I think the “why” is a more philosophical question than scientific. If Albert Einstein was working on a unifying theory of “everything,” it means that understanding the “why” sometimes May not be that simple. But I like how Neal expounded on why the question may just be an opening to the rabbit hole. 👍🏿

@fsckool6894 The question implies intent and makes unfounded assumptions anyway. "Why was the universe CREATED?"

Thanks for this very, varied talk about the phenomenal universe we exist in at the moment. When you mentioned the the big rip, I was a bit stunned because few astrophysicists still talk about this subject. This is just my own thought about the subject, even if it happens very quickly, we will see it from far off, literally at the edge of the universe. All of those objects we see that are so far redshifted, that they seem to creep out of the universe from our line of observation, the literal measurement of the expansion of the universe at accelerating rates, would be the first place we see this "big Rip" occurring. Maybe we are already seeing it in a very slow motion, and we experience it over billions of years, watching the universes horizon slightly and slowly shrink.

I have approximate answers and possible beliefs and different degrees of uncertainty about different things, but I am not absolutely sure of anything and there are many things I don't know anything about, such as whether it means anything to ask why we're here. I don't have to know an answer. I don't feel frightened not knowing things, by being lost in a mysterious universe without any purpose, which is the way it really is as far as I can tell.”

An odd thought that is probably not a reflection of the real universe, but here is the question, in the form of an example:
Imagine a bed sheet, and it's resting over a hole.
There is clutter scattered around the top of the sheet.
The bed sheet is being drawn into the hole.
All the stuff on top of the bed can't get in the hole, so it clumps above the entrance.
The sheet grows more stretched as it is pulled further into the hole.
The objects on the sheet that are further from the hole, are spaced further apart.
If in this example we were to assume that space was being acted upon by something in the way that the bed sheet was, would an observer think that objects were becoming more distant due to the space becoming more taunt? Would it explain an inexplicable amount of matter comprising a black-hole, if it was devouring space in that way?

Bjorn asked; "We seem to focus for obvious reasons on the What and the How of the universe. The Why never seems to get much scientific attention, because it assumes i imagine, that their is a purpose which physics does not really need. With that in mind, is not the Why an important factor for human curiosity, and should we not then seek to not necessarily find a reason for the universe but encourage those who seek purpose and thus understanding?"
So the answer with common sense 😅n my mind...is Absolutely Yes. Asking why is an important factor to human curiosity especially beyond a scientific format. We should seek deeper answers to life the universe and everything. And it does not have to be science that has all the answers because it doesnt.
Neil basically answers a different question than what was asked, the question he wanted to answer not the one being put forward.

Wow, I really don't know why Neil assumed that the question "Why does the universe exist" refers to philosophy or religion and assumes the existence of a creator. This is a completely normal question that can be answered scientifically, or at least tried to. Hawking asked the question "why is there something rather than nothing?" He also gave a scientific answer without imposing his beliefs about life on others. This is also what I expected from this channel.

Neil dodged the "Why" question. The question wasn't asking the small why's like why does something fall on the ground or why did was I t-boned. It was asking the Big Why, like why are there so many things beneficial to life on Earth that not only can't be explained by scientists but according to scientific calculations would not exist if conditions was one or two points different. The Big Why is the holy grail of questions, and Neil and every other scientist knows this.

You're thinking of it backwards. We're not here existing in these perfect conditions, we're here BECAUSE of the prefect conditions. When an insect hatches from its egg and it's surrounded by plenty of food to eat in a safe tucked away place, it will thrive and multiply. After a long time its descendants will ask "wow, this little crevasse is so perfect and safe and full of food, it's like someone made it for us, why?". In reality, all the other insects which hatched outside the perfect crevasse and the harsh elements made there be no food and shelter just died, so they're not around to observe and ponder "why?".
It's like in TV shows or books. How is it that ALWAYS JUST the protagonist ends up being the special one, the descendant, the prophecy child, the one to get bit by the radioactive spider. Why? Why is it always that character and not someone else? Because it doesn't matter who they are and there is no why, they are just the lucky ones, and so 100% of the time they will be the ones we'll focus on in the story. Same with us - there ARE billions of other planets, but only ours turned out how it did, and we are the lucky ones to get to be here. We're the main character. We're not special, but SOMEONE WAS GOING TO BE eventually and it happened to be us.

I know I'm late but hear me out. while providing answers and advancing civilization are crucial, the act of asking “why” underpins these processes by ensuring they are thoughtful, informed, and sustainable. It’s the curiosity and critical thinking sparked by “why” that truly drive innovation and meaningful progress. The “why” questions can indeed seem endless, and that’s part of their power. They drive us to continually seek deeper understanding and push the boundaries of our knowledge. While it might seem like an infinite loop, each “why” question brings us closer to a more comprehensive and nuanced understanding of the world around us. It’s this relentless curiosity that drives progress and helps us tackle complex challenges.

Please stop dodging the question. "Why does the universe exist." While technically it should be "how", you know exactly what they are getting at and it's not necessarily intent. There is still an answer there and the only proper response at the moment is quite simply, "We don't know... yet."

Q: Why does the pie fall off the table? A: Because of gravity. Q: Why is there gravity? A: Seems to be property of objects which have mass. Q: How did massive objects acquire this property? A: IDK, something to do with the Big Bang? Does anyone have a hypothesis?

  • @jbgraham4041
    @jbgraham4041 Год назад +1

Why did the pie fall off the table? Because you pushed it causing the pie to fall off the edge. But why did you push it? What was your motive for pushing it, or was it just an accident? Creation from a creator implies intent thus motivation for intent would need the why. Physics does not need motivation to explain the why.
NDT does a good job of taking topics from physics and chemistry, breaking them down for the laypeople out here. If Carl Sagan was still alive, could you imagine having those two on a star talk? Legendary

7:38 to 7:54 is something I've been trying to articulate to well meaning but perpetually unnecessarily inquisitive people my entire life. People who take their preconceived beliefs and assumptions, or they make something up in the middle of that conversation, and then want to debate the merits and considerations of something that isn't a real thing. It matters to them, so they wanna argue on terms like it matters to you too
I'm with Neil and Chuck on this one, it has to stop and we have to move on to other things. Curiosity is the most important personality trait someone can possess, but there is a line where it's no longer curiosity and it becomes something closer to compulsiveness. At that point, I can't help you

  • @bikkies

I have a different interpretation to the opening "why" question, if one is enquiring about the mechanisms that cause a behaviour to happen. We can accurately reach a distant body because we can mathematically model it. The "why" question could be to establish what causes matter to attract gravitationally to other matter. That doesn't feel like a redundant question because we're not disputing that we can do it. We aren't disparaging or devaluing the maths and modelling, but instead we're seeking to understand the underlying reason why the modelling works. We're asking if we not only understand the maths but the reason, which can be equally scientific. If we can express the reason then we've gone beyond a mathematical proof, and have shown we have a deeper understanding.

My favorite answer to “why the universe exists” has to do with Stephen wolfram… his idea of the “ruliad”… philosophically it makes perfect sense… because no matter what if we find the “theory of everything” that explains everything we can see… you could still always ask why are the rules this way instead of another… why this oddly specific inner workings of reality? There will never be a satisfying answer… until… you consider that every possible “computation” or inner working of reality is real and possible… then “why does it exist this way” can be answered by “because every possible way it can be, exists”… “we are observers contained within and made out of a reality that works this way so all we can ever observe is reality this way”… this is the most satisfying answer to me, it could equally be true or not true… but it makes sense that it is because then the uniqueness of our reality is no longer odd because it’s not all that exists…

I think the why he was asking is not “why did the pie fall” but “why do things experience a force pulling toward the center of another object that increases with size of the other object”? To me, that’s a “why” question that is a legitimate inquiry, whose answer would be beneficial.

In my opinion, the "why" is very important. It has equal weight with "what", "where", and "when:. It is the reason why we do science experiments, figure out how things work, and figure out how to repeat and manipulate things. I don't think there is an answer to every "why" question, I don't think all "why" questions are necessary, nor do I think there is an absolute "why" question... but "why" should not be brushed off.

Chuck’s question about an asteroid made me think of a question similar to his… What if a large enough asteroid was a near miss to hitting the Earth by about only a mile? What would happen if a large asteroid say even several miles, or 50 miles 100 miles wide, passed right through the earths atmosphere? Could that rip away a large portion of atmosphere, would it have catastrophic effects or barely any effect at all?
