in our immediate vicinity. Even then, the speed of light means very close things we observe are not truly in the present, which means that none of what we observe is what’s happening in the present.
Even our own thoughts take time to happen. So the concept of an "absolute NOW" can get a bit mindbending if you take it far enough 😳😅
I love Brian Green. This stuff fascinates me but it can be overwhelming. I love the way they spoon-feed it so I can grasp the concept.
I'm a Finance graduate, but I love these discussions. I wish everybody gets such brilliant teachers
Brian Greene is one of the best! 🤩
Not only did I have lucid dreams as a kid (before I even heard of it) I could jump back into my favorite or even scariest dreams at most times.
My favorite was me being a deer running through waste high grass at the edge of a tree line and would try to keep my leaps as high and long as I could.
My scariest dream was me slowly running through a cornfield with spinach in my eyes that both slowed me down and made it hard for me to see.
(like wearing a jack-o-lantern head running on sole sand in minecraft [as an example.])
That is fascinating, Corvaire. What do you attribute to your abilities to lucid dream? Does it just happen, or do you go through a ritual of sorts? I have remote viewed but never have had a lucid dream.
@@IslandGirlKelly I'm sure a stress mechanism initiated the ability but escape helped hone the skill. It's as simple as picturing the scenario as I fall into sleep (provided I'm sleepy enough.)
I too have lucid dreams where I gain control of my actions and body.. when I was young, I had a nightmare that reoccurred and one night I was able to generate a sword into my hands and the following nights I was able to defend myself in this reoccurring dream that I slow transformed from a nightmare to a triumphant dream.
@VVAdventures So interesting, VV. The closest that I have come to defending myself in a horror type dream happened very recently. I was surrounded by 3 men with guns. One had one pointed right at my head. The second before he could pull the trigger, I was shook awake. A definite shake to my shoulders. I felt it. I live alone. I love unexplained occurances such as that. We don't know, what we don't know. There is so much to this beautiful universe.
Brian Greene it's another level. Thanks to Neil amd Chack for inviting him. More of thisssss
Chuck is Inspiring - I love how much he knows and has learnt
Brian Greene's 'Fabric of the Cosmos' book is what really allowed me to wrap my head around general relativity. Great teacher!
FYI- They originally tried to do this interview in person, but Brian and Neil's brain mass together in one room caused spatial distortions.
🤣
they agreed to do the conversation in the same room experimental evidence for string theory was gathered. But they couldn't find any sadly.
@@daarom3472 sabine hossenfelder would say the same lol
These guys are great, using humour in a very intelligent way and making an otherwise perhaps kind of "dry" topic more vibrant of ideas, thoughts and feelings. I hate listening to dry professors that barely show any emotions at all while "spewing" very complex science that is always vary vague, etc. This is a more fun format for science imo but need the right people ofc. I'm glad I stumbled upon this video, couldnt stop listening! 👌
This is brilliant. Having humour to break up the fantastically difficult and thought provoking "problems" is great.
4:20 Absolutely. That's why I always preferred subjects like physics and mathematics over subjects like philosophy, where you're taught to talk yourself in circles. 😮
Same
Yeah. I have so many pop science books on my bookshelf I haven’t read and have little interest in reading at this stage but I’m always hyped to learn from one of my textbooks. It’s the only kind of book where reading is an activity rather than a passive action. The unfortunate reality is if you don’t actively study physics you’ll never know it, you’ll just think you do.
You need to listen to actual philosophers (Sean Carroll being a great example) instead of sitting with your distaste from the initial serving of philosophy from school!
How many more years before a university awards Chuck an honorary doctorate degree?! Certainly between Dr. Tyson and Dr. Greene, they can pull some STRINGS!!! 😂
I love how NDT adds to the questions to get the best possible answers out of Brian Green. Loved the episode ❤️

Brian’s Greene’s Documentaries fascinated me so much when I was growing up!!!!
I've been watching and following you guys for years and have learned SO much
A singularity is anyplace where our mathematics (or any attempt to explain via physics) breaks down.
This is an interesting concept.
The poets and prophets of old knew that an attempt to use language to name or describe the infinite was a futile effort.
The Daoist states "the Dao that can be told is not the Dao (eternal constant)."
And yet, the poets of old attempted to bend the meaning of words and "speak between the lines" to reach toward the infinite.
This is interesting to me.
The way I understand it: A planck length is the minimal amount where outside forces can influence something. Any less is the equivalence of having nothing at all. I'm not a physicist and so I can be very wrong, but that is the way it was explained to me.
Epic trio, as always - can't get enough.. I carve for more!

I would say that if you emerge from a black hole breaking the laws of physics, then we are insanely lucky to have you bring the information about the black hole, and we will have the exact knowledge, not just a theory. If we word it differently, you emerge from that black hole, and we learn more about the laws of physics than we know now. Appreciate Star Talks. Greetings from Dnipro, Ukraine.
